Unique Features of Slim Line Plain Terrazzo Tiles

Terra-Stone is a technically advanced and chemically modified conglomerate tile, available in a slim line nominal 300x300x13mm full bodied Terrazzo and nominal 600x600 and 800x800 x 20mm format. The tile is manufactured in a wide selection of standard colours. Architects and designers can, however, request custom mix designs and border mosaic accessories at a small premium, depending on the quantity required.

“With up to 60% recycled content!” We have a comprehensive specialized range incorporating sea shells, recycled glass or mirror for a unique sparkling visual look. The “Eco” range also incorporates waste by-products such as pozzolanic cement extenders. Up to 60% of the product can be comprised of recycled materials, contributing to a “greener, environmentally friendly” product, which is unique in the tile industry!

Our factory has a strict policy of recycling all its water used in production to ensure minimum impact on the environment - ±60 000 litres/day! As the company sources ± 90% of all its raw materials locally, the company has an extremely low carbon footprint for the products manufactured. This is especially true when compared to other glazed ceramic and porcelain tile factories, which consume large volumes of gas or coal daily to fire up their kilns, further increasing their carbon footprint. Imported tiles from other factories have a much higher carbon footprint due to their use of fossil fuels needed to transport the finished products to their final destination of use in Southern Africa. Finally, all our office waste paper and plastic waste packaging is also recycled, in terms of management’s “Green” policy.

Due to the unique weight and thickness of the tile, especially in the 300 x 300mm format, it is ideal for wall coverings. Terra-Stone’s hardwearing features make the tile suitable for areas with high foot traffic, such as airports, shopping centres, schools, universities, train stations, commercial offices and domestic applications, especially in all sizes, but especially in the 600x600 and 800x800x20mm format.

The Terra-Stone range offers an extremely hard wearing attractive surface and the “Polished range” is in fact further polished by frequent foot traffic. The “Polished” and “Lava Stone” ranges can, however, be rejuvenated 25-30 years later, as or when needed, by re-grinding, revealing a brand new surface, ensuring more than a lifetime of service!

Due to its thin, chemically modified properties, it is 50% lighter in weight than its traditional Terrazzo counterpart and, therefore, causes less stress loading on high rise or canter levered building structures. This also allows these tiles to be suitable for wall applications, being 50% lighter than conventional Terrazzo. It is far more economical to transport with a +25kg/m2 weight in 300x300x13mm thickness format and ± 46kg/m² in a 600x600 and 800x800x20mm format.

The Classic Polished range is factory sealed and is to be bonded with the more affordable ceramic tile adhesive. A unique feature about the Classic Polished tile is that joints and tiles can be smooth ground at an additional cost after laying to achieve a “Grooveless Floor” finish, allowing supermarket trolleys or suitcases with wheels, ease of movement across the floor, ensuring an ideal floor for shopping centres, airports and train stations. A matching UFT Tile grout with bonding liquid should be used. Contact us for more technical information in this regard.

Two coats of UFT Concrete and Stone Sealer is recommended after installation. In high traffic areas such as a shopping malls and airports etc, a top coat of SQT Dresser, a sacrificial and buffable sealer, is to be applied, for optimum shine and ease of maintenance.

Terrazzo tiles are hard-wearing, easy to maintain with a 50 year plus lifespan... hence the master architect’s decision to use Union Terrazzo tiles for all 10 Gautrain Stations! Our Terrazzo tiles were used for all their floor tile requirements, including all stair treads and platform nosing and reeded tactile and pastille tiles for the visually impaired. The entire project was overseen by rail network specialist and master architect Tom Steer.

Lava Stone is a unique, finely textured, non-slip surface where the slightly protruding aggregates are diamond polished to ensure the surface, although non-slip, is smooth to the touch and easy to maintain. The Eco Terra-Stone green recycled Glass range is available in a Classic Polished or Lava Stone finish, creating a unique translucent 3D appearance, ideal for floors or walls! Lay tiles on a clean stable concrete or masonry substrate, using a non-marking rubber mallet to ensure tiles are laid evenly with the least lippage possible, using a quality guaranteed ceramic tile adhesive, (porcelain tile adhesives are not to be used). New concrete slabs or screeds to which Terra-Stone tiles are to be laid must be adequately cured to prevent the transfer of any substrate shrinkage cracks to the tiles. The concrete slab must be at least 6 weeks old and any screeds must be at least 4 weeks old before being tiled. Use standard/conventional slow setting ceramic tile adhesives to fix these tiles, not procelain adhesives. On suspended concrete slabs and externally in outdoor areas use a ceramic tile adhesive and bonding liquid to replace all the mixing water. Ensure each tile is fully bedded and supported throughout, with tile adhesive after bedding the tile, with at least 95% coverage of tile adhesive. Lay tiles with a 3-5mm joint in the 300mm format and use a 5-8mm joint for the 600 and 800mm format. Tiles to be laid in a grid format. Grouting provides support to the tiles after laying and this should take place between 24 and 48 hours after laying. For walls composed of wood or dry walling, a suitable paste tile adhesive must be used. In outdoor areas, ensure the substrate and tiles are laid to a fall, to allow adequate drainage and prevent pooling of rain water, which could cause problems later.

In a construction environment, cover the newly laid tiles with plastic or non-marking boarding until final handover, to avoid damage and soiling by following trades. Ensure red clay soil is not left on the tiles during construction as the fine clay particles may permeate the surface and stain the tiles. CAUTION: Acid based cleaners, thinners, strong ammonia cleaning chemicals and acetone should never be used on the tiles. Acidic cleaning chemicals will corrode the surface of the tiles, while ammonia and acetone will damage the protective sealant! Paint spillages should be avoided by covering the tiles with drop-sheets. Wood sawdust left on the tiles, must also be avoided, as it may stain the tiles when damp, over a prolonged period.

(a) LAVA STONE, CARPET STONE AND RUSTICO TEXTURED: Once laid and grouted, an additional coat of “SQT Union Sealer” for the Rustico, Lava Stone and Carpet Stone ranges” is to be applied. Ensure surface is clean and dry before sealing.

(b) CLASSIC POLISHED AND MEDITERRANEAN HANDCRAFTED TERRAZZO RANGE: Two thin even coats of “UFT Concrete & Stone Sealer” is to be applied on the “Classic Polished” and “Mediterranean Handcrafted” patterned ranges with a clean lamb’s wool roller to ensure ease of maintenance, for both the tile and grouted areas after installation. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. Tile surface is to be clean and dry prior to sealing. Thereafter, for high traffic areas, such as restaurants and shops etc... apply one thin coat of SQT Dresser, (a water based buffable and sacrificial surface sealer) on a clean dry tile surface and ensure to use a clean lamb’s wool roller as an applicator.

On the Classic Polished, Mediterranean and Rustico ranges: For high traffic areas such as restaurants and shopping malls, applying SQT Dresser as a spray buff application on top of the Sealer, after the floor has been cleaned by the floor maintenance staff, where there are signs of wear of the existing sealer, will provide a buffable, protective coating, further enhancing the gloss finish and prolonging the life of the sealants beneath, and improving the stain resistance of the tile. The SQT Dresser can also be easily stripped away by applying SQT Stripper during the cleaning process, should the dresser coating tarnish over time (+ 2 years). Areas should be re-sealed from time to time, depending on exposure to direct sunlight, and the extent of foot traffic in the area. Only neutral soap detergents should be used to clean and maintain the Terra-Stone tiles on a regular basis. SQT Natural Stone Detergent is the recommended cleaning and very effective degreasing neutral soap for these tiles. Best cleaning results are in combination with a solution of SQT Natural Stone Detergent in warm water and a red 3M pad attached to a mechanical scrubber, and then the dirty cleaning water is to be removed with a wet and dry vacuum. All cleaning machinery, sealers and soaps are available from Union Tiles.

Ensure after completing the tiling or grouting procedure, the tiles are left clean each day, wiping them clean with a damp sponge as the tiling progresses every 1-2m2. No tile adhesive or grout is to remain on the face of the tiles for more than half an hour prior to cleaning.

Prior to grouting ensure the tile joints are clean and have been dampened ± two hours prior to grouting. Mix UFT Quarry Grout in a matching colour to a semi dry mix and use a trowel to work the grouting between the joints. (the “semi dry” grout mix prevents the grout from adhering to the aggregates). Compress the grout into the joint using a moist round pointing or jointing trowel, leaving a smooth compressed joint finish. Ensure any excess grout is brushed clean, carefully removing any grout between the aggregates in the tile, soon after grouting, taking care not to leave any grout on the tile surface. Thoroughly wet the grout, the day after

installation, for best curing.

Allow movement joints against the perimeter walls of the area being tiled and on floors every 4,5LM or where there are existing construction or expansion joints in the substrate. On suspended floor slabs, expansion joints must be provided every 3LM. Flexible joint fillers must have no oil content, as the oil is absorbed into the tile, leaving unsightly dark edges. An acrylic silicone is recommended with no oil content. Where tiles are laid in a staggered bond system, this system should only be used internally, due to thermal stresses in the external environment and be sure to provide expansion joints in both directions.

CautionAcid based cleaners, thinners, strong ammonia cleaning chemicals and acetone should never be used on the tiles. Acidic cleaning chemicals will corrode the surface of the tiles, while ammonia and acetone will damage the protective sealant! Ensure red clay soil is not left on the tiles during construction, as the fine clay particles may permeate the surface and stain the tiles. Paint spillages should be avoided by covering the tiles with drop-sheets. Do not mix tile batches in one area, always keep different batches in separate areas.
