Dear Members,We hope you have enjoyed the holidays and are ready to start the New Year. The years seem to keep going by faster and faster and it is hard to believe it is 2013! I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Members a great year.

At the Annual Meeting held on December 14, the Membership elected five new Board Members. Scott Maxwell, Bill Wade, Diane Bullock, Ken Oberg and Diana George. These five are joining Dennis Visich, Mike Mancusi and Brian Hayden. Dave DeBruyne and Mike Maraghy will be leaving the Board and we would like to thank them for having devoted a great deal of time and energy serving our membership during their tenure. We are sincerely grateful for all they have contributed to the Club over these past several years.

The new Board will announce the Committees for 2013 following their first Board meeting scheduled for January 25, 2013. The Committees are Architectural Review Board, Buildings & Grounds, Finance, House & Social, Golf & Greens, Governance & Governmental Affairs, Nominating, Long-Range Planning and Marketing & Membership. If you are interested in serving on one of our Committees, please contact me at 843.815.8488 or [email protected]. Your participation would be greatly appreciated.

2013 promises to be an exciting year filled with opportunities for you, our Members, to enjoy Berkeley Hall. Check the calendar and mark your dates to visit with friends and family – to start your year off coming to our specialty golf clinics held by Andrew and Krista, tennis round-robins – and definitely plan on attending the Berkeley Hall International Night Dinner on January 26 – a celebration of our staff that represents countries and cultures from around the globe.

Please share this phenomenal club with your guests! Our current guest policy allows you as a member to sponsor your friends, family, business associates and other acquaintances to come and enjoy our amenities and facilities even when you are not able to come along. We have several packages that may be attractive to your guests regarding cottage stays, golf rates and meeting space incentives. Call our Concierge at 843.815.8494 for details. Lastly, a great article is inside this month’s Experience written by Bob Ring, Director of Member Services and Marketing, discussing the Champion Bermudagrass Greens coming to the North Course in 2013. Last fall, the Board of Directors, acting on recommendations from the USGA and our Golf & Greens Committee voted to convert our Bentgrass putting greens on the North Course to the Champion Bermudagrass. Danny Malone, Superintendent of North and South Course will begin the conversion mid-year.

In closing, the entire Staff at Berkeley Hall would like to express their appreciation for your contribution to the 2012 Holiday Fund. Best wishes for a prosperous New Year!

Kindest Regards,

General Manager & Chief Operating Officer

Berkeley Hall was once again chosen as the preferred site to host the 2012 Concours d’Elegance Driving Tour Luncheon for their Sponsors and Exhibitors. The honored Marquee at this year’s exhibition was the Ford Motel T, which included Brass Era, Classic, Sports and Micro Cars. They celebrated these American-made vehicles in 10 different classes - from the Ford Model T 1909-1915 and Ford Model T 1916-1922, to the American Classics, American Performance and Production Modern Class of 1949-1972. Members enjoyed a private showing of these antique and collectible automobiles that were later on display at the exhibition. The vehicles were positioned along the Grand Mall of the clubhouse for close inspection.

Once again to all of the Members and Staff of Berkeley Hall who so generously donated Christmas gifts that were distributed to needy children throughout Beaufort County on Christmas Day. This was the Club’s 10th Annual CAPA Christmas Luncheon. Susan Cato, Executive Director of the Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA) was in attendance to collect wrapped holiday gifts for a child who might otherwise go without. Members were quickly drawn into the spirit of the holidays as the luncheon opened with traditional Christmas songs sung by children from the May River Montessori School, under the watchful eye of Member Carol Sweet and Lisa Thompson whose children attend the school.

Report from the Architectural Review Boardby Wendy Wagner, ARB AdministratorNew home construction in 2012 continued to be very busy and the pace of activity is expected to continue in 2013. Fifteen (15) homes are presently under construction and

plans for another eight (8) homes are being reviewed for approval to begin work. We have six (6) different builders involved with the construction of these properties. During the year, we had eight (8) homes completed, thirteen (13) new starts and nine (9) additional new homes submitted for ARB approval. Currently, there are 258 completed homes, which represent 47% build out of the community.

The ARB welcomes Members to stop by to ask questions or take a look at current development. In addition to overseeing new home construction or renovations, the ARB office is also responsible for approving tree removals, recommending removal of dead, diseased or damaged trees from unimproved lots, responsible for lot signs and mailboxes, enforcing the Restrictive Covenants and ARB Standards and providing information on the use and restrictions in wetlands. Please contact the ARB if your mailbox post needs a fresh coat of paint or you need a replacement mailbox or new lettering.

If you have questions or concerns or would like to bring a matter to the attention of the ARB office, please do not hesitate to call or email me at [email protected]. I’ll be happy to investigate the matter or assist you in resolving any questions you may have regarding your own property.

Attending a Lowcoun-try Oyster Roast is a ritual in the winter for any true southerner - whether you are a native or transplant. Have you ever consid-ered how the oysters get from the marsh to the shuckin’ table?

Coastal Carolinians have been harvesting oysters for thousands of years. Ancient Shell Middens, found along backwater creeks, are evidence of Native Americans’ appetite for the saltmarsh delicacy. South-ern planters considered serving oysters – prepared in myriad ways - the only way to impress northern visitors. It’s said that Czar Nicholas insisted on being served Carolina oysters during his reign.

This year, the season began in mid- September and will run through April. Local watermen, clad in heavy boots and thick gloves, take their bateaus or skiffs up into the oyster beds between mid and low tide. Using a mallet or oyster rake, large clumps of the gray and craggy filter feeding bivalve are broken off. Back at the dock, the harvest is rinsed then divided into those to

be shucked, and those that will end up at your oyster roast.

People are not the only oyster gourmands. The clustered colonies collect plankton and detritus, making it one of the richest animal

communities in the Saltmarsh. Sheeps-head Fish crush the shells with their strong beaks. Small spiral shaped Oyster Drills tunnel into the shell to suck out the contents. Boring Sponges wraps around the shell, riddling it with dozens of small holes. And, the Oyster Catcher uses its long, narrow and sharp ended orange bill to pry the bivalve apart revealing the sumptuous treat inside.

Oysters are only as good as the water in which they grow. It is imperative that we protect and maintain our pristine estuarine environment to ensure the quality of our oysters. We invite you to tour the Okatie River and observe the impressive oyster beds, with Eric Burns our Master Captain and Certified Naturalist with Marshgrass Adventures. Please remember to bring along your binoculars!

Our tidal estuaries are becoming more and more an ecological gem. Plants and animals co-exist in this tightly knit circle of life driving a pulse that can only be fully appreciated by taking part in observing its grandeur. The Okatie not only is full of local history but is also a spectacular example of the tidal marsh ecology. Protected Wood Storks, Royal Terns, and Oyster Catchers are just a few of the birds you can expect to see so bring your binoculars and telephoto lenses.

The diversity of the tidal marsh ecology is dependent on conservationefforts. These efforts require conscious participation in order to understand the com-plexities of the life cycle. Outings are a great way to unite family with nature in a relaxed, controlled environment while entertaining and educating. The River Park invites you to many opportunities to discover this gem for yourself.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart - he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season’s first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next

morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.

This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them. ~ Amazon.com

Monday, February 4 @ 3pm, Ladies Locker Room You Are the Love of My Life by Susan Shreve

It is 1973 and Watergate is on everyone’s lips. Lucy Painter is a children’s book illustrator and a single mother of two. She leaves New York and the married father of her children to live in a tightly knit Washington neighborhood in the house where she grew up and where she discovered her father’s suicide. Lucy hopes for a fresh start, but her life is

full of secrets: her children know nothing of her father’s death or the identity of their own father. As the new neighbors enter their insular lives, her family’s safety and stability become threatened. You Are the Love of My Life is a story of how shame leads to secrets, secrets to lies, and how lies stand in the way of human connection. ~ Amazon.com

Bill Beagan’s rise from the ranks in the Canadian Army Apprentice Program to the boardrooms of power in the world of hockey is a real life “rags to riches” story. As a former NHL referee and com-missioner of the International hockey league (IHL), his career crossed paths with so many interesting characters and as such, he has many entertaining and personal recollections that are contained in his biography entitled: Shooting for the Moon: The Bill Beagan Story. Bobby Orr, perhaps the greatest hockey player of all time, provided the for-

ward for this book. It features documents, letters and pictures illustrating the inner workings of a professional sports league.

As Commissioner of the IHL, he became friends with some of the most famous names in the history of world hockey. Men like legendary president of the NHL, Clarence Campbell, his successor, John Ziegler Jr.; Bruce Norris the controversial owner of the Detroit Red Wings, Bill Wirtz, the eccentric owner of the Chicago Black Hawks; the ever flamboyant Toronto Maple Leafs owner Harold Ballard and many others in the world’s hockey fraternity referred to him as a business partner, friend and even respected foe. Whether you are a hockey fan or not you will enjoy hearing the stories of his determination to overcome the odds to live his dream.

For reservations, please call the Concierge at 843.815.8423 or email [email protected]. The meeting begins at 8am with breakfast and concludes at 9:15am. The cost is $9pp and all Members and their guests are welcome to attend.

Handicap System Conversion to GHINThe Carolinas Golf Association is in the process of converting our handicap software from Golfnet to GHIN. The GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network) is a product of the USGA and is the premiere handicap software in the United States. Today, GHIN is used in 44 states, 77 golf associations, 14,500 golf clubs and by 2.5 million golfers.

The GHIN Handicap Program software effectively manages score posting; Handicap Index calculations; exceptional tournament score reduction; allows access to all Course Ratings and Slope Ratings contained in the association wide database; performs golfer Handicap Index and score inquires; networks all golf club members on the GHIN service and much more. The Handicap Committee will also begin utilizing the online ForeTees module for checking the scores posted to the tee sheet record of rounds played.

It provides for scores to be electronically routed from any club within the GHIN network. Away scores are re-routed to the home clubs. Clubs have access to the USGA Handicap indexes of all other two million golfers on GHIN across the country. Clubs may inquire about the USGA Handicap Index of any visiting golfer on GHIN. Each golfer can see the immediate impact that each new score may have on the individuals Handicap Index at the next revision via the trend.

Jake Higginbottom, a 19-year old amateur from New South Wales who tied for 20th in this year’s Players Amateur (+2) recently won the BMW NZ Open at the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch, Australia. This tournament dates back to 1907 and is New Zealand’s PGA National Championship. He becomes the first amateur player to win the event since Harry Berwick won the title in 1956. Past champions include notable PGA Tour Players such as Niclas Fasth, Michael Campbell, Corey Pavin, Ian Baker-Finch, Bob Gilder, Peter Thompson, Bob Charles and Bruce Devlin.

Another top world amateur from Australia who played in last year’s Players Amateur was 18-year old Oliver Goss, who claimed victory over PGA Tour Professionals at the WA Open Champion-ship played at Royal Perth Golf Club. Goss becomes the first amateur since Stephen Leaney in 1991 to win the WA Open Championship and the first since Danny Lee in 2009, to win a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.

The PGA Tour of Australasia is a Professional Golf Tour whose tournaments qualify for world golf ranking points. Most players who compete on this tour are Australian, with a smaller domestic contingent from New Zealand and other countries from around the world. The highest world ranked Australian players devote most of their time to the PGA Tour or the European Tour, typically returning home several events each year. The Australasian PGA Tour has been a feeder for the larger Tours.

The Players Amateur is recognized as the premier amateur golf tournament in the country. Many of its past participants have been successful at the professional level including Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler, Kyle Stanley, Bill Haas and Camilo Villegas. Berkeley Hall works closely with the Heritage

Classic Foundation and Steve Wilmot, RBC Heritage Tournament Director to host the tournament that invites the world’s top ranked amateurs.

The Heritage Classic Foundation Donates Proceeds to Charities

The Heritage Classic Foundation has distributed $25,000 to charity from proceeds raised from the 2012 Players Amateur. Heritage Foundation Board Member Duke Delcher presented a check for $10,000 to the Bluffton Jasper Volunteers in Medicine. Another $15,000 was presented to Bluffton Self Help thanks in part to pledges made by members of the 2-Club for every 2 scored by players during the event.

Bluffton Jasper Volunteers in Medicine is a non- profit organization dedicated to providing free medical services to eligible residents of Bluffton and Jasper counties, who do not have health insurance. BJVIM offers general medical services, women’s gynecological care, nutrition care, nurse counseling, and assistance in applying for free prescription medications. Funded by donations from individuals, service organizations, communi-ty businesses, and fundraising efforts, we strive to provide quality healthcare to those who otherwise could not receive treatment.

MODERN GOLF Comes to Berkeley HallModern Golf will be coming to Berkeley Hall to do professional club fitting in the mid part of January. Each fitting will be 2 hours and the cost is $150. If you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be a Tour player and have access to the same equipment they do then this is your chance. Please inquire in the Golf Shop.

A fundamental principal of the golf swing is to return the clubface to the ball in the same position from where it started. This ensures that the clubface is square at impact and follows along the correct swing path. When clubface is square at impact the ball travels in a perfect trajectory towards your target. The question that remains, however, how can this be accomplished each and every time you swing a golf club.

A lot of similarities can be made between the motions of a hockey player taking a slap shot to that of the golf swing. That’s why many so many of them are considered terrific golfers. To get a better understanding and feel for this motion, try practicing the following drill. If you are a right handed golfer, separate your hands on the grip by place your right hand low on the shaft while keeping your left hand on the grip. Now take your swing and as you bring the club back towards to the ball you will notice several things:

•Theleadorleftarmstaysclosetoyourbody•Therighthandrotatesontopoftheclubwhichdeliversasquareclubfacetotheball.•Therightelbowisatorbehindyourrighthip.

This is the ideal position that allows the player to deliver a powerful impact on the ball – a move that is consistent with the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. It should be noted that Ben Hogan wrote in his book: Five lessons-The Modern Fundamentals of Golf that the power generated from this position made him wish he had “three right hands”.

If the right arm is your dominant side then there is no reason to try and keep it out of the swing. You just need to learn how to use it correctly. To get a better feel for how the right hand should work during the swing, hold the club with your right hand only. As you begin the downswing, slightly twist your right hand which takes the grip end of the club down and in towards your right hip. This brings the club head out in front of your body. Just be sure to keep your right arm close to your side since you never want your arms to move away from your body. The look at impact is the right elbow positioned behind your right hip. This swing will work for you every time.

GGOLF & Community MAINTENANCE

On September 28th, the Board of Directors, acting on strong recommen-dations from the United States Golf Association (USGA) and our Golf and Greens Committee voted to convert our Bentgrass putting greens on the North Course to Champion Bermudagrass. The work is scheduled to be completed during the summer of 2013. This deci-sion was based on findings from detailed studies that examined both the playability of the new putting surface as well as, the operating and capital costs associated with the decision.

From a playability standpoint, the Club’s objective is to maintain consistent, year-round quality putting sur-faces. This is the standard that players have come to expect from the “experience” of playing golf at Berkeley Hall. That being said, we have witnessed three consecutive summers of closings and/or restricted play on the North Course due to deteriorating conditions caused by excessive heat and humidity. While the Bentgrass greens show further signs of deterioration, the Bermudagrass putting surfaces on the South Course have shown steady year- over- year improvements throughout the summer and into the fall due to new and improved cultivar practices.

The Bentgrass greens on the North Course were seeded back in 2000, and the course opened in 2001. It was known at that time that the greens would need to be reseeded in 2014. Therefore the time had arrived where a decision had to be made to either reinstall the Bentgrass or replace the existing grass with another quality putting surface. For the past year, there have been studies examined and issues discussed at both the Committee and Board level that considered playability as well as, capital investment and maintenance expense to arrive at their decision. For example: 1.) The Club would be required to purchase new hydraulic cooling equipment to maintain a new Bentgrass putting surface. Not only would this be extremely costly, but considering our southern climate, there would be no guarantee that the new greens could be maintained at an acceptable level over the long-term. 2.) The decision would eliminate the need to position Turfbreeze fans during the summer months adjacent to the greens to circulate the air flow. These fans had been scheduled to be replaced over the next 5-years at a cost of nearly $150K dollars. There will be no further requirement for these noisy and unsightly fans to be used during the summer months 3.) The maintenance staff would be able to devote more of their attention to detailing the course rather than being preoccupied every summer with “babysitting” the Bentgrass, which frequently required the scheduling of syringing of

greens throughout the day in order to cool the leaf blades. These were part of the reasons that the decision will result in overall cost savings in both the operating and capital budget. The Board concluded that the Bentgrass greens on the North Course did not meet Berkeley Hall standards from June through September From both a playability and aesthetics perspective and needed to be replaced.

Benefits of Champion BermudagrassChampion Bermudagrass was first in-troduced in 1995. It is an ultra dwarf cultivar that is now being used by 530 golf courses across 16 states in the South.

According to the USGA, Champion Burmudagrass across the Southern Region of the US provides a much more consistent putting surface on a daily basis, and green speeds as well as firmness will not fluctuate nearly as much as experienced with the Bentgrass. Greens that have been installed over 10 years ago are still performing well today. According to Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent, “The Champion Bermudagrass has a smaller leaf blade and a vertical growth pattern with less grain. Studies have proven that these characteristics would offer a quality putting surface to our Members. Champion Bermudagrass will grow and thrive in the summer heat, compared to the Bentgrass that struggles to survive.” He also noted that Champion Bermudagrass requires less water use and will greatly reduce the need for fungicides.

Work on the North Course greens will be scheduled for next summer. Matt Presnell, Director of Golf, is formulating procedures to expand Member play on the South Course and to make arrangements with other local golf clubs to access their facilities for Member and Guest play on a reciprocal basis. Details of these arrangements will be announced to the membership in the Spring of 2013.

Tour Events Playing on Champion GreensAltogether there have been 47 Tour events played on Champion Bermudagrass greens since 1996 including:
