Rooms are adorned with a touch of the west, the right amount of luxury, and walk-in showers marked by the brands of Roosevelt. If 1880s nostalgia is your thing, ask for one of our historic rooms where it’s rumored the President himself may have delivered a speech.

If you get hungry, sneak downstairs to the best dining in the west at Theodore’s Dining Room. We’d recommend pairing your dinner with a signature cocktail or excellent wine before turning in for the night.

Marquis de Mores

Medora was founded in 1883 by the 24-year-old French nobleman, the Marquis de Mores. He named the town for his bride, the former Medora Von Hoffman, daughter of a wealthy New York City banker.

With financial backing from his father-in-law, the Marquis founded the town and built a beef-packing plant, hotel, several stores and the Chateau de Mores, their summer home. All of his various enterprises ended in financial failure by the fall of 1886. With their son and daughter, the Marquis and Marquise returned to France, where another son was born. The Marquis was killed by native tribesmen in the Sahara Desert in Africa in 1896. Medora never remarried and died in France in 1921.

Theodore Roosevelt

Roosevelt arrived in Medora for a buffalo hunt in September 1883 and immediately fell in love with the land. He invested in cattle and soon operated two large ranches, the Maltese Cross and the Elkhorn.

At age 42, he became the youngest president in U.S. history, serving until 1909. The Badlands shaped Roosevelt’s philosophy toward conservation. When he first came to Medora to hunt, the bison were nearly extinct, having been decimated by hide hunters and disease. After spending time here, he became alarmed by the damage that was being done to the land and its wildlife. When he became president in 1901, Roosevelt pursued his interests in conservation. He established five national parks, 51 federal bird reservations, four national game preserves and 150 national forests. By the end of his presidency, he had protected 230,000,000 acres of public land.

According to Roosevelt, “I have always said I would not have been president had it not been for my experience in North Dakota.”

Hear about Roosevelt’s time in the Badlands from The Colonel himself in the live presentation, A Teddy Roosevelt Salute to Medora!

Harold and Sheila Schafer

Harold Schafer was a businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.

Schafer rose to national acclaim as the original maker of Glass Wax, Snowy Bleach and, perhaps most popular of all, Mr. Bubble bubble bath. He was a classic “rags to riches” story and Horatio Alger winner alongside the likes of Herbert Hoover and J.C. Penney, whose personal friends were among the world’s rich and famous, but whose heart was always with his home in North Dakota — especially Medora.

Schafer purchased the Rough Riders Hotel and Ferris Store in 1962 and began rebuilding them. Other renovations and improvements followed and, in 1965, the Medora Division of Schafer’s Gold Seal Company was opened to the public — its star

attraction, the Medora Musical! When the Gold Seal Company was sold in 1986, the family donated the Medora assets to the newly formed Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.

A very large number of people have worked to make Medora what it is today, but clearly, it all began when Schafer’s crew took the Rough Riders Hotel apart, board by board, and then painstakingly reassembled it.

Harold Schafer was a unique blend of flamboyance and humility, a successful businessman who, alongside his wife, Sheila, and his family, was much more interested in giving than in accumulating wealth. Learn more about this wonderful man in our brand new show, Wonderful WORK: The Harold Schafer Story.

How We Continue His Legacy

President Theodore Roosevelt was a practical conservationist. Today, we strive to follow his lead. To help celebrate the National Park Service that he helped shape so significantly, we’ve reignited our efforts to help ensure that our children, and children’s children, can enjoy our nation’s natural wonders, too.

That’s why, among other efforts, this guide has been printed with FSC®-certified post-consumer recycled paper. We believe President Roosevelt would say, “Bully!” to the balanced effort.

Conservation means development as much as it does protection. I recognize the right and duty of this generation to develop and use the natural resources of our land; but I do not recognize the right to waste them, or to rob, by wasteful use, the generations that come after us. — Theodore Roosevelt, 1910
