Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you for all your support over another busy half term at West Lodge. I would also like to thank the Governors for their continued challenge and support. The staff at West Lodge have worked incredibly hard throughout the term to ensure high quality learning experiences for the children and I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment. We have enjoyed many exciting experiences this term including trips to Windsor Castle, St Pauls’ Cathedral and to see Wicked in the West End. Also, Year 5 visited an architecture firm in Central London - this will form the basis for an exciting technology project after Easter. The term culminated in a wonderful performance of Dream On (Year 5’s interpretation of Midsummer Night’s Dream). All the children and staff worked incredibly hard and produced a great show – worthy of a place on the stage at The Globe! This term we had a teaching and learning review which involved two Local Authority advisers and West Lodge Governors. They spent the morning involved in learning walks reviewing the teaching and learning of Maths and English as well as scrutinising work and interviewing pupils. The full report from the visit is on the school website but key summary points are:
West Lodge is a high performing school. It has performed well in public tests over a number of years, and the local authority
supports the view that it is currently outstanding using the Ofsted framework as the benchmark.
In developing the curriculum, the school has taken significant steps to balance the restrictions of the timetable with the need to promote a balanced curriculum which has both breadth and depth and which promotes greater depth in learning for pupils of different abilities.
The challenge now for the school is for leaders to be able to sustain the high quality teaching, learning and assessment, and the well-focused interventions, within the context of rapidly increasing needs and changes within the staff and leadership.
You will find the term dates for the Summer Term alongside this newsletter. Please note that on Friday 20
th July, we will be holding a
drop-in afternoon tea for Mrs Grant. This will be an opportunity for parents to say farewell to Mrs Grant. Earlier this term we held interviews for the post of Deputy Headteacher (Inclusion). I am happy to announce that we have appointed Mrs Kathy-Ann McClean, who is currently a Deputy Headteacher in Brent and has vast experience within the field of SEND. We look forward to her joining the team in September.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter break.
Jim Dees

OPAL and Recipe for Change Open Day
On Tuesday 13th
March West Lodge hosted an open day for a number of local schools to share the work we have done on OPAL and
Recipe for Change. Fifty visitors from across Harrow Schools, as well as the Global Brand Director of Unilever, National Leadership
Consultant and Early Years specialist Ruth Swailes and both Neil Coleman from OPAL and Paul Aagaard from Recipe for Change joined
us for a morning of talks which included a presentation from Mr Dees and Miss Rolnick about our journey so far. At lunchtime our guests
visited the dining room and the playground, to see the changes that we have made and to talk to the children about their lunchtime
experiences. Our visitors enjoyed a delicious school lunch and ate it from our super times tables plates! The visitors were very
impressed with the new systems we have put in place in the dining room. They commented on how calm it was and how much it felt like
a real restaurant. Others noted how much fun the children were having on the playground with the pallets, cable drums, saucepans and
other loose parts. It was a very proud day for us at West Lodge! We are in need of more items for the children to play with. We are very
short of suitcases and kitchen equipment (pots, pans, baking trays etc.) as well as fabric. Please bring in any items you may have after
the Easter break.
Science & Technology Week The whole school was buzzing for Science week this term with our added focus on STEM. It was wonderful to see the children so engaged with their STEM challenges. We had all sorts of activities from building structures out of spaghetti and marshmallows, to designing rockets and learning about air resistance. An extra big thank you must be said to all the children who brought in their homework posters on exploration and discovery - it looks like you all had a lot of fun!
Update from Mrs Thomson We are now officially into Spring. The plants and flowers start to
grow and illnesses and infections work their way through school.
Currently at West Lodge Primary and most common for this time
of year is Chicken Pox – has your child been “off colour” or
“under the weather” for a few days, then woken up with spots
that look like tiny little blisters? Chicken pox is an enforced
absence of five days minimum or until the spots are all dry and
crusted over.
Parvovirus commonly known as “slapped cheek” because it
looks as if one or both cheeks have been slapped. Most children
have this without even realising – there is no exclusion because
during the time the child is contagious they have no symptoms,
the rash on the face comes out at the end. Occasionally they
may have a temperature in which case we would call and ask
you to collect your child.
Recently, we have had a couple of cases of Scarlet Fever, which
is quite hard to diagnose. As a precaution Doctor’s prescribe a
course of antibiotics. Children need to be off school for five days
if this is diagnosed.
At any time of year school’s experience Tummy Bugs and
Diarrhoea and Vomiting. We enforce a 2 day (48 hour absence)
as a form of infection control.
If your child is unwell, please do not try to diagnose their illness,
seek professional advice from your local pharmacy, G.P. or
Urgent Care Centre.
Foodbank Mondays Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the ‘Foodbank Mondays’ appeal once again this term. As before, we have had an overwhelming response. Through one small idea from the Lower School Council, we have been able to make the lives of many families in need, a little more festive this Easter.
Swimming This term we have focused on promoting awareness of swimming and its importance from both a healthy living and water safety perspective. We have been actively working hard to form strong community links with Highgrove swimming staff and this has greatly increased the number of Year 4 children successfully achieving the National Curriculum expectation. With summer on its way, we would urge you to look into some of the great swimming opportunities and holiday crash courses available at Highgrove and other local pools.
World Book Day On Monday 5th of March, children and staff across the school once again celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite book characters. Great efforts were made with extravagant costumes and many classic and recognisable characters graced the corridors and classrooms of West Lodge Primary School. The week also saw another successful book fair hosted by FOWLS, in which children were able to see and purchase the newest books by their favourite authors.
Upper School Council
The new Upper School Council was recently elected.
Pearl: Parnita Prasad and Samir Cheema
Ruby: Ziyana Patel and Cameron Bristow
Topaz: Aliza Rizvi and Aaryan Bhosale Amber: Aditi Patel and Michael Mullins
Aquamarine: Amal Khurram and Rowan Brooks
Emerald: Udayasree Gullapalli and Niall Vekaria
Amethyst: Evie Allsop and Milun Patel
Diamond: Fizzah Changez and Umair Khan
Sapphire: Victoria De Magtige and Jack Ryan
Taking their roles very seriously, the councillors were involved in
the appointment of our new Deputy Head. They posed some
delightful questions and generated relevant insights, from their
youthful point of view, to inform the recruitment process. They
will also be leading an assembly next term to introduce
themselves to the Upper School children.
Learning Study at West Lodge Over the Spring Term, teachers have been exploring bar modelling and how this can help children solve problems. It has been a year since staff were introduced to this strategy and it is now taught regularly throughout the school. Observations of children during their maths lessons has provided us with evidence that children are able to use the bar model effectively and, in Key Stage 2, are beginning to create their own models to help identify what operation is needed to solve a problem. We are going to continue to explore bar modelling to refine our practice and are now focusing on how physical resources can be used to support problem solving.
Y1 Visit to Windsor Castle On 15
th March Year 1 visited Windsor Castle, one of the Queen’s
favourite homes, as part of their Kings and Queens topic. The children visited St George’s Chapel where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry in May this year, they walked around the State Apartments, they looked at Queen Mary’s dolls house and they watched the Changing of the Guards ceremony. During the visit they also participated in a workshop called ‘Whose Royal Home is This?’. The children learnt about the Castle as a working palace of the Monarch and experienced how royalty and their servants lived in Victorian times compared to the present day. The highlight of the session was role playing the dubbing ceremony of a knight.
Parents’ Forum & Parental Engagement We have held two parents’ forums this term. In January the focus was on statutory assessments, league tables and our plans for the adventure playground. On Friday 9th March we looked at developing parental engagement and income generation. Overall, we have seen an increase in the number of attendees at our parents’ forum this year, however at some forums there has been low attendance. We want to ensure that these events are to be purposeful and provide the opportunity for parents to have a greater voice in the life of the school. After each forum we take forward ideas raised to the Governors. At the most recent forum we discussed evaluating all forms of parental engagement – with a view to continually building the capacity of our community. One idea from the forum was develop the concept of class representatives – this is something we will look into during the Summer Term. With regards to income generation it was suggested that we build a database of community skills that we could tap into and also to utilise the token scheme at local supermarkets – both of these we will look into during the Summer Term as well. Our next Parents’ Forum is on Friday 4
th May, for this forum we
would like to ask for suggestions for the theme. Please email [email protected] with your suggestions for the focus (place Parents’ Forum in the subject header), by Friday 20
th
April.
Sport Relief All at West Lodge had a fantastic sporty week to raise money for
Sport Relief. Throughout the week the children competed different ‘5 minute Daley challenges,’ set by Olympic Athlete Tom
Daley. On Friday, the whole school participated in a range of sporting activities, from Beat the Goalie to Basketball Shot! All of
these activities were organised and run by West Lodge pupils between Years 4-6, which was a great added experience to the day. Overall, the school managed to raise over £400, which was our contribution to the £38million raised by Sport Relief so far.
Y2 Visit to St Paul’s Cathedral Year 2 had an amazing trip to St Paul's Cathedral. They were amazed by the beautiful Cathedral and impressed the staff there with all their knowledge about St Paul's Cathedral and the Great Fire of London.
Y6 Trip to see Wicked
On Wednesday 7th
February year 6 children enjoyed their trip to
the Apollo Theatre, London, to see the spectacular musical
‘Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West ‘.
The children were mesmerised by the stage scenery, the music
and the acting. The day was certainly a great success and it has
provided us with excellent material for our creative writing. I
would like to thank the staff and parents who volunteered to
accompany us on the day to make it so successful
“The show was absolutely extravagant and the backdrop was
amazing.” Gurkaran- Amethyst

Harrow Choir Showcase
On Monday 12th March, over fifty members of the Lower School Choir performed in the Harrow Choir Showcase. Singing 'How Far I'll
Go' and 'Fix You'. They wowed the audience and shone throughout. The groups of soloists also did themselves proud and you
wouldn't have realised that they were the youngest choir on the stage! We are already looking forward to our next performance at
Songfest in June. Thank you to Mr Revens and Miss Rolnick for rehearsing the music with the children.
Harrow Dance Showcase
35 children took part in The Harrow Dance Showcase on the Tuesday 20th March in the newly refurbished theatre at Hatch End High
School. Children from Year 3 and 4 performed a contemporary urban dance to ‘Ego’ whilst year 6 performed a circus themed
extravaganza to ‘The Greatest Show’. All of the children performed with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment. Thank you to Mrs
Taylor, Miss Robinson and Miss Kerl for preparing the children for this event.
HMS String Festival
On Tuesday 27th
March eleven of our children were involved in The String Fest at The Harrow Arts Centre. The audience were
entertained by an eclectic mix of pieces; the highlights were definitely The Lord of the Rings theme tune and Three Lions (Football’s
Coming Home). Well done to the following children who were involved: Aniya Agarwal, Chloe Black, Monica Clemens, Charles
Cadman, Diya Rajan, Pranati Akella, Ellay Vaughan, Jenani Muralitharan, Jessica Akinboro, Ali Abou el Hassan and Victoria De
Magtige. Thank you to Mr Waterfield for all his hard work with our string players.
Watford Festival Golf Medal
Congratulations to Arwin Vermeulen, from Silver Class, for being awarded a gold medal and a trophy in the recent Watford Festival
for his impressive piano recital.
If your child has any musical or performance related achievements from life outside of school that you would like celebrated in the
West Lodge newsletter, please contact Mrs Dines in the school office.
Harrow Young Musicians
If your child has enjoyed and taken part in any of the festivals held by the Harrow Music Service at the Harrow Arts Centre this year,
then why not encourage them to join a regular group? Harrow Young Musicians (HYM) hold regular sessions, on Saturdays, at Hatch
End High School, Headstone Lane, Harrow, Middlesex. HA3 6NR. There is a free taster session on Saturday 21st
April 10-11:30. Just
turn up with an instrument and music stand – no audition necessary. Taking up this opportunity will really help your child progress
with their instrument as well as helping them with their sight reading skills. For more information contact the HYM Administrator on
02084201519 or look at their website www.hym.org.uk.

Squad: Lola, Chloe, Jamie, Keigan, Amelia Humphris, Charlotte, Madeleine. 20
th February Year 6 Netball Rally, Bentley Wood High School
A terrific group stage saw West lodge unbeaten thanks to four wins and a draw and into the 1st
to 3rd
place play-offs for the first time in recent memory. The first match in the play-offs was against Pinner Park - the team which beat us in our first league match. This was much closer than the league match but just as exciting! Despite going a goal down in the early stages, we recovered to lead 2-1 thanks to goals from Lola and Keigan. However, Pinner Park continued to miss a host of chances but eventually recovered to score two more goals and take the game 3-2. Our final match was a tired 4-1 loss to a strong Welldon Park outfit. This was still a great team performance! Goal scorers: Keigan 3, Lola 3, Jamie 2, Madeleine 2, Charlotte. Squad: Lola, Chloe, Jamie, Keigan, Amelia Humphris, Charlotte, Madeleine. 22
nd February Year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics North London Finals, Harrow Leisure Centre

West Lodge worked hard together as a team and did well to reach the quarter finals, being knocked out by the eventual winners of the tournament. The first game was a 2-1 win against Norbury thanks to goals from Mayowa and Jamie. Josh scored the only goal in the win against Vaughan. We defeated St George’s in the final group games as Dylan and an own goal sealed a 2-0 win to set up a quarter-final match against St Joseph’s. The opposition’s strength proved too much as they secured a 4-0 win. An excellent performance from West Lodge and a great experience! Squad: Adhrit, Keigan, Jamie, Mayowa, Josh, Aarav, Nojan, Dylan, James. 27
th February Year 3, 4, 5, 6, Swimming Gala, Harrow Leisure Centre

March Year 5 & 6 Boys South East England Regional Football Finals, Thamesmead Having won the Middlesex round of this competition, West Lodge set off early to reach Thamesmead to play in the South East England Regional Finals. The team were representing the borough, the county and Inner London Schools' Football Association and placed in a group with Pirton Hill (representing Bedfordshire SFA), Sidegate (representing Suffolk SFA) and Oaklynge (representing Sussex SFA). We started strongly against Ocklynge with Brian and Julian keeping it tight at the back, while Mayowa, Matthew and Max controlled the midfield. Freddie went close as he brilliantly skipped past the goalkeeper only to be denied by some excellent recovering defending. Matthew also went close as he thundered a left footed strike against the cross bar following a short corner. Ocklynge mounted their first real purposeful attack early in the second half and a good shot rebounded to their striker to tuck in from close range. Ocklynge protected the lead well and the game ended 1-0. In the second game against Pirton Hill, we started with Dylan up front who battled well against two quick defenders. We had more of the ball but couldn't carve out a chance. In the second half Keigan used the ball well and just as the game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, Freddie fired a low shot across goal into the bottom corner. Eager to earn our first win and clean sheet, Jamie added extra protection to the defence and we saw the game out quite comfortably. The final game was against Sidegate and lifted from the previous game we started on the front foot. We looked to get in behind the defence at every opportunity. This panicked Sidegate and led to a reckless foul on the edge of the box. Matthew stepped up and curled a sumptuous shot into the left corner. We maintained this intensity and Charlie's long accurate pass set Freddie away and he produced a deft touch to lob the onrushing keeper. The game finished 2-0. Unfortunately, we missed out on the final by 1 point but nevertheless it was a great experience and there were so many positives from this tournament. The squad should be proud of their great achievements this year and pleased to have represented the borough in style! Squad: Charlie, Mayowa, Keigan, Jamie, Max, Brian, Matthew, Freddie, Julian, Dylan. 15
th March Year 5 & 6 Girls’ Football London Youth Games Qualifier, The Hive
An inexperienced year 5 squad played with great spirit and teamwork against teams largely made up of year 6 girls. They performed well and improved in each game through the group stages. The first match against a strong St.Bernadette’s team was a 2-0 defeat. The next game was a much closer affair as we lost 1-0 despite Jessica unlucky not to score with a good chance. The final group game was a goalless draw with St Joseph’s. In an even game, Ellie and Lois had some good chances to score. Well done to the whole squad! Squad: Hana, Amelie Coyle, Ellie, Mia, Amelie Hogberg, Lois, Janet, Jessica.

nd March Year 4, 5, & 6 Sportshall Athletics London Finals, Crystal Palace
West Lodge represented Harrow at the London Sportshall athletics finals. This was a terrific achievement as it was the first time Harrow had reached this stage in the past 10 years! An early start meant the squad were very excited when they eventually reached Crystal Palace. With 12 schools from all over London, the competition was run slickly with running races taking place alongside field events. The boys - in particular - performed very well against some fantastic teams with the girls holding their own but finding the competition tough in some events. There is a lot to look forward to next year as half of the girls’ squad was made up of year 4s and 5s! West Lodge finished a very credible 10
th (our secret target) in London. When you consider each of the 32 boroughs of London had at least
6 schools at its borough championships, close to 200 schools have been involved at some point! The eventual winners Whiteheath and second place school Little Ealing both qualified from the North London Finals highlighting how strong the previous round was and how well West Lodge did to even reach this stage! Year 6: Ronnie, Aayush, Matthew , Kaelen, Sravan, Issa, Charlie, Arjun, Lola, Fearne, Freddie, Ahmad, Evie, Chloe, Max, Amelia, Brian, Madeleine, Mayowa, Charlotte Year 5: Lowena, Lucy, Amelie, Julian, Amelie, Florence, Rian, Audrey, Nisha. 26
th March Harrow Boys’ League Final
On Monday 26th March, the Boys' Football Team took part in the League Play Off Finals at The Hive. The competition was made up ofthe most successful teams from the group phase played throughout the year. The first match was against Cannon Lane and despite creating many chances, we were unable to force a way through. The second game saw us take on St Joseph's and we also dominated this game, thankfully converting three of our chances to win 3-0. The first game proved costly as we missed out on top spot due to goal difference. We went into the runner ups’ group and came up against another wall of defenders in our first game in this group, so drew 0-0. We won our final game 1-0. We were unlucky not to secure another title, but can be very satisfied with our brilliant double this year. Harrow Cup Champions and Middlesex Cup Champions makes us all very proud. Then competing and going so close in the South East England Finals was another important experience for us all. We have enjoyed our football this year and tried to make the most out of all these meaningful opportunities that came our way. Squad - Charlie, Finn, Mayowa, Keigan, Jamie, Julian, Max, Freddie, Matthew, Brian, Nojan, Dylan, Aayush, Aarav. 27
th March Harrow Girls’ League Final
On 27th March, the Girls' Football Team had their last outing of the year. It was the League Finals and saw the 5 best teams in the borough compete to be crowned league champions. In the first game V St Bernadettes, we showed great intent and scored 3 goals to win 3-0. Next, we played Belmont and secured a comfortable 2-0 victory. Then, we had to dig in to secure an important 0-0 V St Teresa. We knew what we had to do in our last game and we did it perfectly. Remained solid in defence and took our chance to win 1-0 and earn the title. The team were fabulous and showed great spirit. 6 goals scored in total and none let in. Isabelle was decisive, making important saves at important times. Fearne tackled, blocked, intercepted and cleared danger really well. Amelie C was safe in defence and set up chances with clever passes. Amelia and Charlotte never stopped running and helped so much in attack and defence. Sophie showed real intelligence and marshalled midfield expertly. Madeleine and Amelie H were always there when the team needed and provided extra energy. Lola made smart runs and showed composure in front of goal to score 6 goals and be the tournament top scorer. It was the ideal way to round of an incredible season. Harrow Cup Champions and now Harrow League Champions - a super double that everyone is so proud of. Well done Girls! Squad: Isabelle, Fearne, Amelie C, Madeleine, Amelie H, Amelia, Charlotte, Lola, Sophie, Chloe. Have a great Easter! Mr Nevins, Mrs Dunn, Mr Beckwith, Mr O’Rourke, Mr Bennett, Miss Zhang, Mrs Gobindlal, Mr Dees, Mr Long.
