The Bushido Karate Association of the Shin- tani Wado-kai Karate Federation presents Bunkai Jutsu with Iain Abernethy, 5th Dan Alberta Clinic Circuit June 9-15 2008 The BKA, in conjunction with the Shintani Wado-kai Karate Federa- tion, is very pleased and honoured to of- fer a series of clinics in the Edmonton area with world-renowned Wado Bunkai Jutsu practitioner Sensei Iain Abernethy, 5th-Dan Highlights Sensei Iain Abernethy holds the rank of 5th-Dan with both the British Combat Association (one of the world’s leading groups for close-quar- ter fighting) and with Karate England, the official sanctioning body for traditional karate in England. While his core style is Wado, he has ex- panded his study to embrace other styles of karate and has made it his life’s work to explore the original bunkai principles and messages in the core Wado katas. He is a proponent of kata-based sparring, a mode of training that seeks to apply the concepts taught in the katas in practical self-defense situations, which inevitably involve close-quarter fighting. Sensei Abernethy believes there are four stages to learning kata: 1) learn the moves 2) learn the bunkai 3) understand the principles taught 4) apply the principles in combat, which, in echoes Sensei Ohtsuka’s own philosophy: “It is obvious that these kata must be trained and practised sufficiently, but one must not be ‘stuck’ in them. One must withdraw from the kata to produce forms with no limits or else it becomes useless. It is important to alter the form of the trained kata without hesitation to produce countless other forms of training. Essentially, it is a habit - created over long peri- ods of training. Because it is a habit, it comes to life with no hesitation - by the subconscious mind.” (Hironori Ohtsuka, Wado-Ryu Karate) What others have said “Sensei Iain has an excellent framework for studying the combat applications buried within our Wado katas. You will never see kata the same way again, and you will come to appreci- ate the depth that karate has to offer, and the genius of the kata creators” – James Free- man, 4th Dan, Shintani Wado-kai Karate Federation, Edmonton

Why you should attend

Modern shurite-based styles of karate like Wado kai were heavily influenced by Sensei Anko Itosu and Sensei Gichin Funakoshi as a result of their efforts to introduce karate to the mainland of Japan from its roots in the Ryu Kyu Islands. In many cases, changes were required to the sylla-bus from what was originally taught in order to make it appropriate for use in school systems and for other cultural reasons. However, karate of the 19th century was much more about close-range combat and Te Gumi (grappling hands), including elements of Kansetsu (locking techniques), Uke-mi (falling/tumbling), Tuidi (grabbing), Nage waza (Throws & Takedowns), Shime waza (Chokes and Strangles), and Ne waza (Ground Fighting). The Okinawan practice of Kakedamashi, of which all early karate masters were familiar, is based on Tegumi. The ten main Wado katas are all full of Tegumi when studied from this perspective.

Karate is a holistic martial art that drew on numerous systems and covers many combative tools, ranges and concepts. This is an opportunity to train in all the aspects of karate and explore how our kata contains all the information needed for effective self-protection. Go beyond theory for hands-on practical work with a world-renowned practitioner.

Merchandise

Sensei Abernethy has authored dozens of books and videos outlining his training concepts. Given the topics to be covered in this clinic series, I can recommend the following DVDs for further study:

Bunkai Jutsu Volume 1: The Pinan/Heian Series

This DVD covers all five Pinans with some interesting variations as taught in the Shotokan system. The kata is first discussed for its origins and overall focus, demonstrated in sequences, and then taught with practical bunkai appli-cations in mind.

I recommend this DVD as a starting point for all students who are interested in further study of Sensei Abernethy’s ideas.

Bunkai Jutsu Volume 2: Naihanchin/Tekke, and BassaiBunkai Jutsu Volume 3: KushankuBunkai Jutsu Volume 4: SeishanBunkai Jutsu Volume 5: Chinto

For students interested in organizing their study around principles, the follow-ing titles may be of interest:

Kata-based Sparring - in which Iain looks at how to apply the concepts in Naihanchin into close-quarters sparring

Karate’s Joint Locks - volumes 1-3 - in which Iain looks at Kansetsu against the elbows, shoulders, wrists and legs in a series of exercises drawn directly from Wado katas.
