The Schedel Arboretum & Gardens in Elmore planted600 chrysanthemums along the driveway approaching themanor house recently. The mums are of various colorsand were grown by Benchs Greenhouse in Elmore, ac-cording to superintendant Jeff Saffran. The SA&G ceasedplanting the beautiful fall display a few years ago in an ef-fort to save money. This year, however, thanks to a $1,000grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundationand a signicant gift from the family of Marilyn Bandeldthe tradition was restored.

Chrysanthemums are popular fall owers because oftheir bright colors and ability to withstand frosts oftenwell into November. Mums are a great example of a plantthat has been hybridized bred to one another from awide array of varieties to produce plants with different leafand ower characteristics. Originally grown in China asa owering herb, both the garden, or hardy, mums at theSA&G and the greenhouse mums that are used in owerarranging came from the same parent plant hundreds of

years ago a golden-yellow daisy like mum. It wasnt un-til the late 1700s that mums were cultivated in the U.S.Mums have different signicance in different cultures

Oct. 1 marks the one year anniversary of Emilys GSEJewelers.

Emily Baumert of Oak Harbor bought the business, formerly known as GSE Jewelers, when previous own-ers Roger and Linda Velliquette retired. Acting as storemanager for 11 of the 25 years that GSE Jewelers wasin operation, Baumert opted to buy the business afterthe Velliquettes offered the opportunity.

In the year Emilys GSE Jewelers has been open, shehas painted the store, removed the old dcor and re-

congured showcases as well as purchased new nejewelry, gift items, handbags and fashion jewelry. Itsexciting when long time customers come in to thestore and see all the changes, Baumert said. Im soblessed by the support of my community, family andfriends. Theyre truly the reason my rst year in busi-ness was a success.

To celebrate and as a way to say thank you, Emilys

GSE Jewelers has storewide sales ranging from 10 per-cent to 75 percent off. All diamonds, gemstones andgold and silver jewelry are on sale, as well as fashion

jewelry, handbags and giftware. In addition, duringthe month of October gift certicates are 20 percentoff.

With Sweetest Day on Oct. 19 and Christmas rightaround the corner, we wanted to start our year-endsales earlier than we ever have in the past. An anniver-sary sale seemed like the perfect way to achieve that!

Baumert added.Emilys GSE Jewelers is located in the Knoll CrestPlaza, at the corner of Ohio 53 and Ohio 163. Thestore is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sat-urday and is closed Sunday. The telephone numberis 419-732-6691, or you can visit them on the web atwww.emilysgse.com.

National data provided by AmericanSociety of Safety Engineers shows that people with devel-opmental disabilities have a 48% lower turnover rate, 67%lower medical costs, and ask for 73% less time off fromtheir positions. This data also shows that 50% would liketo work at a community job. The so-called experts

are simply misinformed!Newspapers are dead?Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulationnewspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. Thatis why you hear Newspapers are dead. Thats the bad news. The good news isFREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulationand readership! Our latest audit shows that nearly 80% of the households who getThe Beacon READ The Beacon. PLUS The Beacon is read by over 2 individuals perhousehold. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklieslike The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacons Web Site just gets betterand better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was

Hyper-Local before the term was coined!

So, when you hear Newspapers are dead ... dont believe it! Community papers arealive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we dont haveto worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit backand read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the good news happeningevery day.

With your love, help, prayers, support and donations wecan make a difference here in Ottawa County so that thereis no child hungry, reads the sign at Truth Ministries. OnWednesday, Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m. the doors of Truth Minis-tries were open, welcoming the community to a free meal. The rst Wednesday of every month Truth Ministriesoffers a free meal, but thats not all theyre offering thecommunity. Located in the former Portage Elementarybuilding, Truth Ministries also houses a resale shop and

a food pantry. Both the resale shop and food pantry arerun on donations. Kroger recently donated three palletsof frozen food to the food pantry for the community mealon Wednesday. Kroger, Bassetts, St. Josephs in Marble-head, private donors and a grant from the Ottawa CountyFoundation are the primary donors to the food pantry.Thats what keeps us going, said Lois Tuttamore.

Tuttamore is an inspiration for the program Truth Min-istries participates in called No Child Goes Hungry. 1 in5 children go hungry in America, said Tuttamore. Thatswhat has inspired us to start this program for the commu-nity. If people cannot get themselves to Truth Ministriesfor the free meal, a bus will pick people up who want toattend.

In the resale shop, prices are lower than a garage sale, said Tuttamore. All clothing is a quarter a piece. There arealso beds, furniture, books and more. The books are free.

We would rather people take and use the books than have

them sit here because someone cant afford to buy them,Tuttamore said.

With all these additional services that are offered for thecommunity, it is not to be forgotten that there are alsochurch services happening in the Truth Ministries build-ing. Church services are held at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.A nursery and Sunday school are available. Pastor BrianHild said, We are the church of the second chance. Wewant to be the kind of church Jesus would start.

The Church of Truth Ministries, the food pantry and theresale shop are located at 745 S. Lake Street in Gypsum.

The Mufer Smiths Complete Auto Repair is proudlysupporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by par-ticipating in the Brakes for Breasts campaign fundraiserwhere during the month of October this independently-owned auto repair shop is joining 50 other independentshops representing 19 states across the U.S. by offeringtheir customers FREE brake pads and donating 10% ofevery brake service directly to The Cleveland Clinic BreastCancer Vaccine Research Fund.

The Brakes For Breasts fundraiser is different from many

breast cancer fundraising campaigns which run duringOctober because funds raised by these independently-owned auto repair shops goes directly to the ClevelandClinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund in order to fund re-search of a vaccine which will lead to a cure for breast can-cer, not just treatments for the disease.

Another way that this fundraising mission is differentfrom many other breast cancer fundraising efforts is that100% of the proceeds go directly to the Cleveland Clinicand zero percent of these donated prots are lost in anytype of marketing and or administrative fees. Programfounder Leigh Anne Best felt it important to create a pro-gram where the participating shops could raise money foran organization working on a breast cancer vaccine curewhile each shop can see the direct impact of all the fundsthey raise.

2013 marks the third year for the Breaks For Breasts

fundraiser. It was launched in 2011 by two women, Leigh

Anne Best of Mighty Auto Pro in Medina, and Laura Frankof Royal Car Care & Tire Center in Brunswick. Of the pasttwo years fundraising successes and with this years enroll-

ment jump, Leigh Anne Best says:The third time is a charm! Our rst year (2010), weraised $10k with 5 shops. In 2012 we asked our fellowindependently-owned auto repair shop owners across thecountry to join our mission and we tripled participationwhile raising $33,000k. This year, we are 50 shops strongand have set a goal of $50K with 100% of their proceedsgoing to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund.

Sarah Williams of Port Clinton has embarked on apersonal tness journey. Both her parents had healthscares in their mid fties, so she realized she needs totake control of her future and steer toward healthierchoices.

Williams has recently become a Licensed PracticalNurse and as an advocate for public health, she feelsshe must examine the image she portrays to patients,

family and the community, as a role model of healthylifestyle choices.

One of her personal tness goals is to complete ahalf marathon, or 13.1 miles. In February of 2014, shewill be running the Glass Slipper Challenge, the En-chanted 10k and the Disney Princess Half Marathon atWalt Disney World in Orlando, FL, as a St. Jude Hero.Williams has pledged to raise $3,200 in donations tobenet the children and families of St. Jude ChildrensHospital in Memphis, TN.

St. Jude is a research hospital focused on eradicatingcatastrophic children diseases, mainly cancers. Its mis-sion is to nd cures of detrimental pediatric diseasesthrough research and treatment, and provides all treat-ment free of charge.

Said Williams, So I run. I run for the children andfamilies of St. Jude. I run for the little girls and boys

who dream of walking, skipping, dancing. I run for thepatients I personally take care- the elderly gentlemenwho fought overseas for the freedoms I have today, thelittle old women who carried the future of our country.I run for those who cannot.

My journey will be extremely challenging, but in theend it is a drop in a bucket compared to the sea of tri-als the children and families of St. Jude face on a dailybasis. In honor of the 19.3 miles I will complete, I amasking for donations of $19.30, although any donation
