Dear Friends,

I will take a different tact this week than an examination of the Sunday Scriptures and turn to some more mundane details of parish life.

Nothing seems to fascinate some people more than the LIGHTS in church….. and exactly how many were out! I wonder how some people had the time to count the bulbs that were out while still concentrating on the liturgy. The lighting system like so many things in today’s world is far more complicated than you think. Because of its complexity, it is not so easy to just change a light bulb. Some background to help you understand is that the lights were designed in such a way that some or many could be out and still we would have good lighting. The lights were only meant to be replaced twice a year because we need to rent a lift to do so.

Our recent challenge of many lights being out occurred because the church is now four years old and we were waiting to spend the money on replacing the bulbs until we made sure a larger electronic issue was fixed. We are looking into replacing the bulbs in the future with more costly but longer lasting LED lights, but it was determined that it was best to wait until a study could be completed so that when we do it, we do it correctly.

So what happened the minute we changed all the down lights you seem fascinated with? Within one day, one went out. So what do I say? STOP worrying about the lights and worry about sharing the light of Christ with others. I have far greater things to worry about! Wow! That felt good getting that off my chest.☺

We wish our departing college and university students good luck as they begin another academic year. Our parish family wishes you well and will keep you in our prayers.

I look forward to seeing many of you next Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. for our Annual Cemetery Sunday Mass. We will remember our loved ones bur ied there and after the Mass, Fr . Rossi and I will bless the graves.

Enjoy these last few days of August and may the Lord continue to bless us as a parish family.

Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!

Perpetual Adoration

If the Pope himself gave you a special invitation to visit

him in the Vatican, this honor would be nothing in

comparison to the honor and dignity that Jesus himself

bestows upon you with the invitation of spending one hour

with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. "The divine Eucharist

bestows upon the Christian people the incomparable

dignity." (Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei)

If you have never visited our Adoration Chapel, please

avail yourself of this special place that we are so lucky to

have day and night at our parish.

Do you already visit? Our chapel has a steady stream of

visitors both day and night. However, there are many hours

without a committed adorer, and almost all hours are in

need of co-adorers.

Please prayerfully consider committing to an hour

or sign up to be a co-adorer.

In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah during a time of political dissolution and moral decline. The prophet had warned of God’s judgment against people for the feelings of self-importance they found in their possessions, and condemned them for various forms of economic injustice such as exploiting the poor and immigrants. Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as compelling today as it was in the time of the kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer justice and compassion toward others. Be honest in all your dealings. And remember to observe the day of the Lord.

Feed the Hungry: Lend a hand to help Safe Harbor

On the first Friday of every month, St. Joseph parishioners prepare, deliver, and serve dinner to 25 women residents at Safe Harbor in West Chester. Would you like to be part of this fulfilling – and needed – outreach?

We need volunteers to: • Prepare one of the components of the meal – a main

dish, a vegetable, a starch, a salad, and a dessert. • Be part of the team that delivers and serves the meal.

We arrive at Safe Harbor at 4 p.m., serve between 4:30 and 5 p.m., then go home.

Dorothy Day Retreat This unique mid-week retreat for men and women will be held September 26-28 at Malvern Retreat House. It will offer an experience of the Benedictine spirituality of Dorothy Day, who in her life integrated her love of God, neighbor, and nature. Retreatants will experience this integration through spiritual talks, quiet time, and some light hands-on work (if interested - spinning wool fleece into yarn) - the “ora et labora” of St. Benedict. The themes of the retreat include simplicity of life, hospitality, and appreciation for God’s creation. Participants will be given resources for incorporating Benedictine spirituality into their busy lives. For more information or to register, please visit malvernretreat.com or call 610-644-0400.
