Local MP Caroline Flint met members of the St Peter’s Mothers Union, Warmsworth, this week to hear their views about families in adversity.

Said Branch Co-ordinator Sheila Barnes, : “It was great to meet Caroline and to have such a good discussion. One of the objectives of the Mothers Union is to help those whose family life has met with adversity; and we know that every day Caroline Flint is helping families that are facing real difficulties. Caroline’s experiences of dealing with economic hardship, drug and alcohol related problems and many other issues that beset families, made her talk very interesting. Our members were impressed by Caroline's understanding and sensitivity.”

Said Caroline: “I was given a wonderful welcome by local members; and really enjoyed the two hours we had discussing the problems that families face in my constituency.

“Whilst I would be the first to say that the Government and local councils should help and support families facing difficulty, there is no substitute for a strong family. Today’s families are finding life very challenging. Many are caring for children and elderly relatives at the same time alongside managing problems of changing jobs or losing hours or pay. MPs see some of the very worst cases; from family breakdown to child neglect and domestic violence.

“I was impressed that the Mothers Union felt this was an important issue to debate for their parish and it was a pleasure to meet their members.”

News from Copley Junior School

Welcome to Year 3 Welcome to our new Year 3 children who joined Copley Junior in September. Here are some of the children’s first impressions.

Kyle: I like Copley because the classrooms are friendly and the teachers are helpful and the playground is big and everyone in the class is awesome.

Maisie: I like Copley because it’s a happy place where children and staff look after each other.

Matthew: I think the teachers are kind, I like PE outside and running relay races. Aleesha: My favourite bit of Copley Junior School is making friends, you have to be good and kind to other children.

Bethany: I like it in the class because it’s fun. We had a tour around and a playtime. I can’t wait to come again tomorrow.

Our Portraits At the beginning of every school year each child completes a pencil drawing of their face so we have pictures of our whole school family on display. Here are some examples from ‘the gallery’.

Year 6 Visit to Murton Park Our Year 6 children (and the adults also!) looked wonderful dressed in their World War II clothes, ready to travel back in time for their visit to Murton Park, to experience what life was like during the Second World War. “First we took part in four activities and we were told how people in World War II did their washing and cooking. I had to prepare the butter and it was arm aching work. Then we made a rag rug, which was a lot of fun. Next we wrote our postcards home, just as the evacuees would have done.

Page 9: The arrow oct13

9

Finally, we went to an outside shelter and we were told about some of the bombs and we tried on a gas mask. Then we got to put out a small bomb with a water pump! Murton Park was a great visit and we learned a lot.” by Tiana H in Class 6C. We look forward to sharing some of our school news again soon. Best Wishes, E.A. Crayton Headteacher

Whether you are an experienced singer or just a novice Rock Choir is the choir for you! With over 16,000 members nationwide spread across 240 towns Rock Choir is for absolutely anyone of any age or ability. Doncaster Rock Choir is led by local musician and performer Kate Threlfall who studied piano with the London College of Music and trained at the renowned Italia Conti Academy in London. She says “I am very proud of what Rock Choir has achieved since we started in 2005, we pioneered the new move towards ‘NO AUDITIONS & NO REQUIREMENT TO READ MUSIC’ in choirs and we really do welcome everyone into our family”. Rock Choir is all about having fun with singing and enjoying some well deserved ‘me time’ and members go away from the sessions feeling relaxed, refreshed and confident. We never ask anyone to sing on their own unless they want to and it’s just brilliant - everyone should try it!

Rock Choir is now the UK's leading contemporary choir and we have recently been featured on ‘The Alan Titch-marsh Show’ and had our own documentary on ITV1 called ‘The Choir That Rocks’. This year we also performed our very own show live at the Liverpool Echo Arena which according to one Doncaster member was “A unique and spine-tingling experience”. “To be given the opportunity to sing with thousands of other Rock Choir mem-bers in such an iconic venue was a dream come true for me”. Rock Choir are also well-known for our local performances as well and in the last year we have performed our very own Flash Mob for Comic Relief at the Lakeside Village Outlet featuring Dixie & Gayle from Real Radio, we helped entertain the crowds at last year’s Christmas Lights Switch On in Doncaster town centre and we have performed across South Yorkshire in the Sheffield Winter Garden, at the Lord Mayor’s Parade in Barnsley and at Meadowhall Shopping Centre raising funds and awareness for local charities including Support Dogs, The South Yorkshire Heart Appeal and Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Our weekly sessions are friendly and up-beat and our unique arrangements of pop, rock and motown songs make singing in a choir fun and rewarding! There is so much to be excited about when you join Rock Choir, the singing, the performing, the fun, the health benefits and of course it's one of the best ways to engage with your local community and make new friends for life. Come along and experience for yourself the benefits of singing in a choir! Book your FREE taster session or join us now - go to www.rockchoir.com or call 01252 714276.

Brand new weekly sessions run every Monday (excluding school holidays) from 8pm - 9.30pm at Hall Cross Lower School, St Michael’s Road, Bessacarr DN4 5LU. We look forward to meeting you there!
