COMPOSITION OF THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE
THE LAYERS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
TROPOSPHERETROPOSPHERE
• TROPO – TURNING AND CHANGING
• LAYER IN WHICH WE LIVE• RAIN, SNOW, AND CLOUDS
ARE FOUND IN THIS LAYER• LOWEST LAYER• CONTAINS 90% OF THE
ATMOSPHERE’S TOTAL MASS
STRATOSPHERESTRATOSPHERE
• STRATO MEANS LAYER• THE GASES DO NOT MIX• IT CONTAINS THE OZONE
LAYER
MESOSPHERE
• MESO MEANS MIDDLE
• THE MIDDLE LAYER
• THE COLDEST LAYER
THERMOSPHERE
• THERM MEANS HEAT
• UPPERMOST LAYER• IT IS NAMED FOR
ITS HIGH TEMPERATURES
IONOSPHERE• AN AREA LOCATED IN THE UPPER MESOPHERE• AND LOWER THERMOSPHERE• THIS PART OF THE ATOMOSPHERE CONTAINS IONS• IONS ARE ELECTRICALLY CHARGED PARTICLES
THE EXOSPHERETHIS IS OUTER SPACE

Order the Atmosphere’s Layers!• If you sit by someone in your row, you make work
with them quietly.• Take the paperclip off your stack.• Find “Earth’s Surface” and place it at the bottom of
your desk• Then find “Outer Space” and place it at the top of
your desk.• Order the layers of the atmosphere, from the closest
to the Earth’s surface, to the closest to outer space.• Then, match the definitions of the layers with the
layers you have ordered!• When you are finished, quietly raise your hand!
