La Terra Earth Sciences (Pty) Ltd (La Terra), which means The Earth in Italian was founded in 2005. It is a South African, 100% black woman owned consulting firm and an Exempted Micro-Enterprise, Level 3 Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) contributor.

With over 40 years combined experience, La Terra has grown in capability, reach and experience under the leadership of the Managing Director, Zanele Phoku1. We have evolved into an integrated and a multi-disciplinary Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) management consulting company with expertise in South African and International compliance and funding requirements (including the World Bank Group Guidelines, the Equator Principles, the International Finance Corporation performance standards and environmental liabilities disclosure according to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002). La Terras mission is to continually ensure sustainability across all sectors, where SHE expertise, services, solutions and best practice will enhance socio-economic development and minimise environmental degradation.

1 Zanele Phoku is the founder and managing director of La Terra. A qualified Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) with more than 15 years experience in Environmental Management; Phoku is a member and the current chairperson of the International Association for Impact Assessments (IAIAsa). She is also a chairperson for the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) EIA EAP Forum.

Since qualifying as an EAP, Phoku has worked on high profile projects in South Africa, both as a consultant and government official. Phoku holds a National Diploma and a B. Tech degree in Environmental Management from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). She is a registered Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
