I t is important to warm up — yes, even in hot Bakersfield — before each workout to ensure that the muscles and surrounding tissue receive enough blood and nutri- ents to perform any required tasks during actual exercises. Skipping the warm up can sometimes result in painful tears that take time and rest to heal. Try 10 minutes of a dynamic warm up. What exactly is a dynamic warm- up? It involves moving parts of your body and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement, or both. Do not confuse dynamic stretching with bal- listic (bouncing movements) stretch- ing. Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you gently to the limits of your range of motion. Ballistic stretching forces your body past its safe range of motion. In dynamic stretches, there are no bounces or jerking movements. An example of dynamic stretching would be slow, controlled leg swings, arm swings, or torso twists. And one more thing: please stay hydrated before, during and after your workout. Even the warm up moves work best when the body is hydrated. Think of driving your car with an empty tank of gas. Your sys- tem can, and will, shut down with minor or major collateral damage in the form of injuries. Gina Rolow, owner of Body By Gina, is a personal train- er at Anytime Fitness. Rolow conducts one-on-one private sessions, semi-private ses- sions and a weekend boot camp. She also teaches fitness at Cal State Bak- ersfield and has a combined 30 years in the fitness industry. Drum line has forever changedme as a musician, and as ahuman being. For the lastthree years, drum line at Cen-tennial High School has been

a large part of my life. Throughoutmarching season and indoor season, the responsibility and leadership skillsof each member of every ensemble areput to the test.

Without drum line, I would not bethe person I am today. Drum line is anartistic outlet that allows me to

express myself through music and themarching arts. In addition, it acts as astress reliever. It has introduced me towonderful people that have taught melessons I will never forget — and thatshape me now as a person.

Responsibility is thrust upon everyindividual in the ensemble. Even if oneperson is not there, or does not knowtheir music or drill, the whole groupfalls. The time taken out of every-body’s schedule pays off when you areperforming in front of the crowd —

feeling the intensity and ferocity ofyour own perform-ance.

It pays off to per-form and do whatyou love. Hours ofpractice each weekpays off at the endof the season dur-ing finals whenevery competitor isstanding on thegym floor waiting

for their school’s name to beannounced. It also pays off when the

group walks up to the front to receivetheir medals, while everyone in theaudience cheers and congratulates youon how amazing you did.

Drum line gives me that ecstaticfeeling of joy that nothing else couldsupply. It has prepared me for thefuture, and taught me lessons that Iapply to everyday life.

Overall, for me, drum line is that onething that gives me reason. Drum lineis what I do — and I do what I love.
