Adventure Overview JoogeNopsmoth,atalentedbarber,haslonglivedinSilverymoonwithhisdaughter,Mops.Thetwohavealwaysbeenhappy,evenafterthedeathofJooge’swife,Giselle,afewyearsago—exceptthatJoogehasnoheadformoneyandanexcessivedesiretoexperimentwithnewbarberingtechniques.Oneday,JoogegaveahaircuttoawanderingkorrednamedBezoar.Thatstrangefeycreaturebecamehisregularcustomer,alwayscomingtoJoogeforcuts. JoogewasabletoearnabitofextramoneybysellingartobjectsmadefromBezoar’shaircuttings,whichthekorred’smagicalnaturetransformedintothesamehigh-qualitysteelasJooge’sscissors.Still,itwasn’tnearlyenoughforhimtobeabletoaffordtheflailsnailhesawofferedforsalefromapassingcaravan.Joogesuspectedcorrectlythattheflailsnail’scolorfulsecretionscouldbeusedtomakebrillianthairdyes,soheborrowedmoneyfromdarklingmoneylenderstobeabletoaffordthewondrouscreature.

Barber-Surgeons InmedievalEuropeandtheForgottenRealmsalike,barbersdonotmerelycuthair.Theyalsoperformavarietyofmedicalprocedures,includingdentistry,bloodletting(usingleeches),andsimplesurgeriesandbattlefieldamputations.Inreal-worldBritain,barbersandsurgeonswerenotrecognizedasseparateprofessionsuntil1745.Thebarbershopinthisadventureisa“traditional”barbershopwherehaircuts,hairstyling,andavarietyofsurgicalanddentaloperationsareallperformed.

Where’s the Map? Thisuniqueadventurecomeswithanequallyuniquewalk-throughmap,courtesyofauthorandillustratorJasonBradleyThompson.Havingcreatedwalk-throughmapsforclassicD&Dadventuresbotholdandnew,JasonhasthistimeturnedhisattentiontoVolo’sGuidetoMonsters,highlightinganumberofthenewcreaturesfromthatbookinthischillinglyhumoroustaleofevilbarbering.DMscandownloadthewalk-throughmaphere—butplayerswhomighttakepartintheadventurearewarnedthatthemapcontainsmajorspoilers.

Unfortunately,theprofitsfromsellingthosedyesprovednotashighasJoogehadhoped.Thedarklingsweresoonpesteringhimtocollecthisdebt.Whentheycouldn’t,themoneylenderssoldthatdebttoastrangewoman—actuallyadreadfulannishagnamedErrevasticaindisguise.Thepossessorofamalevolentmagicitemcalledtheevilcomb,thehaghadlonghadhereyeonBezoar,andsawJoogeasawaytotakecontrolofthekorred.Thehaghadbecometheleaderofagroupofxvartsbydisguisingherselfasabeautifulfemalespecimenthatcametobeknownas“Xvartette.”VisitingJooge,thehagquicklytookcontrolofhimandusedhimtocapturethekorred.

A Hair-Raising Plot BybrushingBezoar’shairwiththeevilcomb,Errevasticaturnedthekorred’sluxuriouslocksintoevil,living,tentacle-likehairthatnowdoesherbidding.Furthermore,thehagknewthatthisparticularkorredhadasecretmagicbeyondthenaturalmagicofitskind.Notonlydoesitscuthairtransformintothematerialofthetoolorimplementthatcutit,thathairtransformsintoalivingcreaturewhencutortornbyanotherlivingcreature’steeth,claws,orhands!SincecapturingBezoarandimprisoningthekorredunderthewatchfulgazeofthexvarts,thehaghasallowedthexvartstotearapartclumpsofhishair.Thoseclumpsaretransformedintonewxvarts,rapidlyincreasingtheirnumbersasfastasthekorred’shaircangrow. Inamasterstrokeofmalevolence,thehagthenforcedJoogetopullouttwoclumpsofthekorred’shair—onetouchedbytheevilcombandoneuntouched.ThosetwoclumpstransformedintotwonewversionsofJooge:anevilversionwhoisthehag’sstaunchally,andagoodversionwhowasbrainwashedtoremoveallmemoryofthehag. Now,whiletheoriginalJoogerotsinthehag’sdungeonsbelowthebarbershop,goodJoogerunstheshopbyday,usingitasacoverforthehag’snefariousactivities.EvilJoogerunstheshopbynight,usingittocaptureunsuspectingprey.Someoftheshop’svictimsareeatenbythehagorsacrificedbythexvartsintheirdungeonbelowtheshop.Othersareusedbyevil

Now,onlytheadventurerscanstoptheevilbarberandtheannishagbeforeallofSilverymoonisoverrunbyxvartsandtormentedbyevilJooge’shair-cuttingschemes.

Adventure Hook TheBarberofSilverymoonbeginswiththecharactersarrivinginthecityandhearingrumorsofthemysteriousdisappearances.Thefirsttimethecharactershearhowthereturnedvictimsallcomebackwiththeirhaircropped,colored,andstyledinthemostexquisiteways,haveoneofthecharactersrememberspottingJooge’sbarbershopasthepartyenteredthecity.Therumorsthecharactershearandtheirsubsequentinquirieseventuallyleadthemtowardtheshop. (Thoughithasitsdarkermoments,thisisawhimsicaladventure,sodon’tworrytoomuchaboutmatterssuchaswhynooneelseinSilverymoonhasdiscoveredtheconnectionbetweenJooge’sbarbershopandthedisappearances.)

Interviews and Investigations Ifanycharactershavetheguildartisanorentertainerbackground,oriftheplayersuseroleplayingtohavetheircharactersengageanycityNPCsofyourchoiceinconversation,theylearnthatthebarber-surgeonJoogeNopsmothiswellregardedbothasagoodfatherandanexpertbarber.Heis,however,knowntobebadwithmoney,alwaysbuyingexpensivenewhaircuttingequipmentandpriceygiftsforhisdaughter,Mops. Morethanonce,Joogehastakenoutsmallloansfromhisneighbors,thoughthesearealwaysrepaid.HisneighborsalsoknowthatJoogehasrecentlytakentocarvingandsellingabstractmetalsculpturesshapedlikelocksofhair.(Intruth,thesearelocksofkorredhair,whichturnstosteelwhenJoogecutsitwithhisscissors.)

A Colorful Business Plan Jooge’sneighborscanalsotellthecharactersthatthebarberpurchasedaflailsnailfromtravellingwizardssomesixmonthsago,hopingtouseittocreateuniquehairdyesandpigments.Flailsnailsarerareandvaluable,andthepeopleofSilverymoonwere

impressed.Forabrieftimeafterthat,anumberofmysterious,short,cloakedfigureswereseenaroundthebarbershop.Thoughmanyofhisfriendsfearedthatthesestrangersmightbeplanningarobbery,Joogeseemedunconcerned.Inanycase,thecloakedfigureshavenotbeenseeninmonths. IftheadventurersaskspecificquestionsaboutJooge’swork,oneofhisneighborsmentionshowJoogehadoneofhisownteethreplacedwithanirontoothsometimewithinthelastsixmonths.WhyJoogedidn’tuseagoldorporcelainreplacementtooth,theneighbordoesn’tknow.

Following the Money Ifanyofthecharactershavethecharlatan,criminal,orurchinbackgrounds,oriftheplayersuseroleplayingtohavetheircharactersmakefurtherinquiriesaboutJooge’sbusiness,theylearnthatJoogetookoutaloanof10,000gpfromsomecriminalstobuytheflailsnail.FurtherresearchturnsupthatJoogeborrowedthemoneyfromdarklingmoneylenders—thecloakedfiguresseenbyhisfriendsandneighbors. Withafewclandestineinquiries,theadventurerscansetupameetingwiththedarklings,whotellthecharactersthatafterseveralunsuccessfulattemptstogettheirmoneybackfromJooge,theysoldhisdebttoamysteriousrichhumanwoman.Thewomannevergavehername;thedarklingsknowonlythatshewasbeautiful(byhumanstandards)exceptforthefalseteethshewore,allofwhichwerecraftedofiron.(ThiswomanwastheannishagErrevasticaundertheeffectofitsdisguiseselfspell.) Ifyoufeelasthoughthecharactersmightneedcombatassistanceintheadventure,oneortwodarklingscanbehiredasmercenariesatarateof100gpeachperday.

Jooge’s Barbershop Fromtheoutside,Jooge’sshopandhousemakeupamodest,well-keptbuildingwhoseonlyremarkablefeatureistheflailsnailhekeepsinhisgarden.Butinthesubterraneanlevelsbeneaththebarbershop,Errevasticatheannishaghascreatedaplaceofhorror.

Storeroom Thisclutteredbackroomcontainswine(usedasantiseptic),mandrakerootandlaudanum(bothusedasanesthetic),hairoils,pomades,scissors,clamps,drills,andothermundaneequipment.Aholeinthefloorleadsdowntoadisusedwellturnedintoaleechpit(area2B),fromwhichJoogecollectstheleechesheusesforbloodletting.ASmallorsmallercreaturecanclimbdownthehole.WhileevilJoogeworksatnight,hisfourxvartguardsarefoundhere,snackingonleeches.

Hair and Horror UnderthedirectionofevilJooge,thesecondlevelofcellarsbeneaththeshophasbeentransformedintoahorridlyefficientevilbarberingoperation.

Barbershop of Evil ThiscellarhasbeenconvertedbyevilJoogeintotheultimatelairofforbiddenbarberingtechniques.Groovesinthefloorallowoneofthreespeciallydesignedbarber’schairstobepushedupthestairsandtomostlocationsonthislevel(exceptareas3Eand3G,whicharebehinddoors).Thechamberislitbylanternsatareas3Aand3C. ThisroomisinhabitedbyevilJoogebyday,andwheneverhecapturesaclient.SincesplittingofffromtheoriginalJooge,evilJoogehasgainedmagical


abilitiesandisnowawarlockofthearchfey.HeknowsthateventuallyhewillbecomepowerfulenoughthatErrevasticawillviewhimasathreat,andsohesecretlyplotsagainstherevenwhilepretendingtocareonlyabouthismadbarberingexperiments. EvilJooge’sassistantisaredcapthateagerlyassistsinthetormentofhisclients—sometimestothepointofbecomingsoexcitedthatitendsevilJooge’sexperimentsprematurely.BecausetheredcapwascreatedbyErrevastica,ittechnicallyservesthehag.However,itspendsallitstimewithevilJoogeandisfondofhim.Theredcapdoesn’tknowaboutevilJooge’splanstobetraytheannishag,orviceversa. WheneverevilJoogeortheredcapareatworkhere,1d4xvartsarealsointhearea,sweepinguphairandmoppingupblood. Abjurer Oubliette This30-foot-deepfloorcellcontainsBernadette,aneutralabjurerandmemberoftheArcaneBrotherhood—thelegendarymage’sorderofLuskan.BernadettewascapturedbyevilJoogewhilegettingherhaircurled,anditwasfromherthatevilJoogelearnedthemagicsecretsheusedtobuildthePrismaticColoringMachine.Bernadettepromisestorewardanyadventurerswhofreeherfromthepit,andshemakesgoodonherword(see“ConcludingtheAdventure”).Althoughstillabletocastcantrips,shehasbeenunabletoescapethepitwithoutherspellbook,whichisheldbythehaginarea4J.

4J. Xvarts’ Lair Thishugecavefilledwithhair,filth,andrats,ishometoforty-fivexvarts,twoxvartwarlocksofRaxivort,

andErrevasticatheannishag.Errevasticaisneverinhertrueform,insteadmaintainingtheillusionofbeingXvartette,a10-foot-tall,purple-skinned,femalexvartofrarebeauty(atleastasfarastheotherxvartsareconcerned).Thehagalwaysholdstheevilcomb,whichsheusestogroomBezoar’sever-growinghair. Thexvartsareinfatuatedwiththeannishaganddoherbiddingwithoutquestion,evenovercomingtheirusualfearoflargerhumanoidsintheirzealtoimpressher.Usingthekorred’shairtogeneratemoreofthemselves,theyhopeeventuallytocreateanarmy(ledbyXvartette)capableofconqueringallotherraces.Theyhavenoideaoftheannishag’strueform,andwouldlikelyfleeinpaniciftheysawit—ashappensifErrevasticarevertstohertrueformafterbeingkilledincombat. ErrevasticalooksforwardtoseeingevilspreadinSilverymoon—andtofeastonthecitizensandchildrenofthecity.Herxvartshavesofarbeenengagingonlyinactsofstealthyrobberyaboveground,butwhenherarmyislargeenough,sheplanstosenditforthtoengageinever-greateractsofmaliceandmurder.SheencouragesevilJooge’sexperimentsbutkeepsoneeyeonhim,warythathemightbecometoopowerful.
