Shiseido est une société japonaise, de dimension in-ternationale, connue pour ses parfums et produits cos-métiques. Le caractère singulier de cette marque estillustré par le mode d’écriture de son nom: l’entrepriseutilise l’alphabet occidental, et ce même dans son paysd’origine. L’identité transparaît malgré tout dans la cal-ligraphie. Les lettres sont comme dessinées au pinceauà la manière des idéogrammes orientaux. Le choix decette écriture différente, placée sous l’égide d’unedouble culture, ne relève pas simplement d’une dé-marche esthétique et d’un positionnement commer-cial. Il correspond à un état d’esprit d’ouverture, et àun réel intérêt, pour la civilisation occidentale. Bienqu’illisible pour la plupart des consommateurs japo-nais, le nom de la marque est reconnu. Le graphismede la première lettre joue un rôle prépondérant.

Couché et allongé, à peine formé, le S prend l’aspectd’une vague très linéaire, presque horizontale. Laforce de cette signature a inspiré Jean-Guy Farnoux,architecte de la nouvelle implantation industrielle dufabricant en France, près d’Orléans. D’une part, le bâti-ment affiche un plan masse en forme de S aplati. D’au-tre part, la façade principale est mise en valeur par unesérie de vagues en ALUCOBOND®.La couverture, découpée en plusieurs volumes maisavec un seul pan incliné, est enveloppée dans une sur-toiture profilée comme un toboggan à pente douce.Ces lignes sinueuses se retrouvent dans la courbured’un mur pignon. Cette carrosserie parfaitement des-sinée se devait de répondre à des exigences sévères. Ilfallait choisir un matériau suffisamment souple pourpouvoir reproduire toutes les formes arrondies, mais

Symbolic waves in pink Shiseido is a Japanese company inter-nationally renown for perfumes andcosmetic products. The Companystands out among other Japanese en-terprises since its founder selected towrite its name in Latin letters, even athome. The first letter signifies a label.When Shiseido designed a new indu-strial plant in France, their architect,Jean-Guy Farnoux, simply took the Sof the label as an aesthetic base forshaping the layout, the main facade,

the gable and the roofs. This finelyshaped outer skin presented manychallenges: it had to be fine enough toallow for all the curves in the letter S,and yet it had to be resistant to theelements and environmental pollution.Farnoux therefore decided to use 4mmALUCOBOND ® panels for the exteriorof the building. Initially, he opted forthe standard colours blue or grey, butShiseido wanted the building to be inthe prime colour of their products:

pink. ALUCOBOND ® was finally sup-plied in a colour that matched exactlythe client’s sample. Not only do thepanels blend well with the rest of thebuilding but their changing appearan-ce under different light also reflects thecolour of the sky and the weather.

aussi très résistant pour offrir les meilleures garantiespossibles en terme de vieillissement et tenue mécani-que. Elle a été réalisée en ALUCOBOND® de 4 mmd’épaisseur. Ce parement est présent à la fois en sur-toiture et en façade. Au total, 5400 m2 de panneauxont été mis en œuvre. Ils sont posés sur des profilsoméga, selon un calepinage transversal en couvertureet horizontal en mur, avec fixations traversantes: rivetsmasqués par des caches.Dans un premier temps, l’architecte a conçu son bâti-ment dans des teintes habituellement utilisées en cons-truction. En l’occurrence, il pensait que le bleu ou legris pouvait y occuper une bonne place. Mais l’espritShiseido veillait, et l’a conduit sur une autre voie. Eneffet, la direction française de l’entreprise a pensé quele parement d’ALUCOBOND® plaqué sur le bâtiment

pouvait permettre d’aller encore plus loin, pour affi-cher en plus la couleur fétiche de la marque: le rose.Jean-Guy Farnoux a effectivement constaté que cetteteinte est partout présente chez ce fabricant: au ni-veau des parfums et produits cosmétiques, des flacons,des emballages... Sous l’impulsion de M. Guillemin,représentant du maître d’ouvrage, il a donc envisagél’architecture en rose. Inutile de préciser qu’un tel co-loris ne fait pas partie des gammes courantes des in-dustriels du bâtiment. Quand même, il a été possiblede produire un ALUCOBOND® rose très précisementconforme aux spécifications demandées. De plus, ils’avère que cet ALUCOBOND® tout à fait inhabituelsied bien aux parois du bâtiment. Sensible à la couleurdu ciel, il renvoie des reflets changeant selon la météo,la saison et l’heure de la journée.

Symbolische rosa WellenShiseido ist eine japanische Firma, inter-national bekannt für seine Parfums undkosmetischen Produkte. Die Firma setztsich in Japan von andern ab, indem sieihren Namen auch in ihrem Heimatlandin lateinischen Buchstaben schreibt. Da-bei hat der Anfangsbuchstabe die Bedeu-tung eines Labels. Beim Entwurf für eineneue Industrieanlage von Shiseido inFrankreich nahm der Architekt Jean-GuyFarnoux das flach geschwungene S desLabels als ästhetische Vorlage, wonach er

den Grundriss, die Hauptfassade, eineGiebelfassade und die Dächer formte. Die-se fein geformte Aussenhaut stellte ver-schiedene Anforderungen, sie musstegenügend fein sein, um alle Rundungenfür die Formen des S zu ermöglichen undgleichzeitig genügend resistent gegenüberUmwelteinflüssen. Farnoux liess deshalbdas Gebäude mit ALUCOBOND® Plattenvon 4 mm Dicke decken. Zuerst allerdingsdachte er an Platten in der Standardfarbeblau oder grau. Shiseido wollte aber die

Gebäudefarbe auf die Hauptfarbe ihrerProdukte abstimmen: auf rosa. Es wardenn auch möglich, ALUCOBOND® Plat-ten herstellen zu lassen, die genau dervorgegebenen Farbe entsprechen. Es zeigtsich, dass diese nicht nur gut mit denAussenwänden des Baus übereinstimmen,sondern gleichzeitig auf die Farben desHimmels je nach Wetterlage mit wech-selnden Effekten reagieren.

La remodelación de la clínica de ortodoncia Ramon Xam-mar Orto-doncia S.L., en el edificio de oficinas de la calle Pompeu de Lérida, hacumplido su objetivo de ampliar y modernizar las instalaciones exi-stentes. Con la reforma, finalizada en septiembre de 1999, este cen-tro de ortodoncia ocupa, con una superficie de 580 m2, una de las 8plantas del edificio. Las 12 salas de trabajo de la clínica de ortodon-cia proyectan ahora una imagen diáfana y relajante a sus visitantes. Cabe distinguir dos zonas diferenciadas en la intervención realizada.Por una parte, el tratamiento más funcional de los despachos y salasde consulta y conferencias. Por otra, la más pública, de recepción, es-pera y anilla de distribución, donde se han solucionado las solicitudesmás exigentes, aunando la comodidad con la representatividad dellugar. Se ha resuelto satisfactoriamente mediante la adecuación delmobiliario – mesas y sillas blancas para recibir y proyectar mejor la luzexterior –, el tratamiento del techo, con paneles fibrovegetales fono-absorbentes de color beige claro, y el suelo, con un pavimento deporcelana del mismo color. Finalmente, la conformación del espacio,compartimentado con vidrieras y paneles traslúcidos y delimitado porlos cierres perimetrales de paneles de polietileno recubiertos de al-uminio ALUCOBOND® de 3 mm modulados de forma apaisada. Salvo los espacios destinados a RX, revelado, almacén, taller y archi-vo, toda la parte clínica es un espacio único, compartimentado portableros de trabajo y mamparas que lo subdividen en pequeños espa-cios abiertos. Los acabados superficiales con materiales no porosos y fácilmente lim-piables –como los paneles de laminado celulósico, los suelos de por-celana y los paneles de aluminio ALUCOBOND® – han resultado to-talmente idóneos cumpliendo los mayores requisitos de asepsia quedebe tener un centro médico de estas características.

A transparent orthodontics clinicRamon Xam-mar Ortodoncia S.L., aclinic located in Lérida, has been re-modelled and thus accomplished itsobjective to expand and modernize itsexisting facilities. This orthodonticsclinic now has 12 working roomswhich invite visitors to relax in theirtransparent ambience. Surfaces aremade of non-porous and easy-to-cleanmaterials such as noise-absorbing mi-neral fibre panels, porcelain floor tilesand ALUCOBOND® panels. These ma-terials are ideal for aseptic environ-ments.

One of Italy’s most original private housing projects clearly stands outin the district of San Donato Milanese at the gates of Milan. The in-ternational scholar of modern architecture, Kenzo Tange, designedthe building complex. The Japanese architect wanted to create a ra-dial city with links between the buildings to improve and optimizecommunication. The project consists of a number of blocks of offices,commercial and residential buildings and accommodation facilities.The complex was built by Immobiliare Metanopoli s.p.a., a memberof the ENI Group. The first part of the complex, designed by KenzoTange and named ‘Torri AGIP’, houses the prestigious company BMWItaly. The second part, called ‘Le Torri Lombarde’, consists of a 72 000 m2 residential block with a total of 700 flats in 200 differentlayouts. Arch. Giuseppe Pensotti and Roberto Ubaldi ‘Architetti Asso-ciati – G14’ of Milan are responsible for its architectural design. Thefacades are made of stone tiles as well as 20 000 m2 ALUCOBOND®

panels of 4 and 6 mm thickness, PVDF stove-lacquered in the stan-dard colour bronze metallic, fabricated and installed by Messrs. Alvetof Milan and Messrs. Giuliani Infissi of Forlì. The ALUCOBOND® mate-rial has been successfully used as flat, shaped and curved panels forvarious types of application such as ceilings, balconies, patios abovethe terraces, gazebos, wall claddings, column casings, bowers, canti-lever roofings, stair case linings, etc. The panels were folded on fouredges and suspended on bolts. The gaps between the panels were fil-led with silicone rubber to ensure an optimum sealing of the facade.

Die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Alltag aufzuheben,dazu trat die Moderne zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhundertsan. Aus den allzu engen akademischen Fesseln der Mu-seen sollte die Kunst befreit werden und der Alltagdurch Kunst eine Verwandlung erfahren. Wie etwa inden Hackeschen Höfen in Berlin, die der Jugendstil-künstler August Endell mit organischen Formen undfarbenfrohen Backsteinen umgestaltete und die heu-te, nach dem Mauerfall und ihrer Revitalisierung, kaummehr aus dem Berliner Stadtleben wegzudenken sind.Oder wie etwa im bunten Magdeburg des Stadtbau-rats Bruno Taut, der Anfang der Zwanzigerjahre ganzeStrassenzüge in abstrakte Farbfelder auflöste, die vomneuen Geist der Zeit kündeten.Von einem nicht minder wagemutigen Aufbruch kün-det nun, 75 Jahre danach, ein 21-geschossiges Wohn-hochhaus der Prima-Lichtenberg am nordöstlichenRande der Berliner Innenstadt. In Europas grösstesKunstwerk wurde hier ein monotoner Wohnturm ausDDR-Zeiten verwandelt. Über fast 15 000 m2 Fläche er-strecken sich nun die Traumbilder des international re-nommierten Künstlers Gustavo. Mit poetischen Bildernwie etwa dem einer roten Sonne, einer königlichen Fa-milie oder eines schüchternen, surrealistischen Schau-spielers trug hier der Spanier farbenfroh und stets auchetwas skurril die Wärme des Südens in den oftmalsgrauen Himmel Berlins. Ein Augenfang der besonde-ren Art ist daraus hervorgegangen, der eindringlichwie gefällig die Möglichkeiten einer anspruchsvollen

Europe’s largest work of artA monotonous block of flats datingback to East German times has beentransformed into Europe’s largest workof art. The frequently grey sky aboveBerlin has been enhanced by thewarmth of the South. The Spanish art-ist Gustavo has used bright colours topaint his somewhat bizarre pictures of,for example, a red sun, a royal familyand a shy, surrealistic actor. The fanta-sy images of this internationally re-nowned artist cover an area of almost15,000 square metres. His playfullyportrayed figures hardly reveal thechallenge this project presented to theartist and everyone else involved. Alluneven or bent surfaces of the panelcladded building had to be electroni-cally measured before the Berlin‘Stadtplanung+Architektur’ Work Teamwas able to translate Gustavo’s figuresinto three-dimensional pictures. Thecolourful, almost organically flowingcontours of Gustavo’s figures were an

equally demanding challenge. Theyhad to run across the building assmoothly as possible which meant thatcutting wastage and joints had to bereduced to the minimum. This project was only possible withALUCOBOND® material. Twelve differ-ent colours were used to saw and millsome 11,000 jigsaw puzzle pieces bymeans of computer control. As a per-fect match for the ALUCOBOND® ma-terial, the facade constructioncompany HENKE developed a newsubstructure which allowed the hori-zontal and vertical attachment of indi-vidual pieces at freely selected places. The project received much interest and praise. Gustavo’s figures not onlyenchanted the residents of 296 flats. They have made the entire districtstand out. Christiane Herzog, the wifeof the former German President, actedas patron for this truly unusual building.

Plattenbau-Modernisierung zum Ausdruck bringt.Gustavos Figuren bezaubern so längst nicht nur dieBewohner der 296 Wohnungen allein, sondern habenein ganzes Stadtviertel zum Leuchten gebracht.Der spielerischen Leichtigkeit seiner Figuren ist heutekaum mehr anzumerken, welche Herausforderungendieses Projekt an den Künstler und alle am Bau Betei-ligten stellte. Denn schier unüberwindlich schienen zuAnfang die Probleme ihrer Umsetzung in Architektur.Trotz einer industriellen Bauweise erwiesen sich bei-spielsweise die Unregelmässigkeiten des Hauses alsbeträchtlich. Alle Unebenheiten, Lotabweichungen,Ecken, Fensterlaibungen und -stürze mussten so zu-erst elektronisch vermessen werden, bevor die Berli-ner Arbeitsgruppe Stadtplanung + Architektur darangehen konnte, Gustavos Figuren in ein dreidimensio-nales Raumgebilde zu übersetzen. Die betont buntewie organisch geschwungene Formensprache von Gustavos Figuren erwies sich dabei als eine kaum ge-ringere Herausforderung. Denn möglichst fliessendsollten sie sich über das Haus erstrecken, was nach sichzog, dass die Schnittverluste und Fugenvorsprünge aufein absolutes Minimum reduziert werden mussten.Allein mit dem Material ALUCOBOND® konnte dies ge-lingen. Denn allein mit ALUCOBOND® konnte einederartige Optimierung erzielt werden. Aus zwölf ver-schiedenen Farben wurde so computergesteuert einPuzzle aus 11 000 unterschiedlich geformten Einzel-teilen erarbeitet, gesägt und gefräst. Mit einem Codeaus Buchstaben und Zahlen versehen konnten sie dannabsolut passgenau und just in time zu einer Hausfas-sade zusammengefügt werden. Das grösste Teil misstdabei ein auf drei Meter und das kleinste hingegen,nämlich das Auge einer sitzenden Figur, nur etwa fünfauf fünf Zentimeter. Kongenial zum MaterialALUCOBOND® entwickelte hierfür der FassadenbauerHenke eigens eine neue Unterkonstruktion, die es ersterlaubte, dass die derart unterschiedlich zugeschnit-tenen Einzelteile horizontal wie vertikal auf nahezu völ-lig frei wählbaren Befestigungspunkten angebrachtwerden konnten.Überaus gross war so auch die Resonanz, die das Pro-jekt erfuhr. Christiane Herzog, die Frau des vormaligen Bundespräsidenten, erklärte sich zu einer Schirmherr-schaft über das ungewöhnliche Haus bereit. Und auchDr. Volker Hassemer und Peter Strieder, der frühereund der amitierende Stadtentwicklungssenator vonBerlin, begrüssten in selten euphorischen Worten das Gustavo-Projekt, das ein ganzes Stadtviertel auf-wertete. La plus grande œuvre d'art européenneUne tour d’habitation monotone édifiéeau temps de la RDA a été métamorphoséepour devenir la plus grande œuvre d’arteuropéenne. Des images poétiques tellesqu’un soleil rougeoyant, une familleroyale ou un acteur timide et surréalisteont permis à l’Espagnol Gustavo de fairepénétrer la chaleur d’un sud haut en cou-leur et toujours un peu cocasse dans leciel souvent gris de Berlin. Les scènes oni-riques de l’artiste espagnol au renom in-ternational s’étendent sur près de 15 000mètres carrés. La légèreté ludique des for-mes ne laisse guère soupçonner le défiqu’a constitué ce projet à la fois pour l’ar-tiste et pour toutes les personnes impli-quées. Toutes les inégalités et aplombsimprécis au niveau des panneaux ont dûêtre mesurés électroniquement, avantqu’un groupe de travail berlinois d’urba-nisme et d’architecture n’entreprenne detraduire les œuvres de Gustavo dans desimages spatiales en trois dimensions. Lesformes colorées et hardies devaient être en

quelque sorte l’évidence même de l’édifice,d’où la nécessité de réduire à un mini-mum absolu les déperditions dues à lacoupe et aux joints.L’entreprise n’a été possible que grâce aumatériau ALUCOBOND®. Sur une palettede douze couleurs, on a ainsi monté unpuzzle constitué de pas moins de 11 000pièces découpées et fraisées sous l’assis-tance de l’ordinateur. En complément aumatériau ALUCOBOND®, le constructeurde façades Henke a développé une nou-velle structure permettant d’apposer lesdifférentes pièces à la fois horizonta-lement et verticalement sur des pointsd’ancrage librement choisis.Le projet fini n’a pas manqué de faireparler de lui, et la fantaisie de Gustavoqui enchante les habitants des 296 appar-tements, est en quelque sorte la lumièrede tout un quartier. Christiane Herzog,l’épouse de l’ancien président fédéral, ad’ailleurs accepté de parrainer cette réali-sation originale.

In the greater metropolitan area of Sao Paolo, Brazil, creativity is in-creasingly found in new architectural projects. The creative touch ofthe new ‘International Shopping Guarulhos’ shopping center is par-ticularly striking.Architect Heitor Coltro added a new building to a former type-writer factory, thus creating an area of 133 000 m2. Silver metallicALUCOBOND® material was used as cladding for the columns of theold building and to enhance five facades. Conical shapes, arches andcurves and the manner in which the panels are fitted clearly show theversatility of ALUCOBOND® material. The main facade of the centrehas a monumental arch of 42 m width, supported by two 22 m tallcolumns of variable diameter. The diameter of each column decrea-ses all the way up to a circular top which supports a large globe. A spacious and most intruiging entrance provides access to the shop-ping center. Conical 9m columns are connected at the far ends of acanopy leading to the glass-covered entrance. Just outside, the foun-tains and pool provide a fresh contrast to the precise metallic shapesand the solid mass of the building. Subtle contrasting shades as wellas bright colours and decorative elements enhance the metallic lookof the ALUCOBOND® material. The attachment includes cassette pa-nels with riveted L angles, sealed with silicone. A busy shopping mallof this size is bound to be diverse and eclectic. In fact, architects haveincluded various styles from all over the world to create truly uniqueexpressions. The globes on top of the columns of the main facade are,indeed, an appropriate symbol.

The new Centro Cultural de Macau, the territory’sflagship project for the run-up to the return to Chi-nese rule in 1999, is located on one of Macau’s mostrecent land reclamation areas at the outer Harbour.The building is the result of an international competi-tion held in 1994 to design a Cultural Center on a new-ly reclaimed area facing the Pearl River, southeast ofMacau Peninsula. In the Center, there are the MacauArts Museum, the temporary exhibitions gallery, twoauditoriums, conference facilities, music and dancestudios, restaurants and a cafeteria, a shop selling art-related materials, and a public garden.The complex is composed of a rectangular block andanother block with a large curved wall. The two blocksare interrelated by an open central plaza elevated 4.5metres above street level. This plaza is the primary me-

ans of access to both blocks and, from this level, onecan enjoy panoramic views of the river, the islands tothe south and the public garden to the north. At thesouthern end of the plaza, facing the river, is a cascadesparkling with sunshine. Though the complex has acool and grey tone, the waterfront view and tranquilatmosphere make this an ideal place to appreciate artand performances.The design is based on the use of very few mate-rials, mainly dark grey granite and silver metallicALUCOBOND® panels on the external wall cladding;and granite, white plaster and cherry wood panels ininternal finishes.Over the roof of the auditoriums building is a promi-nent wing-shaped spacial steel frame; this developsfrom the edge of a large auditorium, crosses over the

Es besteht auszwei Blöcken, darin finden verschiede-ne Institutionen Platz: das Kunstmuse-um, eine Galerie, zwei Auditorien,Konferenzräume, Musik- und Tanzstu-dios, Restaurants, verschiedene Kunst-läden und ein öffentlicher Park. Einprominentes Dach in Flügelform hält

den ganzen Komplex optisch zusam-men. Eine offene und zentrale Plaza,4,5 m über Strassenniveau, verbindetdie beiden Blöcke. Von der Plaza ausgeniesst man die Sicht auf den PearlRiver und das Panorama auf die um-liegenden Inseln. Für den Bau wurdennur wenige ausgewählte Materialienverwendet. Für die Aussenfassade wur-de hauptsächlich dunkelgrauer Granitund ALUCOBOND® in silbermetallicgewählt. Die Wände im Innern beste-

hen aus Granit, weissem Verputz undKirschbaumholzplatten. Die Materiali-en der Fassaden wurden aufgrund ih-rer Fähigkeiten ausgewählt, im Klimavon Macau zu bestehen. Die Luft hierist feucht und salzhaltig und die Stadtwird häufig von Taifunen heimgesucht.ALUCOBOND® in der Standardfarbesilbermetallic kontrastiert den grauenGranit und verschafft dem Kulturzent-rum ein zeitgemässes Aussehen, dasan europäische Architektur erinnert.

Itis well cladded with ALUCOBOND® panels and createsshading zones along the roof and above another pro-minent feature – a skylight over the foyer.All materials for the project were carefully chosen towithstand the demanding environmental conditionsof Macau’s waterfront location, which include fre-quent typhoons and a high degree of seawater spray.ALUCOBOND® in the standard colour silver metallicprovides a perfect contrast with the dark grey granite,giving the complex a modern, functional appearance,reminiscent of trends in modern European architect-ure. The ALUCOBOND® cladding design is based onthe proven system ‘SZ-20’, recommended by AlusuisseSingen GmbH for open-joint wall claddings withhorizontal panel layout. The main contractor, who also

executed the cladding works, fabricated all panels onsite, utilising available space within the building whileunder construction and minimising transport. The Cul-tural Center of Macau is another landmark usingALUCOBOND®, built to bring more life to this new partof the town. It will be the centrepoint for the culturallife of Macau, even after the handover to China at theend of 1999.Erich Schneider

Le centre culturel de MacaoLe nouveau centre culturel de Macao a étéen quelque sorte la vedette du territoireavant sa restitution à la Chine à l’au-tomne 1999. Erigé sur des terres conqui-ses à l’extrémité de la zone portuaire, lecomplexe est constitué de deux blocs abri-tant divers locaux et institutions: le Muséedes Beaux-Arts, une galerie, deux auditoi-res, des salles de conférences, des studiosde musique et de danse, ainsi que des res-taurants, différentes boutiques d’objetsd’art et même un parc accessible au pu-

blic. Un toit proéminent recouvre de sonaile protectrice l’ensemble du complexe,les deux blocs étant également reliés parune place centrale ouverte à 4,5 m dehauteur au-dessus de la rue. On y décou-vre la vue sur la Rivière des Perles ainsique le panorama des îles environnantes.Les façades du centre ont été réaliséesavec des matériaux spécialement choisis,à commencer par un granite gris foncé etpar des panneaux en ALUCOBOND® sil-ver metallic. Les parois intérieures marient

le granite, un crépi blanc et des panneauxde merisier. Les matériaux pour les faça-des ont été choisis en fonction de leurspropriétés à résister au climat de Macao.L’air est en effet très humide et accuse iciune forte concentration de sel, sans comp-ter que la ville est souvent frappée par des typhons. L’ALUCOBOND® dans sacouleur standard silver metallic contrasteavec le granite gris, donnant au centreculturel un air de modernisme rappelantl’architecture européenne.
