My fellow anglers and friends,

The month of may will be a busy and exciting month. Malaysians will experience one heck of an exciting general election, of which will be the hardest fought from both sides of thepolitical divide.

Malaysia will not be the only country going through an election this month. The Philippines will also be having the 2013 (midterm) general election on May 13, 2013. So May is an important month and we at The Asian Angler wish all can-didates the best of luck.

We did our first “blind test drive.” We were handed two reels of which were totally blanked (no markings, specs, etc.) and we had to test drive them. Now this is fun because there are certain things that play a part when reviewing a reel that is not built into a reel but affects our judgement nonetheless, and one of these things is the brand.

Every brand has a value and knowing the brand does have an effect to a cer-tain extent on how anyone sees a reel. In all, this is one exciting test drive.

In this issue we also look at Abu Garcia’s new rod from a long established series, Thomas Stroker’s ultra-light jigging rods, baitcasting techniques, and many more.

Have fun this May and remember to make more friends (no matter the politics) and go fish together. Friendship + understanding + unity = a better future.

Thank you for supporting us.

Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

Test Drives

The Blind Test ________By Philemon Foo

I recently test drove a reel that is not in the market yet (although an older model is), does not even have anything printed on it, but will be available in the market very soon. All I was told is that it con-tains seven ball bearings, has a max drag of about 2.5kg to 5kg, and that it will not burn a hole in the pocket. “Great” I said, “let’s bring it to the lab.”

14 15

Page 9: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

By The Looks Of It....

Looking at these two reels now sitting on our lab table, we had a little disagree-ment. My partner, the IT guy is crazy over the blue colored one. He says it looks sleek and sporty, exactly like how he would like his “Alienware Aurora” CPU to look like. For some reason he doesn’t like the red color his CPU came in. The metallic blue would have given him bet-ter motivation to be engaged in some Warcraft gaming for days and nights with-out sleep.

16 17

Page 10: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I on the other hand prefer the green sleek gun metal unit that looks tough and just what a hunter would want.

If I were to choose the cosmetics of a futuristic assault helicopter like the apache; metallic dark green and gun metal grey will be the way to go.

18 19

Page 11: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Smooth Rotations

Be it an assault helicopter or a high-end gaming CPU, smoothness of op-eration is important and reels, we want smoothness in rotations. Without any line we held our chosen reels in one hand and gave the handle a few turns. After a while we swapped reels and did the same thing. Both reels rotate smoothly way above acceptable levels but we both agree that the blue one was smoother.

A smirk appeared on my partners face as if to say 1 -0. Anyway, a bit of clean-ing and oiling did the trick and the green reel was as smooth as the blue.

20 21

Page 12: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Stopping Power

Adding lines to both reels (25lb mono) we test-ed the drag with our trusty drag checker. Again the blue reel did better at maximum drag. It in fact had a slightly stronger drag as compared to what is stated. The green however was slightly below the rate stated.

Well, being prototype reels these results are expected. The finished products should be much closer to what the manufacturer claims.

The blue reel’s drag performed better than claimed.

22 23

Page 13: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

How about smoothness of drag? It is normal for drag smoothness to diminish after a certain weight set-ting.

Both reels performed well. The green didn’t have a problem at all, remaining smooth all the way to the max of which is lower than the blue’s. The blue had a smooth drag to at least 95% of the drag set. This could also mean that should the green reel have the same drag as the blue, it would probably have the same results but who knows?

The green reel’s drag performed slightly below than what was claimed claimed.

24 25

Page 14: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Balancing Act

Turning the handle and feeling the reel as the rotor spins would indicate how well balanced the reels are. Both the green and the blue reels are very well balanced especially since they fall under the category of reels that will not burn a hole in one’s pocket. They are as well bal-anced as higher end reels and this time the green did better. It hardly had a wobble of which is impressive.

26 27

Page 15: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Toughness

These reels are built tough. The muscular (thick) bail wire and solid feel of the reel body says something about its intended use. There is no body flex whatsoever even at the reel foot and stem. I am not sure what they are made off but they are tough. One slight miss is the rotor body of which is softer but then again more than acceptable for this range of reels.

28 29

Hitting the Amazonians

Having done our lab work we decided to test them out with real fishes. We visited two ponds without much luck (no thanks to the rain) and decided to head to the foreign home of the Am-azonians.

As usual the redtail catfishes were obliging. We were pulling them up at a frequency of every 10 to 15 minutes within our hour of fishing. Yes, we had only an hour as our budgets are really tight. Anybody wants to fund us by buying ad-vertising spaces?

Anyway, both reels performed really well with close to silky smoothness, sufficient drag, and with twistless rigid feel of which gives the add-ed confidence that every angler needs when playing a fish.

The Verdict

Well, you cannot have everything high-end at low or even mid range prices and that would be wishful thinking. It will be great to have a reel of which is equivalent to the Shimano Stellas but at 5% of the price. I would be buying a few of them but that will not be happening anytime soon. There is indeed a price to everything.

All that said and done both reels per-formed well. What I really liked about these reels is that they performed well being well balanced, rigid, and smooth; qualities usually found in higher-end reels and above. Yes there are some nitty-grit-ty things that we could pick on but then again so do all reels, even the very high-end ones.

Test Drives

Abu Garcia’s Ultracast rod series is one very long running series that will probably make it into the angler’s history books as one of the longest rod series to be produced. Having such a long running series also speaks volumes about its credibility and proven track record. Why keep a series name if the product of which its name it carries is not good, right?

Abu Garcia will soon be launching the all new Ultracast series rods somewhere in the month of May. We had the opportunity to take the Ultracast rods for a test drive and a test drive we did.

Lab Test

Before putting the Ultracast rods against fish, we gave them some weight training at the gym. As usual the rod had to pump some iron and they all did. With me wearing a motor-cycle helmet and protective eye wear, we allowed the dumb-bell weights (secured to fishing line) to bounce and hang going from 0.5kg to 2.5kg (still below rod’s rating).

After about 45 seconds my back begun to hurt and I had to give up. The rod was still intact. Let me explain this. Hang-ing weights directly to the rod tip and hanging weights to a line and reel of which is secured to the rod is very different. The pressure emitted by the usage of the later method is not stable (constant). It more closely resembles how a fish fights. Automatically the weight feels heavier. Anyway, the Ultracast passed the test with flying colors.

40 41

Page 22: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Backbone Hunting

The Abu Garcia Ultracast rods have a backbone length of about 60% to 70% depending on model, making it ideal for most types of fishing. Being more of a soft plastic angler I prefer a slower action tip and these rods are just great for that. It allows time for the fish to take the bait before feeling that something is amiss.

42 43

Page 23: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Get In The Ring

Pairing it with one of our Test Drive reels we decided to go to some place exotic to do some fishing...errr.... I meant testing. This time we did some bottom fishing using tilapia as bait. It has been some time since I have last done bottom fishing and I must say that I have somewhat for-gotten how relaxing fishing can be. That is what I like about fishing. It can be challenging, stress-ful, wit bashing, and relaxing depending on your mood and, well, education (knowledge and skill).

Anyhow, we were sitting by the side of a pond at night with Hundred Plus in one hand while we talked about gaming consoles when the reel started screaming. I picked up the Abu Garcia Ultracast rod, gave it yank to set the hook, and we were in battle. The Ultracast remained stead-fast with a graceful bent as the fish ran towards the floating aerators. I decided to drop the rod and turn the fish by changing the angle of the force and that did the trick.

44 45

Page 24: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Not long later an Amazonian redtail catfish congratu-lated us for winning the battle. After landing our 5th fish we came to the end of our hour and I must say that the Ultracast rods are indeed performers. They have enough power to help you manage the fish and you know that they have more to give of which gives you the confidence to push it.

46 47

Page 25: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My Opinion

After abusing it (sensibly) and test driving it, I have to say that the Abu Garcia Ultracast rod series will continue to live a very long life. They are not expensive rods yet they perform really well. They are tough and will go the extra mile. They look really good too and I believe will appeal to the younger generation anglers. If you are looking for an everyday workhorse kind of rod, the Ultracast is definitely one to consider.

Thomas Stroker Ultra-light Jigging RodsBy Philemon Foo

Custom Made Performance

Other than fishing, my other passion is cars. I really love cars. Within the car scene there are about three types of enthusiasts. The one that buys a collectible car and keeps it as original as one could possibly keep and in pristine condition. The one that buys a car and turns it into another car by adding and chang-ing parts commonly known as aftermarket parts; also known as customizing. And the one that does both, that would be me if only I had the money.

Customizing fishing rods are a lot cheaper than dab-bling in cars. Should you want to own a fishing rod that is customized just for you, Thomas Stroker would be the place to go. Just how good or reliable are Thomas Stroker rods? Well, this is the trip we put some of them to test and find out for ourselves.

Some of the Thomas Stroker rods that got abused. The at-tention goes to the purple, pink, and dark green with camo handle rods. These are PE 0.5 & PE 1 ultra-light jig rods.

54 55

Page 29: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Rod Bashing In Rompin

Thomas Lee, more fondly known as Un-cle Thomas, is a veteran when it comes to building custom rods. He has many many years of experience iunder his belt both as an angler and a custom rod builder. He is the founder and owner of Thomas Stroker rods.

Many a times I have heard stories of Un-cle Thomas catching big fishes on puny lit-tle outfits and I must add that he is one of those who have inspired me to dive into the extreme realms of sports fishing also known as ultra light fishing. Yet, We have never fished together before until recently al-though knowing each other for many years in fishing forums and tackle shows.

56 57

Page 30: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Recently we headed to Rompin, the Sail-fish Capital of Malaysia, to test drive Thom-as Stroker ultralight PE0.5 & PE 1 micro jig rods. We dropped out micro jigs into the water and started jigging. The rods that I tested felt really light. Such weightlessness allowed me to jig for almost the entire day without feeling like I need a new arm.

Being ultralight rods, jigging the micro jigs felt easy. It was easy to feel the weight of the jig and build up a jigging rhythm.

58 59

Page 31: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Durable Blanks

We were catching fishes like groupers and snappers with our little jigs. None of them sizable enough to give the rods we held in our hands a run for our money. It was after about two hours of jigging that we hooked on to a brute. The brute gave a very strong run bending the rod and stealing a lot of line. The harder the fish pulled the more the rod bent.

Uncle Thomas gave the green-light to re-ally test the durability of the rod. Well, he actually said, “go ahead and try to break the rod.” With that, the drag was tightened but a short while later the line snapped. It could be a mackerel. This happened a few times with lines getting severed and lines bursting mid fight.

We did manage to land a mackerel about an hour after lunch and a few large long toms that gave a pretty interesting fight somewhat like a small sailfish. They are strong fighters and if they were to be as big as the sailfish, they would probably as strong fighters as the sails.

60 61

Page 32: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My Thoughts

Although the fishing wasn’t as good as we have hoped but the rods were put through the test and they stood their ground. They are light weight and don’t tax the angler of much energy. They are sensitive enough to manage micro jigs. They are strong enough to handle forces above what they are meant to handle (they are only PE 0.5 & PE 1 rods).

So should you want to custom make a rod just for you, why not pay Uncle Thomas a visit. He cer-tainly knows a lot about rods. He also knows a lot about fishing. What I like most is that he is brave and willing enough to put his name and reputation on the line of which gives assurance that his rods are of good quality and craftsmanship.

There will be more test in the future and hopefully then we can drive these rods way further beyond its boundaries.

64 65

Page 34: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

As we have discussed in previous issues, fishing lines are not just fish-ing lines. Fishing lines have different characteristics and qualities that can be used to your advantage depend-ing on the type of fishing that you are doing as well as your style of fishing.

Now let us take a look at fluorocar-bon fishing lines. Every angler wants a line that cannot be seen by fish, strong, quiet, and gives good feed-back to the angler (sensitivity). That will have to be the fluorocarbon fish-ing lines. Also not just any fluorocar-bon but 100% fluorocarbon lines.

Knowledge WiseThe Fuss About Fluorocarbon LinesBy Philemon Foo

66 67

Page 35: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Qualities of Fluorocarbon

Almost Invisible Underwater

Fluorocarbon lines have almost the same re-fraction index as water which means that they refract light almost to the same extent as water does. This does not mean that the fish will not be able to see you line, just that it is not as clear as monofilament or super-lines.

Low Stretch

Well, this may or may not be an advantage de-pending on your fishing. Also I have seen some fluorocarbon lines that stretches somewhat like monofilaments do. The difference is that they tend to retain the shape after being stretched. Anyhow, fluorocarbons were earlier made to be low stretch and stiff. Unable to stretch much, fluo-rocarbons give better sensitivity and hook set.

68 69

Page 36: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Fast Sinking

If you need a fast sinking line, fluorocar-bon would be your choice of line. Fluoro-carbon lines are dense, with density simi-lar or higher to that of water. This allows them to sink faster in water.

Doesn’t Absorb Water

Yes, lines such as monofilaments do ab-sorb water. When that happens you lose casting distance as your lines become heavier. Fluorocarbon on the other hand does not absorb water.

Abrasion Resistance

Fluorocarbon especially leaders are known for being resistant to abrasion. They can take abrasion a lot more than monofilament lines can. They are also stiffer that normal monofilament lines.

Some brands also marketed limp or soft fluorocarbon lines but they lose out on the advantages as they have more stretch, less able to handle abrasion, etc.

70 71

Page 37: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Quiet

One of the quietest lines around is the fluorocarbon lines. Someone asked me this recently, “how do fishes hear?” Well, they don’t hear noises the way we do (as far as I know). They feel vibrations via the lateral lines that is located somewhat in the middle of the body. A noisy line is actually not heard but felt.

Less Friction

Fluorocarbon lines are some of the smoothest lines available. Being smooth they produce lesser friction as compared to other types of lines. However, line diameter does have an impact on friction. The higher the friction the greater the vibration.

Weaknesses Of Fluorocarbon

Stiff Line

Being stiff, they make good leaders but not as main lines. Stiff fluorocarbon lines also have good memory which is great if they’re thumb-drives but sadly not es-pecially for spinning reel users. However, do note that these days there are softer fluorocarbon lines available in the market but they are quite “stretchy” and have more monofilament like qualities.

72 73

Page 38: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Weak Knot Strength

Being slippery lines, tying knots on fluo-rocarbon required extra care. You have to ensure that you lubricate the line well while tying your knots as fluorocarbon doesn’t dissipate heat as well as monofilament lines do. There are also people who use superglue to lockdown knots. Not sure if that is good practise but from experience, a well tied knot will last. So, it will be better to just take extra care with your knots.

Invisible To Angler

It is one thing to be almost invisible to fishes but if, like me, your vision is not very good, you will be looking all over the place for your line. Anyhow, there are fluorocar-bon lines that are now visible above water while invisible underwater (well, almost) such as the Berkley Transition fluorocar-bon lines.

74 75

Page 39: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Fluorocarbon Applications

In today’s fishing scene there are fluorocarbon leaders and fluorocarbon mainlines. Fluorocarbon leaders remain stiffer and holds with it most of the original qualities and characteristics of fluorocarbon lines.

Fluorocarbon mainlines on the other hand have gone through a few changes. Some become limp and softer (more monofilament like) and with stretch, some allowing the angler to see it above water while remaining almost unseen by fishes un-derwater, and some with reduced memory.

The best times to use fluorocarbon lines are when:

a. You want your bait or lure to reach the bottom fast.

b. You see fishes around but they tend to shy away from your bait.

c. Currents are fast and you need a line with less friction.

76 77

Page 40: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Application To Fishing

Being almost invisible, fluorocarbon lines are great for bottom fishing with bait. They are also great for casting and play-ing soft plastic baits being as soft plastic itself has some amount of buoyancy. Oth-er applications would be in fly when there is a need for a stiff leader to keep the fly straight.

As for me I generally use fluorocarbon lines as leaders since there are braided lines now with similar characteristics of fluorocarbon lines. I use fluorocarbon leaders because they allow lure (soft baits) to reach the bottom quicker and they take abrasion well.

78 79

Page 41: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Things To Note

However, there are a few things here to note. Since they are almost invisible underwater, it doesn’t mean that you should use larger diame-ter lines. Bringing up the diameter will again allow fishes to sense your line.

Also, although they are good with handling abra-sion, you should always check to ensure that they have not sustained damaged after going through rocks, sticks, logs, etc. They do fray and crack sometimes.

Invisibility depends on the color of the water as well. They may go invisible in clear water but they may not be as effective in waters that have a tint or are unclear. As such line manufacturers have produced tinted or colored fluorocarbon lines of which will be of more suitable use.

Anglers’ Havens

In this issue we went to the Corus Paradise Lagoon Resort. Here there is either a choice of staying at the hotel rooms or you could opt to stay at the apartment. We opted to stay at the apartment as it was a mere RM80.00 a night. So for the budget conscious an-gler and family, this will be a vi-able option.

Page 43: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Apartments

The Corus Paradise Lagoon apartments are indeed a bang for the buck. I booked a one room apartment of which has a room (obviously), a bathroom, hall, kitchen, dining area, and a balcony. The room comes with a queen-size bed and a single day bed of which is great for my child.

84 85

Page 44: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We checked in at 3pm and I proceeded to explore the unit we were given. It came with air-conditioning (that gets quite cold at night), a televi-sion although outdated but it works, a mini-bar, water heat-er, an electric stove, plates, forks, spoons, knives, a pan, bowls, and mugs.

86 87

Page 45: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The unit we were given was clean and really quite comfortable with a view of the sea both from the bedroom and the living room.

It is indeed RM80.00 well spent.

88 89

Page 46: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Things To Do

There are a lot of things for the family to do. First there is the swim-ming pool of which will be a hit with the kids. Then there is the play room where there are video games and you could also rent Sony PS3 games to play with the kids. There is also a tennis court and 2 squash courts (if not mistaken) but I did not see them as I did not intend to work myself out so hard.

At the beach you could rent jet-skis, go for banana boat rides, and pick shells but all at your own risk. There is a reason why I say “all at your own risk.” I will explain later.

90 91

Page 47: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

One of my favourite things to do is to take my kid to the beach during the low tides to check out pools of water with trapped fishes, crabs, prawns, etc. in them. We would net them, put them in a small tiny aquarium, allowing her to admire the catch and learn about them, and then release them before heading back up.

Fish & shells in a bucket.

92 93

Page 48: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

You could bring along a kite or visit the Mr DIY at the new Port Dickson Waterfront (next to where the store is) and buy a large kite for below RM11.00 (you could get a reason-ably big kite for below RM5.00) and take your kids kite flying at the Bayu Beach.

There is a guy selling kites at the Waterfront and should you be feel-ing a bit charitable, you could buy the same kites that are sold at the Mr DIY shop but at a higher price. Good to be charitable.

94 95

Page 49: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

You could take a drive to the Military Museum nearby (quite nice really), or go to Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse for some bird watching or to simply take in the beauty of Mother Nature. Who knows you may spot a saltwater crocodile or two.

There is also a museum and an old fort in Lukut which can be interesting for the history buffs.

Wetting Lines

Being anglers there is this need to wet our lines and it can be done right at the Corus Paradise Lagoon Resort’s beach. Whitings and other small fishes are the norm. There are also stingrays and other fishes such as barracudas if your timing is right. There are big fishes in Port Dickson but perhaps on a trip strictly for fish-ing buddies as it would require the use of a boat and a few hours.

Recommended Tackle

Ultra-light to light tackle will give you lots of fun cou-pled with lines of about 2lb to 4lb, tiny hooks, small sinker, and a bit of prawns or squid as bait. What’s more fun is that you could get your kids to fish as well. It will be a nice place to teach them catch and release.

Word Of Caution

Remember that I mentioned earlier these words, “at your own risk?” Well, the beaches in Port Dickson are seriously in need of some cleaning. Well, not all of them but the one where the Corus Paradise Lagoon Resort sits on definitely needs it. It is really dirty littered with rubbish and lots of broken bottles. We would normally walk barefooted on the beach but not this.

A better beach to bring the family too is actually the Bayu Beach where the Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club and The Bayu Beach Resort are located. It is cleaner and the sand is a lot nicer. The water quality is also not too bad.

Dirty beach with a lot of broken glass at Corus Paradise Lagoon Resort.

Page 53: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Another interesting thing about Port Dickson is that there are saltwater crocodiles of which have been spotted at the Tan-jung Tuan Lighthouse area. The Picture on the left (top) was taken by a member of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) dur-ing one of his raptor watching trips.

Click on the link to read the report:

Another interesting report is that of a carcass that was found at Pantai Ixora, Tanjung Agas. This carcass is that of a rath-er huge saltwater crocodile (picture on the left, bottom).

Malaysia&sec=Dalam_Negeri&pg=dn_17.htm

These two articles make for an interesting read. It also makes visiting Port Dickson more exciting as I will be spend-ing more time scouting the area for wild life and who knows, we may land one on rod and line.

104 105

Page 54: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My Thoughts

In general the apartment blocks are quite tired and are in need of some new paint but the apartment units are okay. Well, at least the one I got is okay. I feel that RM80.00 a night for the apartment is a good deal. We stayed for three nights and I have no complains. Again, because of the low price and amenities offered, I am willing to close an eye of the little imperfec-tions that the apartment has.

However, if your objective of going to Port Dickson is to spend long hours at the beach, then drive to another beach such as Bayu Beach where the sand is better and the, beach cleaner. It is also not far away. Oh yes, there seems to be a prob-lem with room touts hanging around park-ing areas in Port Dickson. Just pay no at-tention to them.

All in all Port Dickson still has a lot of fun to offer. I will write more in the future. Mean-while, take time off and explore Port Dick-son.

Skill Enhancers

Advanced Baitcasting Part V: Flipping By Philemon Foo

Last issue we learn how pitching is done. Now we take a look at some-thing quite similar to pitching but for close proximity fishing. This method of casting is called “flipping.”

Flipping is a great way to send you lure quietly into a fishing zone. Imagine seeing a huge head of a snakehead enjoying the sun rays at an opening in a patch of lilies. The best way to get your lure into the little opening is to “flip” it in. This allows you to drop your lure into the zone quietly, perhaps imitating a frog taking a leap of faith, right in front, and hopefully into the mouth of the snakehead.

108 109

Page 56: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure / Casting Plugswings in and out like a pendulum.

Hand holding linefrom the reel.

110 111

Page 57: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Mechanics Of Flipping

Flipping uses a pendulum to send the lure or bait out. It is very similar to pitching. The difference is is what you do with your other hand that is not holding and managing the rod & reel. You basically move the rod tip up to bring the lure or bait towards you and down again allowing it to drop into the fishing zone. It is re-ally as simple as that.

Allow line to slide through finger and move hand towards the reel as the lure / plug shoots out.

112 113

Page 58: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure swinging out.

The Practise

Hold your rod in front of you with it pointing for-ward at about 45 degrees angle. Press down the thumbar allowing the casting plug to drop to about the same length of line from your rod tip to the reel. Engage the thumbar and swing the plug in and out by bringing your rod tip up and down, creating a pendulum. Notice that while the plug is on its way towards you and you raise the rod tip, the speed of the plug going out or forward away from you increases.

114 115

Page 59: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Putting It To Work

Before actually doing the “flip,” I assume that you are familiar with the baitcasting reel and have good spool control. Before you cast, set the tension of your drag. Note that if you are casting into opening in weeds that having too light a drag may cause you to lose the fish as it runs right into the snag. You may want to use heavier lines and a tighter drag setting. If you are cast-ing into open water a lighter setting make sense.

116 117

Page 60: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Step One

Point the rod tip towards the ground allowing the casting plug to rest on the ground. Next, press down the thumbar of your baitcasting reel and strip off about two arms length (depending on the length of your rod) of line directly off the spool. With your free hand hold the line that you have just stripped.

Strip line with this hand and in this case the left hand.

118 119

Page 61: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure Coming inwards towards the angler.

Step Two

Bring your rod tip upwards at about a 45 degree angle in front of you. As you do so bring the hand that is holding the stripped line towards the side of you. The plug should be hanging freely. Ensure that it is not longer than the length of your rod tip to your reel.

120 121

Page 62: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure about to move outwards ready for the cast.

Step Three

Bring the rod tip higher upwards allowing the plug to swing back-wards towards you and as it is on its way towards you, point the rod tip down and give it a gentle flick to send the plug out (as in the prac-tise section). As your plug glides out, it will be taking the lines that you have in your other hand with it. Allow the line in your other hand to slide through your finger and as you do that, move that hand to-wards the reel. Allow enough line slack thus allowing the lure or bait to reach the bottom.

122 123

Page 63: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lure has shot out into the water.

124 125

Page 64: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Step Four

Twitch your or jig your lure or bait and hope that the fish is willing to take your offering. If nothing happens bring back the lure by bringing your rod up and the hand holding the line back to your side. Then do the flip again.

That is basically how flipping is done. Remember that flip-ping is not for long casting distance but for close proxim-ity fishing. The focus is on ac-curacy and a quiet entrance.

Sporting Fishes

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) / SiakapBy Philemon Foo

Barramundi also known as the Asian seabass is one of the game fishes that anglers sort after. They are strong fishes that are challenging to catch providing the angler with thrilling powerful runs and acrobatic leaps when hooked. They are also equipped with razor sharp gills that would easily cut through leaders and fishing lines as well as the human skin when caught. All these make the barramundi a challenging opponent and one that must be handled with care.

A Place To Call Home

Barramundis call coastal waters, estuaries, mangroves, creeks, lagoons, and rivers home. They usually hangout around submerged logs and various other underwater structures or rather, safe havens as well as a pace to am-bush prey. Males will move downriver to meet females and there they spawn. They are also caught in freshwaters since being introduced to Lakes the like of Lake Kenyir many years ago.

128 129

Page 66: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

“Freshwater barramundis” are not new. They have been introduced into freshwater impound-ments such as reservoirs in Australia many years ago for recreational fishing. They are popular with anglers and the norm is to practise catch and release. However, access and fishing in these areas seem to have been limited these days with laws barring entry into these dams and reser-voirs. A further check is needed to confirm if it covers all dams and reservoirs in Australia or se-lected ones.

In Malaysia, Thailand, etc. many “pay-ponds” are being constantly stocked with barramundis of which are commercially bred, making them one of the staple sports fishes around for anglers to play with. Although they do not fight as hard as the wild ones do, they are easier to catch and provide trills to those without the benefit of time to explore wild estuaries and rivers.

130 131

Page 67: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Knight In Shining Armor

Barramundis are like knights in shining ar-mour with shiny silver scales. These scales are tough and they do act like armour. However, these armours (scales) may lose some whine and become darker depend-ing on their environments. Unfortunately no amounts of polish will bring back the shine.

A Change Of Sex

Barramundis mature as males and when they reach a certain size they become fe-males. Most large specimens are females and thus it is highly recommended to prac-tise catch and release for any specimens larger than 4kg as they may contain eggs of which will fuel our angling needs in the fu-ture.

132 133

Page 68: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Food For Thought

Barramundis enjoy a diet of crustaceans such as prawns, molluscs, and smaller fish. Juvenile barra-mundis also take aquatic insects. They are carnivores with a diet made up mainly of meat but we have not heard any of them dying of heart disease and choles-terol problems.

Fishing Barramundis

Live baits mainly prawn and fish, as well as whole dead prawns (with and without the shell) are the norms in “pay-ponds” should you be unfortunate to not have time to go play in the wild. The wild ones are definitely better fighters and they readily take lures, spoons, and soft plastic baits of which are used mainly

134 135

Page 69: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Recommended Tackle

Being hard fighters the tackle recommended would be a medium weighted setup. Of course there is no right and wrong in tackle choice as some anglers prefer to go light while some prefer to go the way of the “bull,” full on tug of war style. The recommended tackle herein is for those who intend to fish them at ”pay-ponds” and at the wild not including those in Kenyir.Rods

Spinning or casting, medium to medium heavy, fast tip action for hard lure users, and slower tip action for soft bait users.

Mainlines

Super-lines (braided or fused) or monofilaments but my recommenda-tion will be to go with super-lines. Recommended poundage 15lb to 30lb depending on the area fished at and known average size.

Leader

My recommendation will be to go with Fluorocarbon leaders of 40lb upwards. The reason for this is the ability of the barramundi to slice through the leader with its razor sharp gills. You can go with lower poundage leaders but the risk of losing the fish will be higher.

Do give barramundi fishing a try. They are good fighters and will give you a run for your money. If fishing wild barramundis, do remember to practise catch and release for larger specimens of 4kg and over as they may contain eggs. Anyhow, do practise bag limits as well to en-sure sustainability of this sports fish species.

Coarse Fishing With The Guv’nor : The European PoleBy Tengku Izzudin

In the previous article we looked at pole floats, their basic design, body shape and material all have a role to play to suit different fishing conditions.

So now let’s look at the pole itself. Ba-sically the core design or shape is the same from one pole or the other. What differs them are their characteristics and the materials used. These normal-ly can only be seen or felt when fishing with or when handling a pole. One can see the markings on the outside, but traits such as weight, rigidity, balance and strength are ‘invisible’, but these are the things that set the poles (and their prices) apart.

138 139

Page 71: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

One can easily get confused with some markings that says ‘Pole’ on some lo-cally available ‘poles’. Loosely, I define the European pole as a long tapered carbon rod (~9-16 metres) made out of carbon with different sections attached together and a length of elastic in the top sections. The pole is fished with a fixed length of line without a reel.

Our locally available ‘poles’ would be called a ‘whip’; shorter in length (~typi-cally 3-5 metres) and without any elastic inside.

140 141

Page 72: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The elastic is a very important component in the pole as it helps in playing the fish such that even largish fish up to 10-15 lbs can be landed where a whip will struggle with such a size. Think of the elastic as an ‘automatic drag’ system that help you play the fish and re-ducing the chance of breaking your line.

142 143

Page 73: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The elastic comes in different rat-ings, typically 1-20, the higher number indicates a stronger and thicker elastic. The pole itself will have a maximum elastic rating specified by the manufacturer. My first pole was a Sensas roach pole, rated to a no6 elastic and 11m at full length. While it’s ok for ‘silver’ fish, typically up to 2 lbs, I would struggle with anything bigger. In the mid 90s, pole manufacturers started to come up with carp poles that can hold no18 or no20 elastic, perfect for bigger stamps of fish.

144 145

Page 74: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Pole fishing is the favourite method of coarse fishing in the UK and also in many parts of Europe. Why is this? I would say that the advantages of us-ing a pole lies in its accuracy, better control and hence better presentation of baits and rigs. What could be more simple than to just place your bait as close as possible to fish holding fea-tures? Having almost a direct contact with the fish also results with more fish landed.

146 147

Page 75: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Strange you say? Not common? You’ll be surprised that names such as Shimano and Daiwa produce some of the best poles in the market. Of course you have the dedicated pole / coarse fishing manufacturers such as Garbolino, Maver, Preston In-novations, Map and the like with a full range of poles and accessories.

148 149

Page 76: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Although I admit the fishing style is very differ-ent, it’s a very aggressive and pro-active ap-proach to fishing, not recommended for lazy anglers!

Availability? Not marketed locally, yet. Unless you want to order direct from the UK, its possi-ble but be prepared to pay a premium for ship-ping and get taxed by our customs.

150 151

Page 77: The Asian Angler - May 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Cost? Well here’s the tricky bit. One can pay £20 for a starter kit or even £3000 for a top of the range pole! But you do get what you pay for which is a good, strong, rigid and light piece of carbon that will provide you with many hours of fishing pleasure.

152 153

Berkley (Pure Fishing Ma-laysia) recently did a fishing competition styled event called Berkley ‘Fish With Us’ at the Taylors Univer-sity Lakeside Campus. The event was aimed at raising awareness on the effective-ness of soft plastic baits especially proven baits by Berkley.
