OCTOBER 2, 2013 Los Gatos Union School District Bulldog Beat www.lgusd.k12.ca.us Dear Van Meter Community, We have a problem and need your help! Many upper grade students are not eating lunch. One of two situations exists for these many of these students. The first scenario is some students just don’t want to take the time to eat, they want to get out and play. This problem has an easy fix as all students will have to sit in the lunch area for a minimum amount of time. The second scenario is more difficult and where we need your help! Some students have nothing to eat at lunch because they have eaten the lunch they brought from home during morning recess. And either they don’t have a lunch card or don’t want school lunch. If your child falls into this category you can help us in one of two ways: ensure your child eats a larger breakfast that will carry them through to lunch or pack a larger lunch so they have food for a snack and food for lunch. We would really appreciate your help on this front. Kids who don’t eat from morning until after school are sluggish and less alert in the afternoon. THE BIKE RODEO for grades 4 & 5 is this Thursday, October 3rd. If you have not signed up to help but have the time, please come anyway, as we can use all the extra hands we can find! Don’t forget to save yourself some cooking time. Enjoy a meal with your family and friends at MAIN ST. BURGER OR WILLOW STREET PIZZA on Wednesday, Oct. 9 th . Check the Home & School Club website for information and details! WOW – what a great event the LGUSD 150 TH CELEBRATION has been. A huge thank you to our parents who volunteered at Van Meter’s celebration on Thursday. It was very fun for those who attended. We even had a 98 year old woman, Mildred, who knew Louise Van Meter as a teacher at University Avenue School! Mildred was born in 1915 and began school in 1920. A special thanks to Donna McCurrie who put together an LVM “Then & Now” slide show. Donna put many hours into the slide show and was able to secure lots of photos through the years. It was a special treat to watch. If you did not attend the LGUSD 150th culmination event at Vasona Park on Saturday, you missed a great party! Lots of food was eaten, fun games were played, and performances were viewed. One of my personal favorite events, The Pumpkin Patch , is on its way. I still remember fall carnivals from when I was a child so we know they make a very long lasting impression on our children! Please watch your Wednesday e-packet and folder for ways you can volunteer and help. He collected masks and used them to influence his own style. This brought a fresh look to European art. For their hands-on project, students then became “Picasso” and created their own Mask using angles, big shapes, medium shapes and small shapes just like Picasso’s did. This hands on art project was completed in two 60 minute lessons. In the first lesson the students learned about Picasso and Cubism. They also learned how to create a cubist shape using 3 new oil pastel techniques: Inlining, Dots and Dashes and Gradation. Lastly students created a plan for their final artwork. They used color, design or animal features to express a story about their mask and connect it back to themselves. For example, the students could incorporate animal characteristics into their mask to show emotion- such as a lion’s mane to represent courage. They could also use a blue color to show a calm mask or a love of the ocean. In the second lesson, students used their mask sketch to create the final work of art where they incorporated all their oil pastel artist techniques. Enjoy the beautiful Artwork!

CORNERSTONE CORNER

10-Second Intervention: How caring adults can help create a safe campus

(Published from Project Cornerstone web site)

Sometimes even adults have trouble knowing how to intervene when they witness bullying behavior. The “10-second intervention” is one approach to reducing name-calling, put-downs, slurs, swearing and other forms of verbal abuse on campus. Every adult on campus who hears the offensive remark can make a difference by taking 10-seconds to intervene. Additional interventions may be required. But, every adult can be actively engaged in reducing bullying by using this technique.

The 10-Second Intervention:

1. Stop.

2. Turn calmly to whoever said the inappropriate statement.

3. Say something like, “That’s inappropriate language for school. Please don’t say it again”.

4. Then, move on – no lecture, argument or further discussion.

When every adult at school is doing this consistently, it really gets the attention of students. It also puts into the air that caring adults on campus are trying to do something about bullying and make school a safer and more caring place for all kids. Frequent use of the 10-second intervention sends a consistent and strong message to youth about what adults will permit at our school.

Another by-product of this action is that students may begin to see the adults intervening as people they can trust to take action against inappropriate behavior. Caring adults, who notice, name and respond with a 10-second intervention when they see and hear bullying become “islands of safety” for youth.

Everyone is welcome to attend a special training for parents on campus by Linda Silvius, Project Cornerstone’s School Partnerships Director, on Oct 22 at 8:30am at Daves Avenue Elementary.

Parents on Campus: a great way to be a caring adult at school

One way parents can help our school to be a safer, more caring place is to volunteer for Parents on Campus (POC) during lunchtime. Parent volunteers assist students at lunch by opening containers, encouraging positive behavior, and excusing students from the lunch area. In addition, parent volunteers help the playground supervisors by solving minor problems and monitoring the play areas until the final lunch recess bell.

Kids feel much safer when more caring adults are present in the play areas at school.  You can volunteer on a regular schedule or drop in anytime as your schedule permits. Any amount of time you have to offer– even once a month—will help!  When you arrive to volunteer, check in at main office to sign your name in the POC binder and to put on a neon volunteer vest. Just drop by or use iVolunteer  to sign-up today! If you have any questions about POC, please contact Pattie Martin at [email protected]
