Greetings To All Troopers, Ladies Auxiliary, Family and Friends

I hope this newsletter finds you well and preparing for a great year of events. These are exciting times as we celebrate the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers. We have people working really hard to ensure the success of these events.

This past weekend, several members of the Executive Board attended the extremely successful fund raising gala at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. It was the first time that the event was held at the museum. That was made possible by the completion of another phase of the restoration. We

had a great time. We also attended a meeting with museum staff to finalize details for our new Headquarters and to discuss reunion activities.

As most of you know, the association’s website has been updated. In addition to a wealth of information, there is everything you need to know about the upcoming reunion. You can even register online at the website! Please help me convey appreciation to Trooper Nina Amos for another job well done.

If a link has not been set up on the website for your chapter, please have your chapter president to contact Trooper Amos.

Plans are being finalized for the Celebrate Freedom event on 06/18/16, the commemorative ride leaving New Orleans 07/23/16, Fort Leavenworth on 07/23/16 and the parade in Houston on 07/28/16. If you would like to participate in any of these events and have not submitted your request, there is still time.

For the New Orleans event, contact Trooper Jackson at (504) 570-0631. For the Fort Leavenworth event, contact Trooper Bruce at (816) 716-9537. For the Houston event, contact Trooper Griffin at (213) 910-2051. For Celebrate Freedom, contact Trooper Rogers at (704) 516-4173.

There are a lot of ongoing projects and events that would not happen without the effort of many dedicative members. I want to thank all of you for the tremendous job you do for the association.

Please don’t forget to share your newsworthy items with Trooper Don Johnson for the newsletter.

Finally, please keep the families in the association who have suffered the loss of a love one or who are dealing with illness, in your prayers.

Yours in Service,

Willie Edley Jr.,

Buffalo Soldiers Corps Mixing Tea with an Historical Celebration

Recipe for “A Time to Remember”

First Ingredient: The Buffalo Soldiers Corp (BSC) stirred with members of the 9th and 10th (HORSE) Cavalry Association’s Agenda of Historical events, hosts a “High Tea” steeping – guests are cordially invited. During our 150th Anniversary Reunion, from 7 pm to 9 pm, on July 29, 2016, please consider and attend your “High Tea”, replete with assorted nonalcoholic beverages, a salad station, and a token of your BSC appreciation.

History of High Tea: During the 18th Century, tea drinking became more popular when the Queen chose tea over a regular breakfast drink. During the second half of the Victorian Period, known as the Industrial Revolution, working families would return home tired and exhausted. The table would be set with any manner of meats, bread, butter, pickles and “of course tea”. They did not have any of the dainty finger sandwiches, scones and pastries on the menu, as would be on the menu of an afternoon tea. Because it was eaten on a high dinner table rather than a low tea table, it was termed “High Tea”.

Second Ingredient: Take a peek at a timeless tradition, designed to raise funds and promote awareness of the BSC. A high tea is an event that can be enjoyed by members and families of the 9th & 10th (HORSE) Cavalry Association and our communities. As we pondered on the idea of hosting a tea as a commemorative event during this 150th Anniversary Reunion, we researched many books and venues relating to or expanding the history of Tea; be it afternoon or high, we figured this could be an event to excite our members, as well as providing for a worthy cause. Many hotels host afternoon teas, some brides are given a bridal tea, during these affairs people dress a certain way. It was noted that women would dress in their dressiest dresses (if it was summer than a nice form fitting sun dress) with hats (the bigger the better), and gloves. These are all items that we are sure that you have in your closet now, just need to be taken out and worn. Men you should dress in fine suits, white shirt, and tie and to set the outfit off you certainly should wear a hat. Let’s look at bringing back a stylish tradition to set positive examples for our young adults.

The BSC Committee presents an event which may not be recreated, but an affair that our members will remember and can support from now on. The BSC is a mentorship/protégé entity that supports the Presidential Administration’s Kids in the Park initiative, a program that encourages America’s fourth graders and their families to visit and become stewards of our public lands and access to career options for our young adults through AmeriCorps NCCC. We believe that the day will come, when we can look at the BSC, and see the young minds and careers we have shaped with these programs, as Association leaders and members.

Third ingredient: The BSC seeks your support and invites you to mix these ingredients, incite a special feeling, and at-tend our High Tea during the 150th Anniversary Reunion, at 7 pm, on the evening of July 29, 2016. We encourage you to view this event as a start of a tradition, or to just sit back and savior a nice cup of your favorite tea, water, coffee, or refreshing lemonade. Please stay tuned for additional information on the BSC High Tea. Our theme is “A Time to Remember”. We will let you know how you can help make this a success, in your reunion registration package. Remember, start looking at those clothing items mentioned and let’s have a CUP OF TEA. Keep your calendars and minds open for more details.

Signed Trooper Leanna Rogers Member, BSC Committee Menu: Mixed Greens, Romaine Hearts, Spinach, Roasted Mushrooms, Herb Marinated Tomatoes, English Cucumbers, Chopped Eggs, Dried Cranberries, Toasted Almonds, Mandarin Oranges, Goat Cheese, Gorgonzola Cheese, Aged Cheddar Cheese, Parmesan Cheese, Garlic Croutons, Grilled Chicken, Shrimp, Ranch Dressing, Italian Dressing, Caesar Dressing and Bal-samic Vinaigrette

Troopers Transferred To Fiddler’s Green Since Last Reunion You are urged to report the death of a member, family member and Ladies Auxiliary to the National President, National Chaplin and National 2nd Vice President for dissemination to the membership.

When a cavalrymen dies he begins a long march to his ultimate destination. About half-way along the road he enters a broad meadow dotted with trees and crossed by many streams, known as “Fiddler’s Green”. As he crosses The Green he finds an old canteen, a single spur, and a carbine sling. Continuing on the road he comes to a field camp where he finds all the troopers who have gone before him, with their campfires, tents and pickets lines neatly laid out. All other branches of the military must continue to march without pause. Cavalry though are authorized to dismount, unsaddle and stay in Fiddler’s Green ...their canteens ever full...the grass always green and enjoy the companionship and reminisce with old friends.

Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations ------ Form 990-N (e-Postcard) . Most small tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less are required to electroni-cally submit Form 990-N, also known as e-Postcard, unless they choose to file a complete form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead. If you do not file your e-Postcard on time, the IRS will send you a reminder notice. There is no penalty assessment for late filing the e-Postcard, but an organization that fails to file required e-Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax –exempt status. The revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status will not take place until the filing due date of the third year. Watch the IRS YouTube presentation. The e-Postcard is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. For example, if your tax year ended on December 31, the e- Postcard is due May 15 of the following year. If the due date falls on Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the due date is the next business day. You cannot file the e-Postcard until after your year ends. Ceremony Honoring Colonel Charles Young and the Contributions of America’s Famed “Buffalo Soldiers,” The Black Cavalries and Infantry Regiments

Black soldiers have been fighting and serving alongside their countryman for over 300 years, and the National Coalition of Black Veterans has been at the forefront of celebrating the important contributions of our fellow Americans. The legacy of Colonel Charles Young (1864-1922) exemplifies the contributions of black Americans in our military. Born into slavery and rising to the highest ranking black soldier of his time, Col. Young graduated from West Point in 1889 and went on to serve as the first black military attaché and the first black superintendent of a National Park. Were it not for the deep, systemic racism of the time, we believe that Col. Young would have been honored with the title of General in the U.S. Army. It has been the goal of the National Coalition of Black Veterans to urge President Obama to officially bestow the honorary promotion of Brigadier General to Young.

In this spirit, The National Coalition of Black Veterans in commemoration with the 150th Anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers and their legacy cordially invite you to a ceremony honoring our country’s first black cavalry and infantry regiments-- soldiers first designated as “colored troops” in the summer of 1866. The soldiers were given the moniker “buffalo soldiers” by our Native American brothers and sisters during the period of the Western Expansion. These soldiers hold an important place in American history. A bronze miniature of the legendary Colonel Charles Young has been created to honor the contributions of past and present black Americans serving their country in defense of the nation. In June of this year we will be presenting it to the National Afro-American Museum and Culture Center for exhibit along with many other pieces from the extraordinary life of Col. Young including artwork, medals, and even the legendary Buffalo Soldier’s personal saber. The bronze maquette will remain on display until it is transferred to the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument in Wilberforce, Ohio. The Museum and Culture Center is an inspiring American treasury focusing mainly on African-American history in the 20th Century, but also tracing black American roots and influences as far back as the 19th. The ceremony and exhibit is open to the general public, but we greatly encourage veteran and serving soldiers and military members to come and learn about our enduring legacy. Following the ceremony, a tour of the National Museum and Culture Center as well as a VIP tour of Col. Young’s birthplace in Mays Lick, Kentucky. June 1st at 11:00am National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center 1350 Brush Row Road Wilberforce, Ohio Free Submitted by Trooper Michael Theard
