Custer State Park is filled with a wide variety of wildlife including a herd of 1,500 bison, pronghorn antelope, elk and mountain goats to list just a few. In 1874 George Custer led an expedition into present-day Custer, SD and announced the discovery of gold, triggering the Black Hills Gold Rush. And it was here, 2 years later that General George Custer lead the 7th Cavalry to “corral” all remaining free Plains Indians, retaking possession of the Black Hills, and thus the gold deposits. Meanwhile, Sitting Bull had called together the largest ever gathering of Plains Indian at Little Big Horn to discuss what to do about the whites and it was at this united encampment of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians, that the 7th Calvary met at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
