ATHS MISSION AND PURPOSE

Mission

To recognize and achieve excellence amongst Latinos through scholarship, to

help render service, and to promote leadership in students.

Purposes

To serve its membership in ways which will contribute to the members’

leadership growth, scholarship, and service opportunities.

To promote excellence in Latino students.

To establish a presence of the Latino cultures on campus.

To strengthen our Latino backgrounds.

ADELA DE LA TORREDr. de la Torre received her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1982 from

the University of California, Berkeley.

Her research interests include: border/immigration policies, health-care access/finance

issues, Latina/o health, risk and cultural factors associated with HIV/AIDS transmission and

Latino childhood obesity prevention.

She is a member of the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse, former Chair

of the board and current and founding board member of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy

California, and a co-Director of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research.

Currently: Director of the Center for Transnational Health at the University of California,

Davis and is a Professor for the Chicana/o Studies Department, at the University of

California, Davis
