    Christs PerectResponse to

    Gods Word

EACH OF US LONGS O BE AFFIRMED AND ACCEPED. Tats why we wear what wewear and talk the way we talk and hang out with the people we hang out with. We think that iwe just look like, talk to, and spend time with whomever the accepted ones are, we too might be

accepted. But this longing or acceptance by others is a distortion o the desire God has placed in usto be accepted by Him. Because o sin, instead o seeking Gods acceptance, we seek it rom others.

Even when we want God to accept us, we tend to go about it in all the wrong ways, thinking thati we just perorm enough tricks or God, He will oer His approval. ricks or no tricks, sin rendersus unacceptable to Him. So is there any hope?

Te good news is that there is hope or the unacceptable, and His name is Jesus. God the Fatherafrmed Jesus as uniquely qualied to ulll the righteousness we need but dont have. By Gods grace, through aith in Christ, we are accepted by God and afrmed as His children.

What lengths have you gone to in order to be accepted? What does it meanto you that because o Christs obedience, His perect response, you can be

    accepted by God?

    JESUS: THEFAITHFUL SON

RELIGIONS HAVE EXISTED across all time and locations.

Nearly every people group has some set o belies that

guides their thinking about the aterlie. The belies

are as varied as the people that believe them. The

one commonaliy between them all is the act that we

humans must do something to appease the wrath o the gods.

There is always a list o things we are to do, and in many cases

a list o things not to do. In the end, you add it all up and hopethe good you have done outweighs the bad. That in a nutshell is

religion. But the gospel is something completely diferent.

This week, we will see that God provides a way or acceptance

through Jesus Christ. How? Through Jesus living up to the

righteous standard God requires o humanity. By obeying Gods

Word, Jesus reversed the curse that sin has brought upon Gods

people and His creation. Unlike Adam in the garden and Israel in

the wilderness, Jesus proved Himsel to be the aithul Son who

    obeys Gods Word.

Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As He waspraying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a physical appearance

like a dove. And a voice came rom heaven: You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You!

IMAGINE THE SCENE THAT DAY Jesus is making his way to the Jordan River where Johnthe Baptist has been baptizing people John spots Jesus approaching and declares,Here is the Lamb o God, who takes away the sin o the world! (John 1:29) The people

must have been amazed at such a declarationHowever, their amazement is only heightened as Jesus enters the Jordans waters

and is baptized and God Himsel declares, You are My beloved Son I take delight inYou! (Luke 3:22) This scene is amazing! There are many incredible things happening

in this text We see the Triune God on ull display: the Son is being baptized, the Fatherdeclares His pleasure, and the Spirit descends to rest upon the Son We also see theinauguration o Jesus earthly ministry with this event But perhaps the greatest thing

we see in this text is God the Fathers verbal afrmation o Jesus qualications to ulllthe righteous requirements that expected o us This is great news or us

Jesus was the unique Son o God He was ully God and ully man As ully God, healone was able to come and be the sinless Savior or man As ully man, he alone was

able to pay the debt that humanity owed to God When the time had come or Jesus tobegin his earthly ministry, and make his rst step toward the cross in Jerusalem, God the

Father declares His approval o His Sons worthiness or the task Because o this werejoice! For as God is satised with His Son, He is also satised with all who are ound

    with aith in His Son

    READY YOUR HEART

Luke 4:1-13 Then Jesus returned rom the Jordan, ull o the Holy Spirit, and was led bythe Spirit in the wilderness or 40 days to be tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing during

those days, and when they were over, He was hungry. The Devil said to Him, I You are

the Son o God, tell this stone to become bread. But Jesus answered him, It is written:

Man must not live on bread alone. So he took Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms

o the world in a moment o time. The Devil said to Him, I will give You their splendor and

all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.

I You, then, will worship me, all will be Yours. And Jesus answered him, It is written:

Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only. So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him

stand on the pinnacle o the temple, and said to Him, I You are the Son o God, throw

Yoursel down rom here. For it is written: He will give His angels orders concerning you, to

protect you, and they will support you with their hands,so that you will not strike your ootagainst a stone. And Jesus answered him, It is said: Do not test the Lord your God. Ater

the Devil had fnished every temptation, he departed rom Him or a time.

HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN SOMEONE who does everything well? There always seem tobe one or two o them around us These are the people who could dribble better, tackle

harder, and run aster They always made great grades, remembered everything, andstudied less than everyone else You know these types They just seem to be one notch

ahead o everyone else Usually these people are not the objects o our aectionsIt isnt that they are good at things, it is usually their attitude about it that we dislikeI only their success in lie was reected in their attitude In many ways, Jesus is just

like these people He is ar superior in all his ways Successul where we have ailed

Victorious where we have lost However, with Jesus, rather than responding with envyand jealously, we can respond with worship and adoration His victories secure ourvictory His successes become our successes, and erase our ailures

It is amazing to think about the sinlessness o Jesus Because we are painully awareo our sinulness and imperections, it gives us some insight into the magnicence oJesus perection Take a moment to take in this idea: in every way that we are tempted,

Jesus was tempted, yet he never sinned (Heb 4:15) He never once ailed to obey His

Father at every point o the Law What an amazing Savior we have!

PAUSE AND REFLECT What does it mean to you that Christs success andvictories can be shared by you?

I He was able to resist Satans traps and temptations, andHe is empowering you, do you have to give in to sin?

What is one area o your lie you are desperate or a victorytoday? Spend some time in prayer asking or Gods help.

Luke 4:40-41 When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with variousdiseases brought them to Him. As He laid His hands on each one o them, He would heal

them. Also, demons were coming out o many, shouting and saying, You are the Son o

God! But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He

    was the Messiah.

HOW DO WE KNOW i Jesus is the one who can save us? Is there a way to judge i Jesus

was the expected Savior? To prove He was who He said He was?Jesus anticipated and answered questions like these On one occasion, Jesus went

to his hometown o Nazareth on the Sabbath Day and went to the synagogue to preachUpon arrival He is given a scroll o the prophet Isaiah He opens it to Isaiah 61 and reads

the rst two verses and then declares to them, Today as you listen, this Scripture hasbeen ullled (Luke 4:21)

What did he mean by this? He meant that He was the one doing the things that

passage predicted the Messiah would do He was the anointed proclaimer o GoodNews He was the healer o the sick, blind, and lame Jesus came to ulll the Word o

God He came to do all that Gods Holy Word commanded, and in doing so, He provedHe was the One all history had been pointing to and waiting or

What is the aim and intent o Jesus ullling o the Word o God? To bring orthrestoration to the allen race o Adam and to make all things new (Rev 21:5) Jesus

came to bring orth the Kingdom o God In the bringing orth o the kingdom, He isinaugurating a new reality

When sin entered the Garden, creation became broken He is reversing the eectso the all, both in the descendants o Adam and the creation His obedience to thosewritten prophecies show that he alone has the authority to bring orth this new reality,

and He expects us and enables us to take part in this new reality

    PROPHECIES FULFILLED

Succeed Where We FailedWhen Adam sinned against God, we sinned with him, which madguilty and unacceptable beore a holy God (Rom. 5:12,18-19).

In our individualist society, it is difcult or people tounderstand how one persons sin can aect other people. Wis it important that we maintain the biblical teaching that

Adams sin is passed down to us? What evidence o this do we see in our own lives?

Jesus aced the Devas Adam did, and Jesus oughttemptation in the wilderness, just Israel. But unlike Adam and Israel,Jesus succeeded in the mission.

    What Old Testament book

did Jesus quote rom? What is the context o the

verses Jesus quoted, andwhat do you think His quotindicated or people inHis day?

What does that teach usabout fghting sin andtemptation?

Even today,Satan is stillup to his old tricks o distortingGods Word and deceiving us intothinking it says something otherthan what God has spoken.

    Can you think o other

examples when Gods Wordhas been misused tojustiy sin?

Have you ever been conusedabout Gods Word and whatGod desires o us?

How did the Holy Spiritcorrect your alse thinking?

Restore Creation.Sin has tarnished Gods good creation, leaving itsawul eects all around us, including in our own bodiesthat waste away due to age and disease.

To what do unbelieving people attribute all theevil, chaos, and disorder in our world? What doesthe Bible say is the source o the evil in our world?

What do unbelievers think will put an end to thechaos and evil around us? What does the Bible saywill put an end to the chaos and evil around us?

ConclusionThough in and o ourselves we are unacceptable to God, in Christwe are not only acceptable to God but He afrms us, calling us Hissons and daughters and sending us out to accomplish His mission

Do you believe that you are accepted by God through Christand that God has afrmed you as His child because o Christ?

Are you being obedient as Gods child in ulllingGods mission?

What are some ways you can join Gods mission to proclaimreedom to those who are under sins curse?

    ENCORE

    1. BE OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (LUKE 3:21-22).

God has spoken to us in His Word and through creation. We have rejected His Word and chosen togo our own way. We need God to x what we broke in order that we might be reconciled to Him.

Te Bible gives us good news. We do not have to ear being rejected by God because God Himselhas provided a way by which sinners may be accepted beore Him. Luke, the evangelist, records thebaptism o Jesus o Nazareth in order to show us that Jesus was uniquely qualied to provide the

way or sinners to be accepted beore God.First, Jesus was uniquely qualied to bring us to God because He was the Lords anointed, the

Messiah-Christ. God had previously promised He would send a Servant who would carry our

sorrows and bear our sins (Isa. 53:4-6). Te Coming One would be anointed by the Holy Spirit toaccomplish Gods mission to seek and save the lost. Luke identies Jesus as the promised anointedone (Christ) who came to liberate Gods people rom sins slavery (Luke 4:16-21; see Isa. 61:1-2).

Second, Jesus was uniquely qualied to bring us to God because He was and is Gods aithulSon, and the Father is pleased with His obedience (Luke 3:22). Jesus is the aithul and obedientSon who was empowered by the Holy Spirit to save Gods people by ullling the righteousness Godrequired in order to bring them to God. Tough Jesus had never sinned, He identied with Hissinul people by being baptized.

Here we see the distinction between religion and the gospel. Religion is about what you must doin order to be accepted beore God; Christianity is about what God has done or you in order to

accept you. Tis is the good news o the gospelthrough aith in Christ, the Lords anointed, wecan be accepted beore a holy God.

    2. SUCCEED WHERE WE FAILED (LUKE 4:1-13).

Te Gospels shine a spotlight on Jesus, the Messiah o Israel. He was the true representative andsubstitute or sinul humanity. Jesus aced the Devil as Adam did, and Jesus ought temptationin the wilderness, just like Israel. But unlike Adam and Israel, Jesus succeeded in the mission. Heobeyed God at every point they ailed. Jesus is the aithul Adam and the aithul Israel who obeyedGods Word.

Jesus responded to Satans temptations by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:13,16. In these passages,

Israel was preparing to cross the Jordan River and enter the promised land. By quoting romDeuteronomy, Jesus identied Himsel with Israel. In other words, whereas Israel ailed to obeyGods Word as they prepared to cross the Jordan River, Jesus kept Gods Word ater crossingthrough the waters o baptism and ghting temptationby trusting (and quoting!) the very wordGod had given to Israel.

Jesus is a aithul representative and substitute because He ullled all righteousness. He wasobedient to Gods Word at the exact point where Adam and Israel ailed. Tat means Jesus is ouraithul representative and substitute too. He has ullled all righteousness by being obedient to theFather where you and I have ailed.

    JESUS: THE FAITHFUL SON

    Jesus is uniquely able to...

    6FALL 2012

Tis is the good news o the gospel. Te Father accepts Jesus obedience on behal o those whoput their trust in Christ. We are unacceptable beore a holy God, but Jesus is acceptable, and Godafrms Jesus because He pleased the Father (Luke 3:22). By aith in Jesus Christ, we are acceptableto God and receive the same afrmation. Te words the Father uttered over Jesus at His baptism

(You are My beloved Son. I take delight in You!) are true o us as well.

    3. RESTORE CREATION (LUKE 4:40-41; CF. 4:16-21,31-39).

Because o sin, Gods good creation has been inltrated by all kinds o evil: disease, death, chaos, and poverty. Sin has tarnished Gods good creation, leaving its awul eects all around us, includingin our own bodies that waste away due to age and disease.

As Gods Messiah, Jesus not only ullled all righteousness by identiying with humanity andobeying where weve ailed, but He also announced the good news o Gods kingdom (Luke 4:42-44). Jesus arrival marked the beginning o the kingdom o God, the rule o God where the eects osin on creation were to be halted and reversed and Gods people were to be liberated rom sins hold

on them.Since Jesus was the Messiah, anointed by Gods Spirit to accomplish Gods mission, Jesus had

authority over all creation (5:1-10; 8:22-25). Jesus displayed this authority when He liberated peoplerom physical bondage by healing their diseases (4:38-40) and rom spiritual bondage by casting outtheir demons (vv. 41-44).

As we await the return o Christ, the Father is placing every enemy under Jesus eet (Eph. 1:22).Ater Jesus has deeated all His enemies, including death, He will deliver the kingdom to the Father, and we will enter into Gods nal rest, where we will nally be ree rom sin and disease and death

    (1 Cor. 15:24-28).

CONCLUSIONJesus ullled the righteousness God requires o humanity by identiying with Gods previous sinulhuman representatives (Adam and Israel) and reenacting their lives at the very points they ailed.Christs obedience began to reverse the eects o sin unleashed upon Gods people and the created

world. Jesus was uniquely qualied to ulll Gods mission because He was the Lords anointed, theMessiah-Christ.

As those who are accepted by God through Christ, we too have been empowered by the HolySpirit or mission and ministry. Te Bible declares that we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, aholy nation, a people or His possession (1 Pet. 2:9). In other words, though in and o ourselves weare unacceptable to God, in Christ we are not only acceptable to God but God afrms us, calling us

His sons and daughters and sending us out to accomplish His missionto proclaim the praises othe One who called you out o darkness into His marvelous light.

Now Jesus is working through us, in the power o the Holy Spirit, to continue telling the worldthat He alone is God and the only pathway to the Father. As we proclaim this good news o Godskingdom, we will see people liberated rom bondage to sin.
