\amm'sScarletLettersThe ninety-third issue of VAM-

PIRELLA continued theupswing that has become evi-

dent in the past few months. The ap-pearance of typeset balloons and cap-tions was a slick touch, but the tradi-tionalist in me cries out for thehandlettering. But the typesettinghas really improved the magazine'soverall look. This issue's Vampi tale was

author's Rich Margopoulos' best ef-

fort since he undertook the series. Not only that, but the storycame to alogical conclusion for once.Margopoulos also seems to be tryingto get Vampi's head, finally. I onlywish that he wouldmake some effortin researching Vampi lore. SaraGranville's son was not killed byVampi. He recovered in issue #26,and then saved Vampi's life in issue#27. This is a minor point, I suppose, and I won't let it interferein an other-wise enjoyable story.Rudy Nebres' art on the Vampi

story was nothing short of stupen-dous. I am willing to bet that witheach passing issue, Nebres is win-ning more and more fans from all

those avid Jose Gonzalez freaks."Encore for Anubia" wasn't quite

as good aB the previous Pantha in-stallment. Anubis is getting to be abit of a bore, and Pantha deservesbetter. On the plus side, however, I

am glad that someone finallyremembered that our panther girl

loses her clothes every time shechanges to oat form. But I am at aloss to understand how Panthamanages to keep her jewelry on. Infact, I don't understand how shemanaged to keep this issue'scostume on under any cir-cumstances. It must have been heldin place by sheer will power alone!

BRIAN CADENCincinnati, Oh.

I have been collecting VAM-PIRELLA since the first issue. Infact, I have a "vast" library of VAM-PIRELLA material. So, when I saythat in that time Warren Publishinghas put out some terrific magazines,I know of what I am speaking. Thelast few issues, however, have notbeen that good. Actually, the last fewissues stink! I even keep themseparately from my other VAM-PLRELLA's so they don't ruin themby association. One thing that particularly

disturbs me are all the references topast issues. If I didn't have thosemagazines I wouldn't even be able toread VAMFIRELLA intelligently! If

each Vampi epic can't stand on its

own and still be consistent with thepast, then it's time to get a newwriter!

JOHN JOHNSONS.L.C., Utah

I have just finished reading VAM-FIRELLA #93 with mixed feelingBbecause the scripts and the artworkwere good in all the features exceptthe lead one...VAMPLRELLA.Rudy Nebres continues to do a

mediocre job in rendering Vampi. Not only that, but he hasgoneback toleaving out Vampi's birthmark. Asimple comparison among thevarious artists who have illustratedVampi shows he is the poorest of all. I

find reader comments in the letters

pages praising Nebres to be puzzl-ing. To say that we will adjust toNebres' style after being used to theexcellent renderings of other artists,

such as Jose Gonzalez, is rather like

saying that Phyllis Diller is an accep-table substitute for Bo Derek.Once it used to be that the plot Of a

VAMPLRELLA story could carry it

offnomatterwhat the renderingwaslike. But, lately, the scriptsthemselves have been starting toslip. Let me give this as an example:Sara Granville complains thatVampikilled Pendragon's grandson, but in"reality" Vampi only partially drain-ed him. He is seen alive in VAM-PIRELLA #27. Also, I find that Vam-pi's blood-lust has accelerated to newheights. In the past Vampi wasusually satisfied after draining oneperson. Itwasonlywhenshewasdrugg-ed of or under water that she neededmore blood. In issue #93, Vampisucks at least two people dry beforeshe even gets to Sara Granville.

STEPHEN BECKERPasadena, Calif.

I just recently started readingVAMPLRELLA, and I think it is oneof the best magazines being publish-ed anywhere in the world today! Theillustration on the VAMFIRELLAseries is super and the writing is

good as well. But the thingthat reallyattractedme to themagazine was thePantha series. Leo Duranona andAlfredo Alcala did a fantastic job inpencilling and inking the art respec-tively. Not only that, but I think thatRich Margopoulos is a talented andcreative writer!Keep up the good work!

ADAM ENGLANDWoodland Hills. Calif.

VAMPntELLA #92 and #93 wereboth marvelous! Cryssie Collins is asensational new character. I love herability to transform herBelf into ademon and the way she controlsother demons. Vampi and Cryssiewill make a terrific new team, and I

look forward to seeing much muchmore of these two dynamic damselsin the future. Now that Vampi is

single I hope you have her dating lots

of new guys.WILSON RIVERA

Brooklyn, N.Y.

Naturally the first thing thatstruck me about VAMPLRELLA #93was the cover. I didn't like itbecause I

feel that the cover of VAMPIRELLAshould always feature VAM-FIRELLA herself. On the plus side, "Apocalypse Inc.

"

was further proof that RichMargopoulos has found his place asVampi's scripter. Margopoulos hasmanaged to give the reader some in-

teresting plot twists and a few nicesupernatural settings, I am glad thatshewas given a "scientific' ' opponentin the person of Major Aranjo. I amalso glad to see a new emphasis onthe darker side of Vampi's character.I feel that it is necessary to remindusconstantly that Vampi really is abizarre alien and not a normal ter-ran. Rudy Nebres art on the VAM-PIRELLA strip is coming along, although I am still not satisfied withthe way he proportions some of thebodies he draws.Rich Margopoulos was back in

form with the Pantha story, "Encorefor Anubis." Here Margopoulosmanaged toprovideatautand excitingyarn in which the Anubis characterwas somewhat more menacing thanin his last appearance."Cobra Goddess" seemed to be a

pointless effort, and the less saidabout it the better.

They say that people learn fromthe mistakes they make, butN.B.C., Chrysler and WarrenPublishing are proof that largecompanies definitely don't.During the latter half of the

nineteen-sixties, WarrenPublishing slithered into anabysmal rut. After realizing that it

was in serious danger of becominga company that was a "has been,"Warren Publishing enacted a newstrategy of printing originalmaterial by new writers and ar-tists. The result was high qualitycomics. Now that this deluge of reprints

haB receded, I hope to see a newera of high quality comics at War-ren Publishing once again!
