TERM ONE WEEK FIVE

from the principal Last week we began to unpack our focus as a college for 2020 which is Feedback:
Creating and maintaining positive relationships. This week I would like to share some
thoughts about the ‘creating’ positive relationships as I have observed this week here
at the College.
Developing positive relationships takes time and effort as well as considerable skill. For
some it comes as second nature but for others it is harder to learn. That’s why it’s so
important for all the adults and senior students in their lives to model this every day and in every way. For
example, saying ‘Hello’ and asking someone their name isn’t very hard but it goes a long way to
creating a new relationship. I love trying to use other languages to say ‘hello’. I do struggle with some of
the African and South East Asian languages at our school but it’s fun to try (coached by the Year 2
student). I wonder if you know how to say ‘hello’ in the indigenous language of this area – Wulgurukaba
or even in the language of the Bindol people. If we don’t, then perhaps the road to positive relationships
in our wider community may begin by simply learning a new greeting.
Our Blessed Staff:
Each week our staff give so much to the College. Last week there were a few key events that show the
depth of their commitment to our 2020 focus and to the purpose of Christian education. Mrs Stacey
Robertson shared her testimony about her life and how she became a Christian. Everyone was moved
by her story and many had a tear or two. Christians often get criticised for thinking themselves ‘perfect’
or not as down to earth as others. This was not the case for Mrs Robbo. The Secondary college sat silently
and engrossed by what she had to say because she was so authentic, genuine and real. Accepting
Jesus is a powerful experience and one that begins a perfect relationship between our creator and
ourselves. Thanks to all our staff who contribute to ‘Teacher Testimonies’ and for the way they show the
reality of our lives before and after we know Jesus.
The teacher ‘Meet and Greet’ on Wednesday night was well attended and its informality ensured that
teachers and parents could have deeper and more meaningful conversation. The night allowed us to
get to know the face of that person who may have recently emailed you. Thanks to all who came and
for our staff who made this happen. I encourage you all to attend these nights. On Monday, the Arts
community have organised another important get together and one which will further develop
performance skills of our students as well as ensuring that we get to know them as people in a different
context. I encourage you to come along to this free event. For those who would like there are a few
tickets remaining for the meal prepared by our hospitality students. The event is also a real life
opportunity to assess students in their studies. Brilliant!
Thanks to all involved in today’s swimming carnival. The skies cleared and we enjoyed a very warm day
which enabled us to see our students in a different way. I know that our teachers would have got to see
our students perform in different ways and had the opportunity to just get to know them through
conversations at the carnival.
At our staff meeting yesterday we also discussed the importance of creating relationships through
behaviour management. While detentions and suspensions appear to be the best and quickest forms of
consequences for an unwanted behaviour, Mr Lane explained to us all that there are many ways the
other tools available to us such as the reflection sheets can be used to generate conversations to create
positive relationships. It’s not always the easiest thing to do, but we are encouraging and working hard
with all our staff to improve in this area of our work. If we can develop quality Christian education with
positive relationships, behavioural issues should reduce significantly so that we learn more and manage
less.
The Bible says that creating relationships is quintessential for all Christians. In 1 Peter 5:14 it says, “Greet
one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.” This sentiment is found in many
places within scripture. The warmth and genuine love for another person is the start of something far
greater than being a kind person. It is what God has called us all to be – in relationship with each other
and in relationship with Him. Finally, we read and sometimes hear the word ‘shalom’ around our college
or at church. It’s a Hebrew word which means peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, welfare and
tranquillity and can be used to say both ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ reminding us all how our Heavenly Father
shows us how we should all build positive relationships whenever we begin and leave a conversation.
Shalom,
Andrew Jones

Do you believe in the power of prayer? We have a prayer
group, Wednesday mornings in the OSHC room H Block -
8.35am to 9.30am. Come along! Parents with pre-
schoolers are welcome too.
From the Head of Secondary On Wednesday night I appreciated meeting a number of parents who
attended the meet n greet. I have found that putting faces to names and
conversations in the informal atmosphere of a meet and greet really enhances
the partnership between parents and teachers.
Interhouse Swimming Carnival
Our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival is being held next Thursday 5th March at the Long
Tan Pool. Students will be bussed over from the College and buses will also be available to
transport students back to the College by 3.00pm. If you are planning to drop your student
directly at the pool in the morning, please communicate this with the Secondary Office in
advance. Similarly, at the conclusion of the carnival, if you wish to pick your child up from the
venue, please ensure that your sign them out first. Students will not be permitted to leave the
venue (except on the buses provided) without written permission signed by a parent/
guardian. The swimming carnival is still a designated school day, so even if your child is not a
competitive swimmer, please ensure that your child does not miss out on the great House spirit
and fun of the day. There are novelty swimming events that all can participate in as well as
cheering on and encouraging team mates. Parents are also welcome to attend to cheer on
our students and enjoy the good-natured competition of the day.
Senior Arts Performance Evening
I’m looking forward attending the Senior Arts Performance next Monday night in Pioneer
Hall. Much if the artwork and performance items are for formal assessment and are of
exceptional quality. It’s not just an Arts event though, with our senior Hospitality students
putting on a sumptuous two-course meal for those who have booked in advance. However,
the performance evening is a free event and all are welcome to attend to support our
students to perform in front of an appreciative audience. Tickets are only required for the
dinner component.
Photo Day
Next Tuesday is photo day for Secondary students. Please ensure that your child is neatly
groomed and turned out in full formal uniform for the day. It’s great to see a number of girls
who have taken up the option of wearing culottes with formal uniform but parents and
students are reminded that formal skirts are to be worn for school photographs.

From the Head of Primary Our Parent-Teacher Communication afternoons this term are next Week on
Wednesday 4th March and then the following week, on Wednesday 11th Mar,
and Thursday 12th March. These appointments will be 15 minutes in duration,
running from 3.15pm – 5.30pm. An email went home last Friday from our IT
manager Mr Potter, explaining how to book an appointment online to see your
child’s teacher. If you unable to make it on the day you booked, please contact the school
to let your child’s teacher know so that they can be aware of that and either book another
parent in or alternatively, commence the next appointment early as we can often run
behind time if parents are late or do not turn up. If you find that there are still things to discuss
after your 15 minute interview time slot has ended, please make a time to continue your
discussions at a later date, rather than taking up time from the next person’s interview.
The College photos will be next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. The class photos will be
taken in Pioneer Hall, with individual portraits being taken on the stage area the same as last
year. Your child will need to wear their formal uniform for photos. Extra order forms are
available at the main office including the sibling order forms. The timetables for the photos
are on page 5.
Round One of the North Queensland Inter-School Chess competition will be held at Ignatius
Park College next Wednesday and we will have 40 students participating – 20 from both
Primary and Secondary. Students will play a total of 7 games over the day with winning
teams from this round going into the Premier Division for Round Two in May. Round Three will
held in August with the winning teams in Primary and Secondary qualifying for the state
championships in Brisbane in October. Last year we had a Primary team selected to
represent North Queensland and an all girls team at the state girls’ championship as well.
Pokemon cards are starting to find their way back to school again this year and have
already started causing conflict amongst students. It’s this reason why schools, including
ACC, ban items like these due to the many negative outcomes that result amongst the
students and the unnecessary time spent resolving student conflict and lost or stolen cards.
Please support the teachers’ direction to their students in leaving those items at home.

Name: Fiona Mackereth
Role: Secondary Business Teacher; Year 12 Coordinator
When did you start at the College?: 2016
What do you think makes ACC a great place to work?: I love the chance to truly develop
meaningful connections with my students. I also enjoy the freedom of being able to point
my teaching to God and what the Word says about all kinds of things.
What is God doing in your life right now?: God is so kind. He is reminding me the importance
of rest. Life can get very full and I struggle with priorities at times. He helps me with that
perspective (when I remember to priorities HIM lol!! )
Where were you born?: Lower Hutt – New Zealand. I grew up in a small village called
Wainuiomata.
What would we find you doing on the weekend to relax?: Swimming, socialising with friends,
water skiing with our family or ‘binge watching’ on Netflix or Stan!
What is your secret talent/skill/ability that not too many people know about?: I can tap
dance – badly but I can.
What is your ‘Deep Hope’/ goals /dreams for 2020?: My deep hope is my students know
they’re loved by Jesus, and life is always better if you have Him in it. I would hate to see any
of them leave our college without this – life is tough, and it throws so many challenges our
way. It’s always better knowing that we have hope in the middle of storms, and someone
who always has our back. He never lets us down, even if it seems He has, we eventually
realise he hasn’t.
PHOTO DAY : A reminder that full formal uniform must be
worn for College photos.
