Editor’s Letter...
You will notice a change in this
month’s Arrow!
We are combining two magazines to make
one, The Sprotbrough Arrow, which is
now in its 5th year and our latest magazine,
The Warmsworth & Barnburgh Arrow.
We often get advertisers interested in both
areas and we feel these villages are very
close to each other, both in miles and
community.
Therefore, the new Arrow will cover 6000
homes in Sprotbrough, Warmsworth,
Barnburgh and Harlington. The Arrow will
still focus on news relevant to these areas
so please continue to keep us informed of
everything that is going on locally.
If anyone has photographs from the
Barnburgh and Harlington Carnival and the
Warmsworth Gala, please send them to
me and we will publish them in the August
issue of The Arrow.
The deadline for the August issue for
advertising and articles is Wednesday 18th
July. The Arrow will be delivered from
Friday 27th July.
Best Wishes

Doncaster 67th Scouts
Gala and 6.5km Road
Race
A short break in the cloud and rain
was available on Sunday 24th June
to allow the Sprotbrough Scouts
Gala to be held on New Lane play-
ing field. Torrential rain overnight
had led the field to be waterlogged
early on and almost to the cancella-
tion of the event, but quick reor-
ganisation placed most of the sides
shows and stalls inside the mar-
quees and by 1 O'clock the sun was
shining on the village.
The conditions were ideal for the
race when it began and 190 en-trants took part including a host of
runners raising money for the Amy
Kirby Memorial Fund, and for the
first time Danum District scouts
and explorers joined in for the event and races for new trophies. The race was won by Sam Booker
in a time of 24 minutes 8 Seconds Sam was also the first Sprotbrough man home we were pleased
to welcome Councillor Pat Haith, Chair of Sprotbrough and Cusworth Parish Council who pre-
sented the trophies. The female race was won by Karen Kidney in a time of 29 minutes 50 Seconds .
Once again Richard Martin
was the first Sprotbrough
Scout home in 29 minutes
42 Seconds, taking the Dis-
trict Trophy as well.
The event brought good
crowds of supporters onto
the field and this, along with
the ever popular 'Pasta
Party' held on Saturday
night, raised over £3100 for
scout funds.
The programme raffle for a
£50 Boyland's Voucher was
won by ticket 'blue 182'
and remains unclaimed,

Hello my name is Fay I am 7 years old and
me and 8 of my friends from Copley Junior
School & my little brother and his friend
from Orchard Infants school have ran a
sponsored run around Cusworth Hall
grounds for the Yorkshire air ambulance.
We organised it all ourselves sent out
letters and made sponsor forms it wasn't a
school event but our Teacher Mrs Wood
let us use the school photocopier and
helped give out letters. We don't have all
the money collected yet but we think it will
be over £250! We are very pleased with
that and I would like to say thank you to all
my friends and their mummy's and daddy's
for helping.

We ran down the hill around the lake and
all the way back up the path, I was very
tired but my brother Ben ran it twice (he's
a good runner) Emily's big brother Thomas
ran with us to keep us safe and our parents
waited at the top of the hill where we
would finish. All the Copley children helped
organise it not just me. Fay Bennett
What a fantastic achievement! Well
done to all the children who took
part. It’s lovely to see children so
young taking an interest in helping
others. I bet your Mums’ and Dads’
are very proud!

‘Think’ you know about the
Police Crime Commissioner role?
A new campaign has been launched in South Yorkshire to raise
awareness of the role and impact of the forthcoming Police and
Crime Commissioner (PCC).
The ‘Think PCC’ campaign, led by South Yorkshire Police Authority, is designed to help highlight the
new role and encourage the public to have their say when it comes to choosing the county’s first
PCC.
The commissioner will replace the county’s Police Authority, taking over the role of holding the
police force and the Chief Constable to account.
Ahead of the November election to choose the PCC, the Police Authority will be attending a num-
ber of events across the county to raise awareness of the new role and to consult on residents’
policing priorities.
Events will include next week’s Flame in the Park at Hillsborough Park, Sheffield, on June 25. The
event is held to support the 2012 Olympic torch relay runners as they make their way through the
city, the Police Authority stand will have an Olympic theme and representatives will be asking the
public to rank their ‘gold’, ‘silver’ and ‘bronze’ police priorities.
The Authority will also participate in other South Yorkshire events including:
Lord Mayor’s Parade, Barnsley – July 14
Doncaster Show – September 1-2
Rotherham Show – September 8-9
Bill Wilkinson, South Yorkshire Police Authority chief executive, said: “This will be the biggest re-
form in policing for more than a quarter of a century so we are ensuring we get out into the com-
munity to highlight the forthcoming role and the changes it will bring with it.
“The chosen PCC will need to work with the Local Criminal Justice Board and other public services,
such as district councils, fire, transport and health bodies, as well as the voluntary and private sec-
tors – so it will affect everyone. It is therefore vital that the public are aware of the changes as it will
have a real impact.”
Their first priority for the PCC will be to approve the Police and Crime Plan for 2013/14. Other
duties will include deciding how the policing budget is spent and consulting the public and victims of
crime on community safety.
The PCC will have a stronger role in commissioning and managing service contracts from partner
organisations than the current Police Authority, reflecting their wider intended role within the
criminal justice system.
The Police Authority is currently preparing the office for the PCC and is managing the process
through a joint transition board with South Yorkshire Police and partners.
Members of the public will be able to vote for their chosen PCC on November 15, with the person
elected taking office a week later.
For more information on the Police Authority visit www.southyorks.gov.uk or follow the Police
Authority on Twitter @sypoliceauth.

We are now well in to flaming June and still the weather continues to dominate the season.
Out of the scheduled 27 fixtures that should have been played to date, we have managed to
fulfil only 10 matches, this as you can imagine has been extremely disappointing.
There is no home game on Saturday July the 14th as the Annual Village Gala takes place on the ground.
There will be plenty going on to keep all ages entertained and the Bar in the Cricket Club will be open
throughout the afternoon serving soft and alcoholic Drinks.
During the past couple of weeks we have strengthened our playing squad by signing a young opening bats-
man. Tom Green joins us from Division One Team Rossington. Tom also represents Doncaster in the
Under 17 Joe Lumb Team. We would like to welcome Tom to the club and wish him success for the re-
mainder of the season.
The Club has recently had Broadband and Wi-Fi installed at the club and it is our intention over the next
few weeks to upgrade to electronic scoring for all matches and through Total Cricket Score have the
scores updated in Real Time on the Internet.

Sprotbrough Beware!
On 25th April, 1599, a baby boy was born to middle
gentry parents in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The
child was christened Oliver Cromwell. His family
had once been one of the wealthiest in the county
although, by now they ranked closer to the bottom
when compared with their peers. That said, Oliver
had inherited money and lands from his now
deceased Father and Uncle and was able to gain a
top education at grammar school followed by
Cambridge University.
After his schooling he made money through farming
and by charging rents on his land. His money had to
stretch quite far though, as he had a wife and eight
children to support along with his widowed Mother.
He dabbled with politics but was never very
influential, until, that is, the English Civil War ‘kicked
off’. In 1640 he became an MP for Cambridge and
raised troops for the cause in 1642. He fought on
the side of the Roundheads, or parliamentarians,
against the Crown. His success in battle saw him
climbing the career ladder as fast as lightning until he
became commander of the entire army. He
overthrew the Stuart Monarchy by having Charles I
tried and executed in January, 1649. By July, 1650, he
was leading his army north to crush Scotland, then
over the sea to subdue Ireland and up and down the
British Isles taking on every Royalist army that tried
to stand in his way.
Understandably, people were afraid of Cromwell’s
presence in their town, so that in August 1651 when
he passed through Doncaster, extreme caution was
required.
At Sprotbrough Hall, lived Sir Godfrey Copley, who
had control over who crossed the Don River in the
gorge as he owned and ran the ferry. The Ferryboat
Inn, now the Boat Inn, stood on the banks and at the
boarding point for it.
Although Cromwell marched into Doncaster closer
to town, where the river was bridged, he could have
quite possibly opted to cross the river in
Sprotbrough. Because of this possibility, Sir Godfrey
received a letter from his brother-in-law Darcy
Wentworth along with other friends, urging him to
undertake certain measures to ensure his and his
family’s safety at this volatile time.
The letter went as follows (spelling errors and all):
13
“Esteemed Sir, ‘Such is the condition of our cuntrie at present as requires care to be taken as passingers; And there beeinge a by way over your ferry roed thought fit to de?so?e you would be pleased to command that your ferry boate to be locked up that there be noe passidge for frind or strangers feet untill you have further notice that there may be passidge when safetie werest.’ Septeme 7th 1651
Your family and ser[vants] Dar Wentworth
John Copley ???
???????? G. Byan”
Good cousin be carefull whome ye entertaine for ye danger is greate.
The letter is of a serious nature and carries a strong message. ‘Lock up your Ferryboat to both friends and
strangers’ and be careful who you have round for tea!
It would be 250 years before the Copley’s provided a bridge at this point. It came in the form of a toll
bridge. By now, the Civil War was ancient history and on the adjacent bank of the Don stood the thriving
quarrying community
of Levitt Hagg. Today
lower Sprotbrough is
one of the most
picturesque corners of
Doncaster with its
quaint pub by the canal
and its nature reserve
providing a haven for
wildlife and a gateway
to the Pennines
beyond. Sprotbrough
can rest easy again as
the marauding armies
have long since
vanished. The ‘danger’
is no longer ‘greate’ for
us.
