TEACHER GRANTS $91,198The Endowment awarded 23 grants to teachers at all four schools to encourage innovation in teaching.

FUND-A-NEED $159,270This year’s Fund-a-Need, Investing in the Well-Being of LBUSD Students, will help create an emotional support network for all four schools.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE $50,000A $500,000 Endowment investment over 10 years advances district-wide foreign language instruction.

HEXBERG FAMILY FOUNDATION FOR LBHS ATHLETICS $50,000The "Muscle Beach" weight training wall will expand weight training for all high school athletes. Additional funds will go to gym upgrades.

ROCKET READY $50,000The Endowment's gift funded 25+ classroom projects in the pilot of the teacher development program, which focuses on project-based learning.

It’s not easy being a kid today. At this year’s Dinner Dance, guests raised their bid cards for an important new initiative. The 2017 Fund-a-Need, Investing in the Well-Being of LBUSD Students, will help the district establish an emotional support network for students at all four schools. A new Director of Student Support, two Student Support Specialists, and additional interns will help students manage daily stress and anxiety, as well as depression and more serious mental health issues.100% of the money raised is funding this initiative.

HEXBERG FAMILY FOUNDATIONCHAMPIONS OF LBHS ATHLETICS

In the last five years, the Hexberg Family Foundation has invested $210,000 in LBHS Athletics. SchoolPower has worked closely with school leaders to fund high priority projects that honor the Hexbergs’ only request -- to impact as many student athletes as possible.

Last year’s Hexberg donation was instrumental in funding two state-of-the-art scoreboards: one for the new athletic field at LBHS and one at the pool. Multiple boys and girls teams -- including soccer, water polo, track, swimming and football -- have benefited.

This year’s investment, a new outdoor training wall referred to as “Muscle Beach,” addresses the high demand of weight training from all sports. According to Athletic Director Lance Neal, “The Muscle Beach addition to our strength and conditioning facility will allow us to train double the athletes we are able to train now. It is going to have a major impact on our athletic program.” More high school athletes will experience the performance and safety benefits of a robust weight training program. Additional funds will upgrade LBHS gym facilities used by all students.

The Endowment is a separate charitable foundation that complements School-Power. It advances the same goals by providing a reliable long-term income stream for the present and future of Laguna Beach schools. Thanks to the community’s generosity, as well as SchoolPower’s annual contribution, the Endowment has grown to $3.5 million.

ROCKET READYThis year, The Endowment funded $50,000 for LBUSD’s Rocket Ready teacher develop-ment program, which focuses on project-based learning. The gift funded 25+ classroom projects in the pilot program.

Mike Morrison, LBUSD’s Chief Technology Officer, developed the program. “We set an audacious goal of each teacher changing the world with their students by solving a real world problem,” he said.

This innovative program could have nation-wide impact as other districts adopt our Rocket Ready model. “The work that Laguna Beach is doing with Rocket Ready is literally reimagining the role of professional develop-ment in education,” said Jon Corippo, Direc-tor of Academic Innovation at Cue, a non-profit educational corporation.
