Our school chaplain Maree Hoyle
retired on the 23rd May. Maree
developed a very supportive and caring role as school
chaplain helping staff, students and families. Maree
implemented a number of pastoral care programs and
events including; Breakfast Club, Multicultural Day,
friendship and resiliency programs. Maree will be
greatly missed and on behalf of the Leeming SHS ESC
school community we wish Maree all the very best in
her retirement as she spends time travelling around
Australia with her family.
Two of our wonderful long term Board members Judy
Hardie and Marianne Underwood will be leaving us at
the end of the year as their children transition from
Leeming SHS ESC. Our School Board is seeking
nominations for 2 parent representative positions. The
role of the Board is to enable parents and members of
the community to engage in activities that are in the
best interest of students and enhance the education
provided by the school. If you are interested in joining
our very collaborative and productive School Board
please complete a Nomination Form attached and
return it to leemingesc.wa.edu.au or hand into the
office by Friday 22/6/2018. An election will be held if
the number of nominations exceeds the 2 positions.
We are planning to transition the new members in
term 3 ready to start in term 4 2018. If you require any
further information about the process or role of a
parent representative on the Board then please contact

Leeming ESC has a new app that can be downloaded from
iTunes or Google Store.
NOTE: Please be aware that at present there are two apps
for Leeming ESC. Please make sure you select the
Skoolbag one NOT Theme Solutions. If you have previously
downloaded the Theme Solutions app we apologise for the
inconvenience but there are more functions available on
Skoolbag. Please download the app and take a moment to
see what is available. There is information about the
school (term dates, school development days, stationery
list), newsletters, uniform shop, canteen menu etc. Check
out the calendar, this will keep you up to date on activities
planned and if the venue is offsite a map will show you the
location.
The school will use the app to send messages to groups of
people e.g. from a particular class, afterschool
bushrangers, school council members or the whole school
community. To set up the group messages you would like
to receive on the bottom right of the home page select
‘More’, then ‘Setup Push Notifications’, then turn on the
notifications you wish to receive. Messages can also be
sent to the whole school. This does not need to be
selected.
eForms is another good function of the App. Change of
Details and Absentee Notifications can be submitted
directly to school via the app and in future permission notes
will also be available. We hope this app will be a
convenient way we can further enhance the communication
process between school and home. Links are below

STUDENT NEWS
MERIT CERTIFICATES CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
The beginning of this term has flown by with lots of
things happening in our school. Camps and excursions
as well as the usual Bush Rangers and sporting activities
our students enjoy.
I have continued working with several small groups
from various year groups.
Some of the topics we have been covering are social
media and its impact on our lives, puberty, friendship
skills, worry and appropriate peer relationships.
The students in these groups are all working hard and
developing some new skills and refining others.
This will be my last Chat as I am retiring. I want to take
this opportunity to thank you all for support over the
last 3 years. It has been an absolute privilege to work
with your amazing children. They are such special and
unique people and I have learned much from them. I
will miss them very much.
Thank you to the wonderful staff for their inclusiveness
and support as well.
I wish you and your students all the best for the future.
Maree Hoyle
Congratulations to Jayelan Lee who was presented
with a bravery award by Lions International at a
ceremony held on 20th May 2018. The award was in
recognition of children with special needs who have
shown courage in the face of adversity and overcome
obstacles or endeavoured to improve the quality of
their own lives.

On Friday week 2 the year 8’s went on our CVA
excursion to Cottesloe beach. We planted 50 plants in
the sand dunes and loved knowing that we were
helping the native wildlife alongside Coast Care.
This term has been very busy so far with our Work Skills
and Independent Living Skills Programs. The students
have been busily developing and creating their very
own Café Superstar! Each week the students create
menus and shopping lists before opening their café on
Friday. As well as developing their literacy and
numeracy skills in real life scenarios, the students have
been learning about appropriate public behaviours and
socialising with their peers.
This week our Business Enterprise has truly taken shape
and we are proud to announce the Grand Opening of
‘The Barkey – Barking Good Biscuits!’ The year 8
students have been researching grain-free dog biscuit
recipes and developing a budget. We have created
advertising will be taking orders in week 6! This is all in
the lead up to the Leeming Pop Up Shops, where we
will be opening our stall to family, friends and other
schools.

Students from ESC 11 and ESC 8 went on camp to Point
Peron in week 3. Students bravely participated in crate
stacking, prusiking and kayaking, while also completing
Bush Ranger conservation activities. Students then had
a visit from an Aboriginal elder named Sheila Humphries
who spoke about her experiences and showed students
how to do Aboriginal dot painting. All students had a
great time on camp and went home exhausted on
Friday afternoon.

The start of term 2 has been a productive time in ESC
12. We have been making birds’ nests for Native Arc as
part of a practical conservation project in Bush Rangers.
To make the nests we took shredded paper and dipped
it in a mix of flour, salt and water and laid it over a bowl
to make the shape. The nests are almost ready for lining
and can then be donated to Native Arc for rescued
birds.
We have also been out to SERCUL in Kenwick to assist
with their conservation projects where we raked grass
from the wetlands and planted reeds and shrubs by Yule
Brook.
The students have been learning about Aboriginal
People and Place for HASS where we are reading about
Aboriginal communities. We have also viewed segments
of the film, “Brave New Clan” which follows young
Aboriginal people and tells the story of their connection
to the land.
Below are some of the student’s thoughts!
Josh – My favourite part was Bush Ranger camp.
Dillon- I’ve been teaching Miss Priestley’s class how to
make birds nests.
Kane – I liked the Bush Ranger camp.
Luka- I liked the hiking on Bush Ranger camp.
Lauren- It’s been fun making the birds nests.
Ellie- I liked going to the caves on Bush Ranger camp.
Tania – I like my iPad.
Liam- I liked going to the dark caves.

Term 2 has already been super exciting, with many
more fun events coming our way. In week 2 we were
fortunate enough to have 6 of the West Coast Eagles
players visit our centre. They taught us footy skills on
the oval and played some games with us, and then we
had a question and answer session where we got to
have a chat and get autographs! Miss Gage is hoping for
a Freo Dockers visit next! We all worked super hard to
make a pink vanilla sugar scrub for our mums on
Mother’s Day, and followed a recipe. Lucky we are used
to doing that in our home economic classes! We also
had our Conservation Volunteer Australia excursion at
South Beach in Fremantle. We have been learning about
the difference between employees and volunteers in
Bush Rangers, and we did such a fantastic job
volunteering our time and efforts as Bush Ranger
cadets, to help maintain the plants at the beach.
We are looking forward to week 5 as we are expecting
an exciting arrival. We are receiving eggs from U Can
Hatch Us!! The eggs will hatch in our classroom, and we
will have cute and fluffy chicks to look after. We are also
looking forward to the year 7 camp coming up in week
8. What a term!

In semester 1 our class was lucky enough to attend 2 Fishability excursions at Woodman Point. In order to do this successfully the students needed to be patient and to learn to stand quietly and still while waiting for the fish to bite. It was an amazing experience for everyone and without a doubt many new skills were learnt. The amount of parent support and the dedication of the Fishability volunteers who were guiding us was outstanding.
Lily: I liked putting bait on the hook and waiting on the jetty for a fish.
Makenzie: On both trips I caught the first fish. I think it was a snapper fish.
Alyssa: Fishing is relaxing and cool. Nobody fell into the water. I caught 2 blowies on the second trip.
Sam: I caught 2 blowies. I was sitting on the jetty with Zach. Zach was really focusing on his fishing. I didn’t learn anything new from him.
Aidan: I was looking at the water to see if I could spot a fish.
Zach: I tried so hard to catch a fish but the blowies were so annoying. It was great fun.
Skye: I liked to sit on the jetty with my fishing rod.
Ella: I loved the water, ocean and fishing rod.
We also attended a Conservation Volunteers Australia
(CVA) in Term 2. This provided another wonderful
opportunity for the students to develop skills, ranging
from social to learning about conservation on this
wonderful planet of ours.

Year 10.2 have had a very busy start to term 2. The first day back we held an ANZAC commemorative service. We were fortunate to have LAC Thomas Lister, Sgt Denham Milo and their military dog Zeran from the Pearce Base RAAF attend and address the school.
Mrs Linda Scott from the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) also attended to accept a $200.00 donation from our school. The students raised money by making and selling commemorative poppy broaches. Our focus with this fundraiser was to inform more people of the purple poppy. The purple poppy is to commemorate the animals that have served and are serving in the armed forces. These are to be worn alongside the red poppy.
During week 3 our class and Mr Walkey’s year 9 class went on camp to Point Peron camp school. The students participated in many fun activities such as kayaking, and crate stacking. Unfortunately after many years Point Peron is being put up for private tender. Point Peron has been a wonderful camp for our students and I will be very sorry this facility may no longer be available.
Taj: We went to Point Peron Camp. We did lots of activities and had lots of food to eat. I liked kayaking and had a go with crate tower. I enjoyed my camp.
Joshua: It was fun making purple poppies out of clay. They were purple to represent animals at war. I learnt a lot about ANZAC day. Patrick: Camp was so much fun. My favourite part of camp was the crate stacking. I was good at it. Jacob: I was very busy colouring in purple poppies for ANZAC Day. I am really good at colouring in. We made a beautiful poster out of the purple poppies. Joseph: I really enjoyed making purple poppies for ANZAC Day. I thought our assembly was very interesting. I loved meeting the dog Zeran. Amasha: We went to Point Peron for camp. I climbed the crate tower, rowed on the kayak and I played basketball with Josh. I ate a lot of yummy food that made me very full. We played football on the foreshore and I had so much fun. David: Camp at Point Peron was amazing. I was really worried about being in the water and did not want to try kayaking. Then I thought I would give it a go and I am so glad I did. It was so much fun. I was in a kayak with Josh and it was my favourite activity.

It has been a massive start to Term 2 with students commencing Community Based Learning in conjunction with all their studies. Travel training and knowing how to stay safe in the community is a core skill for all our students especially as they embark upon a future beyond school.
All students have been working extremely hard in the workplace with a big congratulations going to Paras Batavia and Jordan Ulyatt for gaining a work trial at ACTIV Bentley and to Jacob Whyte for being awarded the Merit Certificate for ESC 1 this term.
With the anticipation of Kalgoorlie Camp fast approaching, I ask that all students continue to work hard and in the

Year 12 students are enjoying working in our new
classroom on the oval. We now have lots more space
and a new reading corner. We have also started our
Senior School STEM program and have been learning
how to CODE. We started by developing our own code
using Lego pieces to represent letters. Then we worked
with a partner to de-code messages. We even tried to
trick Mrs Davies. Students are now busily preparing for
our camp to Kalgoorlie in Week 8. We have been
researching all the amazing things Kalgoorlie has to
offer and can’t wait to go on the train.
We are also super proud of
Caden for bringing home a
bronze medal from the 2018
Special Olympics Australia
National Games held in
Adelaide last month.
Congratulation Caden!

We have had an amazing term so far, our host
employers have had such positive feedback to share
when we visit students in the workplace. A few of the
students would like to share their experiences from
their work placements:
Levi Baker: I work at Meals on Wheels. I love doing the
cutlery on the table. The people come and sit down for
food. I give them some drinks, like a bottle of water or
a jug of juice. My favourite thing I like doing is to help
the customers. My favourite snack I get to eat when
I’m there is hot chips and vegies. I’ve loved it a lot to
help the supervisors.
Angus Reed: I love coming to work at SLF (Spine and
Limb Foundation). I think I’m good at sorting the bags
of clothes and pushing the big cages around. I also like
how there is some old students from Leeming who I
get to sit with at break times.
Anna Johnson: I work at Leeming Childcare. I like
working with the kids and putting them to sleep. I like
supervising them on the playground. They really like
playing with the lego and making slime and playdough
with me.
We congratulate Jordan Ulyatt and Paras Batavia on
receiving work trials with Activ Bentley. All their hard
work has been recognised and we wish them all the
very best during this time.
All of the workplace learning students will be changing
placements for semester two, with guidance from their
My Plans. Please look out for the documentation,
which will be arriving to you via email over the next 2
weeks. Feel free to email them back or even return
them through the school bag app. Of course we are
happy to receive them back in paper format, should
you prefer.

WORKPLACE LEARNING NEWS
Term 2 has started off with a flurry of exciting things happening including some visits from some local AFL and
Perth Wildcats stars, carnivals, commencement of our after school tennis program and a trail of wellbeing4kids
program.
On Monday 7th May, West Coast Eagles players Elliot Yeo, Brad Sheppard, Chris Masten, Jake Waterman, Brendon
Ah Chee, and Ryan Burrows visited the school to conduct some skill sessions with the Year 7’s, 8’s and 9’s. The
students were fortunate enough to get some 1-1 tips to playing AFL Football. The session concluded with the
students being able to ask questions, pose for photos and get autographs.
A group of Year 7’s were chosen to trial a “wellbeing4kids program” which
focuses on a yoga style approach to connecting with the students bodies and
minds through specific movements and breathing. The session was thoroughly
enjoyed and we are may continue these session in term 3.
In preparing for our annual Basketball Carnival we had a visit from Perth
Wildcats player Greg Hire on Friday 25th May. He met with the students in our
basketball teams and took them for some skills and drills. The following
Tuesday 29th May, 2 teams from Leeming ESC participated in the Kalamunda’s
Basketball Carnival held at Ray Owen Stadium. The students played really well and showed amazing
sportsmanship to their team mates and to the other teams. They had lots of fun and won a couple of games each.
Well done to all those involved.
