Religious and Pastoral Theme: Called to be a Saint/ Being a good example for others

The Prayer of St Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console,

To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Head’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians, There was something about the return to school after the half term that felt special. Speaking after our All Saints Day Mass with Father Peter on Tuesday, he commented that everyone seemed to be ‘in good heart'. A quick glance at the commendations awarded this week is evidence that the children have certainly returned with a spring in their step.

As a consequence of our study of Saints this week, may I leave you with a favourite prayer. It is the Prayer of St

Francis of Assisi and contains some powerful words to help keep us steady through the week ahead. I recommend that you pause after each line to enable the power of the prayer to be more fully realised. With best wishes for the weekend ahead, Mr S Cartwright, Head of St Edmund's Prep

St Edmund’s Day Celebrations

All parents should receive by Parent Mail today a letter about the celebrations for St Edmund’s Day on Wednesday 16th November, including an invitation to join us for Mass at 2:30-3:30pm in the College Chapel, followed by refreshments. This will be a non-uniform day and children are invited to dress in clothes of their own choosing. As we are planning activi-ties for the day related to our aim of achieving the Eco-Schools Silver Award, this may provide some children with inspiration for their clothing. Please note that clothes should be suitable for wearing to Mass in Chapel, as well as sufficiently ro-bust for playtimes and indoor games activities, and that hair of shoulder length or longer should be tied back. Jewel-lery (other than the regulation gold stud earrings) should not be worn.

All the children will be attending creative workshops on the themes of up-cycling/recycling or living things. A request for parents of children in Forms 3 and 4 For their up-cycling workshops, children in these year groups are asked if they could bring into school on the day a rinsed out one-litre juice carton (any shape), preferably with the top of the carton taken off neatly. If this is possible, it would be very helpful, thank you.

Please note that there will be no instrumental and singing lessons on Wednesday 16th November.

Form 6 eSafety talk

As part of their eSafety topic in Computing lessons this half term, Form 6 attended a talk this week by PC Miller and PCSO Clark of Hertfordshire Police about mobile phones and social media. Among the several crucial messages of the talk were: to follow the terms of use regarding age restrictions on social media sites; to behave responsibly online, making sure that you do not send anything you would not want your parents, teachers or friends to see; not to communicate with strangers online; and finally to be aware of the possible consequences for future education and employment prospects of behaving irresponsibly online. Afterwards, Form 6 were invited to ask questions.

FRIENDS OF ST EDMUND’S

We hope you all had a lovely half term break, and wel-come back! Saturday 5th November is our fabulous Fireworks Night. We hope that you have all received your wrist bands, which were sent out by post. Those wishing to attend without wrist-bands can still come along; however you will need

to pay on the door at a cost of £10.00 per head. The Christmas Bazaar will be a fun couple of hours for the children to enjoy all the stalls and, of course, visit Santa! Please start saving your jars to fill with lovely child-friendly items to do-nate for the Jar Tombola Stall. A house point is

awarded for every jar sent in, so please ensure your child/children informs their Tutor of their donation. Date for Diary

Monday 12th December at 3.30pm Christmas Bazaar Best wishes from Jan, Debbie, Helen, Jayne, Penny and Siobhan

Form 6

Form 6 enjoyed another thrilling lesson over in our new College Science Labs as Mrs Towns, our wonderful and knowledgeable teacher, led the lesson on Chromatography and distillation. The children learned first-hand how distillation works and were able to watch as the distiller separated ink from water. They then conducted an investigation to further their understanding of chromatography, finding out which colours were present in four different pens. All the children enjoyed the opportunity to work and learn in the College Labs.

Remembrance

At the start of the month of Remembrance, Form 5 have been thinking about their friends, family and brave soldiers who have sadly passed away but are still held close in their thoughts. Their beautiful, touch-ing prayers, written on poppy crosses, are on display outside the School Office.

Shoe Box Appeal

Thank you for your generosity with shoe box donations. The deadline is next Wednesday for those who would like to sub-

mit any last donations. We will certainly be making Christ-mas special for someone in need.
