One of the many gifts God has given to His people is what in Pauline scriptures is known as “free will”. We are free to choose. We have the capacity to determine our actions, to repent, and to change the course of our lives. We are also free to choose our word and to mean them.

Our deeds must match our words. Our words must be in harmony with our deeds. Only in such words acquire meaning, understanding, resonance, and gravitas. They have meaning and understanding in the measure that they are tangible, concrete. They have resonance and gravitas, weight, as long as they can be put into action. Only in such words become alive. Only in such the word becomes flesh.

Today‘s gospel present us two given words. Two sons have been summoned and invited to work in their father’s vineyard. The first one gives a clear negative response (“I will not.”), no excuses, no justifications, no apparent conflict involved. In many ways this first son represents the public sinners, the tax collectors, and the prostitutes. With their actions they may say no to take their place at vineyard but the gospel also says that there was room for changing their minds, for reconciliation, for conversion giving them a place in the fields and eventually at the table of the banquet. The second, all diplomacy, “just saying the right thing” kind of guy, all condescending says yes, but doesn’t show up, doesn’t show up to the deed, demonstrating the emptiness of his words.

Empty promises cannot produce that which they promised. They cannot deliver. Such was the issue with many of the Sadducees and Pharisees during Jesus’ time. Behind a facade of orthodoxy and respect for divine prescription and rituals there was a sense of contempt and self-righteousness as they said “yes” with their lips and “no” with their hands: “yes” to the task and “no” to the deed.

Actions speak louder than words and this parable describes that in order to profess our belief in God with words it must be followed by actions. If we are regular Sunday church goers, professing with our lips how much we love God and in the meantime despising our neighbor, that is all what it is… lip service. If we observe a strong devotional life while having contempt for those that do not pray as hard as we, as long as we do, as unwavering as we do, then it’s like a beautiful alabaster vase, it’s magnificent to behold but is simply empty.

This is a matter of exercising, which is the challenge with any fundamental theology, our orthodoxy, to say the right thing; with our orthopraxis, to do the right thing. But to say that this is a black and white issue is simplistic. This is not the good and the bad, hot and cold, east or west because we have all been on either side of the spectrum. This is about being inclusive. This is about knowing and believing that even great, public sinners have an invitation and a chance for redemption… a redemption that empty words, self-righteousness, and lip service cannot and will not deliver.

We are to reveal God in the crucified and in resurrected Jesus… a force for the vulnerable, for the limited, whether physically, mentally or spiritually. We must offer our strength to each other. Let us allow God to be God as we lift up our humanity to Him. Let us take some creative writing and change the end of this parable. “A man had two sons and said to both of them: “My children go out into the vineyard today”. They both reply, “Yes Father I will go”, and so they did, fulfilling out of love their Father’s will.

Uno de los muchos dones que Dios le ha dado a su pueblo es lo que en las escrituras paulinas se conoce como "libre albedrío". Somos libres de elegir. Tenemos la capacidad de determinar nuestras acciones, arrepentirnos y cambiar el curso de nuestra vida. También somos libres de elegir nuestras palabras y de darles significado, seriedad, con nuestras acciones.

Nuestras acciones deben coincidir con nuestras palabras. Nuestras palabras deben estar en armonía con nuestros hechos. Solo así las palabras adquieren significado, comprensión, resonancia y gravedad. Tienen significado y comprensión en la medida en que son tangibles, concretas. Tienen resonancia y gravedad, peso, siempre que puedan ponerse en acción. Solo en tales palabras cobran vida. Solo así la palabra se hace carne.

El evangelio de hoy nos presenta dos palabras dadas. Dos hijos han sido convocados e invitados a trabajar en el viñedo de su padre. El primero da una respuesta clara y negativa ("No lo haré"), sin excusas, sin justificaciones, sin conflicto aparente involucrado. De muchas maneras, este primer hijo representa a los pecadores públicos, los recaudadores de impuestos y las prostitutas. Con sus acciones pueden decir que no para tomar su lugar en la viña, pero el evangelio también

dice que había lugar para cambiar de opinión, para la reconciliación, para la conversión dándoles un lugar en el campo y finalmente en la mesa del banquete. El segundo, todo diplomacia, el tipo de tipo "simplemente diciendo lo correcto", todo condescendiente dice que sí, pero no se presenta, no se presenta a cumplir lo dicho,

demostrando el vacío de sus palabras. Las promesas vacías no pueden producir lo que prometieron. No pueden cumplir. Ese fue el problema con muchos de los saduceos y fariseos durante la época de Jesús. Detrás de una fachada de ortodoxia y respeto por las prescripciones y los rituales divinos, había una sensación de desprecio y auto-rectitud cuando decían "sí" con los labios y "no" con las manos: "sí" a la tarea y "no" a la ejecución de la misma. Las acciones hablan más que las palabras y esta parábola describe que para profesar nuestra creencia en Dios con palabras, debe ir seguida de acciones. Si asistimos regularmente a la iglesia los domingos, profesamos con nuestros labios cuánto amamos a Dios

y mientras tanto despreciamos a nuestro prójimo, eso es todo lo que es... servicio con los labios. “De la boca para afuera.” Si observamos una fuerte vida devocional mientras despreciamos a aquellos que no rezan tanto como nosotros, entonces es como un hermoso jarrón de alabastro, es magnífico para la

vista, pero simplemente está vacío. Se trata de ejercitar, que es el desafío de cualquier teología

fundamental, nuestra ortodoxia, decir lo correcto; con nuestra orto-praxis, hacer lo correcto. Pero decir que se trata de una cuestión en blanco y negro es simplista. Esto no es lo bueno y lo malo, lo caliente y lo frío, ni el este ni el oeste, porque todos hemos estado en ambos lados del espectro. Se trata de ser inclusivos. Se trata de saber y creer que incluso los grandes pecadores públicos tienen una invitación y una oportunidad para la redención... Una redención que las palabras vacías, el creernos mejores y la falta de comprensión no pueden hacer posible la verdad y la justicia.

Debemos revelar a Dios en el Jesús crucificado y resucitado; quien es una fuerza para los vulnerables, para los limitados, ya sea física, mental o espiritualmente. Debemos ofrecer nuestro apoyo el uno al otro. Dejemos que Dios sea Dios al elevar nuestra humanidad hacia Él. Hagamos un ejercicio de escritura creativa y cambiemos el final de esta parábola. “Un hombre tenía dos hijos y les dijo a los dos: “Mis hijos, salgan hoy a la viña”. Ambos respondieron: "Sí Padre, iré", y así lo hicieron, cumpliendo por amor la voluntad de su Padre.

Catechesis: Information vs. In Formation (Extract from article by Jared Dees)

In catechesis we must move beyond information in order to keep kids in formation.

Our goal isn't to instruct experts in the faith. Our goal is to help our students enter into and thrive in a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are forming disciples, not theologians.

If we focus on faith formation rather than faith information, then we will change the way we teach. We can force-feed facts, but facts do not cultivate faith.

Love is first, desire for knowledge is second. Religious education must cultivate an encounter with Christ. When we focus on information, our pedagogy tends to follow a simple pattern of read (watch, listen, etc.) and answer the questions. When we make formation our goal, then we shift the focus to a model of read and reflect. This gives every student the opportunity to personally meditate and pray about what they learn.

This means asking different questions and spending quality class time to lead students in prayer. Religious educators are witnesses first and teachers second. A religious educator must share his or her own testimony alongside the faith they pass on. Faith is not an impersonal set of facts; it is an experience of God's love. We are forming disciples who have been touched by the love of God and freely decide to follow Jesus and embrace the truths of faith.

En la catequesis debemos ir más allá de la información para mantener a los niños en formación.

Nuestro objetivo no es instruir a los expertos en la fe. Nuestra meta es ayudar a nuestros alumnos a entrar y prosperar en una relación con Jesucristo. Estamos formando discípulos, no teólogos.

Si nos centramos en la formación de la fe en lugar de en la información de fe, entonces cambiaremos la forma en que enseñamos. Podemos forzar la alimentación de hechos, pero los hechos no cultivan la fe.

El amor es lo primero, el deseo de conocimiento es segundo. La educación religiosa debe cultivar un encuentro con Cristo. Cuando nos centramos en la información, nuestra pedagogía tiende a seguir un patrón simple de lectura (ver, escuchar, etc.) y responder a las preguntas. Cuando hacemos de la formación nuestro objetivo, entonces cambiamos el enfoque a un modelo de lectura y reflexión. Esto da a cada estudiante la oportunidad de meditar personalmente y orar acerca de lo que aprenden.

Esto significa hacer diferentes preguntas y dedicar tiempo de clase de calidad para guiar a los alumnos en oración. Los educadores religiosos son testigos primero y los maestros en segundo lugar. Un educador religioso debe compartir su propio testimonio junto con la fe que transmiten. La fe no es un conjunto impersonal de hechos; es una experiencia del amor de Dios. Estamos formando discípulos que han sido tocados por el amor de Dios y deciden libremente seguir a Jesús y abrazar las verdades de la fe.

Right of Christian Initiation for Adults

RCIA is designed for adults 17 and older who are considering joining the Catholic Church through celebrating the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The process welcomes adults who have never been baptized or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and those who have been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and need to receive one of the sacraments of initiation. Flu and coronavirus are different viruses, but the way to prevent them is the same:

Boost your immunity—Get your flu shot!

Eat well and exercise

Reduce stress with prayer and spiritual practice

Wear a mask and wash hands often

Practice social distancing
