himano Scorpion DCy Philemon Foo I have heard about the Shim

no Scorpion DC. In fact I haalso used the Shimano Scopion DC but never long enouto get intimate.

So far it has been an okay r

to me and I always nd mysrunning back to my favourite

    Abu Garcia reels.

I have good reasons to do sI dont own those reels and tried them out because frienthat I shed with encourageme to give it a try and I alwaget a bit worried if anything longing to someone else weto go wrong in my hands.

Lines changed and ready to hit

    the ponds.

Two Weeks With The Scorpion DC

have written emails to a few tackle distributors to test drive andeature their products but most remain quiet and thus I asked forelp from a close angling buddy of mine and he was more thanappy to let me have a go with his reels. So I decided to test driveis Scorpion DC.

he rst thing I did was to have the lines changed to my own liness I did not want to lose any line belonging to my friend. Then Iaired the reel to my favourite casting rod, and secured a castinglug to the line. Now the fun begins.

The Shimano Scorpion DC is an easy reel to cast and it is because of the DC

    Technology.

    Easy Caster

I take the setup out to the playground and started to sh on dry landSome kids playing nearby walked up to me and one of them askeduncle nak tangkap apa? (Translated to uncle, what are you catching?). That was a funny experience.

The Shimano Scorpion DC is an easy reel to cast with. It is one ofthose reels that are very forgiving. It is like driving an automatic carJust put the gear in D, step on the accelerator, and you are on youway.

The Scorpion DC felt just like that. Just choose the right setting of

which is based on line type, press down the thumbar, and cast. Thelikelihood of an overrun is almost none existent. It is a reel that begners to baitcasting, will nd easy to learn with. Just set the reel righand cast. The DC thingy inside will do the rest of the work.

Casting the Scorpion DC is also quite addictive as one tries to pushthe reel further and further. Yes it can and will reach a point where isurrenders but then again that applies to all reels.

So What The Heck Is DC

DC is actually short for Digital Controof which is like a little computer sittininside the reel. This little computer dnot have batteries and the power actually comes when the spool rotatessomewhat like how a dynamo giveselectricity to a lamp.

The DC braking system is pre pro-

grammed to allow the spool to spin amaximum speeds before engaging tbrakes and it also provides control bapplying the brake forces at differenintervals during the cast. This wouldexplain why sometimes during the caan overrun seems to be building up then somehow the reel xes that.

The DC feature was previously available at higher end reels and only re-cently made available in the mid ranreels.

    * For more information on the DC brakinsystem, stay tuned for January 2013 is-sue of The Asian Angler where we discuMagnetic Braking Systems as well as thDC.

    Real Time Test

To see how the Shimano Scorpion DCperformed in the real world of shingI headed down to my favourite hauntwhere catching sh is almost guaran-teed.

I cast out the bait and in a few minutes, was onto a sh. The sh took the linefor a run and the drag jumped in to doits job. The drag performed smoothlyand well. No jerking movements werefelt as I allowed the sh to run.

When the sh came to a halt I tightenthe drag bit by bit and slowly played thesh allowing it a few more short runs.

At the end of the ght I reeled the shtowards the landing net with relativeease.

After a few more shes I allowed theShimano Scorpion DC some rest whileI tested out other reels.

:1 Gear Ratio seems to have lost its limelight to the two alphabets

    ove it, DC.

    9/77

    My Thoughts

All in all the Shimano Scorpion DC per-formed well. The drag is smooth and is

just enough to help you play and/or contmost of our freshwater shes (just as lonas youre not hooked to a giant tomanhoming in on structures).

The reel cast well too and with that Imeant the DCs control of the spool; realminimizes overruns. The down part will b

the casting distance which I felt to be notas good but still acceptable.

The Shimano Scorpion DC makes learn-ing baitcasting easier if one is willing tospend that kind of money. However, learing on the DC system may hamper onescasting ability when one needs to casts onon DC reels.

So my take would be this, it makes a gooreel to acquaint one to baitcasting (if onehas a bigger budget) but one should alsouse none DC reels to better ones castinskills.

So, will I buy one? Indeed I will.

research this point please. What we know is that the DC is sealed in

d is waterproof. What we cannot conrm is that since the Malaysian

ather is hot and humid, there are claims that condensation can hap-

n and it does have an effect on the DC board.

Abu Garcia Revo SX 3y Philemon Foo

he Abu Garcia Revo reels are built tough but tough is neverough. Anglers always want more; more features, weight reduction,d good looks. To constantly meet with the demands of anglers thegineering team too has to be tough.

    Lighter Yet Powerful

The new Abu Garcia Revo SX is lighter with a 2oz. reduction toits weight and comes in a lower prole as compared to previougeneration Revos. This gives us a better grip and feel while shing with it and the lighter weight simply means less tiring arms one is supersensitive towards weight.

The D2 (generation 2 Duragear system) gear system gives bet

ter this Revo SX reel better cranking power thus shifting the bawith the brutes over to the anglers side. The D2 gears are biggand tougher yet somehow they managed to reduce the weight the Revo SX. That brings us now to the side plates where somof the weight reduction took place, by using C6 carbon materia

Yes, new looks, lower prole, more powerful gear, etc. are allgood features and function but how will it fair on the water.

    Casting Test

efore heading to water, I did a few casts on land and it cast well.he Magtrax Brake System (magnetic brakes) worked its magicnd casting was easy and smooth (note: the reel is relatively newt time of test). The feel of the spool spinning felt silk like and it wasjoy to cast. The new Revo S also felt great in my hands being

ower in prole and that somehow created a feel of having betterondence in the cast.

    Revo S Vs. Red Tails

I think I am visiting the Exotic Pond a little too often. The reason isbecause the shes there have always been obliging in helping metest equipment. Anyway, I walked to my favourite hut and use bai(not casting any lures) of which is effective at catching sh, andcast out to where I normally cast.

Within 15 minutes I was onto a sh. The drag performed well andfor this test I actually went brute vs. brute as I am familiar withthe capabilities of the Revo reels, and as expected the drag heldon. With the drag almost maxed up (max drag is about 10kg, Ishould be at about 9 kg), I could hear the 20lb line crying for helpwith the tension placed on it and the rod, while the muscles in myright forearm began to ache. The sh still took out line but the ghwas rather short lived and up came a lively red tail catsh.

rmally do not sh that way but Iught, What the heck, lets just do it,there you have it, the signature ofo reels, being tough and with powerful

g, shining forth its glory. Even the guyhelped me net the sh commended

    he strength of the reel.

    So What Do I Think

Looks wise I would say that the new Abu Garcia Revo SX doesnstand out. It looks like many other reels available in the markwith the exception of having a lower prole and bigger gear boHowever, looks alone doesnt help catch sh. Looks catch aglers and what is more important is the performance.

Performance is where the new Revo SX stands out. Being lowin prole I feel that I have better control over the reel of whic

provides for better condence during the cast and while plaing the sh. On top of that the, powerful drag has stoppin

When it comes to casting I would say that it cast well, notexceptional but well. The magnetic brakes worked well anddistance wise, good. The silky like smoothness of the spooas it rotates during the cast is something else altogether anfor that it gains extra points.

omas Stroker rod in action. Powerful brutes are no match to

    Thomas Stroker rod.

Most golfers know that to be good in their game they need thebest clubs, and the best clubs cannot be bought off the shelves.Yes you can pay loads of money for good branded clubs but theseclubs may not suit you best. They are made for golfers in general. The best clubs are custom made for a particular golfer.

When it comes to shing, one of the oldest and most experiencecustom rod builders is Thomas Lee the founder and owner ofThomas Stroker Rods. Thomas Lee has vast experience in shingspending many years battling brutes out at sea. Building Rods Since 1976

Thomas Stroker has been building quality rods since 1976. Ev-ery angler wants a rod that is tough, light, slim, and with gooddesigns. Thomas Stroker rods are built based on these principlesusing high quality material blended in with good design.

Some of the materials used are:

Carbon Composite Blanks ensure that the angler benets froma good strong backbone and to bring the weight of the rods down.A lighter rod means conservation of energy. Conservation of ener-gy means more energy to ght the sh. Have more energy meansthat you get to sh longer. Why ght the weight of the rod whenyou should be ghting your trophy sh?

Fuji Components are some of the best components made forshing. Every angler knows that Fuji makes the best componentsin shing and when you are on to a brute you want to ensure thatthe components on your rod is up to the ght as well as you are.Why risk losing your trophy sh because of component failure?

ALPS Reel Seats. A reel seat is not just something a reel sits on.A reel seat also adds on to the cosmetics of the rod. ALPS dontjust make quality reel seats. They make quality reel seats thatlook good of which brings up the value of your shing rod. Justlike a masterpiece of art being perfect in every way, so shouldyour shing rod be; perfect completely.

Special spacers. Spacers can be used just for aesthetic purpos-s or they can add functional value to a rod. Spacers used to add

unctional value actually helps create a better rod. Here at Thom-s Stroker, function stands above aesthetics.

High quality gimbals. When you are ghting a brute out at sea,

verything counts. Thomas Stroker rods are built using high qual-y gimbals to ensure that nothing gives way including whats sup-orting your rod in your ghting belt.

High Quality EVA grip. Grip is very important. Having a looserip actually forces you to use more energy and strength whileou ght the sh. Thomas Stroker rods are built high quality EVAf which reduces slipping giving you a good grip when you most

    Leave Nothing To Chance

When it comes to shing rods, Thomas Stroker leaves nothing tochance. Every detail counts. Rod building is not just building a rodthat catches sh. Rod building is creating a masterpiece that iscustom made just for you and your type of shing.

    SKILL ENHANCERS

Baitcasting Basics Part IIIBy Philemon Foo

Having good control over your reel is

extremely crucial. The best way to do

so is to train your thumb and thus bu

muscle memory. The only way to do

    to keep practising.

In parts I and II we looked at thethings needed for baitcasting, seting up your baitcasting reel, howcast a baitcasting reel, and we altouched a little bit on brakes.

Before we go into the advanced

baitcasting techniques, it is impotant for you to be able to controlyour baitcasting reel well and I canot emphasize this point enoughThere are a few things you can dand with do I really mean practisPractise makes perfect if not bett

  • 7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - December 2012 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

    21/77

    Practice Feathering TheSpool

It is important to be able to featherthe spool. Feathering the spoolsimply means to have your thumblightly on the spool as it rotates. This helps you to control your castas well as the ight of your lure (toa certain extent).

    Practising spool feathering will

help you to build up motor or mus-cle memory so that spool controlbecomes second nature and youdont have to think about it everytime you cast.

eather the spool by placing your thumb lightly over the spool as the

nker, lure, or casting plug (whatever you are using to practise with)

rops to the bottom. This picture show thumb position.

  • 7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - December 2012 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

    22/77

What you will have to do is to loosthe spool control and allow the pluto drop downwards freely.

Stop the spool with your thumb jusbefore the plug hits the ground. Noreel it up and allow the plug to droagain but from now on place yourthumb lightly on the spool as theplug drops.

Feel the line move as the plugdrops. Always stop the spool beforthe plug touches the ground. Keeprepeating this exercise.

Do this exercise as frequent as posible until it becomes second natuand you can do it without thinking.

iew from a different angle. A comfortable grip on your reel and

    od is very important.

  • 7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - December 2012 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

    23/77

Palm view. There is no right and wrong but my most comfortable

grip is with the reel seat trigger resting inbetween my middle and

thrid nger. Test and nd your prefered grip.

    Accuracy Casting

Practicing accuracy casting is actually an execise that makes practising casting fun. Simplcasting can become boring but it is importanfor you to keep practising. To add some funinto your practise, place a target somewhereand try to hit it.

You could use a bucket or a box and try yourbest to cast into it. As you get better, increasthe distance between the target and you. Youcan also decrease the size of your target; safrom a bucket to a bowl.

This exercise has two benets. One is that yoget used to casting and casting will becomesecond nature. Two is that your accuracy im-proves and you will be able to control your cabetter.

    Practice Practice Practice

When you are free, go to an empty eld andpractice casting. Look for things to cast at lika tin can, a box, a chair, etc. Keep practic-ing and soon you will be casting between trestumps, under roots, and into sh holes.

    Till then, happy casting.

he Fuss About Brakes Part I:

    entrifugal Brakes

    Philemon Foo

Centrifugal brakes found in Abu Garcia C4

    reels.

Brakes, the word that has many an agler confused. What about non-anglerLast issue I wrote an article where I totwo of my friends who have never shbefore in their entire lives to Rompin tsh the sailsh.

One of them did ask in a somewhat su

prised manner, what the breaks werefor. Is it used to stop the sh from swming?

There seems to be this confusion be-tween drag and brakes. Before I moveon, allow me to explain generally whathey are.

The drag is used to add pressure to thsh and yes, the phrase or questionIs, is used to stop the sh (without thwords from swimming) becomes a tinbit more relevant here. The objective oadding pressure to the sh is to tire it

    out.

ntrifugal Brakes of an old Ambassadeur Reel. Noticed that it has

    r brake pins and blocks.

Brakes on the other hand actually helpyou with spool control. It actually appliepressure on the spool instead of the shusing forces known to science and an-glers as centrifugal forces and magneticforces. Oh yes, and then there is the DC(Digital Control) Braking System by Shi-mano that uses a computer to control thspool.

The three common braking systemsin baitcasting reels are the centrifugalbrakes, the magnetic brakes, and thespool control (functions as one).

    Centrifugal Brakes

The centrifugal braking system uses thecentrifugal forces to help you gain bettecontrol of the spool during your cast. Stdents of science especially those speciaizing in physics will know what I am talking about and for the rest of us there isalways Wikipedia. Here is what Wikipedsays the centrifugal force is.

    * Centrifugal force is the apparent out-ward force that draws a rotating bodyaway from the center of rotation. It iscaused by the inertia of the body as thebodys path is continually redirected.

ead of ropes, imagine the blades of this helicopter. The faster the

des turn the higher the forces pushing outwards.

To help you understand better what you cdo is to take a piece of rope and at one enof it tie a piece of weight. Hold the other eof the rope and start swinging the weight a circular motion. The faster you spin theharder the force of the weight pushing outwards. This force is the centrifugal force.

Associating that to the centrifugal brakes a baitcasting reel, the faster the spool spinthe harder the brake pins push outwards owhich means the higher the centrifugal foes applied. It is this force that helps you tocontrol the spool.

The centrifugal braking systems comes indifferent names and looks such as the PitCentrifugal Brake System and the IVCBBrake System used by Abu Garcia Revoreels, SVS Braking System by Shimano, Fing Arm Braking System by Ryobi, and the

ACS Cast Control System used by Quan-tum.

CB-4 a new technology centrifugal braking system that is more con-

ient to use where you do not have to remove the side plate to ad-

your brakes. A similar system is the Ryobi Flying Arm.

    Applied To Fishing

The centrifugal brakes help you control the spoolup to about 70% (average) of the cast. This meansthat from the start of your cast to about 70% of it, tcentrifugal forces are in use and as the spool slowdown; the centrifugal forces become lighter till theyhave no more effect on the spool.

    Setting The Centrifugal Brakes

Some reels require you to remove the side plate oyour reel (NOT the one where the handle is) andsome reels do not, such as the Abu Garcia RevoMGX.

Most reels will have a centrifugal brake system thalooks like a star. Each point (or arm) of the star cotains a brake block. Pushing these blocks outwardengages them. Pushing the blocks inwards disen-gages them. The more blocks engaged the higherthe centrifugal forces.

Let us go back to the illustration earlier with a rope and a weight. Imaine adding another rope and weight. Now spinning two ropes andweights is a circular motion adds more centrifugal forces to your armsand you may feel the need to use more effort. The more ropes andweights added, the more pressure you will feel. Now apply that to thebrakes in your reel.

The Abu Garcia Revo MGX uses a centrifugal braking system as welcalled the IVCB-IV Braking System. IVCB is short for Innitely VariabCentrifugal Brake of which is a new type of centrifugal brake systemCentrifugal force setting is done by simply turning the dial that is locaon the side plate.

Instead of using the star type centrifugal brake, the IVCB-IV usesswing arms (located on the spool) that rub against a metal plate (located on the side plate) as the spool spins. The faster the rotation of

the spool, the higher the centrifugal forces applied and thus more friction on the metal plate. By turning the dial you are actually moving thmetal plate towards or away from the swing arms.

    * Ryobis Flying Arm Braking System is similar to the IVCB-IV.

We will discuss the magnetic braking system in the January 2013 is-sue. I hope the information given here will be of help to your shing adecision making for future reel purchases. Till then, Happy Fishing.

I love hotels and resorts and I lovethem a lot. Being an ex-hotelier I aways walk into a hotel or a resort wcertain standards in my mind and is the mind that I have lesser contover of which is the subconsciousmind.

I have been so used to inspectinghotels and resorts that it became sond nature to me. I start taking menotes the minute I lay eyes on onethese properties. I mentally rate hoall the departments perform. I mentally rate how the staffs perform. The cottages and rooms at the Nipah Guesthouseare European themed. They look unique outsideand inside they are cozy with a warmth atmosphere. There are three types of cottages and rooms avail-able at the Nipah Guesthouse.

The largest cottage is a double storey cottage calledthe Guesthouse. Ground oor is the living room

e A Frame Cottage, my favourite.

    Deluxe Chalet

This is where my family and I called home for threedays. It comes with a Queen size (or is it double) bedand a single bed. Just nice for my family.

    A-Frame Cottage

These are my favourites. I have a little regret now notstaying in one of these cottages. The A-Frame Cot-tage has a double bed below and a stairs leadingup to a landing where another mattress could be

placed. It is the coolest looking cottage around. I willbuild one of these when I get a house with a garden.Super nice.

All three of them come with built-in bathrooms + toi-lets, air-conditioning, television, and are well deco-rated (not over decorated). The prices are really rea-sonable of which also includes a DIY breakfast whereingredients are prepared and you cook your own styleto your own liking, 24 hours coffee and tea for free, free wi, and the occasion company of hornbills (dai-ly).

Whats more is that Anuar and Alicia (not forgettingbaby Aila, hope I got her name right) are very friendly

hosts. Reminds me a lot of the B&Bs in New Zealand. They are more than happy to spend time with youanswering questions and just having some chit-chatover tea or coffee.

    Home Away From Home

The Nipah Guesthouse is not a large resort. It is built small andcomfy. Anuar says that he rather have lesser rooms so that he canspend more time with his guests.

I truly agree. When Resorts get big, they lose that human touch. One gets the feeling that the staffs who are serving you just wantsto get the job done and send you on your way. Few are genuinelyinterested in your family and you having a good holiday.

In total there are four A-Frame Cottages, One Double StoreyGuesthouse, and two Deluxe Chalets. If you are making your wayto Pangkor Island with your family, and what you want is a homeaway from home I highly recommend the Nipah Guesthouse. luk Ketapang, my favourite beach on Pangkor Island.

    Family Time

There are a number of things that the famcan enjoy in Pangkor Island. There are loof water sports activities at the beaches iTeluk Nipah (where the Nipah Guesthousis located) or you could go to Pasir Bogaor Teluk Dalam. You can book trips like Island hopping, shing, snorkelling, etc. Otactivities are banana boat rides, inatabl

water castle for kids (out at sea), etc.

I prefer quite places and I dont like crowso I took my wife and daughter to TelukKetapang where the beach is left empty fsome reason, with a few people popping taking a walk and going off. One reason would think is because of the lack of parking spaces. Who knows.

Teluk Ketapang has one of the nicestbeaches on the island (accessible beachThe sand unfortunately is not soft and podery but it is cleaner than other beaches. The sea is also clear and I was having a

blast playing with the anchovies that swanear the beach. Whilst playing with the achovies I saw a sh leap out of the watermere ten feet (estimated) away from me.

Fancy having a meal with hornbills at your table? Come to The

Nipah Guesthouse and experience something extraordinary.

    My Thoughts

For a place to stay and call home for a few days, the NipahGuesthouse is a must. I will denitely return for a few moredays than the 3 days spent on this trip. Make an early bookibefore your trip as they have got few rooms and they get a lof guest from Malaysia as well as other countries.

Bring along a good camera to take photos. Hornbills y intoand hangout at the dining area every day. Your kids will loveyou just for allowing them the privilage to experience this. Th

make great photo moments. The beaches and shes swim-ming around make great photos too.

Teluk Ketapang is highly recommended. Spend time there together with the anchovies (they swim in and they swim out),crabs, etc. A real fun place for the family but always be extracareful when at the beach.

Do not go during the rainy season. The water loses its clarityand makes it look like any other west coast, mainland beachof which are mostly unclear.

Rent a car to move about the island. Negotiate for a goodprice. Anyway, it is worth the money. Taxis are not really all tcheap either. Furthermore you may need booth space to caryour luggage and all the sh, cuttlesh, and seafood produc

    that you have bought.

    Have fun.

    Fishy Tales

    Belum, The Royal Happy Hunting

    Groundsy Philemon Foo

Sometime in the month of October 2012, threefriends, two from Hong Kong, and one from Ameica visited us with the objective of doing someshing in our waters. They are Colin, Joseph(Joe), and Philip. We (Ho and I) took them to theRoyal Belum Lake to hunt down the tomans (giasnakehead) and sebaraus (Hampala Barb).

For me, it was an opportunity to test out somereels as well as to get away from the hectic citylife.

    Belum & Temengor

Belum and Temengor is the largest and oldestrainforest in Peninsular Malaysia. It is believed tbe about 130 million years old, of which in it laysLake Temengor covering some 15,200 HectaresLake Temengor has hundreds of islands makinga fantastic place for adventurist and anglers.

The Belum and Temengor forest is also rich with

wildlife the likes of tigers, elephants, rhinos, panthers, snakes, monkeys, deer, bears, birds, sheetc. The Belum part of the forest has been gazeted as a forest reserve and thus called the RoyalBelum. One need to have a permit to enter Beluand that applies to anglers and nature lovers.

My favourite colours were therand they are re tiger, red heads, natcolored lures (sebarau, tilapia, etc.), e

I also brought along soft baits of whichave never failed me before. My number one favourite soft bait unfortunatecannot be bought anymore and that otype of bait landed lots of tomans.

Joes rst sh of the day, a juvenile giant snakehead.

    Lost And Out Of Touch

Having not shed in Belum for at least two years I felt lost and quitehelpless. We were casting out lures with colours that have proventime and again to catch tomans but we were not getting hits. Well, maybe it is that time of the season where they are turning blue andnot keen on taking lures or attacking an intruder. Probably all theyhad in mind was mating.

We continued casting the entire morning till noon, even colours thatraditionally would not have been used for tomans had a chance toplay in the water. Spoon such as the Abu Island was used as wellwithout luck. Every lure hard and soft made it to the water on our r

day of shing without luck. The only ones landed were juvenile to-mans of which would readily take anything.

This was one time I felt lost and out of touch but then again there atimes when the tomans are just not obliging even with the right wa-ter temperature and air pressure. There is nothing much we could dabout it.

Being unhappy over the rst days results I was quite pressured toget my friend hooked on to a sh. During dinner we discussed abouthe days events and we found out that the other boat landed one toman and lost one. This means that they are hitting but we were doithings wrong.

After a lot of hardwork, Joe nally caught a sebarau on y.

That night we did some strategizing as we cannot do much withthe lures that we have. Perhaps we could change the target in-stead. Joe and Philip wanted to y sh as well. So the plan wasto leave early and target the sebaraus rst. As they sun climbedhigher we would go for tomans again. In the evening we would gofor sebaraus on y.

    Obliging Sebaraus

The next day was a lot more fun. I used my trusty Abu Island II(original colour) spoon, while Joe used his gator or croc spoon (I

cannot remember), and we were on to sh. Joe caught his rstsebarau to which he aptly named Subarus. There were lots of se-baraus sizes ranging from 900g to the largest about 1.8kg. Theidea is to cast into structures and allow the spoon to drop all theway to the bottom. Give it a jerk and reel in fast.

At three we were out hunting again. took the opportunity to do some y

Colin the hero of the trip, caught and landed the most toman on his

    modest lure.

    Post Mortem

Over dinner we found out that Colin, on the other boat, landed a few tomans, and lost a few as well. Philip land-ed a toman and lost some as well. This means that thetomans were indeed taking lures and something we werdoing wasnt right.

The answer to that puzzle came in the form of colours. We had in our tackle box the right type of lure, the rightsizes of lures, brand doesnt count but yes we had good

brands of lures, but what we did not have is this one lurethat caught majority of the tomans (except for two), andit was the Rapala Barra Magnum BMAG11, BRT-BrownTiger that Colin brought from Hong Kong.

It was a colour that I wouldnt have chosen for tomanshing. Even Colin admitted that he saw it lying aroundand it had not been used and would probably never havbeen used, and decided to bring it along just so that it beused.

oman caught on Berkley Sebarau colored lure called Frenzy.

    Lesson Learnt

On this trip we concluded that perhaps it is time wetake another look at colours. Maybe we should includelures with colours that we would never give a secondglance into our lure boxes. Perhaps the tomans or rath-er the shes have recognised the lure colours that havebeen used over and over again by so many anglersthat they have become cautious with such colours.

In short, I still believe in traditional lure colours whichhave proven to catch sh over the years. However, itmay be time to include different colours that we wouldnot normally buy for times when the proven coloredlures fail to catch sh. At least we have some alterna-tives in our boxes of which may better our chance ofcatching a sh during these difcult shing days.

    Tips For Fishing In Belum

    Rods:

Depending on how adventurous you are,my general recommendation will be cast-

ing or spinning rods with a minimum weig8-20lb.

    Lines:

    20lb to 25lb mainline

    20lb to 30lb leader

For the more adventurous you could golower to like 10lb to 15lb mainline and 15lto 20lb leader. Remember, that thinner lincreate lesser noise and thus registers mobites.

Three friends after a hard days of shing.

    Reels:

3000 to 4000 size spinning reels will be enoughdepending on how much line your reel can hold.100 meters of line is enough.

For baitcasting reels anything goes as long as youcan hold about 100 meters of line and that youhave sufcient drag power.

    Lures

Soft plastics, spoons, hard lures, propeller lures, and poppers will come in handy. Colours againbring your favourites but do remember to bringsome that looks odd. Abu Island spoons are greatfor sebaraus.

Bring along a lure retriever as the opportunity toget your lure snagged at the bottom to some treestump is guaranteed. Generally the boatman canand will help you to retrieve your snagged lure butin case it is snagged too deep, your lure retrieverwill come in handy.

Note: These tips are general tips and not a rule ofthumb. You can use your own proven methods aswell as experiment and try out new methods.

he sailsh of Rompin gets a lot of credit for bringing visitors and

    nglers the world over.

Every time we hear the word called Rompin, one othe rst sh species that pops up in our minds wouprobably be the sailsh. There is good reason forthis too. Rompin is known as the sailsh capital ofMalaysia. If sailsh were not available there, Rompwould probably not be known to many and that in-cludes Malaysians.

I will leave Rompin Sailsh shing for future issues

In this issue I will talk about a lesser known predatothat visited us and gave us a good number of runs.

    The Cobias Of Rompin

Cobias (Rachycentron canadum) or what is locallycalled haruan tasik which is odd because haruantasik really means lake snakehead when translatedirectly, do thrive in our waters (seas). They are onof the bait stealers when one is targeting the sail-sh. Anyhow, they are always welcome as they areindeed hard ghters.

Back in the month of September we took somefriends from Vietnam to Rompin to do some shing

Most of them have never shed at sea as it is veryexpensive to do so in Vietnam and there are onlythree boats that take wealthy Vietnamese anglersout to sea. This trip happens to be their company tras well.

Curiosity Gets You On A Bo

Cobias swim together in packs and mosof the time they follow larger shes aroulooking for food. In the island of Langkawthey are known to follow whale sharksaround. Every now and then I used to gecalls from my staffs that whale sharks aspotted with groups of cobias following aif time permitted, we would go do some

    shing.

Cobias are curious shes as well. Theywould follow their hooked buddy all theway to the boat as if to give him supportand we would normally cast another livebait out and standby for another ght. Mof the time another one would hit the baand the fun continues.

have been missing the gym but the cobias would make great

    workout partners anytime.

    Work Those Muscles

Being tough ghters, cobias will give your muscles agood workout. You could see the agony on the facesof those given the opportunity to ght the cobias. Verystrong, very strong and tired, very tired was what somof our friends said while they were engaged in battle. However, they will not give up the ght.

After the battle and after the pictures were taken, theywould show their swollen biceps and share how strongthe sh was. I dont understand the Vietnamese languabut I can tell that the story is a good one as they wereeager to go through the same torture.

    Broken Rods And Happy Faces

In the two days of shing we landed a good number ofcobias and we lost some too. We also saw the demiseof a rod and a reel of which perished in action and thathappens when brutes go at it head on. I wouldnt rec-ommend doing so but hey, when friends are happy, I amhappy too.

    Tips And Information

Fishing in Rompin is not cheap but is indeed very satis

ing. There are more than just sailsh and cobias there. There are also mackerels, trevallies (various species),bottom shes (different shing grounds), etc. dependinon season and currents.

Live bait well. Some of the best baits are found in here minus the crabs.

    Fishing Tackle

Rods: Generally boat rods (for spinning reels or multiplier reels) wweight of at least 15-30lb. You can use jigging rods as well of at lePE3-5.

Reels: Spinning or multiplier reels that can hold in excess of 250meters of 30lb main lines.

Main Lines: 30lb braided or monolament. Braided is recommendas it has very little stretch of which is crucial to set the hook.

Leader lines: 40lb to 60lb uorocarbon is recommended as uo-rocarbon lines are less visible in water. One reason for such heavy

leader lines is that your bait could be taken by a number of shessuch as the todak (long tom) , sailsh, mackerel , as well as cobiaThere are sharks there too.

Hooks: Circle hooks are highly recommended. Sizes of hooks tobring along would be from sizes 5 to 7. On our trip we brought onlysizes 5 and 6 and lost a lot of sh on the rst day. On the secondday we used mainly size 7 and we did not lose any sh. The sheswere bigger this year.

Two shes that fed 23 people.

    Other Items To Bring:

    a. Bring along a few rolls of extra leaders and main lines just incase you run out of lines.

b.Apollo rigs along; size 4 or smaller for catching baitsh.

    c. Squid jigs just in case you want to do some squid shing.

    d. Sinkers of various sizes depending on currents.

    e. Hook remover.

    f. Line cutter.

    g. Polarized sunglasses.

    h. Camera for photo shooting.

Note 1: The recommendations here are made for general anglers.Depending on how adventurous you are and your skill level, youcan bring lighter equipment or equipment that you are comfortablewith.

Note 2: Remember to practise bag limits for all other sh speciesexcept for sailsh of which must be released.

A Knot A MonthSponsored by Penn Fishing

ying good knots is one of the most important things that any an-ler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided liness braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain

ypes of shing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. Therere knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for con-ecting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool.here are knots everywhere in shing.

While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably

tick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them. Forhis issue we will show you one of the simpler but effective knots,he Palomar Knot.

    The Palomar Knot

he Palomar is a very simple and strong shing knot for tying ane to a hook as long as it is tied properly. This is an exceptionalnot for attaching braided line. It is important to never cross thenes over each other that run through the hook eye because on

monolament and uorocarbon lines the top line will press downn the bottom line causing the knot break more easily. The Palo-

mar is more forgiving on braided shing lines.

Note: Always moisten your line with saliva or water before pullingght. This is especially important on uorocarbon lines that areasily damaged by heat from friction.

    Fish iReportsBy Mark Lee

his month we played with an app called the Fish ireports by Full-Scope IT, Inc. Fish iReports is basically an app that allows you toecord and share shing information with your buddies.

is also linked to Facebook and twitter where you can automaticallypload your catch.

    App Name : Fish iReports

    Developer : FullScope IT, Inc

What Is It? : A must have app for

every sherman / angler. It keeps

you up to date with what is biting

    and much more valuable informa-

tion to make your day a success

on the water. Facebook and Twit-

ter integration is supported here to

    show off your catches.

    This shows whats nearby. There

    are not many Malaysian users

using the app thus not many

    markers.

What Fish iReports does is to map out shing areas near you wherever you may be. It is somewhat to shing like what Waze is to driv

ing. It is an interesting concept that has yet to catch on in Malaysia

I am not sure if i t will catch on in Malaysia as we tend to be secretiv

and for good reasons. Anyhow, there are benets to using Fish ire-

ports and I would say that the best benet would be to know where

go shing at in areas you are not familiar with.
