  • As part of the High Street Showcase and Bedfringe well be selling locally sourced and made products that embody our love of the town on Saturday 27th July. From badges to t-shirts, stationery to art, theres something for everyone; visitors & Bedfordians alike. We asked local designers and makers to contact us with their ideas for alternative, cool and quirky souvenirs. There was a strict criteria:

The submissions have been of an extraordinarily high quality and are further proof that people are proud of our town and they want to spread the love!

So, when youre enjoying the High Street Showcase and Bedfringe activity on 27th July, pop into BedPop at the Tourist Information Centre on St Pauls Square and grab yourself a souvenir of our town. Please point any visitors you meet in our direction too so they can take a little bit of Bedford away with them too.

Theres still time to get involved in BedPop. If you would like to volunteer at the BedPop Shop on 27th July then please email [email protected] by Friday 12th July

This year, not only will you have the opportunity to submit your photos for the enjoyment of the A Photo A Day community, but each day we will judge and announce the Photo of The Day. The daily winners will then be judged overall to determine the top three photos from the month. The winners will each receive a Fuji camera and their photo will be mounted and framed by The Picture Gallery (one of our generous sponsors). All of the daily winners pictures will be displayed throughout September at the Picture Gallery and will be published in a very special issue of The Bedford Clanger.

If you didnt take part last year (where were you??) heres what its all about: photos must be taken in Bedford on the day and you can interpret the daily word however you want. Literal or metaphorical, obvious or obscure, quick camera-phone snap or professionally posed we just want as many people as possible to take part.

There are numerous ways to take part. Just join the Facebook group (A Photo A Day Bedford), follow us on twitter (@APhotoADay2013) and be part of the fun.

Were very grateful for the generous support weve received from organisations that all have a stake in Bedford: Fuji, The Picture Gallery, We Are Bedford , Coplan Estates and Bedford Borough Councils Economic Development department. Thank you! Now, get snapping

BedPop is a pop up shop with a difference. Were not taking over an empty unit, were just popping up in the existing Tourist Information Centre for one day only so catch us while you can!

So, July is finally here which means that the wait is over for this years A Photo A Day photography project. Are you taking part?

    4. And of course it has to be fabulous

    2. It has to reflect an aspect of Bedford

    1. It has to be designed and/or made in Bedford

    3. It has to be unique

LeTTer From The eDITorThere are some big changes afoot

at Clanger HQ and were really excited about what the future holds. Were developing the design, adding loads more pages and more exciting content and The Clanger will be available to lots more people. Were even going over the county line to share our love of our town with non-Bedfordians.

Because this change is going to take a lot of planning, time, love and effort, were going to spend our summer working it all out. So, there wont be an August or September issue while we prepare for the launch in October. However, we are planning a very exciting print project in September to celebrate this months A Photo A Day competition, so join our Facebook page or follow us on twitter (@bedfordclanger) to find out more

nearer the time.We really hope that you like what

weve got up our sleeves. Perhaps youd like to contribute or advertise your business to 40,000+ people? If

so, please email [email protected] and we can have a chat.

But were not just working on the paper. Weve also got plans for Clanger events so that we can contribute to the cultural landscape of the town. Exciting!

So: thanks for your support, have a good summer, take part in A Photo A Day, enjoy Bedfringe, get involved in the High Street Showcase, come & see us at the BedPop Shop, contribute to #citizenbedford, volunteer for the Portas Town Team, do something to make Bedford a better place and love our town.

  • Well, were here to help. Allow us to give you some top tips on what to see, how to make the most of it and where the venues are. Its going to be a blast!

Firstly, what is a Fringe festival? Over to BedFringe Director, James Pharaoh, to give us the skinny:

I like to define it as a platform for new

and exciting work covering all genres of the performing arts including theatre, comedy, dance, poetry and live music. All our arts are hand-picked by the Bedfringe team to give you one of the strongest fringe programmes in the country. Take a risk and see something you would never normally see thats what its all about. We hae lots of new venues including anoutdoor stage in Harpur Square, plus an open air cinema. Catch a couple of our world premier shows and be one of the first people to see the

Next Big Thing. The most important thing is to just take part. Come and interact with the Bedford International Festival Fringe.

Here are JPs top five shows that you will

    not want to miss:

The VeIL (Le FouLArD)The Harpur Suite (Hub2) Saturday 20th at 4pm & Sunday 21st July at 730pmTickets are 7.50Described as An Art Show made with love by an Idiot, whats not to like? This was awarded Bedfringe Pic of the Fest last year, so make sure you see it when it returns for 2013.

BorIS & SerGey IIBedford Theatre, Saturday 13th at 6pm and Sunday 14th July at 2.30pmTickets are 7Puppetrys Balkan bad boys Boris & Sergey

are the greatest vaudevillian double act ever conceived for the small stage. If you missed their triumphant show at Bedford Theatre earlier this year, then make sure you dont make the same mistake again. Highly recom-mend by James and the Clanger team too.

erICS TALeS oF The SeAHarpur Suite (Hub2) Saturday 28th at 12.30pm and Sunday 29th July at 6pmTickets are 8To call Erics Tales of the Sea a comedy show would not be doing it justice. This is a true life story of danger, suspense and true love underwater. Stewart Lee (yes, him) said Erics Tales of the Sea is what the stage was invented for. My favourite Fringe show of the last few years. Go!

ATTACk oF The 50 FooT WomAnBedford Theatre, Friday 12th, Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th July at 7.30pmTickets are 7.50Suitable for all ages, this show is a live puppet performance of the cult 1950s film.

Combining puppets, object theatre and mask with marionette,, rod and shadow puppetry, vintage cars, fabulous clothes & an original 50s inspired soundtrack, a trip down Route 66 was never as dangerous!

The noISe nexT DoorThe Ent Shed, Tuesday 16th July at 7.30pmTickets are 6If youre not sure how sketch comedy works on a live stage, then we urge you to go and find out at The Noise Next Doors

show at the Ent Shed. This show has sold out at Edinburgh for the last two years and we predict The Noise will be the Next Big

Thing. Dont just take our word for it: Hilarious said The Daily Telegraph.

But dont just take James word for it. We asked some of our Facebookers what their Bedfringe tips were:

Clare from Oxjam recommends checking out the Bedrock Stage in Harpur Square. Definitely worth a freebie punt and

brought to you with assistance from Oxjam. Also, check out comedians on YouTube before you book tickets to get a taste of the style or get your boyfriend to do it for you as I did.

Alice Smith (Clanger contributor & coffee and cake connoisseur): Theres so much comedy that I want to see that it might come down to which flyer I like the best

Kayte Judge (Queen of Bedford) suggests: Take a punt AND look out for the Bedfringe on the Streets acts. They are good & free - but do go and pay for some stuff too.

Stuart Kingston has some wise words too: I use the programme and also keep up-to-date on the website for new additions. On the other hand, I have asked my 12 year old sone what he wants to see and will therefore be going to a few shows I wouldnt normal-ly go to. And, as long as the weathers ok I will be going to the Bedrock Stage [give him a wave, Clare! Ed] for the afternoon of 26th July as there are some great bands playing there.

Erica Roffe, BedPop Shopkeeper: Pop along to the BedPop Shop in the Tourist Info Centre while youre in town on Saturday 27th July. Well be selling beauti-ful locally designed Bedford souvenirs from as little as 50p. [Thats enough flagrant

    plugging Ed]

    3What will you see?

So, Bedfringe is nearly here and maybe youre still not entirely sure what its all about. Is it just for arty culture vultures? Is it all experimental stuff in weird venues? Is it for you?

You wont be able to move for Bedfringe venues in the town this summer. From Castle Mound to the Corn Exchange, Harpur Square to The Howard Room, South Bank Arts Centre to St Cuthberts Hall (and everywhere in between) - its taking over the town from 12th July to 3rd August.

Outdoor activity includes open air Shakespeare (Midsummer Nights Dream and Much Ado About Nothing) on Castle Mound and in Harpur Square, plus the Bedrock Music Stage curated by those dudes at Oxjam. Thanks to additional funding from the Arts Council, Kayte Judge has put together a programme of FREE outdoor stuff for all the family. Venues and events are constantly being added to the www.bedfringe.com website, so make sure you check it out.

  • At Bedford network we share with you our best experiences of Bedford from cafes to art galleries, theatres to books, fitness to fashion. Anything and everything but only the best.

Here we talk to one of Bedfords top hair stylists about her career and trending styles over the last decade.

Esther Crichlow Francis trained at Bedford College and joined Fletchers Hair Salon as a stylist 15 years ago. She is now Artistic Director specialising in bridal hair and colour correction. That means she can put right colour disasters if youve ever experimented yourself and ended up with green hair youll know what disaster is! Esther also trains junior stylists and is a qualified assessor.

Talking about style trends over the last 15 years, Esther explained that clients have asked for styles made famous by stars of TV, film and sport such as the Rachel

cut (Friends), the Victoria Beckham Pob and David Beckhams Mohawk, to today with the dip-dye look made famous by Made in Chelsea, and the big hair look from TOWIE. Styles are now changing from the sleek straight look, to tussled and

curled. And big hair rollers are making a come-back!

Esther says: I love working at Fletchers. Its an excellent training salon that keeps you fresh and up to date. Hairdressing is forever changing and moving forward as new products and equipment are developed. Training here is ongoing and shows and competitions add a real boost and adrenalin rush as well as being very satisfying. They allow you to express your vision and show your expertise.

I get great satisfaction from seeing the change in someone who has arrived feeling down about themselves and after a makeover leaves feeling fantastic. A good hair style can transform.

Hair styling is a balance of artistic and technical expertise and much more complex than people imagine. Its hard work but extremely rewarding.

I tell our juniors to imagine they are on a stage when they are in the salon we give our clients individual attention and the best experience.

The locks of Bedford Network have been tamed and teased by Esther to us she is the Wonderwoman of Hair!

Fletchers Hair Studio offers hair and beauty treatments for men, women and children at 99 Tavistock Street, Bedford, tel 01234 272575. Follow on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Fletchers-Hair-Studio where youll be the first to hear

    BEDFRIngE 2013

For those who havent yet seen the new interior (and I urge you to book a table soon), it feels notably lighter with a white-tiled kitchen area which is open so diners are able to watch as their pizza bases are expertly flung and stretched. A stylish eating experience is conjured thanks to the pale wood panelling around the counter, ivory leather banquette seating, circular white 1920s style marble tables and large monochrome lampshades above, decorated with lines resembling a running track. This sophisticated choice of decor gives off a very minimalist vibe which is understandable as it was founded (by Peter Boizot) in 1965, a year after the first Habitat store was opened.

The atmosphere inside is friendly and family orientated (kids receive crayons, a paper chefs hat and a packet of seeds upon arrival) and Sonia, the duty manager, clearly runs an efficient and happy ship. The menu offers a wide variety of choice, for the more conservative theres the Margherita and the exceedingly popular American (pepperoni), or if wanting the exotic theres the Veneziana which includes a topping of sultanas and pine kernels. Dietary requirements are taken into consideration and gluten-free pizzas are readily available as well as pizzas containing less than 500 calories. If you were to have a starter, I would wholeheartedly recommend the hot dough balls with garlic butter. But we plump for puddings rather than starters, For the main we went for the Diavolo, the Pollo ad Astra and an eye-watering but utterly delicious Polpette Bolognese. They all arrive promptly. and were devoured just as quickly. We all went for dessert, of the chocolate and coffee variety and can again thoroughly recommend them, though the brownie with the complimentary espresso will keep you wide awake for several hours ideal for the nocturnal truck driver, less so if its lights out by eleven.

reVIeW coFFEE & cAkE At hARPUR coFFEE co

Ladies, gentlemen and children of Bedford: listen up! I have news of some InCreDIBLe CAke.

I know that this column is about coffee AND cake (and tea and biscuits too,) but usually cafes err towards one thing or the other. Dont get me wrong, Harpur Coffee Co. serves beautifully prepared Lavazza coffee, but the news from the Harpur centre is ALL ABOUT THE CAKE. If, like me, you are somewhat uninspired by the Harpur Centre ; its clean and practical and useful , not to mention rain-proof, but not exactly a hotbed of interesting independent business-es you should take a stroll (or a light jog, tinged with a mild sense of panic if you are travelling at speed with small children) down the spiral to Harpur Coffee.

There is plenty of space, with tables and chairs spread across much of one side of the ground floor; there are even special

tables and chairs for the smaller guests . Space, plus special tables, as every parent knows, are two factors crucial in being able

to actually enjoy the experience of going out for coffee and cake. Places that are child friendly AND serve great food are not everso common in the town centre, so it is worth making the point here, but this is not just a kiddy-cafe. This is a slice of well-baked genius.

And yes, the cake. The counter looks like a masterclass in how to make your cakes rise. These are no flat apologies for sponge

cake. These are cakes on another scale. And the vast majority of them are made in the kitchens of Harpur Coffee by the staff. I met manager Katie, who suggested I had a slice of the Oreo Cookie Cake, which is as great a cookie/cake hybrid as it sounds. Pieces of cookie were mixed into the beautifully light, perfectly executed sponge, topped with cookie-cream topping. The mini coffee and cake correspondent and I were both very impressed, and slightly in awe of the selection. In addition to the Oreo triumph, there was an oozing lemon curd cake, coffee and walnut, Victoria sponge, chocolate fudge, chocolate and hazelnut, brownies, rocky road, the most

luxurious cornflake cake I have ever seen.

And yes, I think that the words luxuri-ous and cornflake are words that exist

perfectly legitimately in the same sentence in this instance. I should give the coffee a mention great taste and perfectly frothed. There was a good tea selection, and they do also serve sandwiches, toast, kids lunch boxes and smoothies, but I am afraid I only really had eyes for the cakes this time. In summary it is well worth a trip down the spiral to check out the rest of the selection in more detail, and to support a family-run, independent coffee shop holding its own in the centre of Bedfords chain-store commerce. Hurrah for Harpurs!

The Pad Presents are getting in on the Bedfringe act this year and in some style we must say. They are bringing multi-platinum selling band Ash (with support from Violet Bones + Dolomite minor) to the Corn exchange on Tuesday 23rd July.

Ash have six top 10 albums to their name (including two number one albums 1977 & Free All Angels) and theyve spawned probably more huge singles than you can actually remember. Looking back over their back catalogue its actually incred-ible how many massive tracks theyve put out including Girl from Mars, Oh Yeah, Shining Light, Burn Baby Burn, Goldfinger,

Numbskull, Sometimes,Candy, A Life Less Ordinary, Envy just to name a few.

This the Pad Presents big show of the summer and tickets are selling fast. As ever,

your ticket will also guarantee entry to the after show party so we recommend you book your Wednesday off work now!Tickets are 15 advance and on sale now from www.bedfordcornexchange.co.ukBox office - 01234 718112

LocAL hERoThis month we celebrate James Pharaohs contribution to Bedford. Paula Walker has nominated James and here she explains why:

In his dual roles as Bedford Theatre manager and Director of the Bedfringe festival, James Pharoah has been instrumen-tal in extending the cultural opportunities for the people of Bedford.

The theatre is mainly a teaching space for Bedford School, but James has also

developed a professional programme of touring theatre which is open to the public.

Having recently been to two contrasting performances, the utterly hilarious Boris and Sergei puppet show and the moving World War One story The Trench, I can vouch for the quality of the productions which James is bringing to Bedford.

The wonderful Bedfringe Festival is now in its seventh year and the 2013 festival will be the biggest so far, having been extended to three weeks. James and his co-director Richard Mann came up with the idea back in 2006, having performed in a show at the Edinburgh Fringe. They set up the first Bedfringe in 2007 and the ever

more popular festival has become a Bedford institution. Its people like James who make Bedford a better place to live.

In partnership with Bedfringe, the Big High Street Showcase is going to be a day of family festival fun and the whole of the town will be buzzing with loads of activities for all ages. There will be plenty to see, and even more to get involved in yourselves. So roll up, roll up and take part!

Greg Warwick, owner of Jeeves and Chair of the Friends of High Street Business Group, said: We wanted to create a community event to showcase the fantastic wealth of independent businesses we have in Bedford, particularly in the High Street area.

Town centre businesses cannot wait to welcome visitors old and new to the Big High Street Showcase. Weve got a

music stage, free childrens entertainment and rides, classic cars, a special guest appearance from Mater from Cars the movie, a full programme of dance acts and a sports arena as well as the Handmade in Bedfordshire Market.

James Pharaoh, Director of Bedfringe, said: Bedfringe 2013 was all about moving the majority of our programming back into the town centre. This move has encouraged more fabulous events not to mention an overwhelming amount of support.

We look forward to the out-door stages in Harpur Square, Silver Street and the High Street Showcase. Not to mention some 130 events in 17 venues from 12th July to 3rd August!

Among all the other activities, the newly re-opened Higgins will pop up in the former Allders Opticians shop. Visitors will be able to learn about the fascinating history of our High Street and create their very own Victorian shop front.

Bedford High Street will be closed to traffic from the junction with St Peters

Street to the north of St. Pauls Square and from Duk
