Vivid, luminous images produced by adults working through mental health problems with the help of an international photographic artist will go on display at Willesden Green Library Centre 5 to 29 June.

The art was developed during workshops staged by artist Tine Bech as part of the LightTAG project.

Participants used digital cameras and LED lights to explore their own creativity and produce art inspired by movement, connection and things that make them happy.

Brent Council worked with Waterman’s arts organisation, the Central and North West

and Arts in Health to deliver the workshops.

Harlesden-based social enterprise Mahogany Carnival Arts is delighting spectators with its exotic costumes during The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

And now the colour and vibrancy of carnival is also lighting up Brent Museum’s Community Gallery at Willesden Green

Making light of art

New council leader Councillor Muhammed Butt was confirmed as the new council leader at the AGM on Wednesday 16 May.

Councillor Ruth Moher was confirmed as deputy.Two new councillors have also been elected to Brent Council in the local by-elections.

Alison Hopkins (Lib Dem) has been elected to the Dollis Hill ward and Michael Pavey won the Barnhill by-election. They replaced Cllr Alex Castle and Cllr Judith Beckman respectively.

Kilburn Library is getting a major upgrade this summer, with a new, bigger children’s library.

As well as the library being totally redecorated and refurbished, there will also be £25,000 worth of new books, new heating and lighting, more computers, improved study

onto cushions and upholstery for the new look. Local residents were involved in the design process at a consultation workshop.

Celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a party at Barham Park on 5 June - everyone is invited!

The party, organised by

Now is the season for gardeners and the green-fingered to take up their trowels and sharpen their secateurs - Brent in Bloom is back.

Brent Council’s annual competition to applaud amateur gardeners and raise awareness about our local environment is open for entries until 22 June.

Anyone can enter under an array of categories: window box,

hanging baskets, allotment or display in a front garden. There are also categories for schools and for neighbourhoods.

Results will be announced in July. Winners will get certifi-cates and gardening vouchers. Brent in Bloom is part-spon-sored by the Greenhouse Gar-den Centre, Birchen Grove.

Local people in the Crick-lewood area came together to brush up the Broadway.

Volunteers from the Cricklewood Improvement Programme organised the clean-up and local police,

council officers, Hampstead School pupils and offenders carrying out Community Payback all lent a hand.

The event was organised after traders and local people suggested tackling litter.

Sitcom casts worldwide web

A Wembley man who made his own web sitcom has won an international award.

Samuell Benta, 25, wrote, directed, acted in and produced All About the McKenzies, which scooped the Great Ensemble Cast for a Comedy award at the Los Angeles web festival 2012.

Samuell, who has acted on many shows in the UK, most recently Eastenders E20, said: “It’s a real achievement. I made the show with no money, went out to LA on my own and won the award. It’s a very rewarding and empowering experience.”

He plays a young dad who aspires to be a Hollywood superstar but is hampered by an ex-girlfriend who denies him access to their child and his ‘unlikely’ family with their own dramas. He describes the show as a ‘black family sitcom.’

He said: “This will be an international TV show worldwide and will take the world by storm. Believe that!”

School staff and children lent a helping hand with the construction of the new Village School during a visit to the building site.

Brent Council is rebuilding The Village School in a £29 million project which will be completed in summer 2013.

Kay Johnson, Head of The Village School, said: “We are all so excited to see the progress being made in building our new

school - we can’t wait to move in. “The new school will be

excellent and modern with specially-adapted facilities and will help transform the quality of our pupils’ lives.

“It will help us provide the best possible care, education and opportunities to children who are among the most vulnerable.”

The school, which has pupils aged from two to 19 with complex learning diffi culties and disabilities, is being rebuilt by the Leadbitter Group.

Freedom of the boroughArtistic director Nicolas Kent has been awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough for his exemplary service to performing arts in Brent.

Director of The Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn for 28 years, he was conferred with the honour at the AGM on Wednesday 16 May. He has become the fi rst person to be given the award since Brent Council was founded in 1965.

Become a sporting heroThe hunt is on for local people who make sport happen for friends, neighbours or colleagues – or want to.

Sport Makers will help provide skills and opportunities for people who organise, or want to organise, sports or volunteer for clubs or events.

Tennis is served up With Wimbledon only weeks away, the opportunity has arrived for you to get a slice of on-court action.

Brent Council is running six-week tennis courses in local parks for just over £3 per week starting from 16 June. There are also courses for adults, children, beginners and improvers and cardio-tennis.

Pupils really dig new school


When did you fi rst become a fan of the royal family?

I remember the King dying when I was eight and it was just as though somebody in my family had died, my granddad or something like that because my parents were great royalists.

The Queen’s Coronation after that was obviously a much happier occasion and I remember it really well. I loved her dress and the six girls who accompanied her and held her cloak. People kept buying me books about it which I just read and re-read and from that moment on I was just hooked really.

How long have you lived in Brent?

I’ve lived in Brent since 1967, but I’ve been 32 years in this house. I love it here; you can get down the west end in 40 minutes.

Are you excited about the Jubilee?

Oh yes, I am, it’s going to be a fantastic week. I just hope the weather holds. Of course it rained for the Queen’s Coronation but there were still millions of people who came down to watch it but I was too young to come to London then.

When did you start collecting and what was the fi rst royal souvenir you bought?

My children put me down to help out at a jumble sale once and there was this little glass dish with the Queen on it that I bought for two and a half pence and that really was the start of it.

It’s grown and grown because so many things have happened since then; you had the engagement and wedding of Charles and Diana, then you had Andrew and Fergie’s wedding. I actually named my oldest son after Andrew.

Have you met many members of the royal family?

I met Diana six weeks before she died when she came to open a children’s ward at Northwick Park Hospital. I was wearing a rosette with her photograph on and she threw back her head and laughed and said “Oh, you have got it bad.”

I met Prince Andrew once when I was giving some fl owers to the Queen Mother at her birthday picnic at Clarence House and Prince Charles at Sandringham Flower Show, he liked the rosette too and I said “that’s in honour of your lovely grandmother.”

How are you going to celebrate the Jubilee?

I’m going to go to everything I can really. I want to see the boats on the Thames to watch the pageant and I’ll go to the Brent celebrations too, it sounds nice.

You’re a bit of a Brent celeb; tell us about your media appearances.

Well I’ve got Anneka Rice coming next week to interview me for a show with Rolf Harris at the end of May.

I was on Alan Titchmarsh’s show last year; I’m a great fan of his. I’ve done two interviews for Japanese telly this year, been featured in a Hong Kong magazine and I did a thing for the Learning Channel in America last year. I was doing up to seven interviews a day just before William and Kate’s wedding.

Kenton resident Margaret Tyler is so hooked on the Queen her house is full of royal memorabilia. Her amazing collection’s turned Margaret into a celebrity in her own right in places as far and wide as Russia, Japan and the US.

Community ChampionsAs London prepares to celebrate the best athletes this summer, Brent honours its own exceptional champions.

Presented at Brent Council’s Annual Meeting and Mayor making ceremony in May, this years’ Community Champions Awards recognised the work and effort of 18 local people who give up their time to support people or make a difference in the borough.

This includes, Jayant Patel who, after 27 years, can still be found at the studio recording Kiran, an audio newspaper for Brent’s Gujarati speakers with visual impairments.

Or Dzevad Dizdarevic, described as an invaluable resource to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Centre. He has saved the centre £45,000 by refurbishing their buildings free of charge over the last 15 years. He also volunteers a few times a week helping elderly and disabled members with their shopping, picking up prescriptions and setting up satellite and cable boxes so they can watch TV in their own language.

Another winner was 18 year-old Shawna-Lee Lewin who volunteers every week at a care home for older people, helping residents to take part in quizzes and board games. She also mentors at her school helping her peers who are underachieving and younger pupils, who get into trouble for their behaviour.

Outgoing Mayor, Councillor Aslam Choudry, said: “It was a privilege for me to hand out these awards as my last duty as Mayor of Brent.

“I have met many residents across the borough in the last year who have given their own time to help others. What has impressed me is not just their commitment to their activities, but their values in being so enthusiastic to their voluntary work.”

Chief Executive of Brent Council, Gareth Daniel, said: “These awards are an important part of celebrating those residents who have made a difference to the lives of others in Brent, and recognise their efforts to improve the quality of life for others. Each of them are role models for their selfl essness and dedication to the work they do and they should rightly be praised.”

Get your party hats on because the summer of 2012 is set to be one to remember. With a raft of celebrations to get the community together, showcase local talent and get everyone’s feet tapping, this summer promises to be anything but a washout. Words by SHARON DONOVAN.

To kick off our inclusive ‘Brent Celebrates’ theme on 3 June, the council in partnership with Wembley City, has organised the Queen of all street parties at Wembley Arena Square.

‘Brent Celebrates the Diamond Jubilee’ will feature 50s themed entertainment including local brass bands, a swing style dance show, big screens streaming live coverage of the Thames pageant and vintage footage of the coronation and silver jubilee.

After the Diamond Jubilee, our attention will turn to the fast approaching London 2012 Games with a number of special events to get residents in the Olympic spirit.

Brent Celebrates the FlameWednesday 25 July

Making it’s journey from the Ancient Olympic site in Greece, the Olympic Flame will pass through Wembley for two hours on Wednesday 25 July.

Be a part of history and line the streets to witness this historic occasion

and cheer on Brent’s inspirational torchbearers.

Afterwards, you can carry on the fun with our ‘Brent Celebrates the Flame’ event at King Edward VII Park in Wembley from 12noon -7.30pm.

Expect live music, live-as-it-happens coverage of the London 2012 Torch

Relay and dance performances and workshops.

Brent Dance MonthThroughout July

As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the borough will provide a month of dance to include performances, events, classes and workshops ranging from Kathak and Nigerian Tango, to Hip Hop and cheerleading.

If you are a young person or school dance group you can enter the Brent Dance Blast competition, on Friday 13 July at Granville Plus Youth Arts Centre in South Kilburn. Prizes include a professional development session with Daniel Jones, Dance Soloist with English National Ballet.

Over 50s can get involved with tea dances or dance and movement classes at a number of locations.

Stadium Full of Dreams exhibitionBetween 2 July – 26 August there will be a free outdoor exhibition on the 1948 Olympics at Wembley Central Square.

The 1948 Games, often referred to as the Austerity Olympics because of the economic climate and post war rationing, were held in Wembley over 50 years ago.

This exhibition will include portraits of 1948 Team GB Olympians, local residents with memories of the Austerity Olympics, and young people from Brent inspired by past and present Games.

It will be accompanied by an online exhibition, to include objects and documents relating to the 1948 Olympics from Brent Museum and Brent Archives’ collections.

Brent Celebrates a Golden SummerSunday 9 September

Taking place on the day of the offi cial Paralympic Closing Ceremony, this celebration in Gladstone Park will be part of the nationwide ‘Bandstand Marathon’. The marathon will see over 500 events in bandstands and other spaces happening across the UK.

The festival, from 12noon - 7.30pm will include big screens streaming live footage from the offi cial closing ceremony, sporting activities, a funfair, food and craft stalls.

Portraits from 1948 exhibition


It’s been a hive of activity with builders, cranes and scaffolding moving in to develop a 85 acre plot of land in Brent that is expected to turn the borough into a daily visitors’ attraction.

With a designer outlet, shops, bars and a nine

screen cinema being built alongside the world

famous Wembley Stadium, tourists are expected

to fl ock to the area in their thousands, but lucky

locals get to soak up the atmosphere every day.

Wembley City, when fi nished, will be a mix

of everyday shopping, leisure attractions and

event venues with over 5,500 homes and more

exciting additions being delivered over the

coming years.

The regeneration in Wembley is also creating

jobs. It is estimated that around 2,000 construction

jobs will be created over the full development

period and many of these are available to skilled

and unskilled people living in the borough.

The Wembley Works offi ce has been

established between the College of North West

London, Brent Council and developers Quintain.

it will give training and provide access to local

people to construction jobs and to the 8,400

on-going retail, leisure and offi ce jobs that will

come forward in the completed development.

1 The Iconic Wembley Arena is in the heart of

Wembley City and after an extensive

refurbishment in 2006 it continues to be one

of the UK’s leading entertainment venues.

2 Located in front of Wembley Arena is Arena

with light and an ideal place to have a quick

bite, drink or simply to relax before a concert

or sporting event. With an interactive

fountain, giant screen and light display there

fantastic views.

5 Apt Student Living opens this September and

will be home to up to 660 students.

6 London Designer Outlet will be the fi rst

designer outlet centre within the M25. It

will have 85 shops, anchored by Gap and

Cycle on It’s June, it’s Bike Week and this year there is something for cyclists of all abilities as Brent saddles up for a celebration of cycling from 16 to 24 June.

Brent Council has teamed up with British Cycling and Sky to stage guided rides around Brent starting from 17 June as part of the national Sky Ride programme.

As well as beginners, the rides are aimed at cyclists who have got out of the habit and need to rebuild their confi dence. They are suitable for children and adults and all you need is your own bicycle and cycle helmet.

and staff at its store in Drury Way, Brent Park, Wembley, from 10am to 4pm.

The training is part of its Green Travel Day for staff and customers and will promote all forms of sustainable travel.

Anyone interested in cycling can use ‘have a go’ bikes, pick up cycling information or get their own bike checked out by Dr Bike.

Brent Cyclists is running a scenic bike tour on 23 June, starting at 11am outside Kingsbury Station - all are welcome. The ride is about 15 miles and will fi nish at 4.30pm near the start point. It takes in Roe Green Village, Kingsbury Old Church, the Welsh Harp, Gladstone Park, Roundwood Park, the River Brent, and Fryent Country Park.

If you live, work or study in Brent you can also get two hours of professional cycling lessons for only £5 (or free if unemployed or over 65). The lessons, which are open all year round, can help complete beginners to learn to cycle for the fi rst time, family groups, and commuters to build up their confi dence to cycle to work safely.

Jiten Shah, who lives in Kenton, has recently taken up cycling again. “Some friends of mine reintroduced me to cycling a few years ago.” he said. “I always cycled when I was a child but I stopped as a teenager. It feels great now to be back on a bike.”

Jiten took part in the Big Ride recently with a group from Brent Cyclists who cycled into central London. “Now I’m out on my bike every day! It’s great for getting around because you don’t have to use buses or a car; it’s good for your health and great fun,” he added.

2 Put your food waste in the caddy. You can put in all food waste such as vegetables, fruit, cooked and uncooked leftovers, tea bags, coffee grinds, pasta, everything!

3 When the caddy liner is full, remove it from the caddy and put it in your kerbside container or green wheeled bin.

4 Start again with a new caddy liner. The council will soon give you information on what to do when you run out of caddy liners.

Compost food and garden wasteIf you have a home composter you can produce your own home-grown compost to spread on your garden rather than put food waste in your kitchen caddy or kerbside container.

Home composting is great for the garden. It improves nutrient levels in the soil; creates better soil structure, preventing erosion. It helps the soil to hold water – vital in hot summer months – and saves the cost of buying commercially produced compost. All you need to do is put your organic waste in your composter and wait for six to nine months.

paves the way for new skyline in BrentResidents of South Kilburn should fi nd out this month if two tower blocks that have penetrated the skyline for over 40 years will come down.

Residents could soon be enjoying a new view from their window if the plans, which involve knocking down two 18 storey blocks and building 229 new fl ats and maisonettes - less than half the height of the original building - get agreed.

The new homes will be between six and seven storeys in height and are part of phase two of the South Kilburn Regeneration Programme.

Brent recently made a planning application to demolish Bronte House and Fielding House to make way for the new homes, 103 of which will be allocated to South Kilburn tenants.

The development will also include a grand courtyard for residents and a new public square on Kilburn Park Road.

Andy Donald Director of Regeneration and Major Projects said: “We’ve worked closely with residents on these proposals and they are just as eager as us to make progress with these plans.

“They have been living on the estate while many of their neighbours have been moved into their new homes as part of earlier phases of regeneration.

“Now it’s almost their turn, and with such fantastic designs for the new homes and the surrounding area it’s not diffi cult to see why. Brent is really pleased that we have been able to continue addressing the need for housing despite the fi nancial climate.”

If the plans get the go ahead the development will form another integral piece to the South Kilburn Masterplan which is transforming the area by providing new homes, local shops and services and new or improved public open spaces.

The new homes have been designed by a joint team of award winning architects Alison Brooks Architects and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands Architects.

The decision on the planning application is expected to be made this month and if it gets the go ahead demolition will be towards the end of 2013.

Mr party plannerAt the centre of any successful celebration is the person who oversees the planning, like traffic manager Paul Richards, who has been busy behind the scenes organising road closures for street parties celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee.

Paul was key to many of last year’s celebrations for the Royal Wedding and is once again pulling out his clipboard and his trusty list of contacts to help residents mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“I think the Royal Wedding really caught people’s imagination,” says Paul. “The interest in having a street party has increased this time around and we’ve had a third more applications.”

As his job title might suggest, Paul is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of traffic throughout the borough, including traffic management for Wembley Stadium events and coordinating road works being carried out by utility companies and the council.

Paul also deals with approved applications for street parties, it’s Paul’s job to write all the traffic management plans that show which part of a street will be closed and any diversions that will need to be in place.

Using this plan Paul then works with the safer streets and traffic order teams to put the road closures in place.

“The safer street team supply equipment such as road signs and cones to close the roads, while the traffic order team write the legal documents for the closure and a notice that goes into the local newspapers.

“A traffic order allows us to impose traffic and parking restrictions and for the Jubilee street parties we issued temporary orders to close off roads.

“Normally we charge £1,275+vat to close a street but on this special occasion we have waived the fee.

“Brent wanted to make it easy for residents to organise street parties for the Queen’s Jubilee and so joined many other local authorities by agreeing to meet the costs of traffic orders.

“We are also covering the first £300 of any traffic management such as putting in

place signs and barriers to close a road.”Street parties are taking place across

Brent from Saturday 2 to Tuesday 5 June, so when you’re tucking into a tasty Jubilee lunch why not toast Paul for your car-free street.

Party like it’s 1953

Brent will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday 3 June. Part of the festivities will be a look back 60 years to how we celebrated the coronation.

With the community coming together to share food, enjoy performances and sports demonstrations, Brent’s celebrations will have a lot in common with the local events that took place to celebrate the Queen’s coronation in 1953, the year after she came to the throne.

A fascinating visual record of the ‘Coronation Celebrations’ is held at Brent Archives, in the form of a fi lm made by Wembley Borough Council, a predecessor of Brent.

The silent fi lm, compiled from footage of events held across the borough, looks an amateur affair in these days of HD and 3D fi lms but the nostalgic crackly black-and-white footage cut together with sections

in colour is a delightful record of the local area six decades ago. You can watch the fi lm on a big screen at a series of Jubilee events across London, as well as at Brent’s own celebrations.

The fi lm documents the civic events that took place for the coronation, from a thanksgiving service, to the new commemorative benches presented to every ward of the borough and ‘beacon bonfi res’, part of a series lit across the UK.

The lighter side of the celebrations is also recorded, with footage of street parties, the ‘Miss Wembley’ beauty contest; and the unusual spectacle of a school cricket match in fancy dress, with an Abraham Lincoln lookalike batting!

You can also view the winning entries in the best decorated shop and house competitions and the coronation competitions organised by local sports clubs as well as the celebrations of the older residents at the Eventide Home.

Come and enjoy the screening at Brent’s Jubilee celebration on 3 June and play your part in this historical occasion.

You can also see a Jubilee quilt currently being created by members of the Elders Voice charity in partnership with Brent Museum.
