Formation of the Atmosphere

• 5 billion years ago – no atmosphere• Volcanic eruptions released gases & UV

radiation levels v. high – no life forms.• Early atmosphere 5-4.5 billion yrs BP

– Water vapour 80%– Carbon dioxide 12%– Sulphur dioxide 7%– Nitrogen 1% & other trace gases

• UV radiation reduced and early organisms used CO2 and released O2 – atmosphere slowly developed that could support plant and animal life.
