S OUTH TEXAS WRITING P ROJECT 2 July 19,2010 www.thebridgenewspaper.com By Dr. Bernice Sanchez Perez The Bridge Contributor Dear Laredo Community, As Director of the South Texas Writing Project, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their con- tinued support of the STWP Federal Grant. The South Texas Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, has been part of the Laredo communi- ty for 12 years and is currently housed at Texas A&M International University within the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Education. Our mission both locally and nationally is continued focus on the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation's educa- tors on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners. The South Texas Writing Project supports a community of writ- ers, supports volunteer work within the com- munity, provides professional development opportunities, and provides summer youth camps for kids. The community of writers, known as Teacher Consultants, engages in Writing Retreats and volunteer service work in conjunction with community organizations throughout the year. Our annual fall conference consists of various professional development sessions across grade levels and content areas. The Summer Institute presents on-going pro- fessional development opportunities and gradu- ate credit through TAMIU. Summer Youth camps at TAMIU for elementary and secondary students focus on student centered activities that integrate reading, writing, and technology within fun learning environments. Overall, the primary goal of our youth summer camps is to encourage the importance of reading and writ- ing and love of learning in the early and adoles- cent years of Laredo's youth. Once again thanks to the Laredo community and TAMIU for its continued support of the South Texas Writing Project. STWP strives to help our Laredo community embrace writing and build a communi- ty of lifelong learners at any age. We thank those of you who have already taken part of our many activities such as the Sacred Heart Children's Toiletry Drive, the Summer Institute and these summer's camps: “Exploring the Universe through Writing,” “Writing and Reading in the Digital Age,” “The Super Media Patrol Camp,” and “Writing and Reading 101.” We are community united in ensuring that everyone, including students and teach- ers, strengthen their writing skills is sure to reap the bene- fits for years to come. The South Texas Writing Project hosted several writing camps in an effort to help stu- dents from both primary and secondary schools with their writing. Through the planetarium, the students were taught to soar through space, write in a digital age and the basics in reading and writing. The STWP, in conjunction with The Bridge Student Newspaper, held its first writ- ing camp for future journalists and photojournalists. All the camps provided different methods of writing for the stu- dents that established a fun and creative atmosphere. “These camps help to enrich the minds of the students with hands-on activities and cre- ative writing,” stated Daniela Rodriguez, STWP Co- Director. Through the STWP, students from schools around Laredo and Encinal have ben- efited from the dedicated pro- fessors and their interest in writing. These camps have given many students a good university experience and will continue to do so for years to come.
