National Young Leadership Conference Last week I was fortunate enough to accompany the 2011 School Captains, Jackson Spinks and Sarah Dilges, to the National Young Leaders Conference in Melbourne. This was an outstanding experience with students listening to motivational speeches from Jules Lund, Vanessa Amorosi, Lydia Lassila and Daniel Flynn, the founder of Thank You Water. Super Fish Next week is the beginning of our Primary Swim School. Teaching students to swim is an lifelong skill which will always be beneficial in the future. Young Leaders Last Friday our prospective Junior Leaders for 2011 presented their speech to the primary students. These students demonstrated excellent public speaking skills and handled themselves

very well. These students also participated in an interview with Mr Naylor and myself outlining why they felt they would make an outstanding leader. All candidates presented themselves extremely well and should be proud of their efforts. Marvellous Merits As the year draws to a close and we are trying to organise our Reward Excursions it is important that all students hand in their Merit Award to ensure they reach the appropriate level. Secondary merit awards must be submitted by Monday the 29th of November and Primary by Monday 6th of December. Once these dates have passed students will start receiving 2011 merits. Welfare and Discipline Procedures Recently we have reviewed our procedures that accompany our Welfare and Discipline Policy. Students from Years 3 - 11 have been involved in the consultation and provided feedback. These procedures were also discussed for consultation at the P & C Meeting held on Monday. We are hoping that these procedures make our system transparent and we are trying to include more parent involvement to ensure support from the home.

Flying Start Due to secondary teachers being involved in Swim School our 'Flying Start' program has undergone some changes. Each group will now have a session in preparation for 2011. An outline of the expectations and an overview of subjects being studied will be provided and strategies to support learning will be provided. These days are:

Merit Scheme To reward our students’ positive behaviour Tooleybuc Central School runs a strong Merit Scheme. Students are awarded ‘Merit Awards’ during the school year and an accumulation of these merits equates to levels.

Bronze Level 10 Merits Silver Level Bronze plus and extra 20 Merits Gold Level Silver plus an extra 30 Merits.

Students are given a ‘Lucky Dip’ at the achievement of each level and presented with a certificate at our Whole School Assembly. Those students who achieve Gold Level are invited to attend our End of Year Merit Excursion.

Congratulations to the following students who have demonstrated these values: Kindergarten: Angela Mammone Year 1/2: Kiara Hack Year 3/4: Manu Nimo Year 5/6: Jessica O’Bree Primary Assembly – Leaders 2011 Congratulations must go to the Young Leaders for 2011 after their speeches at the Primary Assembly. They all spoke so confidently and set down their goals as a future leader. The students were then interviewed individually by Ms Wait to discuss their speech and what they would do as a future leader. Students in Years 3-5 voted as to whom they believed would represent them the best as the Junior Leaders in 2011. The Young Leaders will be told in the next few weeks as to the results. Swim School Swim School takes place next week for primary students. Students have been split into two sessions (morning or afternoon). It is important that students take along sunscreen, hat, water bottle and a towel which have their names clearly marked on them. Students will be grouped according to ability. If you have any concerns with the program please contact the school.

No Hat Play in the Shade Term 4 requires that all students wear a hat if they wish to play in the sun. Otherwise they play under the shelter or on the play equipment under the shade sail. It is important that your child have a hat to play to prevent sun burn. Also could you make sure the hat has a name to stop hats from being lost. Mosquitoes There are at present many mosquitoes in the school classrooms and grounds. Students may bring roll on Aeroguard to use during the school day. Year Three and Four Ballarat Excursion The Year 3/4 excursion to Ballarat was excellent. We had a wonderful time and did many amazing things. On the first day we went to the art gallery and looked at many paintings, and then we got to have a go at re-creating a picture using water colour pastels. That night we went to see Blood on the Sothern Cross which was amazing. It is a re-enactment of the Eureka Rebellion. It was very loud, and scared a few of the kids. On Thursday we went to Sovereign Hill and did many things like candle dipping, underground mine tours, panning and old fashion bowling, we also had the chance to dress up as a lady or man from the 1850’s in the education centre. Plus be got to buy lots of lollies. The day was fantastic. That night we went to La Porchetta for dinner and had pizza. After that we went Disco Bowling, which was very fun. On Friday we went to the Wildlife park and were able to pat the kangaroos and Emu’s and see crocodiles and tortoises. Thank you to the teachers and parents who attended the excursion and Mrs McKindlay for all her organisation. By Hayley Cordwell. Secondary Report

English The students in Year 7 and 8 have been busily working on building their spelling skills with a weekly test on difficult and challenging words. Peer marking is proving to be popular as students check each other’s accuracy. We have also been working on a ‘Superhero’ project, using visual literacy skills. Some of the ‘superheroes’ show the great imaginative skills of our students.

Year 9 have been working on their ‘Survivor’ Diary Entries, with ‘blogs’ proving to be popular, as they imagine themselves as castaways with little chance of being rescued. The students continue to build their technology skills on their laptops.

The ‘new’ Year 12’s have got off to a flying start with the Area of Study, ‘Belonging’ being studied with enthusiasm. The students are to be commended on their sustained effort as the year winds down, and they begin Year 12.

Jack Spinks of Year 12, is to be congratulated on becoming a published author with his contribution to the Riverina booklet. His narrative describes his relationship with the countryside. Well done Jack!

Personal Development, Health & Physical Education The PDHPE classes have been working steadily at TCS and have been enjoying the warm weather and summer sports on offer.

Year 7/8 PDHPE The year 7/8 PDHPE class has been working very hard in Term 4. Practically we have been focusing on gymnastics. This has taken the form of group, partner and individual work. Everyone in this class can now cartwheel, handstand and perform vault. Check out the pictures for some talent on display.

Year 9/10 PDHPE Year 9 PDHPE has been focusing on movement composition this term with some success. Movement composition comes in all forms and can be indentified in just about any physical activity – think of a game play you run in your weekend sport and that is a movement composition. I look forward to seeing what the Year 9’s have come up with for their assessment task.

Year 9 PASS This elective group has been working hard on outdoor pursuits. They now understand the planning behind any off campus activities run by the school as they have been completing risk assessment matrix’s for many outdoor activities. This class particularly enjoyed their walk out to

Tooleybuc Lake identifying various risks along the way. Year 11 PDHPE The Stage 6 PDHPE class has been working steadily on the HSC Course. Currently they are studying Factors Affecting the Health of Australians. It is particularly interesting to study the epidemiology of Rural and Remote Areas. Nyah West Tennis Club Sunday

Coaching Our Club will be hosting 4 Coaching Clinics On Sunday Oct 31st, Nov 14th, Nov 28th & Dec 12th 2010. We will again have Registered TCA Professional Coach David Starling, travel from Echuca to run these clinics. All children should wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring their own drink and racquet. (David will have some spare racquets available). Nb: Children who participate in 3 weeks will receive a Hot Shots T-shirt. Parents will have to fill out an enrolment form to participate. Times are as follows but may change depending on numbers. All clinics are $20 for 1 ½ hrs.

Beginners start at 8.30am.

Intermediate (can play or rally a ball over net) start at 10.00am

Experienced start at 11.30am.

Skin Cancer Awareness Week

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australia. Skin Cancer is normally divided into two categories: Non Melanoma skin cancers and Melanoma. Non melanoma skin cancers include basal cell carcinoma(BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma(SCC). If you notice any changes consult your doctor immediately If you have had any form of skin cancer or there is any family history then you should have regular skin checks. Please discuss this with your GP. Skin cancers are usually curable if detected early. Treatment will involve removing the cancer, by cutting out the affected area. This is called a local excision. Other removal methods include cryotherapy, (freezing with liquid nitrogen) radiation or anticancer drugs applied to the skin. REMEMBER: Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap a pair of sunglasses around your eyes. Apply sunscreen every 2 hours and wear a hat As well as being Sun Smart remember to be Mozzie Smart

Apply mosquito repellent regularly(every 4 hrs)

Use insecticide in sleep areas

Wear light coloured, loose fitting clothing with long sleeves and legs

Ensure flyscreens on houses, caravans and annexes are in good order

Cover water tanks and open water containers to reduce breeding areas

Use insecticide aerosol spray when necessary
