Aldersgate’s Annual All-Church Conference Meeting

Scheduled For Thursday, December 14, 7:00 pm

Administrative Restructuring – At the November 2016 AUMC Church Conference, a resolution was unanimously approved tasking the Lay Leadership Committee to address a re-structuring of Aldersgate’s administrative leadership/committee structure to improve efficiency, communication, use of time, and coordinated focus to better fulfill AUMC’s ministry and mission goals. Detailed information is on pages 10 & 11 of this newsletter.

Dear Friend in the Messiah,

What to write about … ?

Events in our nation? Shootings, vitriol on the airwaves and in social media, behaviors beyond the pale by leaders and people in power positions … Perhaps it really is time to say less and listen more: to the words of Jesus on how we are to be and live and interact one with another … and about what we as his followers should think and conclude about all of this occurring in our nation. This is not to say we should be silent in the face of injustice and slippage toward insanity as a people. It is, however, to say that it is time to take a

breath, and to sit and soak in the teachings of Jesus, praying his will be done “in my life and in this world.” Come, Lord Jesus.

Advent & Christmas? “Blue” Christmas worship, Living Nativity, Angel Tree Giving, Children’s Christmas Eve Musical, the Coming of Christ and all that can mean for our lives and this world! … Look through this newsletter and find ways to invite others into this

Advent and Christmas journey, and find a place in which you, too, can go deeper. Come, Lord Jesus.

Church Changes? Administrative restructuring proposal much discussed and finally here (To be voted upon at AUMC’s Dec. 14, 7 p.m. Church Conference); Pastor David’s announcement that he is re-retiring effective April 2018; life changes taking people away from us; an all-church study (40 Days of Prayer) announced beginning Jan. 7 and running for six weeks; and our Staff-Parish Relations exploring

steps toward a full-time associate pastor. Come, Lord Jesus.

There’s plenty more to write about. For now, though, I’m led to pray that the Holy Spirit write God’s will and way and Living Word upon my life to direct me through these Bethlehem nights of human denial, of inhumane behavior, of indifference, of change … and INTO

the countless life-giving possibilities offered to you and me through the Christ child. Come, Lord Jesus.

In the assurance of God’s grace …

Pastor Troy

THANK YOU I would like to extend my appreciation to the SonDay Sisters for all their efforts in making the Ladies Christmas Brunch a wonderful outreach to the community. The dozen or so ladies transformed our Family Life Center into a Christmas Cafe, serving a delicious homemade brunch for about 140 ladies. The SonDay Sisters worked many hours as they shared their gifts of hospitality for their Sisters in Christ. For those of you who missed it, Cindy Sollenberger provided a wonderful presentation on Christmas Ornaments.

I also would like to extend our gratitude to the men who served as bus boys and dishwashers: Pastor Floyd Sollenberger, Craig Hatmaker and Brad Diffenbaugh.

The SonDay Sister’s will serve as hostess for the January 27th Veteran’s Café being held at Aldersgate Church. The ladies will be decorating the Family Life Center in patriotic colors and assisting Chef Ken Shapiro with the hot breakfast.

Mark your calendars now as the SonDay Sisters have already circled April 14th for the 2018 Ladies Spring Brunch.

If you like fellowship, enjoy meeting new people and have a heart for hospitality, consider joining the SonDay Sisters. This

group of women meet infrequently, but always have fun when gathered and planning events. To join us for the next meeting,

please contact Carol Diffenbaugh at [email protected] or call 717-737-7923 ext. 104.

Carol Diffenbaugh, Director of Health Ministries

ANGELS ARE IN OUR MIDST

It's time to start thinking of sharing our love with those in need during the Christmas season. The season is not about gifts, but our small tokens of love will put a smile on a child or adult in need during the Christmas season … and hopefully all year! The "Angel Tree" is in the church lobby loaded with "wish ornaments." If you are able, please take 1 or 2, fill out the back tag and place it in the decorated box. Then take the wish tag with you when you are out shopping and return it with the gift by December 13. Please place them in a gift bag - do not wrap the gift. We will be giving to the following agencies:

Silence of Mary's Home New Hope Ministries Allison Hill after school program

Bridge of Hope Shalom House Daystar Village of Hope - Uganda

Our church family is always so generous and I feel blessed to be part of it. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]. Any help with sorting the gifts when they come in is greatly welcome. Thank you!

Pam Caserta

Girlfriends in God will be starting new Bible Studies in January We will kick off the new year with a brunch on January 9 at 9:15 am in room 207. Come join us for a

little fellowship and a chance to look at the new studies being offered. (If able, bring your favorite dish to share.) If you are interested in participating in one of these studies, but can't attend the brunch, please contact the facilitator by January 9. Childcare is provided. Philippians: To Live is Christ, by Nancy McGuirk To Live is Christ is an 8-week, verse-by-verse study on the book of Philippians. The Apostle Paul's letter to the Philippians has been the foundation for a life of contentment and joy to all who have embraced its message over the generations. Paul's secret of contentment is found in his well-known words "to live Is Christ." In this way, he reveals how to rise above the circumstances of life, experience joy amidst adversity, and live with Christ at the center of your lives. Facilitator: Tricia Dovenspike, [email protected] Forgiveness: Breaking the Power of the Past, by Kay Arthur

Forgiveness: Breaking the Power of the Past is a 6 week Bible study and the work is done together in class. Unleash the Healing Power of Forgiveness, this study deals with the difficult questions of forgiveness, including: How can I forgive when the pain is so great? Does forgiving mean I have to forget the past? And, What if I choose not to forgive. As you dig into what the Bible says on this vital topic, you’ll encounter the depths of God’s own mercy and discover how choosing forgiveness can free you to be the person God intends you to be. Facilitator: Cindy Sollenberger, [email protected]

What’s Up Wednesday Schedule

Many of you are enjoying the delicious hot buffets served every Wednesday evening in the Family Life Center from 5:30 pm to 6:15 pm. The four long-term studies (Fast Track Disciple I, Disciple II, Operation Timothy and Jesus in the Gospels) are continuing.

Unanimously Adopted @ AUMC Church Conference, 11/13/16

Charged to Lay Leadership Committee

Movement toward an “Alternative Administrative Ministry Structure” is reactivated.

Lay Leadership Committee is charged with study and proposal formulation to be voted on at a 2017 Aldersgate Church Conference:

Whereas Aldersgate United Methodist Church previously had a partial “alternative ministry structure” in place with trajectory toward further implementation of that structure; and

Whereas this was in concert with The United Methodist Book of Discipline, and by the blessing and guidance of church leadership and the District Superintendent; and

Whereas that trajectory was placed on hold due to significant stewardship, financial and congregation stability issues in 2009, leading Pastor Troy Howell to request at least temporary creation of a Stewardship & Finance Committee to specifically:

Re-structure and establish new procedures/protocols within the treasury, financial accounting, and related administrative protocols of AUMC; and

With the lead pastor develop good stewardship practices and emphasis for ministry, empowering directors toward responsibility in visioning, communication and ministry spending plan leadership; and

Most importantly, work in conjunction with the lead pastor to practice Biblical truths of stewardship by emphasizing and celebrating God’s provision, God’s faithfulness and God’s call for sound stewardship within the body (This representing the primary means of addressing any and all “financial issues”); and

Address the challenge of how to faithfully deal with a $1.9 million building loan debt whose interest charges amounted to more than $100,000 annually, including investigating and prayerfully discerning whether a professionally-run stewardship campaign to address that debt should occur.

Now, whereas the S&F Committee accomplished these intended tasks (including decision to forego a professionally-consulted campaign and instead conduct in-house focuses that have resulted in debt pay-down to $967,000 – a reduction of $900,000 in the last five years),

and whereas the “alternative minimum structure provides for best use of energy and leadership gifts through streamlined communication, visioning, and decision-making; and

Whereas Aldersgate Church under prior pastoral leadership established a “ministry director” structure of leadership as the most effective means of stewarding time, talents, gifts, ministry and witness for a large-membership congregation that continues to serve the body well;

Now be it now resolved that the Lay Leadership Committee of Aldersgate United Methodist Church hereby moves that this body rejoice in the significant gifts hereto, and hereby commit to the future with hope by designating 2017 a time for study and a proposal to establish an “Alternative Administrative Minimum Structure.” Said study and motion will lead to a proposal to reconfigure and/or dissolve existing committee structures (Stewardship & Finance Committee, the Trustees, and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee), with reconfiguration of duties and design to facilitate ministry, ensure leadership communication and accountability, and to maximize focus upon Aldersgate Church’s mission. Said “Alternative Administrative Minimum Structure” may involve any number of possibilities, including a Church Council Leadership Team whose responsibilities would include oversight and directive authority in any or all of the areas of existing committee structure as noted;

Therefore, be it further resolved that the Lead Pastor, the Council Chair, the Lay Leader, and the Lay Leadership Committee beginning in January 2017 study and develop said proposal, in conjunction with the District Superintendent.

United Methodist Discipline Paragraph 246.2 – The church conference, district superintendent and the pastor shall organize and administer the pastoral charge and church according to the policies and plans herein set forth. When the membership size, program scope, mission resources or other circumstances so require, the church conference may, in consultation with and upon approval of the district superintendent, modify the organization plans provided that the provisions of paragraph 242 are observed.

Early in 2017 several church leaders responded to an invitation to join Pastor Troy at an “Alternative Ministry Structure” education and work session led by Rev. Dr. Dennis Otto of the Susquehanna Conference staff.

Lay Leadership Committee has spent considerable time in conversation, reflection and prayer on re-structuring so as to maximize:

Time investment/use of time and timeliness of actions for ministry;

Focused Communication & Discussion, thereby decreasing mis- and delayed-communication;

The Ministry Director structure and the accountability and effectiveness it affords;

Administrative oversight and to precision in decision and action for the fulfillment of Aldersgate Church’s Mission and Vision in Christ: REACHING WITH THE HEART OF GOD FOR THE LIVES OF OUR COMMUNITY, TO MAKE AND GROW DISCIPLES FOR JESUS CHRIST.

Lay Leadership has completed its assigned task and now unanimously places this proposal before the congregation for Aldersgate Church’s Dec. 14, 7 p.m., Church Conference vote.

If adopted, then effective Jan. 1, 2018, Aldersgate Church’s administrative structure of oversight, accountability and fulfillment of AUMC’s vision and mission for ministry will consist of:

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: Potentially 20 individuals receiving reports, conducting oversight, gathering for prayer; initiating directives, and acting on behalf of the entire congregation and our mission.

Executive Council’s expansion from 11 members will be monitored under this two-year pilot, with those serving terms in restructured areas (see below) assuming Council seats.

LAY LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE: Membership of 10 and the lead pastor. This committee continues as the prayer/discernment arm of the Holy Spirit to identify and raise up individuals for terms/seasons of Administrative servant-leadership.

STAFF-PARISH RELATONS COMMITTEE: Membership of 11 and the lead pastor. This committee continues with specific responsibilities of support and accountability of the ministry director staff and model adopted more than one dozen years ago at AUMC. Specific to this committee’s responsibilities is its human resource (HR) functions, including strict confidentiality.

TRUSTEES: (currently 6 members) This administrative area’s responsibilities and work will be incorporated into Executive Council in the interest of maximizing aspects as outlined under “2)” above. Current Trustee chair will continue on Executive Council, leading a Facilities work area on consisting of two others from Trustees who become part of Executive Council, and who will work with the Facilities Director/Manager to ensure adequate “facility for ministry.”

STEWARDSHIP & FINANCE: (currently 6 members) Similarly, this administrative area’s responsibilities will be incorporated into Executive Council in the interest of maximizing aspects as outlined under “2)” above. Three individuals from S&F will become part of Executive Council and a work area that oversees execution of established accountability and procedure structures in financial protocols, accountability checks, and ministry expenditures. All reports and oversight/financial updates and statuses will come to Executive Council.

MISSIONS MINISTRY CORE: (currently 4 members) This area currently does not function as a “committee” but rather a group that helps to listen for and support heart-missions calls of God in and through individuals and groups in the congregation. Three CORE members will be incorporated into Executive Council membership as part of the overall mission and vision decisions.

This Alternative Structure is proposed on a TWO-YEAR PILOT basis, with changes/tweaks being made by Leadership in conjunction with ongoing feedback from Executive Council and the congregational in 2018 and 2019. Such changes may pertain to Executive Council size/membership, readjustment of terms, and recommendations for further revision/restructuring going forward.

The ultimate goal of this restructuring is to ensure the most effective administrative oversight and support of God’s intended mission and purpose for Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Nov. 19, 2017

The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to express our gratitude and love to Pastor David and Linda Watkins as they embark on the next phase of their lives. We appreciate the unending enthusiasm and love of Christ that he shared in his position as our Assistant Pastor and look forward to many years together as parishioners in this wonderful church home. Pastor David’s contribution to the ministry team was invaluable as our church grows in God. We wish them joy as they spend more time traveling and enjoying their family. The gifts and graces he and Linda shared will always be a part of the ongoing story of the Aldersgate family.

Good luck on your future adventures and God bless you,

Jen Starner, Chair, Staff Parish Relations Committee
