Students Leaving Early, Arriving Late Just a reminder that if students are leaving school they should bring a note, or parents should call the Front Office in the morning. A leave pass will then be created for the student to collect at recess and give to their teacher so they can leave class early. If your child arrives to school late then it is important that they sign in through the office and that you explain their absence. Don't forget if you are collecting your child from the school rather than them going on the bus please let the office know so they can be taken off bus rolls.

Conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection, especially among children under five. It is an inflammation (swelling and redness) of the conjunctiva which is the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.

Causes Conjunctivitis can be caused by an infection (virus or bacteria), which is highly contagious, or by an allergic reaction which is not contagious. You could develop conjunctivitis if you come into contact with:

Discharge from the eyes, nose or throat of an infected person through touch, coughing and sneezing

Contaminated fingers or objects

In summertime, conjunctivitis can be spread when kids swim in contaminated water or share contaminated towels

You will remain infectious as long as there is a discharge from your eye

Signs and symptoms Conjunctivitis can be caused by an infection (virus or bacteria) or by an allergic reaction. It is not always clear which type of conjunctivitis is present, because both cause redness and swelling of the conjunctiva. Symptoms usually develop within 24 to 72 hours of becoming infected and last from two days to three weeks.

Bacterial Conjunctivits Both eyes are almost always infected with bacterial conjunctivitis, although it may start in one eye. There is likely to be a gritty feeling and pus.

Viral Conjunctivitis Conjunctivitis from a virus may involve one or both eyes, causing red itchy eyes with a discharge.

Allergy If the inflammation is the result of an allergy, there are often other signs of hay fever, including itchy nose and sneezing or a history of other allergic conditions. The eyes are itchy and watery. Other Symptoms

redness behind the eyelid, spreading up the white of the eye

swelling of the eye/s, appearing puffy

excessive tears

a discharge from the eye, which dries when the child sleeps, causing crusting around the eyelids

photophobia (a dislike of bright lights)

Treatment Viral conjunctivitis There is no specific treatment, it will get better on its own. Gentle cleaning of the eyes with cotton balls soaked in warm water may help them feel better. Clean in one direction only (either towards the nose from the outside in, or away from the nose, whichever is easier) discarding the cotton ball each time to prevent recontamination. DO NOT CLEAN INSIDE THE EYELIDS AS THIS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CONJUCTIVA.

Bacterial conjunctivitis May need antibiotic ointment or drops from your doctor. Treatment should be applied to both eyes, even if only one eye appears to be infected.

Allergic conjunctivitis May be helped by treatment used in conditions such as hay fever eg antihistamines.

Follow-up See a doctor if your child has:

severe pain

problems with their vision/eye sight

increased swelling, redness, and tenderness in the eyelids and around the eye

is generally unwell and has a fever (temperature over 38oC)

Key points to remember

Conjunctivitis can be an infectious or allergic condition: if infectious it is often highly contagious

Symptoms last from two days to three weeks

Be sure to wash hands with warm soapy water often to prevent the infection spreading to others

Do not share eye drops, tissues, make-up, towels, or pillowcases with other people

Children with conjunctivitis should be kept home from childcare and school

The child is infectious until discharge from eye has disappeared

Primary News Simon Dunn (Assistant Principal) This term is already starting to slip away and has been very busy. In the coming weeks everybody will be working with some special visitors who are coming to share their knowledge with us. It was great to see so many parents once again supporting their children at the Athletics carnival. Bus Safety We have a large number of students that rely on buses to get to and from school each day. It is very important that while students are on the bus they remain seated and listen to instructions from the bus driver. If students are moving around the bus or standing up and the bus has to stop quickly then the chances of someone getting hurt are dramatically increased. The same can be said if people are not following instructions and the driver becomes distracted. If your children travel on the bus please talk to them about the importance of sitting down while the bus is moving and listening to instructions from the driver. Visiting Author On Thursday the 30th of May and Friday the 1st of June we are very lucky to again have an author visit and work with all of our Primary classes. David Miller will be running workshops looking at the process of writing, paper illustrating and creating a paper sculpture. Athletics Carnival Last Friday was the school’s Athletics carnival. It was fantastic to see so many of the students participating in the various events as well as supporting everyone who had a go. In Primary, the champions and runners up were: Junior Boy Champion Brees Runner up Cooper Junior Girl Champion Sara Runner up Madison Senior Boy Champion Lane Runner up Murray Senior Girl Champion Laura Runner up Demi Congratulations to these people and to everybody who participated on the day. Year 4/5/6 News The term is slipping away very quickly and the students have been very busy. As mentioned earlier we will have David Miller come and work with us shortly and the students in Years 4/5/6 also

have the opportunity to participate in the Tea Cup Tumble science and circus show on the 22nd of May. The cost of this show has been heavily subsidised by the school so that we can get as many people to the show as possible as it is such a wonderful educational opportunity. If you have not returned your note and money please do so as soon as possible. If you have lost the note please ask at the office for another copy. I was very happy to have the opportunity earlier on in the term to meet with so many parents to discuss your child’s progress in class. If there are any parents who could not make it on that particular night but would like to speak to me please contact the school or send a note in with your child so that we can arrange a suitable time. As part of the class behaviour management system our class will be having a whole class reward afternoon. The class have voted to have an electronics day reward. This day is a reward for the improved focus and dedication that students have shown in class. Please congratulate your child on their contribution to this whole class reward.

Red Undies Week

27 May-2 June 2012

Kidney disease is a significant health issue in Australia-over 50 people die a day with kidney related disease, and 1.7million Australian adults have at least one sign of kidney disease. Early detection, treatment and awareness of kidney diseases can ‘save lives and reduce the need for dialysis’. Are you at risk?

- Have high blood pressure - Are obese - Are a smoker - Have established heart problems - Have diabetes - Have a family history of kidney disease - Are 60yrs or older - Are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin

If you answer yes to any of these questions see your health professional for a Kidney Health Check (a blood test and urine test, as well as a blood pressure check). Learn more about kidney disease, Kidney Health Australia’s events and activities and how to donate to this important cause by calling 1800 454 363 or visiting our website at www.kidney.org.au

PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF DRAFT COMBINED DELIVERY PROGRAM 2012-2017 & OPERATIONAL PLAN 2012-2013; AND DRAFT RESOURCING STRATEGY 2012-2022

The Draft Combined Delivery Program 2012-2017 & Operational Plan 2012-2013, and the Draft Resourcing Strategy 2012-2022 for delivering the goals and objectives of Wakool Shire Council’s Vision 2022 - Community Strategic Plan adopted earlier this year, will be on public exhibition from 25 May until 22 June 2012. The Draft Combined Delivery Program 2012-2017 & Operational Plan 2012-2013 describes what Council and the local community will do each year over the next five years to achieve the objectives of Vision 2022, and more precisely, what will occur during the 2012-2013 financial year. The Draft Resourcing Strategy 2012-2022 describes the resources that will be gathered and applied over the next ten years towards achieving the objectives of Vision 2022. It includes Council’s Draft Asset Management Plans, Workforce Management Strategy and 10 Year Financial Plan 2012-2022.

The Draft documents can be accessed on Council’s website at: www.wakool.nsw.gov.au or they can be viewed at Council’s offices in Moulamein and Barham or at the Moulamein Business Centre, Moulamein Library, Barham Library, Tooleybuc Post Office/Newsagency, Goodnight General Store, Wakool Café, Wakool Library, Koraleigh General Store, Murray Downs Motor Inn and Swan Hill Regional Library.
