Once upon a time, in Charleston, South Carolina, there lived a beautiful princess. Her name was Nadya.

Princess Nadya was in 2nd grade at Burns Elementary School. She loved going to school and was a great student who was eager to learn and well-behaved.

Go, Bears! GRRRR!

Nadya especially loved going to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays because she got to spend time with her faithful friend, Laura!

Every Tuesday and Thursday, just after the Pledge of Allegiance and the Morning Announcements were made, Princess Nadya and Laura would meet in a room that was far, far away from her classroom.

After a hug and a few moments to catch up, they would jump right in. Because Laura got to the room before Princess Nadya, she always had a question ready for Princess Nadya to answer.

Sometimes the question would be about how Princess Nadya spent her weekend.

And, sometimes the question would be about the weather.

Other times, the questions would be about Princess Nadya and what she liked and didn’t like to do.

After answering questions and doing a word game, Princess Nadya and Laura would read together. What wonderful stories they read!

Next, they read…

And…

Princess Nadya and Laura kept reading, more and more books. It was so much fun to be together! Each time they met, they read more. They read about a crafty fox and a greedy crow in “The Fox and Crow.”

They read about “The Monster Under the Bed.”

But, it wasn’t really a monster after all.

Princess Nadya and Laura needed a break from scary books after that, so they started reading about “Hot Deserts.”

Princess Nadya already knew so much about deserts!

After the lizards and the kangaroo rats and the camels in the desert, Princess Nadya and Laura were ready for something a little bit closer to home. So they read “A Chick Grows Up” for their next book!

Then there was a big surprise! Some baby chicks actually came to class! They were fluffy and black. They were cute and soft. They pecked and squeaked and stretched and tap-danced with their feet. Princess Nadya even got to hold one of the chicks!

But even after all that excitement, Princess Nadya and Laura kept reading. They read four more books and the books got harder each time.

They were reading books so fast and so well, that they began reading a chapter book and it took them all the way to the end of their time together.

Princess Nadya didn’t want Book Buddies to end because she loved reading books with Laura. She wasn’t sure if she should be sad or mad, but Laura told her not to worry, and that she had a special surprise for her so that they would always remember their time together. Can you guess what that surprise was?
