DONALD  “DUCK”  DUNN                                                      "I  would  have  liked  to  have  been  on  the  road  more  but  the  record  company  wanted  us  in  the  studio.  Man,  we  were  recording  almost  a  hit  a  day  for  a  while  there.  But  I  never  knew  how  popular  that  music  was  until  I  came  to  England  with  Otis  Redding  in  1967."  He  adds  with  a  chuckle:  "I  think  most  of  the  English  people  thought  I  was  a  pick-­up  bass  player.  Without  being  racist  they  probably  thought  that  being  affiliated  with  that  music,  Donald  'Duck'  Dunn  was  black!"  

   

 Biografia  Cresciuto a Memphis, fa presto conoscenza con il coetaneo Steve Cropper con cui condividerà fin dall'adolescenza la passione e la carriera musicale. Infatti mentre frequentavano la Messick High School erano già membri del gruppo The Mar-keys, con i quali

hanno registrato nel 1961 il loro primo singolo "Last Night". Ha collaborato anche al disco blues "Fathers & Sons" di Muddy Wa-ters, con una super-band riunita per l'occasione (Donald "Duck" Dunn al basso, Muddy Waters chitarra e voce, Otis Spann al piano, Paul Butterfield all'armonica,Mike Bloomfield alla chi-tarra, Sam Lay alla batteria). È stato uno dei primi musicisti di ri-ferimento di Jaco Pastorius. È morto la notte del 13 maggio 2012 nel sonno, dopo aver appena terminato un doppio show in Giappone nel pieno del suo tour con l'eterno amico Steve Cropper

EQUIPAGGIAMENTO

Per quanto riguarda il basso Duck Dunn ha usato da sempre fender precision (con corde “La bella Jamerson set”),in particolare:Fender Precision del 1958 con tastiera in acero; ha avuto anche un RE 57 con il manico di un P del '71 e un P del '67 con il manico di un Jazz Bass; era endorser lakland con 2 modelli signature.

ANALISI DELLO STILE Duck Dunn impiega di base lo stile a 2 o 3 dita rimanendo generalmente col pollice sul pick-up.Spesso utilizza l’unghia per simulare il suono del plettro come in “You don’t know like i know” e “Kansas city” con Albert King. Nelle sue linee è presente un grande uso della scala pentatonica maggiore;in particolar modo in “She caught the katy” nella versione dei Blues Brothers :

Sul piano ritmico Duck fa grande uso di crome e semicrome dando ai brani un andamento incalzante,come nel brano “Who’s making love”

Altra caratteristica fondamentale delle sue linee è l’uso dei cromatismi che sarà fonte d’ispirazione per bassisti successivi,come Jaco Pastorius. Di seguito viene riportato il ritornello di “piece of my heart” di Delaney & Bonnie:

A Donald Duck Dunn va il merito di aver cambiato la musica R&B,pop,soul(per la casa discografica STAX)grazie alla sua grande abilità nel creare riff .Uno dei più famosi ed importanti è “Green Onions” dall’omonimo album registrato con Booker T. & the M.G.’s nel 1962.
