The Brazilian Elodea is a aquatic plant that is invading the Great Lakes. It is a green waterweed with white flowers can spread up to 100 acres and can grow up to 6 feet long.

How: People brought it over as an aquarium plant, and it came in ballast water.

Why: The Brazilian Elodea was brought into the U.S because it was good at turning carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Why Is It Harmful?

Natural Impact: It’s harmful because it crowds out other organisms , the ones that were originally here.

Economic Impact :Another reason the Brazilian Elodea is bad to have around is that you can’t boat, fish, or swim with it in the water.

What Is Being Done About It?

People cover it with cloth to keep out the light. Cutting it up doesn’t work.
