EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DUSK1 1

The sun sets over a series of pleasant suburban homes...

A68 Dodge Charger careens around acorner.

INT. OZS HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DUSK2 2

A PAINTING: Grassy meadows and mountaintops.

A BASEBALL floats upward, hovers in mid-air over thepainting, thendrops out of frame.

EXT. OZS HOUSE - FRONT YARD - DUSK3 3

KAYLI (7), Ozs younger sister, cartwheels in the grass.

The Charger pulls into the driveway...

ROBERT (40s), a tall, imposing figure with deteriorating goodlooks, walks up to the house. He waves Kayli away-- hedoesnt want to be bothered.


OZ (18), lies upside down on his couch, throwing the baseball

in the air. Ripped jeans, long hair, dark shades on... Boredout of his mind.

Robert enters.

...Oz ducks in front of the couch, hiding from his father...

Robert doesnt notice Oz as he tosses his jacket on thecouch.

He hurls his briefcase into the fireplace and turns on thegas.

...Oz steals keys from Roberts jacket-

But he makes a noise. Robert turns.

ROBERTJesus, Oz, youre gonna give meanother heart attack.

He grabs Ozs shoulders and shakes him.

ROBERT (CONTD)Im so glad youre home.

Then -

He sees the keys. Hes disappointed.

Robert snatches them back andturns away. He pours a drinkfrom his flask.

OZI need the car.

ROBERTNo. You want the car. And maybe youshould ask before resorting tothievery. You want a car, go and dowhat I tell you.

Oz grabs his glove, turns to leave...

OZYou tell me lotsa things.

Robert turns, pissed.

ROBERTUntil you have a job to drive to,you dont need to drive, period.Get a job, or get a bicycle!

Oz leaves. Robert flicks a match into the fireplace.

EXT. OZS HOUSE - FRONT YARD - CONTINUOUS5 5

Oz walks past Kayli.

KAYLIOz, where are you going? I need togo to gymnastics.

OZNo. You want to go to gymnastics.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DUSK/NIGHT6 6

Oz walks by several suburban houses as the night creeps in...

Vrooom!... A car barrels towards Oz, misses him by inches,then screeches to a stop beside him.

FREDDY (18) pokes his head out the window.

INT. BILLYS CAR - MOMENTS LATER - NIGHT7 7

A bumpy ride. Freddy drives the automatic car with two feet.

Oz rummages through the glove compartment- high schoolPICTURES of Billy, bazooka BUBBLE GUM, and Billys PROOF OFINSURANCE.

OZBilly let you use his car?

FREDDYYeah, well, sorta. I asked him toteach me how to drive or whatever

and he told me to figure it outmyself.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - NIGHT8 8

The car bumps along, alternating between gas and brake.

FREDDY (O.S.)So, you know...

INT. BILLYS CAR - NIGHT9 9

Oz rocks back and forth, looking ill.

OZYou should use one foot, man.

FREDDYI have two feet... theres twopedals. If I can learn how to drivewith two feet, then I can drivetwice as good as everyone else.

Oz looks at the speedometer. Theyre moving around 10 mph,give or take the stop-and-go.

OZJust keep the one foot on the gasand dont take it off.

Pause... Freddy holds his foot steady on the gas.

Their speed rises. They reach 25 mph.

Oz rolls down his window and chills out...

FREDDYHow long do I keep it on there?

OZUntil you want to stop.

FREDDYI want to stop at my house.

OZ(points behind him)

Your house is that way.

FREDDYI know where my house is. Gotta

learn how to drive forward before Ilearn how to drive in reverse.

Oz fiddles with his baseball glove. Then -

OZTheres gonna be a tryout Monday.

FREDDYFor what?

OZFor baseball.

FREDDYYoure gonna try out for baseball?

OZYeah, for the majors.

FREDDYDont you have to be like, good forthat kind of thing?

OZ

I dunno. I guess.FREDDY

Oz leans forward...

OZBut youre left-handed.

Oz notices a girl, RUBY (17), in the second story window ofan upcoming house.

OZ (CONTD)Whend you get new neighbors?

FREDDYThat house was empty this morning.

Freddy leans over the steering wheel to see out the frontwindshield, stepping harder onto the gas pedal.

The car hops a curb and crashes into the mailbox.

Silence.

FRANK (40s), Rubys stepfather rushes over from the moving

van.OZ

Go, man.

The car jumps forward.

OZ (CONTD)Back up!

EXT. RUBYS HOUSE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS10 10

Frank rips Oz out of the car and wrestles him to the ground.

The glove falls on the grass...

FRANKGwen, call the cops!

Freddy ducks behind the steering wheel and locks the door.

...Ruby pokes her head out the window.

FRANK (CONTD)Ruby, call the cops, this is an

emergency!

OZWatch the arm, man!

RUBYLooks like you got it undercontrol, Frank.

FRANKGet yer mother to call the cops!

RUBY

Get yourmother to call the cops.

FRANKSomeones mother better call thecops.

Rubys mother, GWEN (40s) rushes out.

TYLER (4) follows in his pajamas. Gwen tries to control him.

GWENDialing!

TYLERI wanna talk to the cops.

GWENNo, Tyler, go to bed.

Tyler grabs the phone and runs away. Gwen chases him.

FRANKI pay the mortgage on this house,this is my house, and Im not gonna

have some punk kid tear it toshambles before I can move in mydinette table.

INT. BILLYS CAR - CONTINUOUS11 11

Freddy tries to get out of the car, but the driver side dooris stuck next to the mailbox post... He looks out the openpassenger door and sees -

HASKELL (75), frozen in the moonlight, eyes piercing thedarkness... He cradles something in his arms...

Freddy is entranced. Then -

Haskell hurries back to his house.

FRANK(to Oz)

Move to the suburbs Frank, itll begood for the kids, Frank. Youlllove it here Frank.

Freddy snaps out of his trance.

EXT. RUBYS HOUSE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS12 12

Frank pins Oz.

Freddy knocks over the mailbox post by opening the door, hesteps out.

FRANK

The ink isnt even dry on themortgage agreement and Im underhouse invasion from -

Then, Freddy creeps up. He raises his fists, ready tofight...

Frank keeps Oz pinned...

FRANK (CONTD)Gwen, get back in the house!

FREDDY

Id watch it if I were you, man.You dont know who youre messingwith there.

Ruby watches...

FREDDY (CONTD)Thats Oz Ventura, all county, allstate, all... star pitcher. He canthrow a ball so fast that you gottalike squint so your eyes dontcatch fire.

Oz almost smiles back at Freddy. Frank pushes even harder onOz.

FRANKWell, whoop de doo.

Tyler continues to run in the background. Gwen chases.

FREDDYI mean it, hes going pronext week. The majors. Andlike you better get off his

arm else hell sue you forevery last dime.

TYLER(on the phone)

Are you the cops? Do you haveguns? Are they big guns? When

I grow up, Im going to haveloads of guns.

Frank considers this and slowly gets up, freeing Oz.

FRANK (CONTD)And who are you, his manager?

GWENTyler, give me the phone! Imean it!

Frank lumbers towards Freddy. Freddy dodges. Frank runs intothe car.

GWENFrank!

Gwen notices Ruby hanging out the window.

GWEN (CONTD)Ruby, bed! Now!

Ruby sneers at Gwen and recedes into her room.

Then -

Frank grabs the mail box by its post and swings at Freddy.Mail flies everywhere.

Freddy gets hit in the head. He falls out of frame.

FRANKBest school district in the statemy ass!

Tyler gasps, utterly stunned. He points at Frank.

TYLERYou said Ass!

FRANKThis is my house, need to setprecedents, Gwen! People need to

learn, you cant do this kind ofthing at my house!

Gwen chases Tyler in the background.

TYLERAsssssssssssssssss!

Freddy gets up, trying to orient himself.

Oz gets up, sees -

Ruby waving from her upstairs window. In her bra.BAM!

Frank hits Oz upside the head with the mailbox. Oz hits theground.

FRANK(to Ruby)

Put your shirt on for Gods sake!

Freddy rams Frank into a large tree. Then -

... Something rattles in the tree. Loud, disturbing.

... Everyone stops a moment...

Then, the chaos resumes. Freddy wrestles Frank to theground... Hes about to smash his face in, when -

OZFreddy!

Oz runs up to the drivers side. Cant open the door.

Freddy runs to the passenger side and climbs to driversside. Oz runs around to the passenger side and they back up,take off.

Frank stares up at the trembling tree branches...

Ruby watches them drive off. Tyler is looking at the tree.

GWEN(still on the phone)

Ruby! Bedtime! Now!

RUBYTylers up!

INT. RUBYS HOUSE - BEDROOM - NIGHT13 13

The car stops and goes. Brake and gas.

EXT. BILLYS HOUSE - NIGHT15 15

OZKill the engine.

The car glides into the driveway, leaking fluids.

Freddy and Oz sneak off.

BILLY (O.S.)(from inside the house)

Mom, I cant study when youremaking your pina coladas!

As Freddy and Oz walk back to Freddys house -

They see Haskell standing on his porch.

... He stares them down...

FREDDYSomeone should just put him out ofhis misery. You know, like when adog gets old and rabid so they justtake it out to the barn or whateverand put a bullet through its mangyskull.

Pause.

OZThey dont do that.

FREDDYYou dont know, you never had adog.

They stop at Freddys house. Oz shoves his hands in hispockets.

OZHave you seen my glove?

FREDDYI dunno, maybe.

OZI think I left it in the car.

FREDDYYea, whatever. Well get it orsomething.

OZTomorrow?

Freddy looks at Rubys house.

FREDDYI should have burned that housedown yesterday.

Freddy closes one eye. He holds his lighter far in front ofhim, using his perspective to engulf the house in flames.

Then, he leaves Oz alone on the street...

INT. FREDDYS HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY - CONTINUOUS17 17

Freddy enters.

TERRY (40s), Freddys mom, peeks out of the door to her room,wearing a robe.

TERRYFreddy?

FREDDYYeah.

TERRYWhat were you doing out so late?

FREDDYNothing, jeez.

TERRY

Out all hours of the night, dontcall -

FREDDYI dont have a phone.

TERRYHow do I know you didnt get hit bya train or abducted - or worse?

Freddy walks to his room...

TERRY (CONTD)Hold it mister. Come over here andgive me a kiss good night.

He stumbles over...

TERRY (CONTD)Let me see your eyes.

FREDDYWhos Tom?

TERRYFreddy, youre filthy - when wasthe last time you did your laundry?

FREDDY

When was the last time you did mylaundry?

TERRYDo your laundry.

Freddy just blinks.

FREDDYI dont know how.

Dont be a smart ass, go to bed.She turns and walks away.

FREDDYIm not sleepy.

Oz comes up the driveway...

OZKayli?

Kayli sits with her head in her hands.

OZ (CONT'D)Whats up?

She looks up, shes been crying. Oz nudges Kayli.

OZ (CONT'D)Stop that.

KAYLIDaddy wont wake up.

Pause.

Oz sees Roberts silhouette, sitting down, through thewindow.

KAYLI (CONT'D)He was on his chair and I wastrying to wake him up so I couldshow him a front walkover. Whywont he wake up?

OZ

Hes just sleeping.

KAYLIHes not sleeping!

OZKayli, Dads just sleeping reallyhard.

KAYLIHes dead!

OZHes just real tired, okay?

KAYLIThen wake him up, Oz.

Robert lies motionless in his recliner, an empty bottle ofbourbon beside him...

Oz shakes him.

OZRobert.

Oz slaps his face.

Robert looks up at Oz.

OZ

Its fine. Its night time.

ROBERTJust dont let me sleep in, gotwork to do.

OZDont worry, Dad, youve gotnothing.

ROBERTI got you.

Robert quickly falls back into drunken slumber.

Kayli looks up at him with glassy eyes.

OZ(to Kayli)

Cmon, Ill tuck you in.

He lifts her up.

INT. OZ HOUSE - KAYLIS ROOM - NIGHT20 20

Oz puts Kayli down in her bed.

KAYLIOz, are you leaving?

Beat.

OZNo.

KAYLIIm going to be a gymnast.

He pats her on the head and leaves.

INT. FREDDYS HOUSE - LAUNDRY ROOM - NIGHT21 21

A mountain of clothes in the washing machine. Too manyclothes. Freddy shoves it down using all his weight.

He takes off his shirt and throws it on top of the pile.

Oz walks up to the baseball field, holding a bag ofbaseballs...

BACK TO:


Freddy pours a lot of powder detergent on the pile. Too much.

He scratches his head...

BACK TO:


Oz stands on the pitching mound.

He aims at a small hole in the backstop.

He throws a baseball... He misses... Not a very goodpitcher...

Tries again... Misses...

Oz leaves. The baseball field lights turn off.

BACK TO:


Freddy pulls his clothes out of the wash - half wet, halfdry, covered in soap. He throws them across the room one byone until he finds his shirt.

He rings it out and puts it back on.

INT. FREDDYS HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT26 26

Freddy sits down on the couch. He stares blankly. The soundof WASHING MACHINES run through his head.

Freddy sits in the same spot. His EYE twitches. He hasntslept.

Freddy shoves a potato in a TRUCKs tailpipe.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY29 29

Freddy walks on down the street with a baseball bat.

He passes another house. A MAN walks out to pick up hisnewspaper.

Freddy snatches the paper and throws it into the street.

He walks on...

Behind him, the truck with the potato starts up. It stallsand bucks forward...

He walks up to a lawn littered with kids bikes and beats oneof the bikes with his bat. Children pour out the front doorand chase Freddy down the street.

EXT. RUBYS HOUSE - FRONT YARD - DAY30 30

Ruby examines herself in the side-view mirror of the movingtruck. She uses a pair of scissors to cut her shirt a fewinches shorter.

FREDDY (O.S.)See something you like?

She jumps... Freddy is standing right behind her.

She backs away.

RUBYYou scared the shit out of me. Hey,I saw you last night. That was somefancy driving.

FREDDYYeah. So what, you new?

RUBYWhat?

He walks forward, trips up on his untied shoe laces.

FREDDYI dont know you, yknow... so, younew, or what?

Ruby looks down at his shoes, Freddy kneels to tie hie shoe.He cant do it...

FREDDYI think Ida known you if you werehere and you werent new.

RUBYWell, who are you?

FREDDYOh yeah, me, Im Freddy.

Crudely written in sharpie on his shirt: FREDDY.

RUBY

I see. Well, Freddy, you livearound here?

FREDDYRight next door.

He cant seem to get his shoes tied...

RUBYHere.

Ruby sits down and ties his shoes.

In the background, Tyler tries to throw a rope around a treebranch to make a swing.

RUBY (CONTD)Loop dee loop and tie them up.Pull it tight and then get up.

She undoes them.

RUBY (CONTD)Now you do it.

Freddy kneels down, but just stares blankly at his shoes...Frank walks up behind Freddy -

- Holding a stack of boxes so high it covers his face. Hewears a cut-off shirt. His arms look bigger, scarier... Bigtufts of shoulder hair. The mailbox is tucked under his arm.

Freddy shoves his laces in his shoes and stands up.

RUBYGod, Frank, Im helping my newunfortunate friend tie his shoes.

She grabs Freddys hand.

FRANKCut the shit and grab some boxes,youve been dragging ass allmorning.

RUBYFine, you dont want me to makefriends then I wont make friends.

She drops Freddys hand. Freddy looks hurt.

RUBY (CONT'D)Hey Freddy, my moms new husbandsays to screw off.

She grabs a box from the top of Franks stack and stomps off.

FREDDYOk, well, Ill see you later...around... Ruby.

Frank grimaces a smile, sweat streaming.

He puffs out his chest...

FRANKFreddy, is it?

Silence.

FRANK (CONT'D)That was you last night, wasnt it,neighbor? But I know, I know, thecar, the mailbox... it was all amistake, Right? An accident?

Frank motions to the mailbox.

FRANK (CONTD)Accidents happen. We dont want toget off on the wrong foot becauseof an accident.

Freddy leaves and pushes the mailbox over.

Freddy mumbles something, wanders off...

INT. RUBYS HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY31 31

Ruby throws the box on the floor. Gwen stands over her.

GWENWhat are you wearing?

Ruby lets out a stressed sigh and looks up at Gwen.

RUBYIm, uh, wearing clothes.

GWEN

Dont you think its a bit... lewd?

Silence. Ruby shrugs.

GWEN (CONTD)Didnt we just go buy you some newclothes- something more appropriatefor a fifteen year old girl.

RUBYMy school uniform?

GWEN

At least its tasteful.

Gwen holds out a telephone. Ruby perks up.

GWEN (CONTD)Now, Im giving this back on onecondition. Answer when we call you,ok?

Ruby grabs at the phone, but Gwen pulls it away.

GWEN (CONTD)

Ok?RUBY

Does this mean Im not grounded?

GWENYoure on probation.

She hands Ruby her cell phone. Ruby hurries outside.

Ruby walks by as Tyler swings from the tree rope. The ropesnaps.

The rope has been gnawed in two... He looks up at the tree...

Gwen walks outside the house.

Tyler runs up to Gwen.

(Takes a deep breath)Mommy!

GWENYes, Tyler.

TYLERCan I kill it?

TYLERThe monster in the tree!

Gwen fixes the box so she can see his face.

GWENYou can try.

Gwen pats the top of the box and Tyler runs off...

Wagnerplays over the stereo...

ZOOM OUT: Reveal more planes, side by side, suspended byfishing wire from the ceiling.

Oz tears his room apart, looking for something...

He scratches his head and grabs a piece of paper off hisdesk, a waiver.

Oz walks away.

Freddy walks up to the front door as Oz walks out from theside of the house...

Freddy rummages through the cabinets, trashing stuff,devouring food. He finds a potato and puts it in his backpocket.

Robert tops off his glass.

Freddy breaks one of the little golden men off a trophy,

sticks it in a model plane, and throws the plane at the wall.

He looks out at Roberts leg protruding from the recliner...

And hops out the window...


Ruby walks across the street, on her phone... It rings.

RUBYS FATHER (O.S.)Hello.

Sounds of children playing in a park can be heard on theline.

RUBYDaddy? Hi!

RUBYS FATHER (O.S.)Ruby? Oh, hey kiddo, Im kinda tiedup here at the-

RUBY(venting)

I hate it here, this place totallyblows, I wish I was back home.Cant I just stay with you?

CHILD (O.S.)Daddy, I want to go on the swings.

RUBYS FATHER (O.S.)(in a kind voice to thechild)

RUBYS FATHER (O.S.)Later, Ruby.

Ruby throws the phone on the ground. She picks it up.

The screen is shattered. She throws it in a trash can.

... A CAR passes. Ruby sticks out her thumb, trying to hitcha ride. She waits for another.

Oz walks down the street, towards her.

OZYoure not gonna have much luck.

RUBYWhats that supposed to mean?

OZLook around you. People here drivetheir cars straight into thegarage, close the door and shut out

the world. They sure as hell arentgonna stop for you.

RUBYTen bucks says I get a ride.

The MONSTER falls to the ground. Its a bizarre mix of possumand bulldog raccoon; with a snout, a lion-like mane, longclaws, and sharp teeth.

Its dead.

RUBYGood shot.

Ruby hugs Frank.

FRANKI wonder what it is.

RUBYA monster.

Billy drives up in his car. He signals to Ruby.
