WELCOME TO WORSHIP We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Welcomers or Sidespersons for a Parish Information Pack.

EPIPHANY SEASON Epiphany means ‘manifestation’. The season of joyful celebration that begins at Christmas continues through the successive Sundays of Epiphany, ending with the Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas). The child who has been manifested to the magi at his birth is now recognized by Simeon and Anna, when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles’ and ‘the glory of God’s people Israel’. But the redemption he will bring must be won through suffering; the Incarnation is directed to the Passion; and Simeon’s final words move our attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter. PRAYER OF THE DAY Eternal God, at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: grant that all who are baptised into his name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. FIRST READING Isaiah 42:1-9 A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;

he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the Lord , who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the Lord , I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord , that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 29 Response: The Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. 1 Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven: ascribe to the Lord glory and might. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name: O worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thunders, the Lord upon the great waters. The Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. 4 The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation: the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar-trees: the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes them skip like a calf: Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. The Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. 7 The voice of the Lord divides the lightning-flash: the voice of the Lord whirls the sands of the desert, the Lord whirls the desert of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the Lord rends the terebinth trees, and strips bare the forests: in his temple all cry ‘Glory.’ 9 The Lord sits enthroned above the water-flood:

the Lord sits enthroned as a king for ever. 10 The Lord will give strength to his people: the Lord will give to his people the blessing of peace. The Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. SECOND READING Acts 10:34-43 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 34 Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37 That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ Hear the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Matthew 3:13-17 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ 15 But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. SENTENCE OF THE DAY A voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ Matthew 3.17

CBM is an international Christian development organisation devoted to improving the lives of people with disabilities in the poorest places on earth. Poverty and disability go hand in hand creating a cycle of inequality,

isolation and exclusion that leads to the most extreme forms of poverty. Through their 110 year history and over 30 years in Australia, they have developed proven community based programs that help millions of people benefit from real, lasting change. This includes preventing and treating avoidable blindness such as cataract, river blindness and trachoma; helping practically by providing aids and equipment, access to much-needed treatment, learning a skill and going to school; and transforming lives of people with disability, influencing communities, organisations and governments to change attitudes and policies so everyone is included.

See www.cbm.org for more information.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is a development organisation working in more than 25 countries to help train and empower local eye doctors, nurses and health workers to create a sustainable system of care in the communities that need it most. Their work has a very clear purpose: to make sure everyone, whether they’re rich or poor, has access to high quality, affordable eye health.

The Parish Council would like to present an Alpha Course at St Andrew’s early next year, on Fridays 9.30am—11.30am, commencing with an Introductory Session on Friday 24th January to talk about what the course will cover and to assist those who are yet to decide if they wish to participate. The course is an overview of the Christian faith so it is great for those who have questions or want to investigate Christianity as well as being a back to basics course for Christians. Into the bargain, it’s a chance to make new friends and have fun together. Attendance at the Introduction on 24th January is open to all and does not commit you to continuing on. There will then be ten weekly sessions starting on Friday 31st January and finishing on 3rd April (just before Easter), plus a session on Saturday 7th March, when we learn more about the Holy Spirit. Speak to Jean Ward or Anne Bowyer for more information, or take a look at their website www.alpha.org We welcome Paul (Skip) Smith to our services at St Andrew’s today. He will speak a little bit about Alpha at the end of our worship.

Thought for the day Today we celebrate the ‘Baptism of Jesus’, and so it seems an appropriate time to recall our own baptism, and what it means. The ‘worksheet’ opposite was prepared for the Methodist Church in England by Dave Walker (who produces a lot of thought-provoking cartoons at www.cartoonchurch.com). Enjoy!
