After a lengthy argument between the two parties, the protest leaders had a brief discussion with the police. The leaders restored peace, after pleading with the protestors to calm down and exercise their rights peacefully. The memorandum was ultimately received by Namate, with the protestors giving the municipality only 48 hours (from Wednesday. 21 October) to respond. In a telephonic interview on Monday, 26 October, concerned residents leader Hendrick Malatji said they have submitted another application for picketing. He said they will be calling for the resignation of the mayor and all councillors.

Waterberg residents encouraged to plant trees at Arbor Day celebrations

People from various municipalities of theWaterberg converged on Modimolle’s EphraimMogale Stadium on Tuesday, 20 October, tocelebrate an event which served to remindthem about the importance of tree planting andpreserving.MEC of Sport, Arts and Culture Nandi

Ndalane, who was acting as the MEC ofAgriculture and Rural Development on the day, addressed scores of people who travelled fromacross the Waterberg into the PhagamengTownship.MEC Ndalane highlighted that the aim of

Arbor Week is to promote awareness of theneed for planting and preserving indigenoustrees throughout South Africa.“Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately

historically South Africa has never had aculture of tree planting until 1970 when a needto promote tree planting was recognized. Theconcept of a National Arbor Day then ensuedfrom the 1973 Green Heritage Campaign. Thegovernment approved the establishment ofNational Arbor Day in 1982 and it has been inplace countrywide since 1983. It is pleasing tonote that since 1983, the event captured theimagination of people who recognized the needfor raising awareness of the value of trees inour society. As sources of building material, food, medicine, and simple scenic beauty, treesplay a vital role in the health and well-being ofour communities. And it was the collectiveenthusiasm for the importance of this issue in

Mzamane Ringane South Africa which inspired the nationalgovernment”, she said. She also stated that another reason why tree

planting is important is due to the shade theyprovide to shelter plants, and to also reduceevaporation of water from soil by the sun. “This year we celebrate Arbor Day with the

hope to highlight the opportunities forsustainable economic development, community participation, poverty alleviationand job creation in forestry in order to create abetter life for all. Added to this, we are also celebrating the

Million Trees programme which encouragesthe planting of a million trees in the countryannually, we therefore encourage partnershipsacross the three spheres of government as wellas the private sector to take the greening of ourcountry forward, especially in previouslydisadvantaged areas,” she continued. She further urged all sectors of society both

private and public to incorporate greeningproject through Arbor Week into schoolenvironmental programs. The department handed over trees, which

according to Modimolle Mayor KgaretjaLekalakala will be planted at Extension 10.Various traditional groups including

Makubenjalo, Twananani Magaza Xiseveseve,Mangalani Swikwembu Swa Vahlengwe andThe Midos Crew enthralled the audience withtheir lively performances. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC),
