“We each have our own niche in the community where we can offer guidance and value to the campaign.” Those were the sentiments of Board Secretary Jodie Wagner, as the annual United Way campaign kicked off in August with the Board of Directors tasked with leading the efforts. With a monetary goal of $340,000, the board and staff recognize that it will be a challenge, but not one they as individuals – or collectively as a group – want to shy away from. “The United Way has supported - and continues to support - so many wonderful programs and services within our community,” said Stacy Williams. “The impact is far-reaching, and involves all ages of our community members. Without funding from the United Way, some of these worthy programs would not exist.”

Wagner says she’s looking beyond the $340,000. “I would love to see us exceed that goal to be able to provide even more funding to our local non-profits for the programs they continue to offer to the community.”

“Yes, meeting that monetary goal is a priority, but we’re also striving to be the best advocates for the funded agencies; the best stewards of our donors’ generosity; and increase awareness that giving to the United Way is still the easiest way to touch the greatest number of lives,” said Executive Director Mandi Wilton Davis. The campaign was already at four percent of that monetary goal as of the August 15 kickoff, with efforts continuing through December 15. All money raised will be distributed during the 2018 calendar year.

Your Chamber is growing...Melissa Franklin, an early reach coordinator with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, will offer career advice to people with disabilities. The program will be held at the Bradford Area Public Library Thursday, September 7th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Contact the library to register at 814-362-6527 or register at the circulation desk. The event is free and open to the public.

Searching for a job is difficult enough, but when you have a disability it can be even more difficult. Franklin will offer advice for making the job search easier. Franklin will explain the definition of disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008.

She will discuss specific opportunities for people with various disabilities. In addition, she will offer advice on job hunting skills for people with disabilities. She will also explain how the American Disability Act (ADA) protects and affects people with disabilities.

PA CareerLink and the Bradford Area Public Library are working together to better serve our community. This program will be the first of future monthly seminars to help individuals who are seeking employment or better occupational opportunities. With anticipated cutbacks in federal and state programs, there is even more of a need for people to become gainfully employed. CareerLink and the library recognize this, and are collaborating to serve our community. In the future, the library will arrange to have representatives from CareerLink come in to provide help to individuals. For further information, contact Colette Roessler at the library at 814-362-6527.

Hello, everyone!

Back to school is here already. If you blinked, you may have missed summer - or at least it feels that way now.

So we charge ahead into fall. New classes and teachers. New fall sports’ seasons. Apple cider and (very soon) pumpkin everything.

Summer businesses brace for the long winter, while winter businesses begin to gear up for their turn. Inventory turns over, and, before you know it we’ll see Christmas decorations in the stores. Time marches on, much too quickly, for all of us.

At the Chamber, fall means Oktoberfest! This year, we celebrate our 25th annual auction - and we’re working to make this event bigger and better than ever with some fun new ideas and the support of our Signature Sponsor, Northwest Bank.

Put it on your calendar for Saturday, October 21st. Stop down to see us at the office and get your tickets. And get ready for an evening of food, fun, and fantastic auction items! (And, if you’re one of those folks already looking ahead to Christmas...the parade is scheduled for Friday, December 1st. Anyone have a sleigh Santa can borrow?)

Top: Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc. held their 2nd annual Family Picnic and Car Show at the end of July - this year with a Vegas theme. Middle: Thanks to the United Way of the Bradford Area for hosting August’s Business After Hours, sponsored by and held at Northwest Bank on Main Street. CJ Spirits served up some delicious cocktails, the UWBA board - serving as this year’s campaign co-chairs - all dressed the part in their campaign shirts, and guests enjoyed the networking and hors d’oeuvres. Bottom: It was a beautiful day for August’s Lunch in the Square, coordinated by DBBDA and the Main Street Manager, and we hope for more of the same on September 13th! Kudos to Jim Ronan (Guitar Lessons with Jim Ronan) and his student guest for a great performance!

Let’s talk about...Remembering Glen CampbellWith the recent passing of country music star, Glen Campbell, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, Lisa Johnson submitted the article below to The Bradford Era to recap Bradford Ecumenical Home’s time with Glen’s family back in April 2015. “Lisa writes, ‘On behalf of all the individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, family members and caregivers, we are saddened by the passing of inspirational singer Glen Campbell at the age of 81. We were deeply moved by the awareness that Glen and his family offered.’ She shared this photo by Shawn Murray Photography of Glen’s family members and some Ecumenical Home staff. ‘It was an honor to have met Glen’s family and host a reception with his wife, Kim, and musical performance by his children, Shannon and Ashley Campbell, in Bradford in April 2015,’ Lisa stated. ‘Following their meet and greet, a viewing of his documentary, ‘Glen Campbell . . . I’ll Be Me,’ sharing Glen’s extraordinary journey he and his family navigated 151 shows despite the unpredictable nature of Glen’s disease using love, laughter, and music as their medicine.’

Lisa said there will be a limited number of copies of the DVD available at Bradford Ecumenical Home by calling 368-5648. ‘We were so fortunate to know Glen and his incredible family who bravely shared their Alzheimer’s journey with the world,’ said Lisa. ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with them.’ Left to right: Vicki Harris, Bradford Ecumenical Home, Inc. There’s never enough time in the day. To combat that, many of us stay up too late, swig coffee like it was water or guzzle energy drinks like they were air, and we sacrifice downtime for working towards getting that one last thing done before we leave. Many of us bring work home with us and check our emails before our feet hit the floor in the morning. But it shouldn’t always be about working harder. We need to find ways to work smarter. Here are some you may not have thought much about:

Know How Much Time You Spend on Social Media. Seriously. If you’ve struggled to lose weight, you may have lamented that it doesn’t make sense. You eat right and work out, yet the weight remains. It’s not until you start tracking everything that goes into your mouth that you realize what the culprit is. Tiny snacks like grabbing a Hershey’s kiss every time you walk by your co-worker’s desk. A handful of calories doesn’t seem like a big deal but they add up. The same is true of your time on social media sites. According to LearnStuff.com, over 12.2 billion collective hours are being spent browsing on a social network every day. Maybe you’re just watching one video while waiting on someone to go to lunch or before a meeting. But those minutes add up over the course of the day. When you start tracking your time on social, you could discover over the course of 8-10 hours you’ve wasted as much as 30 minutes. That’s 30 minutes you could use doing something much more productive. Even if your job requires you to be on social media, make sure what you’re doing is strategic and not just scanning streams with no direction.

Avail Yourself of Abridged Learning Opportunities in the Community Much of what we know about good business practices and social media features seem to change overnight. You can spend yourday learning everything you need to know about these things 1-2 times a month but that requires first doing the research and then learning the concepts or new features. Is that really an effective use of your time? You need to know the information but you don’t need to be the one to compile it or teach it to yourself. There are people in your community who are already doing that. The small business development center and local universities have sessions on topics that are valuable to you and your business. Best of all, these sessions are usually very reasonably priced. If your time is worth more than $20 an hour, you should look into these options.

Know Yourself When it comes to productivity you are either a to-do list person or an “eat the frog” worker. A to-do list person enjoys checking off completed items on the list. This personality works best when building momentum. Write out a to-do list. Assuming the items have similar deadlines, look for quick wins - tasks you know you can get done quickly. Getting them done in the first part of your day will give you energy because you see a large part of your to-do list getting conquered early on. On the other hand, if you’re a morning person who loses steam in the afternoon, you’ll want to “eat the frog.” “Eating the frog,” often attributed to Mark Twain, advises that if you eat a live frog first thing each morning, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that it’s probably the worst thing you’ll do all day. People who do best “eating the frog” thrive on tackling the day’s hardest items first thing. Figure out which of these personalities you are. Do you love to see change in your to-do list or are you at your most productive first thing and need that energy to tackle the tough stuff? Either way, schedule accordingly. If you are an “eat the frog” type avoid early a.m. meetings - they will eat up your most productive time. If you are a to-do list person, break large tasks into small ones even though it will make your to-do list look longer. Checking off small tasks builds momentum, fueling your energy. Becoming more productive generally doesn’t take sweeping changes. It’s about recognizing the drains on your day and eliminating as many of them as you can. You may not be able to get out of every meeting or meaningless conversation but if you start turning your efforts to working smarter instead of harder, you’ll be able to find small pockets of time in your day and that will help you regain control of it.

3 Ways to Improve Your Productivity at Work

Guten tag! It’s our silver anniversary, and we’re excited to celebrate with you! Planning is underway for our primary fundraising event of the year, Oktoberfest. Our 25th annual public auction event is scheduled for Saturday, October 21st at the St. Bernard Parish Center gymnasium on East Corydon Street. Our members and the community are invited to come and enjoy a night of food and fun among friends and colleagues to help support the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce. We’re making several changes this year to create a more traditional Oktoberfest atmosphere. We’ll have authentic German food served throughout the evening, family-style seating with reserved tables for sponsors at the Silver Sponsor level and above, live entertainment, prizes for the best traditionally dressed Oktoberfest attendees, and more. Festivities and silent auction will begin at 5pm, the live auction will kick off at 7pm, and entertainment and prizes will continue after the live auction until 11pm. Advance ticket prices will be $30 each or $50 for two (at-the-door $35 each) – included are an entrée, side, dessert, and a beverage (beer, soda, or water). Additional a la carte food items and beverage tickets will be available for purchase separately. At this time we invite you to be an event sponsor and/or donate items to help us make the Oktoberfest/ 25th Annual Public Auction our best yet. Sponsorship and items provided will enable this essential Chamber event to be a success and will be recognized in our auction program and other media venues. The enclosed form details benefits of sponsorship. In order for your sponsorship to be included in all advertising as indicated, please return the completed form to our office no later than September 15th. Donated items can be brought to the BACC office, or we can make arrangements to pick them up. The sooner you can let us know what you are donating, the better, as it helps us build our auction packages! Oktoberfest proceeds enable the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce to remain active in the business community. The Chamber helps area businesses and organizations build connections, offers affordable marketing and promotion tools, shares community development and educational resources, and provides savings through affordable health care insurance, business insurance, and energy savings. Danke in advance for your generous support! You are making a commitment to keep the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce a strong and viable organization in our local community. Sincerely, Sincerely,

Kara J. Kennedy John D. Reiser Executive Director Oktoberfest Committee Chair
