District 1 Public Safety Advisory Board
Thank you to SDPD Officers Gapusen and Marchnak from the K-9
Unit, Community Relations Officer Philips, and Lt. Phillips for
presenting at our June 17th Public Safety Advisory Board in Carmel
Valley. It was great to learn more about the K-9 heroes who help
prevent officer-involved shootings by rapidly subduing dangerous
perpetrators. I was impressed by the level of training and expertise that
goes into developing these highly-skilled police dogs. Thanks to Pico
and his pack for keeping our community safe! If you are interested in
joining the District 1 Advisory Boards: Public Safety, Seniors, or Small
Business, please contact our office at [email protected]; 619-
236-6611.
Breaking Ground at the Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park
On June 23rd, I attended the groundbreaking for the new Pacific
Highlands Ranch Community Park, and I am grateful for this fun
new addition to the neighborhood. Pacific Highlands Ranch is
one of the most exciting growing communities in San Diego—
more than 1,600 homes with 20 percent of them affordable, five
schools, a fire station, a major shopping center, now a park and
soon a library. Thanks to Park and Rec staff, Pardee Homes,
and the community residents who worked together on this
innovative park design.
Del Mar Heights District 1 Residents, Avoid Extra Fees at the DMV
If you live in the Del Mar Heights area, but are a resident of the City of San Diego, you may have paid
an extra 1% to the DMV when transferring the ownership of your vehicle. The City of Del Mar
assesses a 1% fee on transfers of ownership in addition to the county and state fees the City of San
Diego requires. To avoid the additional 1% fee, San Diego City residents living within the Del Mar
Heights area should use the address “San Diego, CA 92014” instead of “Del Mar, CA 92014” when
submitting your transfer of ownership form. The DMV can provide a form if you are a San
Diego resident and would like to seek a refund for this 1% fee. Please note that the DMV cannot issue
a refund if the fee was paid more than three years ago. Please contact Justine Murray at
[email protected] for assistance with the refund process.

Brush Cleanup Along Fay Ave. Bike Path Our office recently assisted the Kiwanis Club chapter of La Jolla in obtaining a City permit to carry out brush management along the Fay Avenue Bike Path. Over the weekend of June 2
nd, dozens of Kiwanis
Club members and community residents helped remove weeds from the bike path. An estimated 40 55-gallon trash bags of dry grasses and 8 truckloads of brush were removed. Thank you to the volunteers for your efforts to reduce the risk of fire as we approach the dry season. Thank you also to City staff for ensuring the safe and rapid disposal of the brush.
City Wheelchair Program Helps Riders Enjoy the Sand
With the summer beach season in full swing, thousands of visitors and
residents will flock to San Diego’s world famous beaches. With an array
of options available to have fun in the sun, the City of San Diego takes
proactive steps to ensure that as many people can enjoy the sand and
the water as possible. The City’s free Beach Wheelchair Program is
one such program that gives those with mobility impairments the
opportunity to explore the sand and get closer to the water than they
ever could before. For more information about this program, call
Therapeutic Recreation Services, a division of the Park and Recreation
Department: (619) 525-8247.
Pedestrian Safety Improvements on La Jolla Mesa Drive
In the coming weeks, a new section of the sidewalk on the south side
of La Jolla Mesa Drive will be installed to improve pedestrian safety in
La Jolla. This new sidewalk will provide a safe path to walk along La
Jolla Mesa Drive. I want to thank City staff and the Transportation and
Storm Water Department for prioritizing this project to enhance
pedestrian safety in our community.
District 1 Intern Update By Justine Murray
I am a junior at UCSD, studying European history, with a minor in political science. I have wanted to work in the political sphere since middle school, and I am so glad District 1 has allowed me to join the office and learn the inter-workings of City Hall and local politics. I knew of Barbara from her campaign, and I really believe in what she advocates for as a councilmember. My favorite part about being an intern by far is constituent service. I love that we have the ability to help residents in such a hands-on way, and I feel like we're actually making a difference in the community. I truly look forward to coming to the office every day. Everyone is incredibly welcoming, and I’m extremely lucky to work for a group of people who allow me to participate in more than just normal "intern duties" and gain real government experience. I can’t imagine a better opportunity!
