The Audubon Bird Mural Project The Friends’ First Virtual “Bus Trip” September 30, 10:00 AM Join the Friends as we ZOOM through our first virtual Bus Trip. We will be “traveling” to Harlem to view The Audubon Bird Mural Project. This is an impressive effort to create murals of over 300 North American birds. These murals are in the Harlem neighborhood of Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights, where John James Audubon lived the last ten years of his life. The artworks range from lovely panels that fill in a former window to spectacular murals covering the entire side of a building. We will see about 40 murals, plus Audubon’s grave site, in a slide presentation with live commentary. There will be time afterwards for questions and answers.

LEIGH HALLINGBY will be our virtual tour guide.

Leigh has long been passionate about exploring New York City’s vast array of neighborhoods on foot. After a long and rewarding career as a non-profit librarian (in 2017, Leigh was inducted into the Special Libraries Association Hall of Fame), Leigh now loves being a tour guide. She has gone on hundreds of guided walking tours. For her, there is always an unfamiliar street or neighborhood to see and lots more to learn! But, with the pandemic “clipping her wings”, Leigh has created a tour of the Audubon Mural Project that can be presented online. The virtual tour lasts about an hour, and there will be time at the end for questions.
