April Meeting Entertainment

At the April 7 General meeting, I am pleased to an-nounce that Craig Davis and Susan Bloomfield will be joining us again to share another fantastic video presentation . Craig and Susan have been diving to-gether since 1997, diving extensively in the Indo-Pacific including such des-tinations as The Maldives, Borneo, Thailand, the Solo-mon Island, Gala-pagos, Cocos, Truk, Papua New Guinea, and Palau.

Most of their div-ing now is concen-trated on Indone-sia. They recently returned from their 3rd and 4th trips to Raja Amapt where the oceanic man-tas were the highlight of the trips.

Craig and Susan’s video works have been compared to

“National Geographic” by those who have seen their

presentations. Susan is an excellent critter spotter for

Craig’s amazing talent for capturing and portraying

marine life. In the past they amazed us with their high

definition videos of Sulawesi, Eastern Indonesia, Gala-

pagos and the Philippines.

Craig has been shooting underwater video almost from

the moment he hit the water. He is currently shooting a

Sony HD CX550 in a Bluefin housing with external

Macromate. He likes shooting the big stuff but he loves

capturing the interesting behaviors and interaction of

the marine life.

Scuba Diver Killed While Exploring Deadly Underwater Caverns New Mexico’s Blue Hole has been closed to the public for 40 years, but Shane Thompson had permission to venture inside. 04/03/2016 11:57 am ET

A veteran scuba diver was killed after becoming en-tombed in deadly underwater caverns that had been sealed off for the last 40 years, authorities said.

Shane Thompson, 43, was attempting to map out parts of New Mexico’s Blue Hole last weekend when he became separated from his partner in the murky wa-ter, The Guadalupe County Communicator reported.

The Navy veteran, who had 20 years of diving experi-ence, according to his website, had received permis-sion to enter the caves with the ADM Exploration Foundation. The caves had otherwise been closed off since two Oklahoma college students died while scu-ba diving in 1976.

• If you are looking for equipment, ask around at club meetings. The club is working on organizing an equipment swap, possibly this spring, where members can trade and/or sell dive equipment.

• Dive safety – Jono brought up that it is a good idea to have emergency information available when diving.

Decision: Most club members are interested and we will investigate further.

Update: There are a number of options available for dive tags: DAN provides one, Di-verTag.net, Roadrunner, Army Surplus (Nick), Myron made a tag for himself, alumi-num etched luggage tags etc.

interested in purchasing one, please email him at: [email protected].

Special Committee: No new information

Past Dives:

• February Club Dive: San Carlos Beach, Monte-rey: Originally planned for McAbee Beach, but the beach was closed due to contamination (see February club newsletter). Eight members were at the club di-ve, and members saw some bat stars, lots of sea hares, and some sea urchin. The first dive was the pipeline with visibility of 10-15 feet. The second di-ve was Middle Reef with a visibility of 20 feet.

• Philippines, Oliver: Several club members were on the trip: Oliver, Dennis, Neil, Meredith, Jeff. The group started at Puerto Galera, where they stayed at a resort and then they moved to the Azores liveaboard.

a. Puerto Galera, Philippines – 71 deg - which is cold if you are expecting tropical weather. Dives included several reefs and diving off of Verde Island (big walls). Decent visibility – 30-40 feet. Oliver wouldn’t go here again, as he enjoyed Dumaguete, Philippines more. He will not go to the Philippines in winter again.

b. Azores Liveaboard, Wrecks of Coron Islands – 7 or 8 merchant marine Japanese ship wrecks. 78 deg (still kind of cold) and visibility was fair to good. Best wreck was an oil tanker (450 feet long or so), where the visibility was barely across it – so it was an exploration. Guide brought Oliver and Neil to oil tanks.

c. Azores Liveaboard, Apo Reef – National Marine Sanctuary in the middle of the ocean with tem-peratures of 80-81 deg. Fantastic diving, with a once in a lifetime experience – saw cuttlefish mating. One of the cuttlefish came up close to Oliver. At 80 feet there was a thermocline that dropped 10 deg, so they tended to stay above the thermocline.

Thanks to Paul Viktus for sharing photos on Face-book and not making them private.

Bone nominations:

• Jeff Tindall (still in Philippines) – Did the entire liveaboard trip with socks because he forgot his boots in Puerto Galera.

• Logan Bell - Disconnected his hose for the power inflator and was trying to manually inflate his BCD.

Old Business

• Alan presented his write up for the guest flier. Much debate followed and it was suggested that we don’t need a full page flier but instead of maybe a busi-ness card.

Old Action: Alan to finish a tri-fold flier for guests at the club meeting. [3/17 update: action item still in progress]

• Club shirt - Nick, Jono, and Patty Baugh have all communicated interest in helping to create a club shirt. An announcement at the January general meeting was made requesting designs and Don also included a request in the last Tooter. At the last BOD meeting Jono communicated that Oaklandish would be willing to do a custom screen printing, we would just need to provide a design to get a quote.

Old Update: To date, no suggestions have come in for shirt designs, so we have decided that we will try to use the club logo from previous club shirts.

Several shirts options were presented and will be dis-cussed again at the next BOD meeting:

Alan contacted Connie and she still has the pat-

tern for the club logo used previously. She could embroider the club logo on shirts or other items for club members, at a small cost. Connie communicated that t-shirts don’t work well with her embroidery machine.

CaféPress, a website that allows you to create customized goods, was another option men-tioned (http://www.cafepress.com/). We can upload our club design to the website and then club members would be able to order a range of garments with that design. Price varies depend-ing on item purchased.

[3/17 update: action item still in progress] Equipment Swap

New Update: May 14 is tentatively set as the date and Dennis and Patti will host the event at their

house. Time to be 10 AM -4 PM.

New Business

Dive Tags: Bernhard suggested the club buy dive tags for members. Jono and Nick presented example tags that Nick could print for us and the tags would cost ~$4/tag.

Action: Board decided that at the next general meeting the club should vote on buying dive tags for members (cost ~$4/tag). The board proposes that each member get one tag (no re-placement tags will be purchased) and the total spending this year is not to exceed $300.

The “POC” is a Point of Contact for a club dive. Any member is welcome to plan a dive and put in on our web site calendar. You don’t have to be a dive master, or the director of training, or a board member to do this. Any club dive is done with the expectation that there will be people there to help.
