One person can melodize, but it takes a group to form a chorus. The leaders of 11 Capital region chambers of commerce were singing in harmony on June 21st as they delivered a message to our elected leaders that the business community is teaming up to make our collective home a better place. We met with local Senate and House delegations, discussing issues related to Albany airport, rail transportation, energy costs, and workforce development. Strong transportation systems are vital to any robust economy. People need to move around easily, and raw materials and finished goods must be delivered on time. Albany International Airport is an excellent facility, but more flights will make a big difference in promoting commerce in the region. Many travelers find it necessary to connect through other big city airports and then fly or drive to Albany from there. The demands of business require easier access to air transportation. Now what about rail travel? Can passenger rail service be improved to better serve the changing needs of our business commuters? New York City and the Boston-to-D.C. Northeast Corridor offers some of the most advanced train technology in the nation to move people in an efficient manner sometimes surpassing that of air travel. But what about points to the north? In the major corridor of the state often referred to as Tech Valley, where companies such as IBM in Poughkeepsie, GE in Schenectady, Momentive in Waterford, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES in Malta are developing new products for today’s economy, rail service is spotty or nonexistent, with frequent interruptions, delays, and problems due to maintenance issues, limited available tracks and antiquated equipment. Higher speed, more reliable train service is vitally important to the growing number of people who choose it as their method of travel to this region. Regarding energy, it costs significantly more per kilowatt hour to transmit electricity to our region as opposed to elsewhere in the state. Studies have suggested that with the influx of businesses into this region we might actually face an energy shortage in a few years unless something is done to either build new plants or find better ways to transmit energy here. Time is not on our side - we need to effect positive change quickly enough to help our economy grow. As the economy improves, we need a well trained workforce. Hudson Valley Community College President Andrew Matonak advises that our learning institutions need to turn out “well-rounded students” adaptable to changing workforce needs. Therefore business and education leaders must work together to ensure the skills of the applicants fit the available jobs. The dialogue on these points must continue. Let’s strive towards meeting these challenges, and fueling the engine of regional economic progress. —Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County As seen in The Community News on July 8, 2011 • Are you a senior management leader within your organization looking for the opportunity to build quality relationships with other key business, civic and cultural leaders in our area? • If the answer is yes, turn to page 9 for full details and an application for The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Executive Institute ~ A Chamber program of distinction.
