The Basic Book Trailer
What is a Book Trailer? A book trailer is similar to a movie
trailer. It uses images, sound and sometimes
video to sell the book’s story to potential readers.
A good book trailer will build interest in a book, making readers curious enough to read it.
Book trailers can be tricky, since you need to think about how to convert the book’s written words into visual images.
In a book trailer it is important not to give the story away. Book trailers also tend to avoid showing images of the characters
Using PowerPoint to get creative
•PowerPoint is widely available and easy to use. •You set up slides and add images and music to them, add animation effects to the text and images, and you can add transition effects to each slide.•But first you need to choose a book you would like to market.•Choose one you are thoroughly familiar with.
Where to start?
Storyboard your ideas out. The first thing you want to
consider is how to convey the idea of your book, and get people excited about it.
What is it about the book that is appealing?
Who too?
Characters in book trailers
Watch the following book trailer and think about:
1. How the characters have been illustrated in a way that reveals their personalities, without revealing their appearance?
2. The trailer’s use of movement without video?
His Eyes - Book Trailer
The development of narrative
Often, visuals can be a distraction. Consider the following trailer. What does it use instead of visuals to “sell” the story? What makes it effective?
Why does it use only one colour? What makes it very clear that this is a different type of book than “His Eyes?”

Start with Simple but Effective
The following book trailer was prepared by a student.

Adding to the atmosphereA musical background
will add interest and emotion.
Think about good movie trailers. Did the intensity build as the trailer progressed? Did the music quicken, or become foreboding?

Getting Started
When you launch PowerPoint a default slide is automatically created. You can change the layout of the slide to suit your requirements. The handiest way to do that is to go to the Slides section of the Home toolbar, click on Layout, and select the layout you want from the available choices.
New Slides
To create a new slide, click on the dropdown menu (the bottom half of the icon where the arrow is) for the New Slide option in the Slides section of the Home toolbar. Choose the layout that best suits your requirements. If you simply click on the top half of the New Slide option, the new slide will have the same layout as the last layout you chose.
Inserting your pictureGo to the Insert toolbar and select Picture
from the Illustrations section. Find the picture you want to use from the directory, select it, and click on Insert.
Once the picture is in the slide, you can change its format. Select the picture (click on it once) and a Picture Tools menu option becomes available.
Inserting EffectsOnce your picture is inserted, click
Animations from the toolbar and choose your effect.
Then choose your transition speed.
Inserting SoundGo to the Insert toolbar and select Sound
from the Media Clips section. Find the sound file you want to use from the directory, select it, and click on Insert.
A message will come up asking if you want the sound to begin automatically or when you click the page – for book trailers automatically is best.
Adding movement
To a pictures or texts
Click on the picture and choose animations then custom animations. Play around with the effect you would like to create.
Putting it all togetherSelect the multiple slide view option next
to the slide show icon from the bottom menu.
Select Animations from the tool bar menu.
Go to Advance Slides and select your timings.
