This year’s “Comedy Night” has been magically transformed into an evening of amazement and wonder by mentalist and magician Ken Salaz!
Better known as “The Master of Astonishment”, Salaz blends expert slight of hand with mindreading abilities to create a unique, jaw-dropping experience for his audience.
His show is infused with comedy and laughter, and audience participation is strongly encouraged. For example, he will ask someone to examine a
$1.00 bill and magically transform it into a $100 bill.
Salaz has performed for both corporate and celebrity audiences, and has had the pleasure of performing in front of such celebrities as Ethan Hawke, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon, Eli Manning, Katie Couric and many more.
“We are excited to have Ken Salaz headline this event,” said Lori Baden, Associate Executive Director. “In addition to doing the show itself, he will also walk around beforehand while guests are mingling to perform close-up magic. It will be a great evening for socializing with friends, meeting new faces, and watching some incredible entertainment.”
Tickets for “A Night of Amazement & Astonishment with Ken Salaz” cost $30 for Temple Sholom members and SMNS parents, and $40 for non-Temple members (tickets include performance, drinks and dessert). To reserve your seat, visit: https://www.templesholom.com/Night-of-Amazement

SATURDAY, JANUARY 26 AT 8:00 PM
Just before the High Holidays, Temple Sholom’s Sisterhood made a generous gift of 40 women’s tallitot to our congregation.
These beautiful handmade prayer shawls were designed by artist Sarah Resnick of Advah Designs. They are each made of silk crepe de chine, a soft and lightweight fabric, and come in an assortment of colors and designs for women to choose from.
“Sisterhood kindly made this donation to Temple Sholom as a way to encourage more women to wear tallitot,” said Eileen Robin, Temple Sholom’s Executive Director. “They
looked at the more traditional ones that we have used and thought a new selection might be more enticing.”
The prayer shawls came with untied tzitzit made from Israeli kosher wool (tzitzit are the four fringes that hang from the corners of the tallit). in September, Phyllis Shapiro, co-president of Sisterhood alongside Randi Weingarten, organized a group of volunteers that included Rabbi Chaya Bender, Cantor Sandy Bernstein and Rabbinic Intern Kevin Peters to finish tying the tzitzit on half of the tallitot.
On Sunday, January 20, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, Sisterhood will gather again to perform the mitzvah of tying the tzitzit on the remaining tallitot. Anyone who would like to participate should contact [email protected] or Audrey Kahn at 203-661-2055.

DECEMBER•JANUARY•FEBRUARY 20192
On Sunday, December 2, we begin our celebration of Chanukah.
This special holiday has significant meaning to each of us as American Jews.
Chanukah is a celebration of how our people historically refused to give into assimilation and those who wished to directly inflict physical or spiritual harm against us.
Against overwhelming odds, the Maccabees managed to win their war against those who wished to destroy us. They managed to regain Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel, and thus were able to rededicate our Great Temple within Jerusalem.
The well-known story of the “miracle of the oil” is most importantly a symbol of our own eternal Jewish dedication to the values we care about, and our Jewish homeland.
Chanukah is the continued embodiment of the Jewish dream of Zionism.
Against all the odds, we chose to pursue the establishment of our Jewish homeland, and we managed to miraculously do so after 2000 years.
Today, we take Chanukah as an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to our Zionism, and the need to support our Israeli brothers and sisters.
As we celebrate Chanukah, I ask that we continue to support the worthwhile tzedakkah opportunities that Temple Sholom participates in.
You may especially wish to consider additional support of the Temple Sholom Amy Lipton z’l Israel Action Fund.
This Chanukah, we also can rededicate our outspoken passionate claims for the justice of Israel’s cause.
We can do this through our concrete acts and the clear message that Diaspora Jews have a stake in the future of Israel now and forever.
If you are interested in any Israel related opportunities, or have any other interests you wish to discuss with me, it would be my pleasure to meet. Please contact me at either 203-869-7191 x103 or [email protected].
If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for my Weekly Teaching emails, please do so by contacting me directly.
I wish you all a Happy Chanukah, and as the secular New Year now approaches, I also pray for us all to have a very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year.

Although our observance of this year’s High Holidays is complete, I want to express my personal thanks to Rabbi Mitch, Rabbi Chaya, Cantor Sandy, Hazzan Sheni Ezra Konigsberg, in addition to Mikhal Weiner, the musicians and soloists, for creating a meaningful and memorable High Holiday experience. A big shout out to all the staff working behind the scenes to make it happen so seamlessly.
I also extend deep gratitude and thanks on behalf of the Board of Trustees to those who have already participated in this year’s Kol Nidre Appeal, as well as to those who support Temple Sholom throughout the year. Your continued generosity is greatly appreciated and helps to pave the way for Temple Sholom’s future.
Speaking of the future, the new full-day Selma Maisel Nursery School program is well underway and currently has a waitlist through 2020. The school is humming along five days a week from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. The infant/toddler and pre-school classrooms are busy, the parents are involved, and the staff and directors are all doing a fantastic job.
It is due to this measured and qualified success that the Temple Sholom Learning Center search committee has recommended
and voted unanimously to promote Nursery School Director David Cohen to the position of Director of Schools at Temple Sholom. Rabbi Mitch, Eileen Robin and I strongly support this, and we look forward to David’s leadership of both of our schools. We are confident he will achieve the highest level of quality education while providing a meaningful Judaic experience for all of our children.
It’s hard to believe that Chanukah is almost here! In Hebrew, the word “Chanukah” means “dedication.” The name reminds us that this holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days. A little light expels a lot of darkness!
This year, may the message of Chanukah illuminate each of our lives and help to make things brighter for all.
Happy Chanukah!
B’Shalom Ben Kriegler, President

NEW ENGLAND COMPETITION & SHOWCASE HIGHLIGHTS BEST IN JEWISH COLLEGIATE A CAPPELLA
More than 400 people attended the first-ever New England Jewish Collegiate A Cappella Competition and Showcase on November 4 at Temple Sholom. Eight teams from the Northeast participated, and each performed a song in Hebrew, a song in English with a Jewish context, and a song of their choice. The event — produced by Gaston Bernstein and chaired by Cantor Sandy Bernstein — also included an opening performance from Temple Sholom’s new Teen Choir. Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were given to “Shir Appeal”, “Alef Beats” and “Manginah”, respectively. Rutgers’ Yitzy Dier was named Best Soloist, and Tufts’ Noah Smith was named Best Beatboxer. Following the presentation of awards, all of the teams gathered together on the bima for a stellar rendition of “Al Hanissim” to close out the show. WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT?Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved.
Yahrzeit Candles are available for a small donation in the main Temple office.
