VOLUME 10 ISSUE 1

Greetings from the great Halls of Learning,

Starfleet Academy!

From the Principal’s Office It is with a heavy heart that I begin this article for the first quarter of 2016. I lost a dear friend who was more like a son, especially since my daughter and he were only three days apart in age.

I remember nine years ago when I took over Wayne’s du-ties as Academy Commandant, when he said, “Now, if you need any help, don’t hesitate to holler.” Between he, Carol Thompson and Marlene Miller, I was able to keep up my duties and, if I felt overwhelmed, they had the right words to keep me going.

I met Wayne for the first time at Niagara’s 2015 IC. I re-member the first thing I said when we met was, “What did you do to your beautiful hair?” We laughed and I got a huge bear hug. I know many of you will miss him, but for me, he will always be here in spirit.

With this said, it is hard to believe that we are nearing the half mark of 2016. Soon, we’ll be hearing about who will be running for CS and who they choose for their EC, one being the SFA Commandant. After nine years, I’m ready to hand over the key to the ‘Dant washroom and hopefully someone will finally assign a parking spot closer to the Academy than the one I had. I know I need the exercise, but sheesh!

We are all very busy with our Academy duties, some with a much larger load than others, but the Academy is run-ning and strong and the “Boss Lady” has not left, yet.

Have a beautiful summer.

Admiral Peg Pellerin, SFA Commandant [email protected] 1-888-734-8735 EXT. x705 Happiness is a choice, today I will choose to be happy.

THE ACADEMY MONITOR

Wayne Lee Killough, Jr. October 18, 1976 – April 16, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvSv04iUtDI&feature=share for an online tribute to Robyn Hunter

We lost Fleet Admiral Wayne Lee Killough, Jr. late Saturday night, April 16, 2015, in hospital, due to com-plications from recent surgery. The news of his passing rocked STARFLEET, his coworkers at Capgemini, and his fellow stage performers in the Gay community.

Wayne was a multi-faceted and multi-talented person, giving his best to the organizations he was pas-sionate about. He was kind, attentive, and had a ready smile for his many friends, even though he suffered from health problems, from the loss of dear friends and family, and suffered abuse from strangers who objected to his lifestyle.

The last few months were emotionally and physically hard on him, but he unselfishly gave of himself to STARFLEET and to the Miss Gay Missouri pageants held in Springfield, Missouri. As a female impersona-tor, he often danced and lip-synched on stage. He won the title of Miss Missouri Continental Plus in 2011 under the persona of Robyn Hunter, which was also the persona he performed with.

He was a skilled IT troubleshooter, and worked with Capgemini, as well as lent his skills to the Academy

Website team.

Wayne served STARFLEET with honor and dedication in every position he held, including its highest offic-es. When it came to STARFLEET he always did what he thought was in the best interests of the Fleet, and his passing is a great loss to every member of this organization.

Wayne joined Academy in 1997, assuming the Directorship of STARFLEET Academy College of Medicine (SACOM). Over the 19 years he served in Academy, he helped develop a number of Colleges and pro-grams, and held positions at every level, including that of Academy Commandant. He still administered SACOM and the Academy Degree Program until his death. He was expecting to return full-time to Acade-my after his term as Commander, STARFLEET. Since he was shy 10 credits to obtain his 4000 Boothby, and would have reached that goal in the near future, Academy has renamed the 4000 Boothby to the Wayne Lee Killough, Jr. Memorial Boothby.

The following obituary appeared in the local newspaper and online:

Wayne Lee Killough, Jr., age 39, of Palestine passed away April 17, 2016 in Austin. He was born October 18, 1976 in Pasadena to parents, Wayne Lee Killough, Sr. and Cheryl Marie Dauzat Killough. Wayne was employed as a computer analyst for Capgemini. He graduated in 1996 as valedictorian of Dubach High School and then continued his education at Stephen F. Austin State University earning a Bachelor of Busi-ness Degree in 2015.

Wayne is survived by his father, Wayne Lee Killough, Sr. of Latexo; sister, Sherry Coleman and husband, William of Little Rock, Arkansas; nieces and nephews, Cody Colvin and wife, Christy of West Monroe, La, Lisa and Aaron Ockerman of Summerfield, La.; great-nieces and nephews, Meredith, Fisher, Ryland and soon to arrive Farrah Ockerman; aunts and uncles, Linda Poston of Anacoca, La., Terri Santiago and hus-band, Albert of San Diego, CA, Dale Eaton and husband, David of LaPorte, and Dallas Dauzat and wife, Darlene of Anacoca, La.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by mother, Cheryl Killough and grandparents, Jeff Lee and Faye Killough and Dallas and Enola Dauzat.

Funeral Services for Wayne Lee Killough, Jr. were held Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Father Peter McGrath officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memo-rial Park.

There are no adequate words that can fully describe who Wayne was, or what he meant to us that knew him. He will be forever missed and mourned.

..."Unto God's gracious mercy and protection we commit our departed friend. Bless Wayne and keep him. The Lord make his face to shine upon Wayne, and be gracious unto him. The Lord lift up His countenance upon

Wayne and give him peace, both now and evermore. Amen"

Hello everyone.

Some of you may remember an award I started about

three years ago, called the Cadet Star Award. For

those of you who don't remember, let me refresh

your memories.

Cadets (6 to 18 yrs of age) who take courses from

the college offerings within the Institute of Cadet

Studies must complete a college with Honors &/or

Distinctions. When doing so, they receive a

congratulatory letter from myself as well as a special

certificate and a gold star pin. They can complete as

many colleges as they want, earning more letters,

certificates and pins.

If a cadet completes any college within the Adult

Institutes with Honors and/or Distinctions and only 1

Pass, the cadet will also earn the Cadet Star Award.

Some of the older cadets (13 to 18) have never

attempted the colleges within the adult institutes

because they didn't know they were allowed to. So,

please pass this on to your cadet members.

I do hope with these incentives, that we start seeing

more of our younger members start getting involved

at STARFLEET Academy.

CADET STAR AWARDS

Congratulations to Emma Bayonet for completing

both the Cadet Vulcan Academy of Science and

College of Pokemon.

Congratulations to Darin Debrestian for complet-

ing the College of Pokemon.

Remember, those of you who direct Cadet

Colleges, that when you have a Cadet who has

fully completed a Cadet College with Honors

and/or Distinctions to let me know so I can send

that Cadet the same Award.

They can earn as many Star awards as there are

Cadet Colleges.

I'd love to see a Cadet weighed down by loads of

star pins!

Continued…..

Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons – a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. The series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores, providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics and the environment.

“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager – CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek's next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”

CBS All Access offers its customers more than 7,500 episodes from the current television season, previous seasons and classic shows on demand nationwide, as well as the ability to stream local CBS stations live in more than 110 markets. Subscribers can use the service online and across devices via CBS.com, the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well as on connected devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku players and Roku TV, with more connected devices to come.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to

be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its in-ception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

Star Trek, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Almost half a century later, the Star Trek television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

FROM THE EDITOR

If you have read this issue through, you have noticed at least

two things: This issue is late—very late, and Academy has

been insanely busy this year so far with personnel changes,

Leaves of Absence, the closure of some Colleges and the

opening of new Colleges.

We are in need of a permanent Newsletter Editor. The Edi-

tor must have some experience creating newsletters. Alt-

hough this issue was created in Publisher, an Editor may use

Word or Open Office to create newsletters. Other formats will

be considered if the program is low-cost or freely down-

loadable, so that others can edit the copy, if needed.

Most of the content is provided by faculty members, so the

position consists mostly of layout.
