New Mexico-Texas Tech Series InformationSERIES HISTORyNew Mexico and Texas Tech will meet for the 45th time since the series began in 1931. The series is lopsided in favor of the Red Raiders who boast a record of 36-6-2 against the Lobos. Texas Tech has won the last three games, dating back to 2009. The combined scores of those three meetings is 159-58. The last win New Mexico had against the Big 12 school was in 2004 when they welcomed Tech to University Stadium and won 27-24. When the Red Raiders came to Albuquerque last year, they racked up 624 yards of total offense in their 59-13 win; that total was 50 yards short of being double the yards UNM had against them (337). The Lobos scored a touchdown in the second quarter, but were held to field goals the remainder of the game. Kicker James Aho connected from 44 and 47 yards out in the fourth quarter to bring the Lobos’ score to double digits. Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville, who has been at the helm of the Red Raiders program since 2010, is 2-0 against New Mexico. TEXAS TECH QUICK FACTS:• The Red Raiders enter Saturday’s game undefeated at 2-0 after a Week Two 58-10 road victory over the Texas State Bobcats. Texas Tech has scored 102 points combined during the first two games of the season, and held its opponents, Northwestern State and Texas State, to 16 points combined. • Senior quarterback Seth Doege, who led the NCAA in passing completions per game last season, threw for 319 yards and a career -high five touchdowns against Texas State. The native of Wolfforth, Texas, was 25 of 32 in fewer than three quarters of play. • The Red Raiders also racked up 186 yards on the ground, averag-ing 8.1 yards a carry. Kenny Williams and Eric Stephens led the way for Tech with 62 rushing yards each. Williams carried the ball five times, Stephens six. • Texas Tech is not ranked but is receiving votes in the USA Today Poll.• The Red Raiders and Lobos have two opponents in common this season. The Lobos just played against the Texas Longhorns, los-ing 45-0, and Texas Tech will host them in Lubbock on Nov. 3. New Mexico will host Texas State for homecoming on Oct. 6, a foe Texas Tech defeated last weekend. UNM-TEXAS TECH CONNECTIONS• Lobo freshmen defensive backs Vershad and Rashad Jackson were teammates with Texas Tech sophomore running back DeAndre Washington at Thurgood Marshall HS in Missouri City, Texas. They played for coach James Williams • Former Lobo quarterback and Raton standout Dustin Walton is on the Red Raiders roster. He is the only player from New Mexico for Texas Tech. • UNM’s Bob Davie and Texas Tech’s Tommy Tuberville both coached at Texas A&M, although at different times. Davie was at A&M from 1985-1993 where he was linebackers coach before taking over as defensive coordinator. When Davie departed for Notre Dame in 1994, Tuberville was hired to replace him as the defensive coordinator.

LAST MEETING, 2011 ALBuQuERQuE, N.M. (AP) - Deon Long had three receptions for 139 yards in New Mexico’s 59-13 loss to Texas Tech on Saturday. Seth Doege threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns to lead Texas Tech. Doege tied a school record by completing his first 15 passes en route to finishing 40 for 44 - a 90.9 completion percentage, a national record for quarterbacks with at least 40 completions. Darrin Moore caught nine passes for 118 yards and three touch-downs for the Red Raiders (2-0). Eric Ward had two TD receptions. Texas Tech amassed 624 yards of offense. Two lightning delays postponed the game a total of 95 minutes.

2012 Lobo FootbaLL Media ReLeaseDawn of the davie eraCoach Bob Davie was introduced as the 31st football coach at the University of New Mexico on Nov. 17, 2011.The former Notre Dame head coach and ABC/ESPN television analyst has piqued the curiosity of media nationwide with his return to the sidelines on a program that struggled in recent years but has tremendous potential for growth.“I can honestly tell you I am more excited and more comfortable than I have ever, ever been,” Davie said of the opportunity to coach the Lobos during his introductory press conference. “I think this can be a great job. I look at the state of New Mexico; I love this state. We have something unique here ... and that fires me up.”

old school debutUNM’s 66-21 victory over Southern in the 2012 season opener was an impressive de-but for Davie, but it ranks only fourth on the list of biggest margins of victory by a Lobo coach in his first game. Dudley DeGroot guided UNM to a 78-0 win over Northern Arizona during his first game in 1950. Bill Weeks’ debut in 1960 resulted in a 77-6 win over the University of Mexico. Gwinn Henry’s opening act in 1934 produced a 76-7 win over New Mexico Highlands.

Tough on Texas TechCoaching staffs on which Bob Davie has been a part have a 7-3-1 record all-time against Texas Tech. Notre Dame never has played Texas Tech, but Texas A&M was 7-2 against the Red Raiders when Davie coached there for nine seasons. Davie served as a graduate assistant coach at Arizona and was 0-1-1 against Texas Tech.

The designated player will lead the team onto the field with the New Mexico state flag before home games as well as before the game at New Mexico State. That player also will participate on UNM’s special teams units during that particular game. Coach Davie and his staff will select the weekly player, based on who exhibits the dedication, work ethic, team spirit and un-selfishness that exemplifies Lobo football and the state of New Mexico. “Walk-ons are critical to our success here at UNM,” Davie said. “I have tremendous respect for all of them and want to have a way to recognize their importance and con-tributions to the program.” The Lobo ,football team will recognize that player’s hometown before each home game. Jeric Magnant, a sopho-more walk-on from Rio Rancho, N.M. (Rio Rancho High School) served as the New Mexico Man for the Sept. 1 season opener vs. Southern. He also has earned a scholarship this fall, based on the criteria for the award that he dis-played – on and off the field during the off-season. “We are fortunate to have Jeric Magnant in our program at UNM,” Davie said. “He exemplifies all the characteristics we are looking for in a New Mexico Man. “He has earned his scholarship and will serve as a role model for all future walk-ons.” UNM’s next New Mexico Man will be se-lected Sept. 22 at New Mexico State.

turnover is only good if it’s fruit-filledThe University of New Mexico has nine fifth-year seniors whose careers started under then-coach Rocky Long in 2008. Those players are: tight end Chris Biren, linebacker Joseph Harris, quar-terback B.R, Holbrook, linebacker Mark Hunter, wide receiver Ty Kirk, tight end Lucas Reed, wide receiver Quintell Solomon, linebacker Joe Stoner and free safety Freddy Young. Those players have been through three head coaching changes, four offensive coordinator changes and five defensive coordina-tor changes.

The ‘Watchers’Junior Dillon Farrell and senior Lucas Reed are on two national preseason watch lists. Farrell (Baton Rouge, La.) is on the watch list for the Rimington Award, which goes annually to the nation’s best center. Farrell is the only player in the group who didn’t play center in 2011; he started at right tackle for most of the season after playing center in 2010. Farrell moved back to center in the spring for offensive line coach Jason Lenzmeier.Reed is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which is presented to the nation’s best tight end. Reed (Tucson, Ariz.) had a “quiet” 2011 season, compared to his 2010 standards. Reed had 22 receptions for 241 yards — down from his 33 receptions, 459 yards and five touchdowns in ’10 — as defenses paid more attention to him. Reed’s 55 receptions over the past two seasons are the most by a Lobo tight end in 24 years.

Bye, Bye WeekThat’s right — 13 games, no bye week in 2012 for UNM. It’s a tall order for a team just beginning to rebuild program numbers, a foundation and tradition. The last time the Lobos went through a season without a bye week was 2008. That team started off 4-4, including a 70-7 victory over San Diego State. Injuries crippled that New Mexico team down the stretch, and it lost the last four games of the season. The Lobos have won just four of 42 games since that 4-4 start in 2008.

season-ticket updateThe Lobo football team has eclipsed last year’s total of 10,134 season tickets sold. UNM has sold 11,190 season tickets as of

Monday. UNM is offering prorated season tickets leading up to the Boise State game.

Personnel pictureCoach Davie is taking over a program that is recovering from a three-year NCAA probation and has suffered from instability in retention. Of the 60 players arrived on scholarship at UNM between 2009-11 (not including eight other players who originally accepted scholarships but never arrived), only 35 remain. The 2012 edition of the Lobos includes 75 scholarship players. The breakdown includes 23 seniors, 15 juniors, 14 sophomores, three redshirt freshmen and 20 true freshmen.UNM has 43 returning lettermen, including 13 position starters (eight on offense, five on defense). UNM returns 19 offensive lettermen, 21 defensive lettermen and three specialists.

Welcome Back, LobosSenior nose tackle Rod Davis is eligible to play Saturday after missing the first two games because of a minor NCAA violation.Sophomore cornerback Devonta Tabannah also will return to the team this week after serving a two-game suspension for a violation of team rules.

Game 2 notes vs. TExAs (9/8/12)

Team -UNM team captains for Saturday’s game against were WR Lamaar Thomas, LB Joe Stoner and LB Mark Hunter-A crowd of 100,990 watched Saturday’s game, the most ever to watch a Lobo team play. The previous record was 93,875 at Tennessee on Sept. 6, 1986. The crowd for the last UNM game at Texas on Sept. 17, 1988 drew 55,630.-The Lobos have not scored in three meetings against Texas, losing by scores of 47-0 (1948), 47-0 (1988) and 45-0 (2012).

offense -The Lobos rushed for 68 yards in the first quarter. In the 1988 game against Texas, UNM had minus-56 yards rushing for the game.-QB B.R. Holbrook left the game after receiving a blow to the head and ribs with 12:09 left in the first half and did not return. X-rays on his ribs were negative.-WR Lamaar Thomas received a blow to the head on the opening kickoff in the second half and did not return.-RB Kasey Carrier played his first game since the 2010 season finale on Nov. 27 against TCU. Carrier had 11 carries for 51 yards and tied for the team high with two receptions for 6 yards.

Defense-Senior SS Matt Raymer recorded his first career sack and forced fumble when he stripped Texas QB David Ash of the football with 56 seconds left in the first half. The ball went out of bounds for an 11-yard loss. He finished with a career-high eight tackles.

special teams-UNM punter Ben Skaer had a punt blocked in the last minute of the first quarter. It was the first punt the Lobos had blocked since Oct. 22, 2011 at TCU.-Skaer had a 51-yard punt in the third quarter, his first of 50 yards or more this season and the 23rd of his career.-True freshman Carlos Wiggins made his first career kickoff return, for 8 yards in the third quarter. He had two returns on the night for an average of 9.5 yards per return.

A record QuarterUNM set a school record with 38 points in the second quarter of the season opener vs. Southern. The Lobos scored two rushing touchdowns, one passing TD, one defensive TD (a fumble return), one special teams TD (a 98-yard kickoff return) and a field goal. The old record was 33 points, which the Lobo teams in 1948 (vs. New Mexico State) and 1950 (vs. Northern Arizona) amassed.

Fresh Productive facesNineteen first-year Lobos embarked on their first road trip at Texas, which just also happened to be the largest crowd ever to watch a UNM team.New Mexico had 12 true freshmen earn playing time on the trip.Twenty-seven Lobos saw the first action of their collegiate careers in the season opener against Southern. Freshmen scored five touchdowns in the win. True freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche scored on TD runs of 7 and 47 yards. Redshirt freshman Jhurell Pressley scored on a 5-yard run. True freshman cornerback Cranston Jones had a 39-yard interception return for a TD and true freshman wide receiver Carlos Wiggins found the end zone on a 7-yard run.

Lobos don’t beat the LobosCoach Bob Davie has preached from day one that his program cannot make self-inflicted mistakes if it wants to be successful in 2012.The stats from the Southern game show that the team heeded his words. UNM had just one penalty for five yards. It was the first time in nine games that the Lobos had just one penalty (vs. New Mexico State last year). The Lobos had zero turnovers, marking the second consecutive game without a turn-over (Boise State last year). The game against Texas brought a bigger challenge, and UNM committed eight penal-ties, two turnovers and a blocked punt.

Road woesThe Lobos have a 23-game road losing streak heading into Saturday’s game at Texas Tech, the nation’s longest. UNM has not won a road game since defeating New Mexico State 35-24 on Sept. 27, 2008. New Mexico hasn’t defeated an opponent outside New Mexico since a 20-17 triumph at San Diego State on Oct. 20, 2007.

it takes a village to campThe Lobos again made the 180-mile trek south to the mountain village of Ruidoso (population 8,010) for two weeks of practice in August. It was the first trip for Coach Davie and his staff, but the program’s third trip overall was significant because of the wildfires that damaged areas around the village in June. The football program joined forces with the Albuquerque Isotopes Triple-A baseball team, Cumulus Media in Albuquerque and The Red Cross of New Mexico for a two-day “New Mexico Fire Relief” drive on July 6-7. The event produced more than $5,000 in donations toward those affected by New Mexico wildfires.

hello, ‘Branch Field at University stadium’University Stadium underwent a surface change from natural grass to FieldTurf this season. The replacement process was completed just more than a week before the 2012 season opener against Southern University. On July 31, UNM announced that the field will be named “Branch Field,” after Univer-sity of New Mexico alumni Margaret and Turner Branch donated $1.5 million to Lobo Athletics. The naming rights for “Branch Field” are effective for the next 15 years.

2012 Lobo FootbaLL Media ReLeaseon The ProwlIn 2012, the Lobo football team will begin a ritual of walking through the “Howl Zone” — the northern section of the Stadium West parking lot — on a designated path to its locker room at the Tow Diehm Complex on the south end of University Stadium.Lobo fans will get to cheer on their team and show their school spirit and support to start the team’s pregame routine.

back to full strengthDue to NCAA limitations, the Lobos have not been able to recruit a full class for the last three years, making them 14 scholarship players shy this season. UNM could sign only 20 in 2009 and 2010, and just 21 in 2011. That was the final year of the NCAA sanctions and UNM returned to the normal allotment of 25 in Febru-ary of 2012.UNM still is 11 scholarships under its 85 limit, and the team will need a couple of years to climb back up to the maximum allowed because the 2012 Lobos will graduate 23 seniors.

53rd season at University stadium, before ‘Branch Field’The 2012 season is the 53rd for the Lobos at University Stadium, but the first on Branch Field. The first game at University Stadium took place on Sept. 17, 1960, when New Mexico ripped the University of Mexico, 77-6. UNM is 147-146-3 all-time at University Stadium.

Mountain West history for the LobosThe Lobos are 43-55 all-time in the MW, but have suffered through a 3-20 record the past three seasons.

UNM historyThe University of New Mexico is competing in its 114th season of football in 2012. The Lobos have an all-time record of 453-545-31. The school was founded in 1889. Three years later, the first football game was played on Oct. 7, 1892, when a team representing UNM played a squad from Albuquerque High School in a vacant lot north of the town’s ice factory. The preps prevailed 5-0. The territory of New Mexico was not granted statehood until 1912.The biggest win in school history was a 108-0 win over Northern Arizona in Albuquerque in 1916. The school’s worst defeat was 110-3 to New Mexico State in 1917.UNM’s biggest win since the installation of platoon football in 1965 is a 72-8 victory over Texas State in 2003. The school’s big-gest loss is a 94-17 defeat at Fresno State in 1991.

NUMBERs FRoM 2000-09 ARE UNPARALLELED iN LoBo hisToRY The numbers attained by the Lobos last decade are unprecedented. UNM was 69-38 from 2002-07 with five bowl appearances. New Mexico appeared in only six bowls in its first 103 years of competition, but has been to five in the past 10 years. The following figures go back to 1965, when the NCAA increased scholarship limits and two-platoon football began nationally:

UNM vs. the Nationally RankedThe Lobos have a 7-50 record against nationally-ranked teams. The breakdown is 5-23 at home, 4-22 in University Stadium, 2-26 on the road, and 0-1 at neutral sites. UNM’s last win against a nationally-ranked opponent came on Oct. 25, 2003 when the Lobos defeated No. 23 Utah 47-35 in Salt Lake City. The last home defeat of a nationally-ranked squad was also Utah, when the Utes were No. 8. That win was a 23-21 nail-biter on November 5, 1994.The Lobos lost 45-0 to No. 17/15 Texas on Sept. 8.

offensive notesB.R. LEADERFifth-year senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook has endured a trying career at UNM. In 2009, he contracted mononucleosis after winning the backup quarterback job. In 2010, Holbrook won the starting job, only to undergo knee surgery to fix an injury he originally suffered in high school. Then, he missed about 10 days of fall camp in 2012 with chest inflammation. But Holbrook still made his 2012 debut as the starter against Southern. In Week Two, he suffered an injury to his ribs when he suffered a helmet-to-helmet collision with a Texas defender, in which the defender also hit Holbrook’s ribs with his knee.Holbrook surpassed the 2,000-yard passing mark for his career with his 162-yard effort against Wyoming on Nov. 19, 2011. He now has 2,368 passing for his UNM career.Holbrook has a 2-12 record as a starter, but he is 2-3 in his last four games.

cole is a diamond in the roughTrue freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche is UNM’s leading rusher after its first two games. The 6-foot-4, 227-pound Gautsche is averaging 61.5 rushing yards per game to rank 10th in the Mountain West, just nine months after he led Cleveland High School to the New Mexico 5A High School championship. Gautsche also has two rushing TDs.

A century of waiting is overJunior running back Demarcus Rogers became the first Lobo in three years to rush for 100 yards, gaining 103 yards against Southern in the season opener. UNM’s last 100-yard rusher was Demond Dennis (133 yards) against Colorado State on Nov. 21, 2009.

it Really is The New Mexico LobosThe Lobos’ 2012 roster lists 32 student-athletes from the state of New Mexico. Seventeen of the 32 are from Albuquerque, giving the Lobos a distinctly local flavor. Several of the New Mexico natives in recent years have made a huge mark on the Lobo program and professionally:

C Erik Cook (7th round, Washington) was selected in the 2010 draft and marked the ninth time a Lobo has been drafted since 2005...UNM has had 13 players taken since 1998...New Mexico had at least one player drafted from 2005-2010 - the program’s longest streak in the modern NFL Draft era.

The University of New Mexico currently has seven former Lobos in the National Football League. That number includes Detroit free agent linebacker Carmen Messina, a 2011 UNM grad, who’s on the practice roster. Offensive lineman Byron Bell was the surprise of 2011. The free agent won a starting job at right tackle for the Carolina Panthers.Safety Glover Quin is in his fourth season with the Houston Texans, and both linebacker Quincy Black and offensive lineman Robert Turner are in their sixth years — Black with the Buccaneers and Turner with the Rams. Offensive lineman Ryan Cook now resides in Dallas after five years in Minnesota and one in Miami. The hallmark of the current Lobos in the NFL remains middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, who is in his 13th year with the Chicago Bears.

More on the running backsJunior Kasey Carrier saw his first action since the 2010 season finale when he played at Texas on Sept. 8. Carrier led the team in rushing yards with 51 and receptions with two (for 6 yards).Redshirt freshman Jhurell Pressley made his first career start at running back in the season opener against Southern. Press-ley also scored the first touchdown of the season on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. Pressley finished with 75 yards and the score on 10 carries. He added 11 yards on seven carries in his second start against Texas.Freshman David Anaya, a walk-on from Roswell, N.M., also made his debut vs. Southern, collecting 65 yards on seven car-ries for a 9.3-yard average. He did not carry the ball vs. Texas.

A flash off the old blockSenior wide receiver Lamaar “Flash” Thomas has made his presence known as a blocker this season. He had four key blocks on two plays in the opener agianst Southern.Thomas made a seal block on third down during UNM’s first series of the game helped spring running back Jhurell Pressley for a 23-yard gain.More impressive was Thomas’ three blocks on the same play — allowing Chase Clayton to run back a kickoff 98 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.Thomas has six touches this season. He’s averaging 12.7 yards on three kickoff returns. He has two carries for 31 yards and one reception for 10 yards..

ty GameLobo wide receiver Ty Kirk surpassed Dwight Counter (2000-03) for ninth place on UNM’s career receptions list with two recep-tions at Texas. Kirk currently has 124 receptions. He scored on a 16-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter against Southern. He’s also 15th on the receiving yards list with 1,312.

hiTMEN: The Next Generation?Former Lobo All-Mountain West first-team offensive lineman Jason Lenzmeier returns for his second stint as offensive line coach at his alma mater. As a player, Lenzmeier remains the only offensive lineman in the history of the Mountain West to earn a Player of the Week honor vs. nationally ranked Utah in 2003 as the Lobos rushed for 407 yards in a 47-35 victory in Salt Lake City. When Lenzmeier played, the offensive line developed the moniker, “the Hitmen.” The Lobos had a 1,000-yard rusher for seven straight years between 2002-08.With Lenzmeier in his first year as line coach in 2007, the Lobos averaged 137.5 rushing yards per game. UNM improved to 208.3 rushing yards per game in 2008 during his second year. New Mexico has not averaged more than 113.2 yards rushing per game in the three years following Lenzmeier’s departure. The current edition of the offensive line has helped UNM to an average of 276.5 yards per game, which is ranked 13th nation-ally. The team debuted with a 347-yard rushing effort against Southern. The rushing yardage was the most since a 419-yard day against San Diego State in 2008.

Defensive NotesrETURN oF ThE TAKEAWAYThe New Mexico defense has a long way to go before it can compare to Texas A&M’s “Wrecking Crew” defense that Coach Bob Davie made famous as defensive coordinator from 1989-93. However ...UNM forced four turnovers in the opener, scoring on two of those four. The Lobos forced 13 turnovers in all of 2011. They had two interceptions against the Jaguars; that’s one fewer than the defense had in all of ’11 — three interceptions.Despite no forced turnovers against Texas, the Lobos still rank tied for 32nd nation-ally with a plus-2 margin.

Not Your average JosephSenior Joseph Harris had an auspicious start to his 2012 season, scoring his first touchdown since high school on a 15-yard fumble return in the second quarter of the season opener against Southern. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss to lead the defense. He added a pass breakup and a tackle in the road opener at Texas.Harris began his Lobo career as a safety in 2008 before a torn anterior cruciate liga-ment ended his season in fall camp. He moved to linebacker in 2010, but his breakout season came last season as a defensive end when he finished fourth on the team in tackles with 55 and ranked tied for 19th in the nation with four forced fumbles.Harris moved back to outside linebacker in 2012 and could be the team’s best pass-rusher. His speed around the end gives opposing offensive linemen fits, and he has put on 10 pounds in the offseason to help him overpower opposing tight ends who try to nullify that speed.

LiNEBAcKER U.The Lobos are getting strong play from their other LB positions in the 3-4.Junior Dallas Bollema showed up for Texas ready for physical play. He had several solid hits among his seven tackles against the nationally ranked Longhorns. The Artesia High School product and former teammate of current Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones is second on the team in tackles with 10.Linebacker Joe Stoner was UNM’s resident playmaker when he started in 2010, forcing four fumbles, recovering three and intercepting one pass. After coming off the bench in 2011, Stoner was back in the starting lineup in 2012 opener against Southern and back to making plays. He intercepted a pass and re-turned it 17 yards in the second quarter that led to a UNM touchdown. Stoner is tied for sixth on the team with six tackles.Junior college transfer Rashad Rainey had a career-high seven tackles, his first career sack, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry against Texas.

2012 Lobo FootbaLL Media ReLeaseSophomore Javarie Johnson had two QB hurries, one tackle and one pass breakup against the Longhorns.

Ray of lightThe leading tackler after the first two games of the season? Senior and former walk-on Matt Raymer may be the big-gest surpise so far on defense. He has 12 tackles, including two for losses and his first career sack for 11 yards on Texas QB David Ash. The Man-zano High School product also forced a fumble on that play.

keeping up with the jonesTrue freshman cornerback Cranston Jones had a memorable collegiate debut. He scored the Lobos’ second defensive touchdown on a 39-yard interception return in the third quarter against Southern.A top-100 recruit out Texas (West Mesquite HS), Jones is coming off a two-inter-ception senior season.

special teams noteschase for the goal lineOne touch, one national award for Chase Clayton. The sophomore kick returner recorded his first run-back in the season opener against Southern midway through the second quarter.Clayton returned the kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, becoming the first Lobo in nine games to score on a kickoff return (Deon Long returned a 98-yarder vs. Sam Houston State in 2011).Clayton was one of six players nationally to earn the College Football Performance Awards National Kick Returner of the Week.He did not have a return against Texas.

Justus is served; Rivara is touchedJunior Justus Adams scored 12 points in his debut as Lobo placekicker. He hit all nine of his extra-point attempts, as well as a 38-yard field goal just before halftime.Adams was the team’s kickoff specialist in 2011. That duty in 2012 has gone to se-nior Greg Rivara, who has kicked off 11 times this season. Seven of those kickoffs have been touchbacks.

skaer tactics, 2012 version?Junior Ben Skaer was one of the busiest punters in the nation in 2010-11. Skaer attempted 158 punts during that span.Skaer was a lot busier as the team’s holder during the season opener against South-ern. He saw the field 10 times (nine extra points, one field goal) on special teams.None of those appearances came as a punter. The Lobos went the entire game without a punt for the first time since the 2008 season finale at Colorado State.Skarer punted five times against Texas for a 39.2-yard average but suffered his fifth career blocked punt, which took place in the first quarter.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Demarcus Rogers rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown and freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche scored two rushing touchdowns to lead New Mexico to a 66-21 win Saturday over Southern in the season opener for both teams. Gautsche had 88 yards on eight carries, including a 47-yard touchdown run on an option keeper. The Lobos scored 38 points in the second quarter, as many as they totaled in the final six games last season. The 38 points also set a school record since UNM started keeping that statistic in 1946. The win also was UNM’s first in a season opener since 2005. The 45-point margin of victory was the school’s largest since a 70-7 triumph over San Diego State on Oct. 18, 2008. Southern turned the ball over four times and the Lobos turned each one into a touchdown, including three in the second quarter. Joseph Harris returned a recovered fumble 10 yards for a Lobos touchdown, while Cranston Jones brought an interception back 39 yards for a score. Sept. 8, 2012 - Austin, Texas - 100,990

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — New Mexico was moving the ball on No. 17 Texas, keeping the Longhorns off balance behind the running and throwing of quarterback B.R. Holbrook. Most importantly, the Lobos were doing a good job keeping the Texas offense off the field. But one jarring hit in the second quarter knocked Holbrook off the field, taking away any chance the Lobos had of staying close in a game that slowly turned into a 45-0 rout. Texas quarterback David Ash scored on a 49-yard touchdown run and had receivers turn short throws into two more scores. The Longhorns (2-0) led 17-0 at halftime and blew the game open with four touchdowns in the second half. New Mexico (1-1) held the ball for nearly 20 minutes in the first half, but the offense stalled when Holbrook took a hard hit from Texas defensive back Quandre Diggs that included helmet-to-helmet contact. Lobos first-year coach Bob Davie screamed for a penalty but didn’t get one. Holbrook was helped off the field and escorted to the locker room, leaving the New Mexico offense in the hands of freshman Cole Gautsche. Gautsche threw an interception to Diggs on his first pass attempt. “Offensively, when B.R. was in the game, there’s no question we had some things we could do. We moved the ball well in the first half,” Davie said. “He took a shot. I thought it was a 15-yard penalty.” Davie said Holbrook actually suffered a rib injury but initial X-rays were negative.
