Let the Olympic Games in Rio inspire you this summerNow that the brighter days have arrived,

its time we encourage the kids to put

down the electronic devices and spend

more time being active. Sadly, it is no secret

that children in Brent have worse than

    average levels of obesity.

    Childhood obesity is associated with

    significant health problems including Type

2 diabetes and lack of physical activity is

amongst one of the biggest causes.

    However, with

    the Olympic

    Games in Rio

    and Euro 2016

    in France soon

    set to dominate our TV

    sets, we have a great

    opportunity to be inspired by

    the worlds greatest athletes,

some of whom are local, and get the whole

family off the sofa and active this summer.

Weve pulled together a detailed round-up

of all the best local activities many of which are

    absolutely free. See pages 12-15.

Along with the many sporting activities

on offer, Granville and Roundwood Youth

Centres also have many activities for

young people to enjoy including arts,

crafts, DJing, and drama. Being active is

not just good for the body but its great

for the mind too. For more information

I am extremely proud of Brent. Our green

Its good news for children and families in Brent as 91 per cent of schools in the borough are now rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

There are 84 schools in Brent which include 59 primary schools, 12 secondary schools, four nurseries, four special schools, two pupil referral units and three all-through schools, which provide both primary and secondary education.

In the last four months, the Ofsted judgements of three Brent schools have moved from Requires Improvement to Good, one has improved from Inadequate to Good and one has moved from Good to Outstanding.

Tooth decay amongst five-year-olds in the borough has seen the biggest decrease in London 15.1 per cent.

These figures are promising but the need for regular brushing, avoiding sugary

snacks and drinks, and the importance of regular dentist visits is still important.

  • New park opens in South KilburnFamilies in South Kilburn were the first to enjoy Woodhouse Urban Park, when it officially opened in May.

The park features modern, robust wooden play equipment from swings to climbing frames, and new seating areas perfect for families.

Cllr Butt, Leader of Brent Council said:Woodhouse Urban Park is a stunning

new open space which sits in the heart of the transformation of South Kilburn. Designed in consultation with local residents they can feel a sense of ownership over it and take pride in their own community space.

Thousands of new homes, student accommodation, shops, places to relax and have fun, are all coming to Wembley as part of a 2.5 billion regeneration.

Some exciting new developments received planning approval in May including: 4,850 new homes, a new school and student accommodation around Wembley Stadium. These plans will result in 7,000 jobs, new retail and leisure spaces, new community facilities and parking spaces. The plans were submitted by Quintain, the property development company, which owns the land around Wembley Stadium. More than 80 million will also be provided by Quintain to improve the local area.

Away from the stadium, two new residential buildings will replace Chesterfield House in the town centre. These buildings at 21 and 26 storeys high will provide 239 new homes.

The plans for this development received planning approval in April, and will see the creation of a new community space, shops and businesses on the ground floor, and a new public square.

Cllr Roxanne Mashari, Brent Councils Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Growth, Employment and Skills said:

Wembley is our biggest growth area for which we have great ambitions. Its not just about building new homes, but creating a better place where people can access services and jobs, enjoy life and have a strong sense of community.

For more information, turn to pages 30-31. Approvals are subject to consideration by the Mayor of London.

  • Perfect timing for Wembley golfer who hits hole-in-oneA Wembley golfer will have no excuse for missing his next tee-time after he was presented with a limited-edition watch for hitting a hole-in-one. Keith Pretty, 47, a 25-handicapper, was presented with the watch as part of a promotional event at the course having scored his ace on the 139-yard, par-three, 17th hole at Royal Malta Golf Club.

A local teenager who helps out at sports charity for young people has spoken of the benefits of volunteering, as he prepares for university.

Saqlain Choudry, pictured, registered with Volunteering Brent to help develop new skills for his CV and stand out from a competitive crowd when applying for university.

After initially joining the charity Kids Run Free as an ordinary volunteer, Saqlain now manages a small team of volunteers after he was promoted to the position of Running Event Director.

Gaining skills through volunteering in public speaking, managing others, engaging with a variety of people, as well as improving his general confidence, Saqlain said: If you have the time and the capacity to volunteer, you should. I have developed existing skills and am constantly picking up new ones!

Hundreds of new council homes will be provided to help people in need of housing under a 130 million plan agreed by Brent Councils Cabinet this spring.

As well as agreeing to create almost 600 council-owned affordable private rented and temporary accommodation units over the next

three years, councillors also committed the first 10

million to the project, known as the Temporary Accommodation Reform Plan.

The plan includes better help and guidance

for private sector renters in Brent who may be

threatened with eviction, so that they can find

accommodation in areas they can afford at an early stage and avoid homelessness.

Cllr Margaret McLennan, Deputy Leader of Brent Council said: We are to invest a very substantial amount of money and resource into acquiring and developing our own stock of temporary and Local Housing Allowance rent accommodation, so that we can provide more, better affordable housing for those in a crisis situation.

    130m to help homeless people

Potholes, overgrown trees and branches, and faded road markings are just some of the new additions to the list of things you can report with the Cleaner Brent App.

Having made it easier to report litter, illegal rubbish dumping, and other problems in streets and public spaces, the functions of the app are expanding

so that its more useful to report issues to Brent Council.

The changes mean you can now report things like faulty manhole covers, kerbs, bollards, railings, road signs and blocked street drains.

    Reporting street issues is

done in a few simple clicks and is a great way in which you can show that you Love

2million boost for highways in Brent A plan to spend an additional 2 million on improving roads and pavements around the borough has been agreed.

Despite significant cuts in funding from central government, the councils Cabinet agreed an additional 2million, on top of the existing 3.55million annual budget, to improve the maintenance and upkeep of roads and pavements around the borough.

The 2million cash boost will allow the council to extend the life of roads and pavements and reduce the need for multiple return visits. This will mean that more can be done to reduce trip hazards and potentially damaging potholes, and to keep the streets of Brent safe for all to use.

Cllr Eleanor Southwood, Brent Councils Cabinet Member for Environment, said: The state of the roads around the country is a really hot topic and although we do perform well on a London-wide level, residents have told us that they want to see the council doing more.

Bringing all of our roads and pavements up to scratch would cost 100million. Improving our processes and using more cost effective materials will make sure that the funding we do have is used as efficiently as possible.

With this extra investment and better ways of working, I hope well see a borough which is more accessible with far fewer potholes and pavement trips.

  • July is Brent Dance Month and this summer as we celebrate all things Brazil, the spotlight is on capoeira, the Brazilian martial art incorporating acrobatics, dance, percussion, and song.

Capoeira is taught locally by Professor Topera who moved from Brazil to London in 2005 with the goal of bringing the Capoeira Esporao movement to the UK. He now lives in Brent with his wife Arianna and young son.

Describing the martial art, Professor Topera says: Capoeira is a dance, game and martial art. It is malcia (trickery), mandinga (magic), it is everything the mouth can eat. It has a beginning but no end. Believe in capoeira, it is life. Learn to live, live and let live, play and let play.

Nathan Fox is one of Great Britains most impressive triple jump talents. After breaking the UK under-15 national record at 14, he became the first and only person of that age in British history to jump over 14 meters.

The Brent Magazine (TBM) caught up with him at one of his many training sessions at Vale Farm Sports Centre in North Wembley ahead of this years Olympic Games.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN SPORTS?Around the age of 9 or 10, before that my main interests were watching cartoons and playing computer games.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Definitely competing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which was an amazing experience. Being able to make the final and jump in front of 50,000 people was special.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE TIPS FOR KEEPING FIT? My top three tips would be: Be consistent as much as possible; Dont stick to the same workout everyday, and have fun with it!

HERE IN BRENT WE ARE TRYING TO SLASH SUGAR AND GET THE BOROUGH EATING LESS OF THE SWEET STUFF. HAVE YOU ANY TIPS FOR EATING HEALTHIER? I also have a bit of a sweet tooth, but having lots of fruits like mangos, pineapples and grapes seem to keep the cravings at bay. I normally have them with my breakfast or lunch to keep me going throughout the day. INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF?

I recently started my own business along with three of my friends from school (London Reign Sports) which we use as a platform to help promote ourselves as well as inspire the next generation to achieve their dreams.

IF YOU WERENT AN ATHLETE WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?I honestly have no clue because sport has been a part of my life for so long, but I do have a degree in business and in school I wanted to become a journalist.

WE ARE FEELING ALL NOSTALGIC HERE AT TBM AND REMINISCING ABOUT THE 2012 LONDON OLYMPICS. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THE LONDON GAMES? My favourite memory is being in Sweden for a competition and watching Super Saturday with a bunch of other British athletes in our hotel room. Even though I didnt make the team for that Olympics, it sparked a fire in me that I would make sure not to miss the next one!

GOOD LUCK IN RIO NATHAN WELL ALL BE ROOTING FOR YOU!

16 year old Willesden teenager Yasmine Serwah Fosu is on a mission to make history as the

first Ghanian to qualify for fencing at the Olympic Games.

Yasmine has the opportunity and development trajectory to compete in

four Olympic cycles in her sporting lifetime. The Qualifier for Rio was her first experience of the elite level of Olympians and she held her own. But with only one slot available

she was not able to get there quite yet. However, she is

ranked in the top 100 of the

world and at the age of 16 she is by far the youngest in the senior rankings.

Fencing since she was eight years old, Yasmine was offered a scholarship to train at Plymouth College which boasted four youth Olympians including two medal winners in swimming and diving at the London Olympics. The following year, she was offered a further scholarship by Millfield School who have had Olympians in a variety of disciplines at every Olympic Games since 1956.

Yasmine is fiercely ambitious with a strong will to achieve and is extremely proud of her heritage and being a Ghanaian.

The Brent Magazine wish her all the best on her journey to qualify for the Olympics.

    This teenager wont be foiled

Meet Tony Greyson-Newman, who has a dream to take sprint kayaking by storm. The sportsman who represents Jamaica was born in Brent to Jamaican parents and his can-do attitude and zest for life is infectious.

Also known as The Jamaican Kayaksman Tony has competed internationally in Spain and Ireland and hoped to compete at the Rio Olympics but unfortunately Jamaicas membership of the International Canoe Federation cannot be confirmed until November. However, Tony is determined and aiming for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Tony hopes to compete in more than 52 races nationally and internationally until then.

On a recent trip to Jamaica, Tony was delighted to meet Christian Stokes, one of the first Jamaican bobsleigh team members (as depicted in the movie Cool Runnings) who gave him great encouragement to follow his dreams.

Tony has also been appointed core brand ambassador for the Kingston Aquatic Sport Centre, in Downtown Kingston, Jamaica.

Tony still lives in Brent and trains in London. If, like Tony, you fancy making a splash visit the Phoenix Canoe Club and Outdoor Centre located

next to the Welsh Harp Reservoir. The Club caters for both juniors (minimum age nine years) and seniors with a programme of training, events and activities.

  • Am I affected?Couples and single parents of working age who are on Housing Benefit can currently receive up to 500 per week in total benefits from the government, and a single person can receive up to 350. This is known as the Overall Benefit Cap.

This cap not only includes your Housing Benefit, but all other benefits that you may be receiving too. Take a look at the full list in the blue box (right).

There are some exemptions to the cap. For example, if you or a member of your household are receiving disability benefits. See the full list of exemptions in the red box (right).

From this autumn, the benefit cap is being reduced in London to 442.31 per week for couples and single parents, and to 296.35 for single people a reduction of more than 50 a week per household. This means that if you currently receive more than this new amount, your housing benefit will be reduced to bring what you receive into line with the new cap level, which could create issues in paying rent.

What can I do about it?Dont wait until the cap comes in. If youre affected, take action now.

    FIND WORK

Getting into work would bring in some extra income to the home which would help reduce the effect of the new benefit cap and if you work enough hours, you will be completely exempt from the cap.

    APPLY FOR WORKING TAX CREDIT

If youre entitled to WorkingTax Credit, your benefits then wont be capped. To qualify, you will need to work at least 16 hours per week if you are a single parent; 24 hours per week between you if you are a couple with one of you working at least 16 hours per week; or 30 hours per week if you are a single person.

BENEFITS CUTS ARE COMINGLater this year, the government will cut the amount of benefits that can be received by a household. Will it affect you?

    Job Seekers Allowance

Employment and Support Allowance (except where it is paid with the support component)

    MONEY

    SPEAK TO YOUR LANDLORD

If the new benefit cap will affect how much benefit you receive, and you rent privately, speak to your landlord about your situation, before the cap comes in. It might be possible to negotiate a lower rent.

    FIND MORE AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION

If you are unable to negotiate a more affordable rent with your landlord, you may need to move to more affordable accommodation. It is always better to plan ahead and look into a move now, rather than later on when there will be less time remaining before the cap comes in.

    BUDGETING

If you are only capped by a small amount, you may be able to take a look at your current outgoings and see if there are any savings you could make, such as where you do the weekly shop or the brand of products you buy.

    ACCESS OTHER BENEFITS

The new overall benefit cap will not affect some households in receipt of benefits. You will be exempt from the cap if you are in receipt of any of the benefits in the red box. Check to see if youre exempt.

How can I find out more?As we mentioned above, the cap is a government policy which the council is required to administer through the Housing Benefit scheme. Further details are available on the governments website at www.gov.uk/benefit-cap

Further information on the overall Benefit Cap and options that may be available to you locally can be found on the Brent Council website at www.brent.gov.uk/benefits.

    ARE YOU EXEMPT?

You will not be affected by the Overall Benefit Cap changes if you or your partner receive any of the following:

Attendance Allowance Disability Living Allowance Personal Independence Payment The support component of Employment and

Support Allowance Industrial Injuries Benefit and equivalent payments

as part of a War Disablement Pension or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme

War Widow or War Widowers Pension Carers Allowance (from Autumn 2016) Guardians Allowance (from Autumn 2016)

Remember the cap applies to working age claimants, so pensioners are also exempt (provided that both members of a couple are pensioners).

  • Health

With around one in 12 people in Brent living with Type 2 Diabetes and numbers of cases rising, Brent Council has recruited 15 Diabetes

Champions to help raise awareness of the signs, symptoms and risks involved and help residents avoid the life-long condition.

My GP only had time to offer limited advice on how to best manage the condition, which left me feeling apprehensive and confused about my health and future, said 50-year-old Chalkhill resident Manjula Daley, who was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes two years ago.

I took it upon myself to research the condition online. I gathered lots of useful information, which made me so much more aware of my condition.

Helping sufferersHaving new-found knowledge and first-hand experience of the condition, Manjula put herself forward to be one of Brents 15 Diabetes Champions, to help others reduce their chances of becoming diabetic.

Brent Council were looking for community diabetes champions and I jumped at the chance. Along with the knowledge I had gained for myself and training from the Council and Diabetes UK, I was equipped with the necessary skills to become a champion and help the community.

As a Diabetes Champion I run a monthly support group and help to raise awareness at local events and carry out Diabetes Know Your Risk assessments.

Having the condition myself, and understanding the difficulties and challenges involved in having to make lifestyle changes has motivated me to help others in a similar situation.

The appreciation shown by the people I have empowered is overwhelming. Knowing that I could be making a difference and helping to improve someones life is the reward.

MANJULAS TIPS FOR BEATING TYPE 2 DIABETES Your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes is a combination of your genes and your lifestyle. But heres the good news: It is possible to prevent pre-diabetes from developing into Type 2 Diabetes. Eating healthy food, losing weight, staying at a healthy weight, and being physically active can help you bring your blood glucose level back into the normal range.

  • We all know the problems an infestation of rats, wasps or insects can create in your home or workplace. Now, the new Brent Pest Control service can deal with them for you...

    ...who you gonna call?

The words pest control are enough to strike fear into the hearts of homeowners and business owners everywhere, and the prospect of facing rats, cockroaches and bugs on a daily basis would leave many of us

running for the hills. But for Brent Pest Control, its all part of the service.

No two days are the same, said Craig Johnstone, Pest Control Manager at Brent Pest Control.

You never know what youre going to find. One day you might be crawling through an attic hunting mice, and another day you might be on the roof treating a violent wasps nest.

Solving each unique problem has a significant impact on the residents quality of life and its important that we look for the source and reason for the infestation, as well as ensuring we remove those pests from the customers premises.

Elizabeth Millen, from Willesden, knows more than anyone the stress caused by having unwelcomed visitors in the house.

Ive had a problem with rats in my home.

I contacted a private company last summer that dealt with the initial invasion but didnt solve the long term problem.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth is not the only

homeowner to have experienced this frustration. All too often, homeowners are left concerned and disappointed to find that the private pest control service they employed simply plugged the gap, but didnt solve the problem.

I contacted the Brent Pest Control service in January this year, Eileen said. The team have been absolutely fantastic. They went straight to the source of the infestation and regularly checked until they were fully satisfied the problem was solved.

Each officer that came was helpful and full of excellent advice. I really cannot sing their praises highly enough.

Brent Pest Control offers a wide range of services at very competitive prices for residents and businesses throughout the borough. The service also provides advice and support for anyone concerned that they might have a pest problem.

Keep your properties well maintained and keep an eye out for any nooks and crannies that might allow an intruder to come in.

KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED AND YOUR EARS OPEN

A pest problem can escalate very quickly, so stay alert to any signs that you might have company. Watch out for any tell tale signs: including droppings, gnawed food packaging and unexplained bites,

and listen out for strange sounds coming from your loft or under the floorboards.

STAY CLEAN AND TIDY Food is one of the key requirements for pests, so make sure you dont leave any crumbs or food waste lying around.

ACT FAST If you think you have a problem, contact Brent Pest Control as soon as possible. Pests multiply at an alarming rate so the longer you wait, the worse it will get.

    GET A BRENT WORKS APPRENTICESHIP

    JOBS & SKILLS

Brent Works apprenticeships allow 16-24 year olds to study for a qualification while working and earning a salary. For 17-year-old Kamarie, who is on an apprentice-ship as a Branch Administrator at

Unison, it was the perfect way forward.I didnt enjoy school, and I think at the time

I wasnt mature enough to continue with my studies, Kamarie told The Brent Magazine. Im more hands on, and thrive where I can learn a task by doing it. So, as soon as I left school, I applied for an apprenticeship.

Having completed her one-year Business Administration Level 2 course, she wanted something more. I wanted to keep learning, and do something new. A co-worker told me about Brent Works, and encouraged me to contact them.

The Brent Works Apprenticeship Service helps young people take their first steps towards their career goals. By working directly with employers, the Brent Works team recruit skilled young people into roles which suit their aims, and ensure Brent businesses are building a strong and capable workforce.

When Kamarie first visited Brent Works, she was given a formal assessment, to find out what her skills were, and match her with the best position. She was then given guidance before being put forward for an interview with Unison.

The advice was fantastic. I wasnt able to take time off my job to have any practice interviews, so Brent Works took the time to call me, and give me interview training over the phone.

Im not a naturally confident person, and I get nervous easily. But with Brent Works, we worked on my communication skills, which included how I should act and how I should speak in an interview.

I felt so much better after getting their

advice and support. I was able to think on my feet during the interview.

Kamarie was successful with her interview, and is now well on her way to achieving her Level 3 in Business Administration, a qualification equivalent to an A-Level.

I would definitely tell anyone interested in apprenticeships to speak to Brent Works. The team is kind and helpful, and their process is really simple and effective. They do great work for young people searching for jobs.

    Cllr Roxanne Mashari, Brent Councils

Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Growth, Employment and Skills, said:

The apprenticeship service at Brent Works brings new opportunities for young people to start their careers, while also allowing for our local businesses to build a strong workforce,

and inspire a new generation of workers into their industry.

  • Community clean-ups, reporting dumped rubbish, recycling more, and beautiful garden displays are just some of the ways in which you can show love for where you live this summer

Since its launch on Valentines Day this year, and with the backing of residents groups and the Brent and Kilburn Times, the councils Love Where You Live campaign is starting to make a positive

difference to life in Brent. The Cleaner Brent app has now been downloaded over 1,400 times, and since February it has been used to report 4,500 instances of littering, illegally dumped rubbish and other unsightly problems thats up a whopping 79 per cent between February and May 2016. In

the space of just a month, from February to March 2016, how much you recycle leapt from 1,453 tonnes to 1,644 tonnes a 13 per cent increase.

What are you doing to show you Love where you live?Cairnfield Residents Association in Neasden promotes and champions the interests of seven streets in the area.

Diana Ayres, a leading member of the group, has helped to launch a best front garden competition to the 480 homes covered by the association.

Diana said:We want to make the area nicer for residents. The competition is also a great way to meet people and get the community working together. Its been a joy to organise and the residents have been very enthusiastic and upbeat about it.

Its part of several initiatives that the Cairnfield Residents Association is doing to improve the area. We work closely with

Veolia who attend our residents meetings and clear up reports of dumped

rubbish. We also give out leaflets on how to use the Cleaner Brent app and information on

the bulky waste collections. We encourage our neighbours to look

after their area and help improve its appearance, which everyone benefits from.

Daniels, a local estate agent in Neasden has kindly offered to put up cash prizes of 50 for first place, with 25 and 10 prizes for second and third places.

The winner will be announced on Saturday 9 July at the Neasden Community Festival.

Diana continued: The association tries hard to keep the area clean and tidy and constantly focuses on solutions to reduce the amount of dumping rubbish on the streets, like encouraging residents to report it on the Cleaner Brent app.

Uniformed patrols to target litterbugsTo tackle litterbugs in Brent, the council has approved a one-year pilot scheme for uniformed patrol officers to issue 80 on-the-spot fines for waste offences in the borough.

The private security firm, Kingdom, has been chosen to run the innovative scheme. Dedicated patrol officers will be deployed to hot spot

areas with the intention of issuing Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone caught committing a waste offence anything from dog fouling to littering.

The scheme will complement Brents existing Waste Enforcement Team who investigate littering and illegally dumped rubbish offences in the borough and prosecute offenders.

Diana, from the Cairnfield Residents Association, said:I think the use of uniformed patrol officers is a great idea. If people

get fined then theyre much less likely to litter in the future. Any action that the council can take to improve the area will be a big help.

Its the individuals responsibility to take care of the area and its disappointing that some people spoil it for everyone else.

We know that there are some things in life that worry us but are difficult to discuss. Thats why weve started an important campaign called Its Time to Talk. Father of

three and Leader of the Council Cllr Muhammed Butt explains the idea behind it.

Like many parents, I am often worried about my

children; where they are, what theyre up to, who theyre spending time with. We hear things in the media, follow developing stories on the news and wonder if were doing enough to keep our children safe. Thats why, in Brent, we think Its Time to Talk.

Talking about things like hate crime, extremism,

radicalisation, gang activity or child sexual exploitation isnt easy by any means, but we need to pull together as a community to tackle these issues for the sake of our young people. Brent is one of Britains most diverse boroughs, so this isnt an abstract worry it is real and immediate, and were determined to face it head on.

Over the next year, well be organising events across the borough, highlighting the risks around

the many challenges we face. Most importantly, however, Its Time to Talk is about helping to empower you our residents and community leaders to work alongside us and tackle these important challenges together so that we can protect our young people from being exploited.

As parents and carers, we need to be aware of what the warning signs of things like child sexual exploitation are. This can be a boy or girl missing school, disappearing for days on end, coming home with new trainers, smartphones or other items that we know they cant afford, or hanging around with gangs or older people who you dont know. If you spot any of those early warning signs then its time to talk to someone you can trust.

Thankfully, we are talking about a small minority of young people but

we all still need to be aware of the warning signs. Were determined to have these difficult

conversations and work hard to tackle these issues. Were determined that Its Time to Talk.

Stories of Brent premieres on Friday 17 June and The Brent Magazine has been given exclusive access behind the scenes

They say home is where the heart is, and for many past and

present residents of Brent, that sentiment certainly rings true.

Stories of Brent is a BHP initiative to celebrate what makes this borough special and tells the stories of the people, communities and history of Brent. It brings together residents of all ages, local celebrities and community leaders to

talk about their memories of living in Brent and to

    share why they all love

    where they

    live.

Im so pleased that someone is capturing all the great stuff about this borough, said Danny Maher, CEO of Ashford House, a Brent based resource centre that provides a range of programmes including housing, health, training and employment for vulnerable people.

What makes Brent special? Its diversity and residents enthusiasm to work together and get things done to make this borough somewhere that were all proud of.

The documentary showcases some big names

from the music, television and sporting worlds who were all born and bred in Brent, such as Rachel Yankey, Audley Harrison, and Liz Mitchell of Boney M, and are proud to share their stories and memories of growing up in the borough that shaped and encouraged them to succeed.

MotivationAshley Theophane, British professional boxer, couldnt wait to let us know how he has a special place in his heart for Brent, saying:

As a professional boxer I travel a great deal, but Brent will always be home, wherever I am in the world.

When I come back to visit, its always great to meet the locals - they give me that extra confidence by telling me that they are proud of

what I am doing. This motivates me to keep working hard, as I feel I am representing my

area in a positive way.Brent will always be in my heart, I

grew up here, went to school in

the area. Its one of the most diverse places I know and Im proud to call Brent my home.

As part of the boroughs Love Where You Live campaign, Stories

of Brent is part of the drive to instil a sense of pride in the community and encourages residents to take ownership of the borough and the opportunities available.

Its this pride that drives residents of Brent to work hard, day in, day out, to build a better borough for themselves, and for future generations.

Its for this reason that, together with Brent Council and Oakrays, Brent Housing Partnership (BHP) have reached out and put together Stories of Brent, to celebrate the

boroughs diversity and spirit, and build stronger community cooperation.

Tell us what you think makes Brent special and why you love where you live. Share your Story of Brent by emailing [email protected] or visit www.brent.gov.uk/lovewhereyoulive

The Olympic Games open in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro this summer, and at home, an exciting new exhibition called Brazil to Brent opens at the Library at

Willesden Green. The exhibition asks what it means to be

Brazilian in Brent. The Brent Magazine spoke to Julia Evangelista, the artist leading the

project, to find out more. The whole point of this project was to give

Brazilians a chance to celebrate themselves, and to say in their own words what it means to be Brazilian. One of the

most important things that the people we talked to stressed was the diversity of Brazil. Many emphasised that there are numerous sub-cultures and much more to the country than just samba and carnival.

A theme that came up again and again was the importance of community. In Brazil, people spend a lot of time together. Its a very inclusive society, from the many games and sports that we play that involve the young and the old, to the music, and the food we eat. We do things with other people and build ties this way. Relationships are very important.

Likewise, in Brent, Brazilians have kept this social aspect

of their culture. For instance, in Brazil many shops, not just cafes, will have tables and chairs for customers to sit and chat. If you go to Brazilian shops in Brent youll see the same thing at hairdressers and butchers! We like to mingle.

Brazilians have really adopted Brent as their home, its even called Little Brazil, by some. People will travel especially to Willesden just to buy the Brazilian meat and delicacies that they cant find elsewhere in London. And the Brazilian community has integrated well into Brent; our cafes, hairdressers and boutiques have visits from all different kinds of people.

I would encourage everyone to come along and have a look at whats going on at this exhibition. It is very much a collaborative project, which will grow from peoples input. There will be a chance to try dance, music, listen to stories, attend a family workshop and even puppetry. Everyone is welcome and we really hope to see many people taking part, getting to know the people they live and work with.

Brazil to Brent is being developed by Brents Heritage team in collaboration with Battersea Arts Centre and Brazilian artist Julia Evangelista, from Seethrough Theatre.
